By the time the pandemic started I was living with my partner in a five-bedroom house in Buckhurst Hill
and had co-founded a communications company

I had a lot of time to think during the pandemic. Lockdown showed us that people could go and live where they wanted
and I knew I didn’t want to be in London any more
As the Epping Forest district enters the festive season
The high street towns of Epping Forest are becoming destination economies as people within the district and beyond are drawn to our range of shops
Free weekend parking in the Christmas run-up is expected to further boost local high street economies
Epping Forest District Council (EFDC) has announced its annual December free weekend parking including the new multi-storey car park in Epping as residents are encouraged to shop local
Five years since the start of the COVID pandemic
research shows visitor numbers to high streets across the Epping Forest district are up
Epping Forest District Council (EFDC) is encouraging more visitors by offering parking for free on weekends throughout December and inviting residents to download the Discover app for offers and information about their local high street
EFDC compared visitor data from 2019 onwards for our 6 major town centres of Buckhurst Hill
quarterly reports showed the impact of the lockdown restrictions on the 6 towns
and the return of people to local high streets as restrictions were lifted and the public were encouraged to return to normal
Visitor numbers bounced back quickly with almost all EFDC towns surpassing pre-pandemic visitor numbers by 2022
Some towns saw visitor numbers growing even further during 2023
have continued to see visitor growth and the Loughton Broadway has seen a significant increase
The 2 areas of Ongar and Waltham Abbey saw the least fluctuation in visitors during the pandemic and were the first to see their visitor numbers return to normal
with 2021 visitors just short of those in 2019
Cabinet Member for Finance and Economic Development said:
High streets are some of the most important wealth creators for our economy as well as spaces to meet and socialise
I’m so pleased with the results of this report
It’s wonderful to know our high streets are doing so well
but it is vital to avoid complacency and maintain our momentum
There is always more we can do to promote our high streets
Epping Forest District Council is investing millions in our town centres from the redevelopments in Epping to the refurbishments in the Broadway
Christmas is a vital time for retailers and especially for many of our small businesses that give Epping Forest its special character and identity
Free parking is another important annual boost
Please continue to support our high streets this Christmas by shopping local
I’m delighted to announce that EFDC can help residents do this by
offering free weekend parking throughout December
Residents and visitors will be able to use any EFDC-operated public car park free of charge at weekends in December while they do their Christmas shopping or visit family and friends. Qualis Group Ltd is also offering free weekend parking at the Cottis Yard multi-storey car park in Epping
Visit the website for a list of EFDC-operated public car parks:
Parking on bank holidays is free in all EFDC-operated public car parks
There is no need to get a ticket at any EFDC or Qualis-owned car park during weekends in December
Many local businesses are also part of the Discover app
which offers residents promotions and information about places to eat
where to shop and fun events for all ages in their town

Stuart Pearce was England captain in 1992-93
Former England full-back Stuart Pearce says he is now feeling "very good" following a major health scare during a flight from Las Vegas to London earlier this month
The plane had to be diverted to Canada after 62-year-old Pearce was treated by staff and medically-trained passengers
He was special guest at four Essex Senior League matches over the weekend to help mark Non-League Day
"I'm very good at the moment. The flight attendants were fantastic to me. I spent 10 days in Canada, the hospital staff there were fantastic, I was in good hands," he told BBC Essex
Pearce was plucked from non-league football with Wealdstone by Coventry City and went on to play more than 400 games for Nottingham Forest before spells with Newcastle United
He also won 78 international caps and later managed Forest
Manchester City and the Great Britain team at the London 2012 Olympics
Pearce 'humbled' by Forest support
Pearce in hospital after medical emergency on plane
Pearce believes non-league still has an important role in developing talent
again illustrated by Dan Burn's rise to the current England squad
as he watched Buckhurst Hill's 1-1 draw with Hullbridge Sports
"So many youngsters get associated with Premier League clubs or professional clubs and get released
"What they must understand is that the game is about playing it for the love of it
There's always (the possibility of) a second chance
"As a 13-year-old I was released by the club I supported
and Wealdstone gave me another chance and eventually I got to where I did in the game
"But that wasn't the important thing
the important thing for me was playing a game you absolutely love
the camaraderie of the dressing room and camaraderie of team sport."
Pearce said playing at non-league level provided a release from having to go work most mornings
all of a sudden you get a little bit of recognition and at the age of 21 my life changed and I turned into a professional footballer," he added
"(But) I always look back with really fond memories of my time as a non-league player
I keep in contact with my old club Wealdstone and some of the players I used to play alongside

2 new housing developments were officially opened by relatives of Mick Fitch and James Brokenshire
Fitch House is named after former Waltham Abbey Mayor
Fitch House is due to be finished in May 2024
It comprises of eight 1 and 2-bedroom flats
Brokenshire Court in Buckhurst Hill is named after the Rt Hon James Brokenshire MP
This development consists of seven 1 and 2-bedroom flats and is due for completion in June 2024
both sites were officially opened at a small celebration
which included Epping Forest District Council (EFDC) Councillors and staff
attended as special guests to officially open Fitch House
cut the ribbon as guest of honour at Brokenshire Court along with Epping Forest MP the Rt Hon Dame Eleanor Laing and EFDC Councillor Holly Whitbread
These homes will supplement the existing stock of around 6,500 properties and help house some of the 1,500 people in the district who are waiting on the housing register for a home
All the flats have higher than average level of insulation which aims to help tenants with their energy bills
Both blocks have solar panels on the roof and are fitted with a mechanical ventilation with heat recovery system in order to bring fresh filtered air into and take stale air out of the properties
All homes have been awarded Gold by the Secure by Design police security initiative
giving that extra peace of mind to tenants
the ground floor flats in both developments have been fitted with wet room showers instead of baths
Twin electric vehicle chargers are being installed on both schemes
and the infrastructure is being put in place to allow for more chargers to be installed to meet future needs
I was delighted to be a part of both opening events
It was a pleasure to meet members of both the Brokenshire and Fitch family
It was wonderful to see the different types of new properties being built by the council
These homes are developed with the resident in mind
Each new home is made to be energy efficient
something that has become increasingly important to us all
Cabinet Member for Housing and Strategic Partnerships said:
These new developments are part of a wider project to build more affordable housing
Epping Forest District Council is one of the few councils still committed to building new council homes despite challenging economic times
This project shows how dedicated the council is to delivering affordable housing for local people

there are fresh signs that a new generation of Jews are moving further afield into Essex","publisher":{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"NewsMediaOrganization","name":"The Jewish Chronicle","url":"https://www.thejc.com","description":"Founded in 1841
there are fresh signs that a new generation of Jews are moving further afield into Essex
Aleks Phillips
Redbridge boasted a Jewish community of some 30,000
reflecting the migration from London’s East End after the Second World War
the population had dwindled to barely 10,000
fuelled significantly by an exodus to North-West London and the Hertfordshire suburbs
The diminishing community has led to a number of synagogue mergers in recent years
primarily involving United Synagogue congregations
there is concrete evidence of a Jewish renaissance
Loughton Federation and Buckhurst Hill Chabad congregations expanding
Chabad has now established an Epping branch to cater for a dispersed population
Even Harlow Reform is experiencing membership growth
although chair Alan Cohen admits it is “more a trickle than a storm”
Despite Epping Chabad only being operational since Rosh Hashanah
say they made contact with 150 Jews in the area and have between 30 and 40 regular attendees
With three fridge freezers in Rabbi Posen’s “office” and the bimah stored in the shed
the couple are looking forward to relocating to larger premises
“Rabbi Posen wouldn’t have moved out to Epping if he didn’t know for sure that there were enough Jewish people in that area to warrant there being a rabbi and a presence there,” Rabbi Odom Brandman
who runs the Chabad of Buckhurst Hill with wife Henny
And Rabbi Posen notes that many of those involved with Chabad in the area formerly lived in Redbridge or Ilford
He has also come across families residing as far afield as Ongar and Church Langley
One person had been recruited after following him into a bank on Christmas Eve
“You can’t know what’s going to happen in Epping
But seeing the success that is possible [in Buckhurst Hill] and the amount of Jews that are out there
it’s just up to you to put in the work and get them to arrive.”
When the Buckhurst Hill Chabad was founded in 2005
events could attract up to 100 participants
Now the core membership is 100 families and the organisation is in contact with more than 1,000 in the area
It has held 25 barmitzvahs in the past two years and struggled to seat the 250 people who came for Rosh Hashanah last year
Buckhurst Hill is also looking to transfer to “bigger and more purpose built” premises and there is even talk of a mikveh
Chigwell US’s Rabbi Baruch Davis is well placed to talk about the development of the community in Essex
Today it numbers close to 900 families (or 1,400 adult members)
“We’re in the happy situation of being too big for our premises,” he says
we may sometimes have four different children’s services and these facilities are very poor
Rabbi Davis reports that plans are being formulated to renovate the site to provide enlarged premises
“This is an indication of two things,” he says
the growth of the community over the years and the fact that we have a lot of young families
The second is a statement of optimism going forward that the community has a very strong future.”
chairman Gary Stern reports that since Rabbi Yanky and Rochel Abrams arrived last spring
there has been a “massive resurgence” in membership — from 180 families to 220
And the number of children enrolled in its cheder has quadrupled from 10 to 40
“There are a lot of kids living in the Loughton and Epping areas
Certain parents are not sending their kids to Jewish schools but still want the Jewish identity.”
The Chabad rabbis say that young professionals — and young families — account for a sizeable proportion of the new migration
Laraine Warren — who organises the kosher catering for the Buckhurst Hill Chabad — attributes this to property being “more affordable than North London
“The greenery and the surroundings are very pleasant
You can literally drive 60 seconds down the road and feel like you’re in the country.”
says that “about half of my friends moved to North-West London over the years
But if we’re going out in the summer — picnicking or whatever — they come to us
before moving out to Loughton with his wife and joining the local Federation synagogue
“We bought a place in Loughton because it was a new build development and quite reasonably priced
so it gave us the opportunity to get on the housing ladder,” he recalls
vibrant high street and it’s very well connected to the city and the West End.”
where he runs a local recruitment firm.“A lot of people put their financial position before their religion,” he says
“People will move where they can afford a house.”
there is talk of a push away from Redbridge
Rabbi Brandman says that as East London becomes more diverse
Jews may want to “move on” (though the area’s diversity is praised by others)
The CST’s figures show that reported antisemitic incidents in Redbridge have risen over the past few years
While some — like Ms Warren and her husband Greg
who are in their 70s —lament the closure of kosher butchers and delis in Redbridge
Ms Rose views this as evidence of changing shopping habits
“I can still buy a great deal of my kosher meat from the supermarket
so some of that decline in butchers is not to do with decline in the Jewish community
It’s to do with the way we live our lives.”
Rabbi Brandman acknowledges that many of those moving in are “less religious and less committed”
reporting that most of those who attend his Chabad are not affiliated to a shul
“From Golders Green to Hendon it’s a five minute drive
From Hendon to Edgware it’s another five minute drive
Whereas the Essex community is less engaged
less religious and so much more spread out.”
Rabbi Posen notes: “There are people who have decided that they like the greener areas of Buckhurst Hill and Epping
Nonetheless Ms Rose maintains that the Redbridge-based Jewish schools —Ilford Jewish Primary
Clore Tikva and Kantor King Solomon High — are “very much the heart of the community”
where his two daughters are pupils — reasons that “because of transport links
maybe you don’t need to live on top of [Jewish amenities] anymore
because you can still get to them in your car
Mr Sinclair says it takes him “two minutes to get to Buckhurst Hill
I don’t think the community is as spread out as people think it is.”
Rabbi Brandman sees the area as a “fully connected community”
Rabbis in the area meet every six-to-eight weeks and have a WhatsApp group
“We have a very good working relationship,” Rabbi Brandman says
Mr Stern refers to the two Chabad centres as “our partners
Rabbi Davis observes that “in Buckhurst Hill
Rabbi Brandman has succeeded in attracting a lot of individuals
including some of our own members who were not so motivated when they were here”
Rabbi Brandman says that with Chabad well established in Buckhurst Hill
“some more traditional Jewish people who may not have moved here five years ago have now moved here”
Mr Sinclair — whose two children attend “play date” at Buckhurst Hill Chabad on Mondays — says the changing demographics demonstrate that “at the end of the day
the Jewish population “is a significant number and you can’t write off a number like that
And a lot of them feel passionately about the community and they want to make it work
Judaism in country Essex is very much alive — and it’s growing.”
Keeping your home safe from fire is an important part of living safe and well
That’s why we offer free Home Safety Visits to all residents across Essex
Two flats have been completely destroyed after a serious fire in Buckhurst Hill yesterday (Sunday 21 May)
Firefighters were alerted by neighbours to a fire in the garden and was spread into the property which consisted of four flats (two ground floor and two first floor)
When firefighters arrived they reported the fire was well developed and was affecting one ground floor flat
Essex firefighters were joined by two crews from London Fire Brigade to tackle the fire
which was on the border of Essex and London
where our firefighters had to work exceptionally hard to tackle the fire and stop it spreading to the neighbouring properties
"We had four fire engines and our aerial ladder platform (a type of fire engine with a large ladder platform which we use to get up high and pour water on a fire from above) at the incident
"The cause of the fire was found to be smouldering coals, which had been used in a fire pit in the garden the night before
The coals had been tipped out and left on the ground right next to the conservatory
"Incidents like this show how important it is to ensure your coals/wood or anything used in a fire pit or barbecue are completely cool before you move or dispose of them
It could take up to 48 hours for ash/coals to be completely cool
but you can speed it up by pouring water over them and completely submerging them
"I want to encourage everyone who has a fire pit or chiminea at home to follow our simple safety tips to avoid a fire like this:
"I'd like to add my thanks to my crews and our colleagues from London Fire Brigade
who fought really hard to minimise the damage as much as we could."

Head of showrooms at Just Add Water Charlotte Schofield talks about elevating the brand with its refurbished showroom in Buckhurst Hill
Head of showrooms at Just Add Water Charlotte Schofield talks about re-establishing and elevating its retail brand with its refurbished boutique showroom in Buckhurst Hill
Just Add Water has recently refurbished its Buckhurst Hill showroom in Essex to create a boutique-style showroom
The transformation of the two-floor space has been tactical
moving the retail business to a more prestigious position
and acting as a footprint for the Just Add Water brand
Head of showrooms Charlotte Schofield said she made the proposal to the board of directors to upscale the bathroom showrooms as the lower mid sales started to tighten
“We had to dress the showrooms for the people buying bathrooms
as Charlotte says “We have seen the average order value lift significantly with the introduction of the new products used in the refurbishment.”
The refurbishment of the flagship showroom
has seen an investment of around £60,000 including a new lighting scheme
The showroom has been designed so suppliers have visibility alongside the Just Add Water brand
which had an open plan office shared with its parent company Fayers
has been divided to create a boutique presentation area with TVs for design presentations along with coffee machines and cold beverages being available to customers
“It’s completely changed the experience for the customer”
says Charlotte who points out they are assisted by a three-strong sales team with decades of experience between them
Charlotte needed to carefully re-design the supply strategy
offer return on investment for each display space and to create a Just Add Water brand
She continues: “I don’t like our team having to compete with quotes that are cheaper online or with competitors in the local vicinity
“I made a conscious effort to push forward with different products
suppliers to other local showrooms to reduce this from happening – my key driver was to differentiate our customer proposition in every way possible
“I like the teams to enjoy their whole sales process
It’s an excellent visualisation of what consumers are going to end up with and a great way to have customer interaction and experience.”
The showroom has always housed many leading brands
but Charlotte says it meant Just Add Water lost some visual identity
Wanting to be destination for every customer wanting a new bathroom
she focused on suppliers which partner the aims of Just Add Water
Charlotte says: “I first focused on the suppliers we already had solid relationships with such as Crosswater
“We planned their areas out to give the best visibility in the showroom of their brand
but whilst ultimately elevating our own brand at the same time
“Our suppliers have all showed us real dedication about wanting to work with Just Add Water as a brand
“We want to be a destination for every customer wanting a new bathroom
that’s why it was so important for us to offer a good
Charlotte adds: “The refurbishment saw us introduce exciting new brands into the showroom
all chosen for specific reasons to suit current and future trends in the industry – ultimately supporting wider more exciting choice
Charlotte admits the 7-month transformation took longer than expected
The midpoint of transition was highly emotional and frustrating
but its taught me that taking the time to get it right is far more important than rushing to the finish line” now
she still remains overwhelmed with the end result: “This always felt like it needed this to happen
Charlotte explains “they bring us customers and in turn we recommend them to our new customers.”
Just Add Water has a space dedicated to mirrors and mirrored cabinets
But she points out Just Add Water manages the entire bathroom project
60% of the Buckhurst Hill customers remain professional “regulars”
which work on £2million+ houses and have projects of anywhere in-between 5 to 7 bathrooms
with Charlotte both looking after the marketing and the sales from that channel
it’s both an exciting and rewarding platform for us
“It also allows our reach wider than the local areas we are based in
I find that when they know their questions are being answered by a person
“I do anything from Virtual Worlds designs to Q&AS its perfect for customer interaction and gathering market research.”
she adds sustainability has moved higher up the design agenda: “We get asked about it more now than ever
We always want to promote water-saving brassware
and energy saving products saying it’s going to save money and you can feel greener at the end of the day.”
“I think what we’ve done is create a massive opportunity
We have clearly raised the bar & quality of products and elevated our customer experience
The supplier strategy was developed upon choosing product not available locally
“We understand our brand and our DNA and can do a ‘copy and paste’ somewhere else with the understanding of what matters to us”
Director Nick Horton also points out: “There’s still a lot more to do
and convinced the shareholders this was where we needed to invest money and the local area is now so aligned and receptive to what we have created
What comes through strongly is that developing personal relationships will continue to be key to the success of Just Add Water from its suppliers
Nick concludes: “The key thing in the showroom is the staff

Together with Loughton and Chigwell, Buckhurst Hill forms part of the affluent Essex “golden triangle”, known to reality TV fans as Towie country. But it was the coming of the railway in 1856 that put the area on the map, allowing families to leave crowded London for the nearby countryside. “It offers the best of both worlds,” says Steven Neville, a councillor. “It’s 40 minutes from central London and you’re surrounded by nature.
