Market Place Travel has become the go-to agency for travellers across the UK and even as far afield as Miami
thanks to a savvy move to invest in social media
In 2024 the agency expanded the social media team from one to three members of staff
who now look after more than 30,000 followers on Facebook
and can often be found hosting Zoom calls into the evening to discuss holiday options with followers.
But for local customers the hub of the action is the buzzy store in Burton upon Trent
where the business relocated to in 2020 after it was founded seven years ago
It boasts stylish interiors with a drinks area
illuminated ‘let us take you there’ signs and Market Place Travel scented candles
which is often used by customers booking trips for special occasions and those who need a quieter environment
A host of initiatives were introduced in 2024 to show customers how much their business means to the agency
including extra perks with the existing Market Place Travel Loyalty Gold Card
As well as getting a £50 discount on their next booking
customers receive priority booking and complimentary upgrades
Expanded out-of-hours support and a new range of personalised travel experiences were also introduced last year
alongside an increased focus on sustainable travel
New programmes were launched to support staff
including flexible working for new recruits and the option to work from home
The team have more than 200 years of travel experience between them
but still devote regular time for training to improve their knowledge
and frequently join overseas training trips
This is a team who are truly unflappable in an emergency
such as when a newlywed couple arrived in tears after booking a honeymoon online
only to lose it when the tour operator collapsed
Director Karen worked into the night to plan a new trip for them
and even upgraded their accommodation and added airport lounge passes at the agency’s own expense
turning a potential disaster into a dream honeymoon

Both are finalists in the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) annual Britain in Bloom competition, their inclusion is a testament to the high-quality floral displays and outstanding community engagement fostered.
The RHS competition inspires community groups in towns, cities and villages to make positive changes to their local environment through horticultural, environmental and community action and this year it is celebrating this through its ‘friendship’ themed 60th anniversary.
A total of 52 community gardening groups have secured a place and the winners will be announced in the autumn.
Burton upon Trent will contest in the small city category, while Winshall will feature in the urban category. It follows an impressive record of 25 consecutive gold medals between them at the regional Heart of England In Bloom awards.
This milestone marks a momentous occasion for the Staffordshire borough, as it is unusual to have two entries from the same area competing at the national level.
Councillor Dennis Fletcher, cabinet member for environment and climate change, said: “This is a thoroughly outstanding achievement to have two East Staffordshire entries in the national finals and is testimony to the amount of community projects that take place throughout the borough.”
A bee-friendly borough, you will discover old bikes transformed into unusual planters, a community orchard, a community garden at the community centre, bug hotels and a wildlife woodland as well as a range of other projects.
In preparation for the finals, several exciting projects are already underway for 2024. These include enhancements to town centre floral displays with volunteer support from McDonald's, as well as increased sustainable planting initiatives in Winshill.
The focus on sustainability reflects a broader trend in horticulture competitions where environmental consciousness is becoming increasingly important. Sustainable planting not only ensures that floral displays remain vibrant throughout the year but also contributes to local biodiversity and reduces maintenance costs.
Mr Fletcher added his thanks to all the volunteers, community groups, and local businesses who’ve helped deliver a wide range of community projects.
The community effort behind these entries cannot be overstated. Local schools have been involved in planting projects, and educating children about horticulture and environmental stewardship. The involvement of diverse community members—from school children to seniors—has also fostered a sense of unity and pride within East Staffordshire.
Community groups have organised events such as garden tours and workshops on sustainable gardening practices and businesses have also played a crucial role by sponsoring various floral displays and providing volunteers to help maintain them.
Beyond just looking stunning, these projects have had a tangible impact on community well-being. Studies have shown that green spaces can significantly improve mental health by providing residents with areas for relaxation and recreation.
ID Verde is supporting Burton and Winshill’s Britain in Bloom entry. A spokesperson for the company said: “Our teams are putting the final preparations in place and ensuring that the finer details are as near perfect as they can be. We have worked harder than ever to elevate the standards to a higher level than we ever thought was possible.”

The King pulled himself a pint when he visited a brewery making a name for itself in the country’s former centre of beer production
Charles visited family-owned Tower Brewery in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire
where dozens of breweries shipped millions of barrels of beer across the country and the globe during the industry’s 19th century heyday
After pouring a pint called Gone for a Burton
a traditional mid-strength beer brewed by Tower
brewery owner John Mills cheekily asked Charles: “Going to have a slurp of that
and held up his pint as he said: “To your very good health,” then joked: “I could pass the rest on to them,” as he looked at the press
Mr Mills joined the King at the brewery’s bar
pulling himself a pint of his Imperial IPA in the town from where India pale ale was first exported in the 1820s
but then suggested they try something stronger
Behind them was a bottle of The Spirit of Burton
a 41% proof Tower spirit distilled from IPA which
and said “interesting – yes it’s supercharged”
charity workers and executives from other brewery firms and chatted to Monica Holton
who set up her Caribbean spice company Datties Soul Food during the pandemic
Charles said Caribbean dishes “can blow your head off”
and the entrepreneur replied “especially the jerk chicken”
the conversation turned to football and Charles joked: “Most of these managers and coaches seem to come from Holland or Sweden.”
Before leaving, he was presented with a bottle of the spirit he tasted and another of King’s Ale, a commemorative tipple bottled in 1902 from a batch of beer his great-great-grandfather King Edward VII helped to stir when he visited the Bass brewery in Burton.

Karen McElroy and Jane Elson believed they'd win our lottery when they signed up nearly a decade ago
but with every passing year they started to doubt it would ever happen
Now the best friends and neighbours' belief has paid off after they each banked a share of a £1 million prize
said: "I've been doing Postcode Lottery for years with my friend Jane
and we always said we're going to win it one day
I'm just completely shocked and can't believe it
and that I'm going to wake up in the morning
"And I never thought that was going to happen
Karen and Jane are among 10 winners in Burton after their postcode
was announced as the winner of our Millionaire Street prize today
who were standing side-by-side when they received the incredible news
told us how this win will hopefully spark a change in their fortunes
Karen was diagnosed with womb cancer three years ago and battled back to full health
only to find that the disease had returned last year
I've had a couple of cancer diagnoses in the last three years
I was diagnosed with womb cancer in June 2022
and then I had a full hysterectomy and some radiotherapy
and then everything sort of got back to normal
And I had to have surgery to have that removed and the whole thing that goes with that
"I've just had my last chemotherapy on the 28th of February
That's why I don't have any eyebrows or eyelashes."
Karen is awaiting more test results next week following her treatment but admitted she's hopeful for the future
She added: "Things have got a lot better recently
and it's been a bit of a tough journey through the treatment and everything
getting this today ahead of my results next week is just massive."
Karen wanted to use some of her good fortune to help Queen's Hospital Burton and thank the doctors
She said: "I think I'm also going to give a donation to the hospital where they've been treating me over the last few years as well."
Karen spoke of her delight that close chum Jane won alongside her
The pair have been friends and neighbours for over 20 years and spend lots of time together walking their dogs and practising yoga
especially as she's had a tough time recently as well
"We're going to have such a fun time this year after both of us having a really tough time over the last few years
winning it together like we said we would is going to really pay off and has come at the best time really."
Mum-of-two Karen worked as a PR and communications freelancer but had to give up her business as her cancer treatment intensified
She said: "I'm no longer running my own business
This is the first year that I haven't had my own income
I was just at the stage where I'm thinking
It's really come at a good time and given me a big boost."
Karen's son Aidan cheered as she collected her £100k prize
but her paramedic daughter Niamh was on duty
and her husband Aidan was turfing at a building site more than 100 miles away
Both were on tenterhooks waiting for a phone call
and he's just in shock because he's out labouring on a site at the moment
"I'm going to give some of this to my son and daughter
mentioned her disbelief after getting a call from us the day before she received her prize
She said: "It was an amazing experience that I thought would never happen ever
Karen chipped in: "I was in bed and heard a knock at the door
I opened it thinking it was a cold caller and I was ready to say
"I really didn't think it was true; I had to be convinced
I think when he said there's a film crew up the road
Jane already has her first purchase in mind: a new car
but it needs to be big enough to fit her nine-year-old Doberman
She also revealed that the win would help boost her retirement fund and that she'd treat her son Tom with her winnings
She said: "I'm definitely going to buy a car with a share of it
I have no idea what I'll get as I've just decided to get one today
Kym Ellis was the first person to be presented with her prize
Kym started playing Postcode Lottery with her wife Andrea and now they're planning an epic road trip to Italy
And they'll take their Miniature Schnauzer
She said: "I signed us up as part of our joint bank account and thought
She added: "I will be the spender; Andrea will say the money should go into savings
I think there'll be a very nice holiday on the cards
We drove to Italy a few years ago with our previous dog
It's going to make such a massive difference - it's just amazing."
Natalie said her winnings will go a long way to helping her son and daughter
She said: "My daughter is at uni in her first year
and this will help with accommodation costs and study costs
My son is 17 and has just started learning to drive
Now Natalie and her husband Paul Mellor are pondering a holiday after putting one off in recent years
we can upgrade my car that needs upgrading
Others on the street cheering cheques were Lesley Brooksby and Bruce Barlow
And the neighbours' win means several charities in and around Burton-on-Trent will benefit from vital funding
One organisation, Burton Albion Community Trust, has received £50,000 from Postcode Community Trust
which is supported by players of People's Postcode Lottery
employability and alternative education programmes designed to inspire
they engage with more than 7,000 people per week
with ages ranging from four years to 80-plus
said: "We're extremely grateful to everyone who plays and to Postcode Community Trust
The funding is going to go a long way toward helping us with the work that we do in the communities across East Staffordshire."
Other local charities who have benefitted from this week's Millionaire Street prize include:
All funding was awarded by Postcode Community Trust
Today's prize is part of a draw promoted on behalf of Postcode Education Trust. Supported by our players, this trust delivers grant funding to organisations that provide education, particularly in emergency situations. Benefitting charities include Save the Children, Theirworld and UNICEF UK
With a minimum of 30% of each ticket price going to Charities

_REVIEW. it’s about _LIVE. words _KYLE PEDLEY. at _NATIONAL FOREST ADVENTURE FARM. tickets _OFFICIAL SITE. booking until _02nd NOV 2024
but one of the key considerations of surely any modern scare attraction is whether or not they will allow their cast members to physically grab and interact with visitors
It isn’t difficult to comprehend the arguments against doing so
It’s surely a safeguarding and insurance nightmare
and there’s always the looming hazard of a guest getting grab-happy (or worse) in retaliation
For as long as we have been reviewing (now the tenth year!)
Screamfest at the National Forest Adventure Farm in Burton upon Trent has always been a strictly hands-off experience
Not that this has in any way been a detriment or shortcoming; a regular refreshment of its mazes and some USPs such as its ominous cornfield lends it plenty of frightful return appeal
we made a point of recognising how reinvigorated and vibrant the park and its scare actors seemed across-the-board
One could perhaps even argue that not being able to tug
grab and shove necessitated Screamfest’s ghouls and nasties leads to them having to be extra inventive in their character work and interactions – something that is still gleefully on show in the likes of Freakout on Tour and Hillbilly Joe’s Zombee Zoo
2024 sees them cross that rubicon of physicality as they introduce an all-new maze from the ashes of an old favourite that allows its actors to get up close and personal and
the rest of this year’s Screamfest offering is functionally identical to last year’s great offering
and its victorian era sequences seemed particularly densely populated
The genuinely eerie trip into a young girl’s nightmare remains rich with ideas and Insidous-style creepiness and visuals
“…whatever Burton’s casting team and directors are doing
was another showcase that whatever Burton’s casting team and directors are doing
With our not being at a media or preview night
or even particularly early in the event’s run
it would be understandable if energy levels had dipped or weren’t at their peak
but every performer was truly giving it their all
Even the staffers giving the safety drills before entering the mazes seemed invested and on the ball
It’s a thread that runs through each of the returning mazes
there were numerous instances where the performers were willing to stop us in our tracks and create mini set pieces or scenarios all of our own
From a hilarious spot of body part bartering with a merchant in Zombee Zoo to a mischievous clown catching the name of a member of our party and deciding to comedically seek her out and toy with her as she trailed behind
there was no sense of these performers simply going through the motions
which can sometimes sap the energy out of a long-running attraction
It’s the second year running that the standards of performer energy and spontaneity have been particularly impressive and notable at Burton
an optional extra experience which sees visitors taken out into the reaches of the farm to paintball their way through invading alien forces
though a neat extra flourish arrives this year in the form of an introductory video which lends the things an extra sense of narrative and production value
schlocky fun that falls fairly squarely in B-movie territory
but is a neat change of pace and tone from the mazes themselves
At £10 (with additional costs for extra paintballs that if you are not good at rationing you will quite possibly need) it’s a considered extra purchase
especially with regard to the time investment if you aren’t going down the fast track route for the mazes
campy fun if you can allot it within your budgets and timetable for the evening
wandering scare actors and a performance stage all return
Set within the National Forest Adventure Farm
it has always proven itself an atmospheric and ambient hub space
landing somewhere between psychedelic rave and farmyard horror
such as caged dancers and a perturbing electric chair animatronic
along with returning favourites such as the inimitable Nurse Babs and friends wandering around
all infuse the park with character and identity at every turn
with an encounter or something to see likely at every turn
By the time Babs had taken over one of the dancing cages and was twerking and thrusting away furiously
only to be chastised by a disapproving undead girl with her dolly
there was no denying you were at Screamfest
Few scare attractions stamp their identity so indelibly and infectiously
“…Screamfest’s newest outing most certainly doesn’t pull its punches.”
But there’s no escaping the big ticket newbie that is Helcatraz
Having finally seen off what seemed like the eternal Love Hurts (though loving homages and throwbacks to that can be found scattered throughout the park and mazes)
Screamfest’s newest outing most certainly doesn’t pull its punches
An intense venture into a nightmarish industrial prison complex
Helcatraz grabs you – quite literally – from the off
Without wanting to spoil too much of what is a fantastic
This reviewer’s Helcatraz journey saw him cut off from the rest of his party for the entire maze
a suitably thrilling and frightening venture into the unknown
lighting and sound work are all excellent throughout
And the actors here are clearly relishing the freedom of permitted contact – hair will be pulled
and at the point which I was shoved head-first into a narrow crawl space early on the maze
I knew Burton weren’t going to half-heartedly tiptoe into this new approach
it unsurprisingly fostered the longest queues of the evening
Though the general length of queues did not seem too long on the Thursday evening in question
the fact that Burton allows unlimited entry to its mazes at base really lends credence to considering its fast track and other ancillary ticket options
Though prices do vary dependent on the date of visit
for weekends and Friday evenings in particular
the ability to bypass queues should be a consideration
the extra bang you get for your buck by opting for Screamfest’s ‘RIP’ ultimate ticket is notable
Whilst not exactly cheap at £89 per person
it actually works out to be very reasonably priced when broken down
offering up unlimited fast track entry to all of the mazes
a £10 food voucher to use at the food vendors
3 complementary drinks at the event’s bar (including alcoholic beverages) as well as a bespoke RIP lanyard
It is the experience we enjoyed on our visit
and means you are able to take in almost all of what Burton offers hassle-free and at your own leisure
drinks and the fun of Area 52 all thrown in
“If contemplating the fast track options
the extra bang you get for your buck by opting for Screamfest’s ‘RIP’ ultimate ticket is notable.”
Irrespective of whether you are able to indulge to full toothsome extent though
a 2024 visit to Screamfest Burton is another easy recommendation
Firmly ensconced as a staple of any of our Halloween Horror Visits
it has been a devilish joy to see this stalwart of the scare industry go from strength to strength
Once again boasting an enviable ensemble of game
invested scare actors injecting new life and frights into even older mazes
Burton finds itself comfortably nipping at the heels of its competitors as one of the best scare attractions in the UK
With the fantastic new Helcatraz boldly and unabashedly breaking through into new territory for the park
bloody and brilliant for our favourite Halloween must-visits
Burton confidently proves its sterling offering last year was no fluke
With a fantastic new maze venturing boldly into new territory for the park
and the same high standards of scare performers and characterful identity throughout
it’s a bloody brilliant return for one of the UK’s best scare attractions

A landmark heritage building in the centre of Burton-on-Trent is set to reopen as a 2,000-capacity live venue and club.
The Complex Burton, the building formerly known as Robins, The Ritz and Burton Opera House has undergone a £100k renovation since July 2022.
The venue now features the 1,200-cap Complex Arena, one of the Midlands’ first 360 bars Mono, alongside the already existing Lifestyle bar, the Guild and George Street venue.
Existing features of the 157-year-old Grade-II listed building have been preserved including its Art Deco frontage and interior, an original film projector alongside paintings and plasterwork.
The venue has seen the addition of graphics, parquet and demi-gloss epoxy resin flooring, as well as additional dressing room and production facilities, a stage extension, new bar and VIP area, as well as the introduction of a L’Acoustics sound system and LED lighting array in the main Arena space.
The venue will launch on December 21, with the Chapter 1 event headlined by British electronic stars Fabio & Grooverider, as well as DJ Luck and MC Neat, K Klass, Dillinja, and Nicky Blackmarket.
Venue owner and Burton native David Wain spent years building up local businesses before taking on The Complex renovation as a major project.
Wain said: “Being a local lad and watching first-hand the steady decline of nightlife in Burton, has compelled me to do something about it.
“I am very proud of what we have achieved here, a true cultural venue for everyone to enjoy, with all the history The Complex has inside its walls.
“We have carefully and sympathetically kept and restored the venue’s history and listed status, with keeping the art deco detailing throughout.
“We have worked very hard to appeal to all generations, and will carefully construct each and every chapter we launch. There is lots to look forward to and plans for the future ahead.”
Welcoming the news, East Staffordshire Borough Councillor Kim Smith said: “Burton people have some great memories of the historic building formally known by many as ‘the pictures’ or the Ritz, watching all the new films or attending the Saturday morning picture show.
“It now needs to be back on the map – Burton is in need of a multi use large venue, that can not only be used in the daytime, but can also bring some much-needed life back to our town’s nightlife.
“We have some great talent in Burton and The Complex is a fantastic place and platform to get them started on their journey to success.”

Work to resurface Newton Road in Burton-on-Trent will start next week
A major road in Burton will be completely resurfaced in a £600,000 scheme
on the A511 Ashby Road at the south-eastern end of Burton Bridge
will undergo a seven-week overhaul that will see resurfacing of the main junction and the Newton Road/Bearwood Hill junction
cut back vegetation and replace traffic lights and guardrails
The Staffordshire County Council works will be done in three phases starting on 23 July
and will see a combination of road closures
temporary traffic signals and overnight works to minimise disruption
Initial works to Bearwood Hill Road will be carried out under a road closure
with a one-way system operating along Newton Road in the direction from Mill Hill Lane towards Burton
The left-hand filter lane on Burton Bridge will be suspended to traffic turning left onto Newton Road
and traffic will be unable to travel straight on from Stapenhill Road across to Newton Road
crews will be working alongside National Grid who are installing ducts in the area
to minimise disruption and maximise the amount of work they can get done
These works will be carried out under temporary traffic signals and will be in operation 24/7
Added to this the left-hand filter lane on Burton Bridge may need to be closed to suspend traffic turning left onto Newton Road
Burton Bridge will be reduced to one lane in and one lane out of the town
Crews will also be working overnight to reconstruct the carriageway
crews will be finishing off works during phase three
which is scheduled to start on 30 August and last until 6 September
The works are all part of a wider £50 million investment into the county’s roads over three years
Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for strategic highways
“These extensive works are an essential part of improving the road network in Burton
Our crews will be working around the clock and are making great efforts to reduce disruption to residents and motorists as much as possible
and even teaming up with local utility companies to make the absolute most out of the road closures
Letters with further information have been sent to any affected properties in the area
and we want to thank people in advance for their patience while these essential maintenance works are taking place.”

including 18 affected by the flood of February 2020
including £2 million from the National Highways Designated Funds programme
and reduces the risk of flooding to over 4,600 homes and 1,000 businesses
The A38 at Branston and adjacent properties have experienced flooding on several occasions since 2000
An investigation revealed that when the level of the River Trent was high
water got into Severn Trent Water’s foul sewerage system
highway drains and through low ground and eventually flooded properties and the highway
Through the construction of sheet piled walls
water will now be contained in Tatenhill Brook when the River Trent is high
Senior Flood Risk Adviser for the Environment Agency
This latest completed work has been funded from the £30 million set aside to improve the flood defences in the Burton-upon-Trent area
We want to thank all members of the local community for their understanding and patience while these works have taken place
Our team first started construction work in Burton in 2019 and the improved flood defences have already successfully protected properties
which otherwise would have been affected by floods
While these defences should provide reassurance to communities and businesses, no one should have a false sense of security. We strongly urge people to sign up for flood warnings and regularly check flood risk via our website
National Highways Programme Development Manager
We are committed to reducing flooding on our roads and also minimising flood risks to the communities who live alongside them
we are investing in schemes such as this which will improve the flood resilience of our network and reduce the flooding risk to our neighbours
It is extremely rewarding to see the completion of this scheme which will not only protect our roads and people living alongside them for generations to come but in the future will also enhance the waterside habitats enabling wildlife to thrive

The Environment Agency’s £30 million upgrade of Burton-upon-Trent’s flood defences is complete
with the defences already demonstrating their value to the town
The official opening is scheduled this Friday (16 July) in front of Burton Library
senior flood risk adviser for the Environment Agency
We’re delighted to successfully deliver upgraded flood defences for the community of Burton-upon-Trent
which will reduce the risk flooding to 4,500 homes and 1,000 businesses
which total 3.7 kilometres from Branston to Clay Mills
are water tight and were already in action protecting the community from the impacts of Storm Christoph earlier this year
The project follows work carried out between 2005 and 2007 and in all
Burton has some 9 kilometres of upgraded defences
The Environment Agency has also supported East Staffordshire Borough Council in work to improve the areas around the library and leisure centre
The council secured a £3 million grant from Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership to carry out additional public realm enhancements
This work includes a wetland area with a boardwalk and is due to be completed by March 2022
In addition to improving existing defences
the Environment Agency is constructing further defences near Branston Water Park off the A38 after some 18 properties were impacted in the 2020 floods
This work is expected to be completed by next spring 2022
While these defences are a major boost for the town, people still need to know what to do when flooding is expected so we urge people to check their flood risk, sign up for free flood warnings and keep up-to-date with the latest situation: If you’re at risk of flooding
Managing Director of Galliford Try’s environment business
I congratulate the team and all the stakeholders involved for completing this fantastic project
It is source of great pride for us as a team to know that the Burton scheme will help protect homes and businesses and have a real impact on people’s lives
This project will help protect homes and businesses as well as people and livelihoods
Our £3 million allocation from the Local Growth Fund is testament to our unique partnership work with local government
In this case we have worked with East Staffordshire Borough Council to ensure the wetlands area is better connected to Burton town centre and can be enjoyed as a visitor attraction
