Burwell & Exning will head into the new 2025 Onyx League Division One season having shed their ‘new team factor’
After achieving back-to-back promotions in 2022 and 2023
skipper Paul Summerskill set his side the target of surviving at a higher level in 2024
eventually finishing in fifth place with 11 victories from their 22 outings
But this time around Summerskill is well aware that his team will no longer be an unknown quantity
“Considering that we were new to the level we had a really good season,” said the captain
who finished fifth in the Division One run-scoring charts and took more dismissals than any other wicket-keeper last year
“The main target was just to stay up so the fact that we did more than that
Those wins gave us some momentum and it showed we belonged at the level
We dipped a bit in the middle but then we finished unbeaten in the last 10 or 11 weeks
“This year we’ll be looking for more of the same – firstly making sure that we stay in Division One
“Our new team factor has gone and players at our level will work you out
so we’ve got to find a way to work through that
I think the league is going to be even stronger this year so somewhere around mid-table would be nice.”
it has been a relatively quiet winter for Burwell & Exning
Manish Burman has left the club due to a work relocation
while Tom Mangelsen has arrived as this year’s overseas player
Summerskill added: “It’s definitely a good sign that we’ve not had to be too busy
We didn’t want to have a massive turnover of players and we’re not a club that goes out and tries to recruit too much
“We want people that want to play for the club and that’s what we’ve got
It’s a great changing room and the club is in a really good place.”
Burwell & Exning will have home advantage during Saturday’s (19 April) season opener when they welcome Blunham to Exning Park

Burwell Kebab Van has emerged victorious from the British Kebab Awards during what is shaping up to be a special year for owner Sezgin Idriz
It won Kebab Van of the Year at the awards
The annual ceremony, which is now in its 13th year, also includes categories such as Best Takeaway in London, Best Value Restaurant, Best Vegan Kebab, and Chef of the Year.
Sezgin described the win as “unbelievable”, adding: “Hard work pays off, right?”
He notes that the business, which he launched in 2016 and can be found at 21 The Causeway, Burwell, has finished in second place for the past two years.
“Finally this year we got the crown,” says Sezgin, who is helped by his father Nedzhmi and his wife, Emma.
His father had been fighting lung cancer and has just been given the all-clear from Royal Papworth Hospital, while his wife is pregnant with the couple’s second baby.
Sezgin said the main focus for Burwell Kebab Van is on customer service.
“We’ve got lots of people from everywhere, like Downham Market, Ely, Royston, the other side of Cambridge, the other side of Newmarket,” he said.
“We ask them if they have far to go and we wrap the food in aluminium foil. We also wrap the salad separately, to keep it fresh.”
Sezgin, who was born in Bulgaria and grew up in Turkey, revealed that some people have visited the van from as far away as Birmingham and Nottingham, having found out about it online.
He adds that their meat is fresh every day, as are the vegetables, and believes that he was one of the first people in the Cambridge area to sell halloumi.
It’s certainly an intriguing time to be involved in two-wheeled motorsport after Liberty Media moved to acquire MotoGP.
While it will likely take until at least November for the takeover to be approved, it brings extra attention to all forms of motorbike racing around the world.
Within the many sub-sections of two-wheeled racing is supercross, a variation of motocross. The latter takes place on off-road circuits, but the former modernised the format by bringing it to sports stadiums.
Providing greater accessibility for fans helped this variation of the sport to become the premier form of off-road motorbike racing, especially in the US. However, the hierarchy of these series is complicated.
In 2022, the World Supercross Championship (WSX) separated from the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), which sanctions the major US-based AMA Supercross Championship.
The latter series held world championship status until the split, at which point the world championship moniker transferred over to WSX under the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM).
Having lost the world championship title, the AMA and Feld Entertainment, which owns the AMA Supercross Championship, created the SuperMotocross World Championship. This combined the aforementioned supercross series with the AMA Motocross Championship.
Meanwhile, WSX has navigated its fresh start under its new promoters, Australia-based SX Global. It’s been far from smooth sailing, though, as SX Global was sold to an investment group after just one year.
This group, led by Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Juan Sartori, the co-owners of English soccer club Sunderland, has steadied the ship. This became clear in May this year, when the FIM agreed a new ten-year deal with SX Global to continue promoting WSX. Running until 2033, the contract also includes the option of an additional decade.
With solid foundations in place, the series appointed a new chief executive, Tom Burwell, to usher in the new era of supercross.
BlackBook Motorsport sat down with the former director of business development and sponsorship at Formula One to learn more about his plans for the series, how it will cut through in a cluttered market, and his hopes for future growth around the world.
So I met with ownership about eight weeks before I started and the process has very much been one of alignment.
If you look at WSX as a sporting asset, and you look at the platform that is being built by the ownership, it was engaged conversations about opportunity in the future and where we saw this going, both as a sport and as a platform, and then how that fitted into their wider ecosystem.
Ensuring there was full support for a vision for that sport, and it being very much a long-term vision, [that] was important for me. [I’m] appreciative of where we are currently, but ultimately [we’re not] where we want to be and [it’s about] understanding that that’s a journey [to get there] rather than an immediate knock on a door and suddenly it’s fixed and ready to go.
I think we all know that different owners have different reasons for being in the space, so those conversations are very much about alignment in what I wanted to achieve, what I thought was realistic to achieve [in the right] timelines, and the support that would be needed to do so.
[We’re] really fortunate that we’ve got an ownership group that is very supportive of that and really forward thinking on what this opportunity is for supercross in the global space and outside of the US.
I think it’s fair to say Kyril and Juan are exceptionally forward thinking as sports owners. They are methodical in their approach; it’s not spend freely, it’s let’s build long-term structural foundations and plans, and then let’s be innovative with how we speak to consumers and partners and those within the ecosystem.
If you are going to have private ownership, which we’re lucky that we have, it means that you’ve got dynamism in your decision-making processes. Equally, you’ve got to make sure that the private owners have real alignment with me as an operator, otherwise you’re going to run into challenges before you even begin.
So it was actually just two really solid private owners that have got experience. Juan’s obviously heavily involved in Monaco Football Club, so [he’s] really experienced in the football space, looking at other sports acquisitions, and ensuring that alignment piece was the most important.
Kyril Louis-Dreyfus (right) is known for his work with Sunderland, currently competing in English soccer’s Championship
It’s a product which lends itself so well to both digital and at-event experience. In many ways, it’s been under-developed in a lot of the non-live areas especially. The live experience is so visceral that it doesn’t matter whether you’ve never watched a race or understand the rules, you’re going to have a great time.
The idea that it can be [shown] in a two-hour broadcast window, that’s a three-hour window as a live experience, and we know that’s a real sweet spot for engagement for fans, both as a TV product and a live product.
And then there’s this digital-first Gen Z space, which lends itself to hero moments. Those hero moments are not necessarily just overtakes, it’s what’s happening in the air, what’s happening on the jumps.
There’s a relentless nature to that that can be clipped up and repackaged and put out in a digital-first consumption space. I don’t think [WSX] has been truly exploited, so my excitement around it was that’s where I think we can be.
We haven’t had the opportunity to invest and develop that platform and that product. [WSX] has traditionally been looked at very much like a disparate group of events, rather than a true global platform that looked at it global first, zooming into local – rather than local first, zooming out to global.
If we’re going to be successful in what we’re doing, and in line with the ownership’s vision, we have to do exactly what we say we’re going to do. In 2024, we’ve got four races across three countries: we need to deliver those at a world-class standard, with world-class rider quality competing for a world championship.
We’ve got a small window to do that but that’s almost non-negotiable. If we don’t deliver that in 2024, I think it’s very hard to sell against that for 2025 and, ultimately, you go into a point of flux and you’re just going to say the same things.
The challenge to us in the team is that is the non-negotiable as we go from where we are today to absolute world-class delivery across those venues, with those riders, with those teams, because we don’t have the manufacturer support in the way that supercross does in America.
To do that, we need to build the platform that means that manufacturers and stakeholders want to come and engage with [us]. We really just need to do exactly what we say we’ll do, which is deliver world-class events.
The challenges [that follow] are much easier conversations and opportunities because we have an evidence-based approach for why people should come and get involved.

Formula One is in an incredibly fortunate situation that it’s able to communicate with prospective new hosts and owners around the world in a really immediate fashion
Nobody doesn’t know what Formula One is
I think when WSX goes to market and into certain new audiences
and certainly when it begins to engage with governments and cities and potential promoters
we’ve got to do more work on who we are and what we are and how that aligns with certain race markets
Clearly it would not be fair to make direct comparisons because the reality of the audience the two are drawing is very different
and WSX is much more of a challenger sport
but we’re also then taking the financial risk to sell tickets ourselves
We’ve got to be much more zoomed into the local market and the legacy impact that we have in the local market
knowing that we will return a year later with risk again
Other rights holders are obviously much more at the global level and they can be much more of a moving circus
Dorna didn’t develop MotoGP into the asset that it is for Liberty’s investment overnight
Infront [Moto Racing’s] development of MXGP [Motocross World Championship] has taken a long period of time so that they’re now racing in 20 markets around the world and really successful with it
whether that’s with ownership or the licence with FIM
whilst we’ve got pressure to make sure we’re delivering world-class events and we have a [profit and loss] that we’re accountable to
you’ve got to look at that as a long-term [plan]
This is with regards to building value in a sport and growing fans
and how those audiences might come in at certain ages and at what point you’re able to monetise them
Those things don’t happen in [a few] years
those things happen in [as much as] ten years
To have the security of where we are with the FIM licence is really important
because we can then go on that journey with FIM and our promoters and our cities around the world
[It also helps us to] engage cities on mid-term length deals knowing that they’ve got the comfort that that’s where our commitment is to the sport
We’ve got to conservatively grow year-on-year
So let’s say we’re four races this year
I think we should be six races next year and then we can continue to grow conservatively in the markets that we are strategically highlighting
We need to invest in our global platform so that it’s truly a global sport that we’re talking about
We have a responsibility as the platform itself that all those that come into our ecosystem are given value
Whether that’s fan-first in our product
whether that’s manufacturers engaging with and supporting the teams
Success looks like – I’m reticent to say an arbitrary number – but a number that is two times from where we are now
So let’s say around ten races around the world and a global platform which is very clear [about] what is WSX
It’s recognition that our world champion is recognised across the sport as the world champion in supercross
I think that is a really important part of who we are and getting that cut-through across the sport
I think global partners that have come on that journey as well
if we’ve been successful at building that platform and taking it to new audiences
then instead of partnerships being local-first and truly endemic
we’ll be in a non-endemic space with partners that value our global platform

A village church is facing an initial insurance bill of £1,000 after vandals broke in and wrecked its Christmas tree festival
Just a few hours after the Sunday communion service at St Mary’s Church in Burwell was over and the festival had welcomed visitors to admire the many displays created by a number of the village’s different groups
the 15th century church was broken into and serious damage caused
A leaded window was smashed scattering glass all over an area used by children during services
decorated trees were thrown on to the floor and a lectionary containing Bible readings for the church service was torn
“Last week we spent a lovely afternoon with local children decorating the big Christmas tree,” said the Rev Canon Eleanor Williams
“and it was so very sad to see that it had been pulled over.”
She said the church had had to remain closed to give time for the damage to be fully assessed
but it was hoped to reopen yesterday for the 10.30am service and then to remain open until 4pm daily for visitors to look round the Christmas Tree Festival exhibits which will be on display until Christmas
Tonight’s concert by professional harpist and singer Lucy Bunce will go ahead as planned and Mrs Williams said she hoped as many people as possible would support the event which starts at 7.30pm
“We will know later on if some of the damage caused will be covered by our insurance
but one way people could support us is by coming along this Thursday evening,” she said
The church had since been informed it would have to pay the first £1,000 of any claim
Tickets for the concert are £10 and can either be purchased on the door
or at Burwell Post Office or CentrePeace in The Causeway
including mulled wine will also be available from 7pm
when visitors can also view the Christmas Tree Festival
If anyone has any information about the break-in or CCTV footage

An old village church is set to be turned into a modern home as developers say they will “preserve and invigorate” the empty building
Plans have been approved by East Cambridgeshire District Council to convert the former St Andrew’s Church in North Street
The church closed in the 1980s with the building then being used as an office until around five years ago
Permission was given back in 2019 for the building to be turned into a home
has put forward detailed plans for what the old church would look like as a home
The inside of the building is due to be split into two floors with an open plan living area on the first floor and a number of individual rooms on the ground floor
The developer said: “[These plans] will invigorate the building and ensure its ongoing preservation by creating a high-quality dwelling in the village.”
Council planning officers agreed that the plans would be a good way to bring the building back into use and to preserve it for the future
They said: “The building has now sat vacant for five years
It is considered that although granted change of use to offices in 1990
given its former use as a church and location in a largely residential area
while it did operate as a church and then an office for a number of years
which does not give much scope for off street parking
“The building is considered to be a heritage asset and has been nominated for inclusion on the Cambridge Local Heritage List Project
“The building is not going to be used as a church and there appears there is no interest in the building being used commercially
prior approval has previously been granted for a change of use to residential
“The current application would allow the building to be in use again
thus helping to prevent deterioration of the building over time if it sits empty and would be a less intensive use in a residential area than either of the former uses.”

Just two months before former American University President Sylvia Burwell’s departure, the student government voted to declare no confidence in Burwell over a “series of decisions that have consistently undermined student advocacy and failed to transparently engage with student and faculty concerns.” Less than three months into his presidency
President Jonathan Alger has already begun repeating the previous president’s mistakes
namely with his updates to AU’s free expression policies.
aware that the student body does not support tightening free expression rules — yet they chose to continue Burwell’s mistakes
materials may only be posted on designated bulletin boards if approved by the University
if SJP is stripped of its position as a registered student organization by the university administration
Apart from this specific issue of suppression
Alger’s new policies also further strip AU students of their ability to protest freely
You can absolutely protest — in the box that the university has provided for you
You can post materials on designated bulletin boards only if the university approves them
You can participate in chalking where the university has predetermined you can
The student body has made its disdain for restrictions on freedom of expression abundantly clear through the student government vote last semester, where, in a student-wide vote, 77 percent of students agreed the policy restricting poster hanging should be rescinded.
want Alger to succeed — we are absolutely rooting for him
not participating in and changing the status quo of misled policies of the Burwell administration
A university truly committed to a “Change Can’t Wait” initiative ought to encourage
how its students choose to affect that change

Burwell & Exning (274-8) closed the gap on the Onyx League Division One’s top three sides with a 54-run victory at second-placed Histon (220) at the weekend
captain Paul Summerskill was Burwell & Exning’s main contributor of runs with a top score of 81 from 83 deliveries
Summerskill’s knock included eight fours and one six
while Dylan Hardy (61) and Nic Huckle (40) also provided useful totals before the 50-over limit was reached
Ben Leach (2-29) and Toby Purton (2-27) were the leading wicket takers for Histon
openers Mitchell (32) and Alfie Dixon (22) got the hosts off to a solid start before Ed Hyde – batting at number three – top scored with a patient 64
that was the end of the significant scoring for Histon
who ended up falling well short of their target
Manish Burman (3-21) and Ben Kelly (3-43) took three wickets apiece for Burwell & Exning
while Edward Manning (2-37) snared a couple
Histon will sign off for the 2024 season with a trip to mid-table Eaton Socon on Saturday (14 September)
while Burwell & Exning finish on the same day with a clash away at Sawston & Babraham II
Cambridge St Giles (230-5) chalked up a 73-run victory from their trip to Old Leysians (157) on Saturday
Having been inserted into bat by their hosts
St Giles started positively through openers James Gillespie (39) and Kunal Dabas (20)
The departure of those two batsmen then saw Zahar Hussain (67) and Vansh Bajaj (48 not out) come to the crease
and the pair combined to put on a total that proved to be beyond their opponents
The Old Leysians’ reply struggled for any significant momentum throughout their innings
with three of the batting line-up being dismissed for ducks
Bajaj (4-30) spearheaded St Giles’ charge towards victory with the ball alongside figures of 3-26 from Charles Bell
Fifth-placed St Giles will finish the season on Saturday (14 September) with the visit of Foxton Granta
while eighth-placed Old Leysians hit the road to take on Saffron Walden II
Foxton Granta (117) were beaten by two wickets during last weekend’s low-scoring affair at Ramsey (120-8)
Openers Adam Webster (41) and Douglas Rice (12) were the only batsmen to score double figures during an afternoon to forget for Foxton Granta’s batting line-up
the away side still went close to pulling off an unlikely victory thanks to some accurate bowling from captain Lewys Hill (3-21)
who still have two games remaining this term
find themselves sitting third in the league table

The Green family morally object to the HHS Mandate and seek to operate their businesses Hobby Lobby and Mardel Christian bookstores according to their faith
David and Barbara Green and their adult children are devout Christians who seek to honor God by running their family business “in a manner consistent with Biblical principles.” But the government’s HHS Mandate required the Greens to provide insurance coverage for drugs and services
contrary to the family’s religious beliefs—or pay millions of dollars in fines
the Green family went to court to defend their rights and won on June 30
Supreme Court granted a landmark victory for religious liberty in favor of the Greens and their family business
A family seeking the American Dream
David and Barbara Green founded Hobby Lobby in a garage
it has been a family business—David worked an extra job to support his family
and their children glued picture frames at the kitchen table in exchange for money to buy baseball cards
Hobby Lobby has since grown from one 300-square-foot store to more than 700 stores across the country
becoming one of the nation’s leading arts and crafts retailers
Their success story is a true example of the American dream
The Greens are devout Christians who seek to honor God by “operating their company in a manner consistent with Biblical principles.” All stores are closed on Sundays and only operate 66 hours per week to allow employees to spend evenings and Sundays with their families
The Greens start all full-time hourly workers at more than double the federal minimum wage because they believe in treating people well
A mandate that violates the Green family’s faith
the government’s HHS Mandate required the Greens to provide insurance coverage for potentially life-terminating drugs and devices
contrary to the family’s religious convictions—or pay millions of dollars in fines to the IRS
The Green family has no moral objection to 16 of 20 contraceptives required in the mandate
and Hobby Lobby has continued its longstanding practice of covering these drugs and services for their employees
the Greens could not provide or pay for four drugs and devices like the morning-after pill and the week-after pill
Covering these services would violate their deeply held religious belief that life begins at the moment of conception
Becket leads the Green family to a Supreme Court victory
The Green family respects the rights of all Americans
But they believed that Hobby Lobby could not stay true to its mission while providing services that go against their beliefs
All they asked was that the government allow them to continue running their family business—providing quality jobs for the employees and quality products for their customers—according to their faith
With the help of Becket, the Green family went to court to defend their rights and won, proving you don’t leave your religion at the door when you open a family business. After a two-year legal battle, on June 30, 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court granted a landmark victory for religious liberty
ruling 5-4 in favor of David and Barbara Green and their family business

The hosts headed into the contest at Mingay Park having lost their last four league matches in a row – a sequence that stretched back to 4 May
a commanding display with the bat and in the field allowed Burwell & Exning to collect the maximum 25 points against Blunham which leaves them seventh in the table
The tone for the contest was set by Burwell & Exning’s opening batsmen Simon Donald (81) and Nick Jones (57)
And that was followed by another century partnership from Dylan Hardy (74 not out) and Charlie Sorensen (52) to put the home side in the position were they could declare after 54 overs
It was a target that Blunham never threatened to challenge as Manish Burman (3-27)
Edward Manning (3-37) and Nic Huckle (3-49) all claimed three wickets apiece
Burwell & Exning will now aim to put back-to-back triumphs on the board on Saturday (16 June) when they head to Bedfordshire to face ninth-placed Southill Park
Cambridge St Giles (127-6) tightened their grip on fourth spot in the Division One standings with Saturday’s four-wicket home win over Southill Park (123)
Chris Germon (6-29) spearheaded St Giles’ charge with the ball in hand as they bowled out their visitors in 35.5 overs
The hosts also lost a number of wickets during their relatively small run chase
but they eventually reached the target thanks to an unbeaten knock of 34 runs from 33 deliveries by all-rounder Aatish Kean Maharaj
who have now racked up three straight victories
will aim to continue their positive form on Saturday (16 June) when they travel to face fifth-placed Eaton Socon
Histon (185-6) dug in to record a draw from their Division One trip to Foxton Granta (237-7)
In the battle of second playing host to third
a number of Foxton Granta batsmen contributed decent scores to push their side beyond the 200-run mark
despite having their visitors 103-6 in reply
the home side were unable to take any further wickets and they had to settle for a return of 14 points while Histon nabbed eight
Johnny Atkinson (50) top scored for Foxton Granta with a half century alongside knocks of 49 and 43 from Harry Hopwood and Douglas Rice respectively
Histon skipper Ben Leach caught the eye with figures of 3-58 from his 13 overs
Histon then initially lost wickets at regular intervals as the Foxton Granta bowling attack shared the wickets around
But they were unable to break the defence of the away side’s overseas player Dan Cummins
who batted for almost three hours for his unbeaten score of 77 from 128 deliveries
who have seen the gap to table-topping Ramsey swell to 29 points
will be on their travels on Saturday (16 June) when they travel to face eighth-placed Blunham
will look to halt a sequence of back-to-back draws during their home encounter with basement outfit Old Leysians
And 24 hours on from their league draw with Histon
Foxton Granta (156-3) triumphed by seven wickets over Barney & Fulmodeston (155) in the regional final of the Voneus National Village Cup
Foxton Granta were one step away from a Lord’s final two seasons ago in the competition when they were beaten in the semi-finals
But they remain on course to reach the home of English cricket in 2024 after the weekend’s routine win against their visitors from Norfolk
After losing the toss to his opposite number
Foxton Granta skipper Lewys Hill shone with the ball in hand as he recorded figures of 4-33 alongside Ravi Mehendra’s 3-32
And the home side chased down their target in two balls shy of 35 overs thanks to knocks from Johnny Atkinson (43 not out)
Adam Webster (40) and Harry Hopwood (38 not out)
Hill’s side will have home advantage again in the fifth round of the tournament (last 32) when they take on the winners of the Kent section – Chestfield – on 23 June
Chestfield beat last year’s runners-up Leeds & Broomfield in the previous round
Captain Lewys Hill produced the goods with bat and ball to help Foxton Granta (271-6) overcome Blunham (226-9) by 45 runs on Saturday
Hill came to the crease after 23 overs with his side on a score of 101-5
Foxton Granta’s total had moved on to 263 runs as Hill smashed a run-a-ball 90 alongside an unbeaten half century from wicketkeeper Ash Clark (51 not out)
All-rounder Hill then followed up his exploits with the bat by recording bowling figures of 2-18 to help keep the visitors at bay
Sam Beer (2-46) and Vishrut Pisupait (2-48) also snared a couple of wickets
while Richard Kaufman (1-11) and Ravi Mahendra (1-59) both got in on the act
The victory has kept Foxton Granta sitting third in the Onyx League Division One standings
11 points adrift of Histon in second position and 52 behind table-topping Ramsey
And the leaders will be Foxton Granta’s next opposition at Cricketfield Lane on Saturday (7 September)
Burwell & Exning (95-3) shared the wickets around on their way to recording a seven-wicket home victory over Southill Park (92)
Only two members of the visitors’ line-up scored double figures after they won the toss and opted to bat first
Joshua Vowden (3-16) and Nic Huckle (3-20) both took three wickets apiece for Burwell & Exning alongside further contributions from Clinton Cornwell (2-25) and Edward Manning (1-25)
the hosts lost three wickets for just four runs during a mini collapse
but Dylan Hardy (20 not out) and captain Paul Summerskill (24 not out) came to the crease and got their side over the winning line midway through the 20th over
who have moved up to fourth position in the Division One standings
will travel to face second-placed Histon on Saturday (7 September)
Histon (123) will go into that contest after a poor batting display them suffer a 70-run defeat away at Saffron Walden II (193) on Saturday
visiting Histon took wickets throughout the Walden innings
Jake Allcock (2-30) and Henry Wilson (2-37) all took two wickets apiece
but it was the performance of Keelan Mendel (72) that pushed the home side towards the 200-run mark
And it was a target that proved to be way beyond Histon
who lost opener Tom Newman for a duck and never recovered from that point
Allcock (28) and Freddie Meldal (22) were the only two batsmen to contribute notable totals
with three being dismissed without troubling the scoreboard and four more providing single-figure scores
Histon have remained second in the Division One standings with a 41-point gap to leaders Ramsey
Old Leysians (221-6) put further daylight between themselves and the relegation zone after Saturday’s four-wicket win over Sawston & Babraham II (220)
Having opted to field after winning the toss
it was Adam Newman that caught the eye with the ball for Old Lesyians thanks to his figures of 3-44
while there was also two wickets apiece for Andrew Bramley
And it was Bramley that shone during the run chase with his top knock of 58 runs from 62 deliveries
who are 39 points above the bottom two places
will welcome Cambridge St Giles to The Leys School on Saturday (7 September)
The aforementioned St Giles (198-9) came up short by five wickets during their recent trip to Wisbech Town (200-5)
Martin Heginbotham’s 40 not out and Chris Germon’s bowling figures of 2-37 were the stand-out performances for St Giles during their defeat
the hosts’ charge to victory was spearheaded by the display of wicketkeeper Josh Bowers
who was involved in two wickets alongside his top score of 80 runs
The defeat saw St Giles drop to fifth position in the league table with two matches remaining
Niall Chamberlain was the star turn at Squared Circle Boxing Academy’s first ever home show on 25 May
which featured a number of skills and competitive bouts
that caught the eye with a dominant display against his opponent from St Osyth Boxing Gym
The ‘Burwell Bomber’ used his superior reach to good effect
peppering the visiting fighter with some well-timed jabs before he unleashed a string of combinations to win via a stoppage
Squared Circle’s Ethan Hubberd racked up a third straight victory over his opponent from Ashford
There was also a first win for the club’s Louis Hadley
Up against a fighter from New Saints Boxing Club
Hadley put a run of back-to-back defeats behind him to come out on top
Harvey Smith and Ruben Recio all suffered narrow defeats
while Lilly Yeates showed her undoubted potential during her first ever skills outing
Yeates – like all of the fighters – collected her trophy from European champion Jordan Gill

Sherie Lee Burwell Stuecher was born in Decatur
1946 to Helen Keller and Thornton Chase Burwell
she was the last of the six to pass on from this world
2024 to be reunited with her husband of 45 years
She is survived by her three loving daughters
Barbara ‘Jodi’ Fox and Alisyn Stuecher-Dulaney and four grandchildren
Kristyn and Jennifer McCabe as well as numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family members.
Sherie moved with her family to Clearwater
FL while in grade school and later graduated from Clearwater High School.
She met David at the Presbyterian church that she and her family attended
Even though their relationship was no fairytale; far from love at first sight and without a storybook wedding
they fell in love and loved each other deeply and eternally
they both shared a thirst for knowledge and love of literature
They also both loved to travel and explore the natural world
taking trips and spending vacations in wonderful
Serving as both navigator and trip entertainment director
Sherie would play travel games and educate her children about the historical sites
Sherie worked as an Executive Administrative Assistant for Flower’s Foods and also raised and bred Irish setters
she and David decided to take a leap of faith and trust that God would provide
packed everything in a Uhaul and moved to the Asheville
she became an Executive Administrative Assistant at Montreat Conference Center in Montreat
NC where she remained until she received an Associate degree in Travel & Tourism from Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College and began working as a travel agent for Blue Ridge Travel Agency.
they sold their home and moved to Swannanoa
There they lived amongst the animals and the birds with several bird feeders
they enjoyed their mountain scenery and breathtaking views.
After David suffered a major heart attack and subsequent stroke
Sherie left her job at the travel agency and went to work for Cooper-Bussman
she worked as a branch office administrator for Edward Jones Investments until her retirement
she became a team member of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in the Training Center at The Cove in Asheville
she was underutilized and underappreciated
A working mom from 9-5 who ‘brought home the bacon and fried it up in a pan’
she always strove to provide a home full of love and abundant blessings
Instilling her daughters with her independent nature
encouraging them to pursue whatever interests and desires motivated them
she expressed this through her love of knitting and crochet
She blessed others with blankets as presents for weddings and to celebrate the birth of babies
She also donated blankets and hats to the maternity ward at the hospital and made lap blankets for members of Groce United Methodist Church.
A bit of an enigma and a conundrum all rolled up into one
Fiercely loyal and protective of those she loved
not afraid to stand her ground and be defiant when challenged
most mundane parts of life fun and exciting
she was not afraid to be silly and enjoy life
regardless of what others might say or what opinions might be expressed.
She was truly loved and will be deeply missed by friends and family alike
we are glad that she is free from the scourge of dementia and the torture of being a highly intelligent and fiercely independent individual trapped inside a brain that betrayed her
We are glad that she will now be forever young and beautiful and is now reunited with David in heaven.
