A big thank you to David Rowsell for this week's run report
I’ve visited a number of different Parkrun courses away from my usual Bushy Park ‘home’ and have to say that
Broadwater ranks among my favourites to date
and continued the recent trend of welcoming over 250 runners and walkers - not often seen
the local volunteer team offered a warm welcome and supported the runners and walkers brilliantly
the Marshall’s all the way around the course keeping us true
to Park Walkers and Tail Walkers encouraging towards the back
and to those waiting for us all at the finish line to count and scan us in… thanks are due to everyone
slightly undulating course was a pleasure to run
circling a beautiful wildfowl-rich lake on tarmac paths
and then following trail paths around an overgrown pitch and putt course (a few of the tee boxes can still be spotted!) I suspect the trails might get muddy at times
with no more hazards than the occasional tree root or overhanging branch
Running over uneven grass and trail doesn’t make Broadwater a likely 5k PB destination but it’s 100% worth a visit for the views
Broadwater Park is worth a visit at any time - but why not enhance the pleasure with a 5k stroll or run around it with 250 other like-minded people

The Broadwater Farm regeneration programme will hit a major milestone after Haringey Council’s cabinet approved the contract to start work on 40 new homes and one commercial unit on the former Moselle school site on Adams Road
This will comprise of 26 one and two-bedroom flats
10 three bedroom and four four-bedroom homes with four of the two-bedroom flats being fully accessible to wheelchair users
The new homes are part of an exciting £250million programme of regeneration that has been developed in partnership with residents and wider stakeholders to ensure the highest quality of housing services across the area
This will include work starting on 294 new homes
improvements to the public realm and socio-economic activities introduced to meet the needs of the estate
Cabinet Member for Placemaking and Local Economy
“I am thrilled we are able to start work on the new homes as part of our transformation programme
“Since 2019 we have been working closely with our residents and stakeholders to ensure we deliver on a scheme that will deliver the highest quality of housing services and we will now see that come to fruition
“Residents supported our plans overwhelmingly and this is another great example of how the Haringey Deal can work to benefit our local community and provide a safe and welcoming neighbourhood
“We know the housing crisis is affecting millions across the country
but we are taking action to address that and through this first phase we will provide much needed family accommodation with 14 of the 40 new homes three bed and above
We’re already onsite spending £5.5million on upgrades to existing homes
improving road safety with the installation of two new zebra crossings and providing essential services to residents such as ICT training through the community centre
All of this is vital in helping the strong community we have already living there
“This is a significant moment for people living on the Broadwater Farm estate.”
The new homes will initially be offered to those tenants who have been decanted from Tangmere and Northolt blocks and Stapleford North residents under the Broadwater Farm Rehousing Policy
Any homes which are available following this process will be let using the Neighbourhood Moves Policy

“I’m really excited about what could happen here and if it’s successful
then this could be a great blueprint to roll this out in other areas with a significant Afro-Caribbean population.”
Those were the words of Middlesex’s Cricket4London Activation Officer
when he was talking about an upcoming initiative to help cricket undergo a revival in the notorious Broadwater Farm Estate in Tottenham
A 12-week programme ‘Hit it With Cricket’ will commence in November
giving 20 of the most talented primary school children the opportunity to grow their love for the game
hone their skills and have a shot at becoming a star of the future
This programme wouldn't have been possible without the help and support of London Elite as well as Haringey Council
which has led to the green light for the project
London Elite was founded by Clasford Stirling MBE and was instrumental in bringing calm and dialogue between the community and police over the past few decades
Stirling is supportive of the work Middlesex in the Community are doing in the area
Throughout the autumn term at five schools in the area
a talent identification process has been taking place – with around 60 or 70 children showcasing their potential to community coaches
Thayi is optimistic that the journey that Middlesex in the Community is about the embark on can have the desired impact and act as a driver for change in one of the most deprived areas of the nation’s capital city
“Cricket has this opportunity to bring people together in the Broadwater Farm area and be inclusive,” says Thayi
“It would be nice to create a community atmosphere and allow people to have fun
enjoying themselves rather than it being about winning or losing all the time
“This can be an exciting time for the sport in the area and a drive for change
If we were able to unearth some talent in that area and get them into the pathway through ACE
that would have a positive impact for the area
but it’s great to see it gathering momentum thanks to some of the work that we have done in the area previously
“We’ve had England legends Devon Malcolm and Angus Fraser at a school in the area this year
so the seeds have been sewn; now we’re just waiting for this to spring into life
“We are under no illusion that the next few weeks are critical
and it’s fitting that this is all happening this month
It is fitting also that cricket is hoping to a make a long-term return to the area for the first time in many a year
as this month marks the 39th anniversary of the Broadwater Farm riots
Broadwater Farm has had its challenges over the last four decades
following on from the riots of October 1985
These riots were sparked off the back of a police raid
which saw four police officers burst into the home of Cynthia Jarrett – who subsequently died of heart failure
“There are great memories of cricket amongst older generations and the sport was a regular topic of conversation with parents and grandparents back in the day,” says Thayi
“If you think back to blackwash and the glory days of West Indies cricket
they didn’t feel welcome at local grounds or clubs
“The local pitch was covered up by concrete in the 1970s or 1980s
so generations have missed out on what this great game can offer
It’s only through the connection of parents and grandparents that the young generation of today can resonate with cricket.”
the ECB installed or repaired 100 non-turf pitches (NTPs) with the help of funding from KP Snacks
the official snacks provider of the Hundred
with Broadwater Farm being one of the sites chosen for a new space
The initiative forms part of KP Snacks ‘Everyone In Campaign’ which aims to champion balanced lifestyles through inspiring and enabling more people to get active and involved with cricket
Kimberley Walsh & Isa Guha appeared at Broadwater Farm in North London alongside The Hundred stars including Anya Shrubsole
we’re a while away from NTPs having the desired impact in the area
it’s just we’re focused at the moment on introducing cricket on non-traditional surfaces to build an appetite for the game
“Through this upcoming programme and weeks of training for these youngsters
we are hoping that the NTP can be used by them next summer
which will pave the way for more cricket activity in the future.”
Speaking more broadly about the return of cricket to the area
Thayi went on to explain: “There is an appetite for cricket in the area amongst young people
“At least 40% of our participants are from an Afro-Caribbean background and a number of the teachers are from the same background
so they see the value of having cricket around because they recognise and connect with the game because of famous West Indies teams of bygone eras.”
We have an ACE Academy at our Indoor School in Finchley
Thayi believes that it is only right that this could act as a catalyst for getting more youngsters from the Broadwater Farm area into cricket and show them that a career in the game is possible
“This should be a natural progression and having ACE coaches helping in the area would have a huge impact
Kids will have coaches that they can identify with which is only a good thing
will help the young people feel relaxed and allow them to perform at their full potential
“Obviously these kids are young and a few years away from ACE
but it would be great to welcome them to our academy in Finchley and start their journey with Middlesex.”
He finished by adding that seeing a product of this programme representing Middlesex in years to come
would be a dream come true and could revolutionise the way cricket is seen across the area
which lies under the shadow of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
It would highlight the issues that the Broadwater Farm area has been through over the years

Broadwater Park site (click on image to expand)
The “potential cornerstone of Godalming” has reached a landmark stage after £250,000 in development cash was approved
The former Broadwater Park landfill area has been lined up to become a major community site – once it is made safe
The funding will allow for further tests at the old course area and for the land to be “capped off” to seal in waste buried underground
The entrance to the Broadwater Park Site from Meadrow
The money was signed off by Waverley Borough Council’s executive committee on Tuesday
with the project described by officers as a “complex scheme that will enable the development of a historic landfill site for safe and wider public use”
The council said there will be no decision on its future use until the options have been designed
appraised and engaged with the community – but that options being looked at include bike trails and skate parks
said: “This is a crucial step towards fulfilling the commitment we made to the community in 2023 to transform this site into a vibrant accessible public space
“It has the potential to become a cornerstone of Godalming’s recreational facilities.”
She added: “This is a first critical step to bring this space back into community use
“It is a really exciting project that will breathe new life into Broadwater Park.”
The council has decided to carry out the project in stages
but holds ambitions to open the park by 2031
with a consultation on its future being one of the most strongly engaged with and nearly 2,000 residents taking part in a council survey – more than it got on local government reorganisation and dog poo
Lib Dem leader of Waverley Borough Council
said: “I’m so delighted that we’ve agreed on the funding to further develop this very necessary and exciting transformation of Broadwater Park into a new
“We engaged with residents to hear their vision for the park
and their enthusiastic response brought forth many fantastic ideas
“The local community is incredibly invested in the future of the site
Their support and patience will be invaluable going forward
as this will be a long and complex project
given the site’s former use as a landfill.”
See council report here.
As someone who lives near to Broadwater Park
although just over the Waverley/Guildford Borough boundary
I trust that there will be no polluted water leakage towards the Wey navigation or housing along the Portsmouth Road
This especially important in view of the recent flooding events over the last 25 years

It’s the first parkrun after the clocks sprung forward last weekend and it’s already feeling more spring like - such a super-sunny (although perhaps a little more chilly than I expected) morning
and the trees starting to bud into that special spring green
I was visiting this morning with a couple of Basingstoke friends - it was my first time at Broadwater and after a pleasant drive over the Hog’s Back we found the Rugby Club for parking without difficulty
and were very impressed with the organisation to help us - a first thank you for today’s volunteers
This was then followed by a lovely warm up walk along the bank of the lake with chance to watch the ducks
before reaching the gathering point for the start
just in time for the first timers’ welcome briefing
Volunteer Nicky did a great job telling a sizeable group all about parkrun whether we were running or walking or something in between
Run Director Emi encouraged us all to thank the marshalls on our way round
and led a round of applause for all of the volunteers
She also asked where visitors today had come from but after the tourists from the Netherlands announced themselves we felt our journey was not worth a mention
Emi then set us off on our way for the first lap of two
which took in a scenic route around the aforementioned lake (such a pleasant place to run)
I did notice there were a lot of opportunities for outdoor activities in the park apart from parkrun - aside from the already mentioned rugby club (what a lot of pitches!) and golf course
I noticed a number of people fishing in the lake (they seemed set for the day)
footballers at both the football stadium and out on the public grass area
We even saw signs for (but sadly failed to see in action) croquet - I’ll maybe have to come back to try to find that happening another time
A huge thank you to all the volunteers who set up and took down the course
encouraged us as marshals out on the course
spot checked finish numbers and scanned all the barcodes
And you can be part of the team making parkrun happen at Broadwater - check for the volunteer roles that are available over the next few weeks at https://www.parkrun.org.uk/broadwater/futureroster/ and email broadwater@parkrun.com to say what you would like to do to help a future parkrun happen
earning the grateful thanks of your parkrun community
That’s the highest attendance since the 18th January event
(when there was still the impact of those New Year resolutions)
14 completed their very first parkrun today
while there were 40 first time visitors to Broadwater (including me!) - hoping you enjoyed your time in the sun today and will come back to do it all again soon
Anniken Mortimer completed her 25th parkrun
allowing her to order a purple milestone shirt
Unofficial milestone (not t-shirt earning but still worth celebrating) - Kirk Conroy did his 350th parkrun
For the volunteers:Lucas Lindsay volunteered for the 10th time as a junior and can order a white volunteer milestone shirt
Thank you everyone for making us so welcome at Broadwater parkrun
If you happen to be at War Memorial Park Basingstoke on a parkrun morning be sure to say hello
We arrived at Broadwater on a crisp sunny September Saturday morning
It was our first time here so we arrived early
We headed to the rugby club where there were already car park marshals directing us where to park
It soon started getting busier and whilst we waited for the start
we managed to find some seating in a sun trap to keep warm. The first timers brief explained that the course was two anti clockwise loops of the rugby pitch (on which you must keep to the perimeter) then towards the woods where you do two anti clockwise laps of the lake. The very friendly run director
introduced the 150th Parkrun at Broadwater
There were some first timers here today and also some tourists from Winchester and Cornwall
We were warned about the narrow sections and tree roots on the course and then we set off to the start which is not in the same place as the finish (albeit not far).We set off around the rugby pitch for the two anticlockwise laps
There were plenty of marshals there to ensure we did not stray onto the rugby pitch
We then headed across the bridge and on some gravel before reaching some grass and entering the woods
We then made our way along the lake and up a slight incline to hit some more grass by the football pitches and to reach the turnaround point to head back along the other side of the lake
Once we were back at the start of the woods we commenced lap two
trail and paths and it was all clearly marked out with plenty of friendly marshals along the way to keep you on the right path
Luckily as the weather had been a bit drier this week it wasn’t too muddy
I thought it might get congested due to the narrow paths but it seemed to work fine
There was a coffee place at the start but it wasn’t open today so as we were tight on time we decided to head straight home
I did notice another coffee hut on the otherwise of the rugby pitch which if we had more time we would have gone and had a coffee and a wander around the park
So we will come back to enjoy this Parkrun again soon and spend a bit more time in this beautiful park
(Editor Note) Thanks to Annabel Taylor for your lovely write up

The finalists moving forward in the ULM Presidential Search are:
The semi-finalist interviews for these candidates can be viewed here
I’ve completed 408 parkruns at 203 different locations and on a current tourist streak of 96 (it was 106
I’ve completed all but 2 of the parkruns within the M25 (I’m just waiting until they’re event numbers that I’ve not done – to fill gaps in my Wilson Index on the 5k app)
so I’m starting to run those that are on the perimeter and a bit further afield
I picked Broadwater as its event number was one of the Wilson Index numbers that I needed
I had a straightforward train journey via London Victoria and Clapham Junction
where I met Run Director Ruth Lyon and the rest of the volunteer team
there is a well-equipped park with zip line for the little and not so little kids
The first timers welcome was given by Sean Carroll and the main briefing by Ruth Lyon
It was a lovely sunny and warm start to parkrun this morning and I was happy to be able to dig my shorts out again
The course is 2 anticlockwise laps around the perimeter of the rugby pitch before entering the woods
There were then 2 anticlockwise laps of the park
before re-entering the woods to arrive at the finish line
The route was nice and flat on a mixture of grass
There were lots of lovely marshals who were supportive and encouraging all the way around
Volunteering is such a rewarding experience and essential to ensure parkruns can go ahead safely
Once a parkrun has been cancelled with parkrun HQ
so it is important that the volunteer rota is filled as early in the week as possible
It saves the Run Directors a lot of unnecessary stress
due to not enough volunteers ☹ If each parkrunner/ walker volunteered a handful of times each year
all parkruns would have sufficient volunteers to go ahead safely
who gave up their time at Broadwater parkrun
Did you know you can have the best of both worlds and be able to run AND volunteer on a Saturday
they can help with barcode scanning after their run
Roles available can be found on each parkrun event website or on the 5k app
Simply email the event you wish to volunteer at with your barcode number and you’ll be welcomed with open arms
I was able run and help with post-event close down
finish tokens and barcode scanning are great for when you fancy giving your legs a rest
Don’t forget junior parkruns on Sundays; they also welcome volunteers too
For those of you who enjoy the challenges on the 5k app
Volunteer Ratio and Volunteer Tourist challenges
There was a great mix of people running and walking at Broadwater parkrun today; approximately 43:57 female: male
Runners and walkers ranged from Thomas Rothwell and Bruce Hubbard (on their very first parkruns) in the JM10 category to Jean Drummond in the VW75-79 and Malcolm Eric Vaughan and Michael Radford in the VM80-84 age categories
proving that parkrun really is for everyone
There were 171 runners and walkers finishing at Broadwater parkrun
It is well worth downloading the 5k app to your phone
There were 8 people showing up in the results as “unknown”
You can access your barcode using this app
ensuring you get a credit for each parkrun/walk you complete
plus there are some great challenges for running/ walking and volunteering to keep you motivated
I also find it really useful for when I am doing tourism
to find new parkruns and information such as parking/ facilities that they offer
The first finisher was Ben Blamey on his 1st visit to Broadwater parkrun
First female finisher and 3rd finisher overall was Laura Addie from Hastings Runners on her 1st visit to Broadwater parkrun with a time of 19:36
The highest age grading was 79.82% achieved by Ewan Cox
The highest female age grading was Ramona Thevenet from The Stragglers with 78.96%
We had 6 people join us for their first parkrun today
Saturday mornings will never be the same again!
I hope they continues this journey and one day earn those lovely red 50
visiting Broadwater for the first time from Farnham and Maidstone amongst them
Today’s award for runniest runner goes to Ramona Thevenet
Norfolk and Clermont Water Front in the USA
Ramona has been parkrunning since the 22nd October 2005 – parkrunner number 1786

the cattle that Dennis Broadwater and his daughter Laura Keller tend to on the family farm look like any other bovine
The bloodlines of the cattle trace back to Broadwater’s grandparents’ herd
making them — as much as the pasture on which they graze
the ground where Broadwater grows his own hay and the people who make it all work — part of the family story played out season after season
“A lot of the things that I do on the farm
I’ve learned from either my grandpa or my dad
We’ve put in some embryos this last spring
so that’s sort of a new avenue we’re taking to improve our genetics
The 470 acres of land outside of Batesville has seen great change over six generations of family ownership
it was continued by the late John Robert and Mabel Hodges Broadwater
who Dennis recalls farming the White River bottoms with mules to raise corn and cotton
Broadwater’s parents introduced a trucking company into the family mix
as well as a poultry operation that would eventually grow to 20,000 laying hens for producing broilers
Changing times and changing market dynamics led the family into focusing strictly on cattle while looking elsewhere to diversify revenue streams
Both Broadwater and Keller have master’s degrees
another element that stands in sharp contrast to previous generations
I’ve taught at the community college for years
I was the director of the student success center here
and I helped all the students with tutoring,” he said
“I really wouldn’t say I applied my education to farming
but it helped me keep a job outside of farming to keep the farming going in the hard times
but we’ve had a lot of lean years that if I hadn’t had my job
I wouldn’t have been able to keep the farm going.”
who attended Harding University in Searcy on a basketball scholarship
has long since started her kids in the family traditions in hopes that one of them will embrace the line of work and take the farm into the future as she has chosen to do
I just feel so blessed to get to raise them here and for them to have the foundation of growing up on a farm,” she said
“I really feel like there’s no better way to raise your kids
There’s so many life lessons that they learn
I would love for them to come back here one day
but I’ll just support them in whatever they want to do.”

HELENA — Broadwater County voters will have the choice of permanently continuing a mill levy that makes up a large portion of the budget for the Broadwater County Sheriff's Office
"They're already paying it," said Sheriff and Coroner of Broadwater County Nick Rauser
"It's not going up from what they're paying."
Sheriff Rauser says the 2020 levy approved by voters is currently about one-third of their budget
with roughly 77% of that going to personnel costs
Rauser says if this levy fails, they could only get by cutting positions like the School Resource Officer for the Townsend School District
a resident deputy on the county's south end
We just need to get this passed right now to be able to maintain this and not have to worry about it again," said Rauser
"Then our only worry is making sure our citizens of Broadwater County are safe."
The top end would be similar to what property owners are assessed at now
about $13.50 a month on a home valued at $300,000
the levy would result in a lower property tax assessment for 2026
"I know that some people struggle with paying their taxes and bills
We decided this year we would cut it by 20%."
Rauser says the levy would allow them to maintain where they are at while possibly improving technology in the office
"I have to make it permanent because I can't have something that expires every five years or seven years and expect to hire people to come here and do a 20-year retirement," said Sheriff Rauser
The office has two records rooms filled with paper records dating back roughly a decade after Montana became a state
They hope to get those records eventually digitalized and sort through thousands of pieces of evidence to create more space and organization
basically all the extra help to get that done will go away
and it's going to be neglected for another – it's hard to say how long."
and the sheriff's office offers tours of the office and detention center

An isolation that is about to be destroyed by the arrival of a young grieving video gamer
The Unraveling brings together Ghost Road’s trademark poetic language and movement techniques with various other elements ranging from video games
Appalachian and Scandinavian-influenced folk music

The Casino footbridge over the Richmond River has been damaged by recent floodwater and is closed while repairs are done.
Residents are asked to respect the closure signs and not cross the bridge until work has finished as parts of the structure may be unstable from the damage
This footbridge floods easily but that will change when a suspension bridge is built across the Richmond River
It has already been funded and will cost more than $3million and will connect Queen Elizabeth Park to Casino
This is to replace the centre bascule span with a new concrete span
The work is expected to be finished by June

HELENA — Nine jurors in Broadwater County unanimously ruled there was no criminal activity in an officer-involved crash that led to the death of one man
With the crash occurring in Broadwater County
the Sheriff and Coroner of Lewis and Clark County
The incident happened almost a year ago
when 30-year-old Tyler Leslie led Montana Highway Patrol troopers and Broadwater County deputies in a high-speed chase on Highway 287 north of Townsend
"All I knew is that someone had been possibly running someone off the road at some point
and someone had reported seeing the driver opening the door and vomiting out of the vehicle while they were driving," said
Trooper Dietrich Lind with MHP
He was one of the responding officers and spoke with Leslie at the initial crash site
"The way I was talking to him and our interactions
he seemed extremely cooperative and very polite."
Trooper Lind suspected Leslie was intoxicated
and Leslie admitted he was drinking when the trooper asked
Leslie's truck swerved into oncoming traffic
and the deputy survived but suffered serious injuries
The Montana Highway Patrol investigated the collision with the deputy's cruiser
Investigators say tire tracks and video evidence from Trooper Lind's car showed no obstructions in the road that Leslie could have been avoiding
A separate investigation by the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) found open alcoholic beverages in Leslie's truck
They also found some Facebook posts he made on the day of the crash
Sergeant Ryan Eamon with DCI read one of the posts saying
"' I know none of this makes sense right now
and I'm sorry that I took the easy way out
but I can't continue to do what I'm doing because I am weak and hurting so much.'"
An autopsy showed that Leslie's cause of death was multiple blunt-force trauma
He had a blood alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit
which are commonly used to treat people with depression
DCI found that Leslie was not wearing his seatbelt during the crash
"All the evidence of this crash suggested that it was intentional," Eamon said
The jury found Leslie's death was self-inflicted and not caused by the criminal actions of another person.
