Given the unstoppable momentum of mirrorless development, this wouldn’t be surprising… except it isn’t true. A quick visit to Nikon USA tells a different story: the D6 is still listed and demanding its full $6,500 USD price tag That’s right—Nikon’s ultimate DSLR is still being sold brand-new in 2025 and Nikon hasn’t issued a single word about discontinuing it That’s a bold stance in a world seemingly bent on rendering DSLRs obsolete This unexpected reversal signals renewed demand or nostalgia-fueled buying among elite photographers who still swear by DSLR reliability So Canon has walked away from DSLR development—but the 1DX Mark III hasn’t faded away The Nikon D6 was officially launched for retail back in 2020 (read the launch article here) The D6 was clearly intended as a DSLR fortress—unshakable in speed the D6 was (and still is) a workhorse built for real-world battlefields And what’s fascinating is that Nikon continues to support and sell the D6 as if the mirrorless war never happened Another surprising twist in this saga? The Nikon D6—this mechanical titan of the DSLR world—costs more than its mirrorless twin, the Nikon Z9. While both cameras are considered flagships in their respective categories, recent developments have made this price gap hard to ignore. As covered in this article likely in anticipation of a Z9 Mark II announcement This means that a brand-new Z9 now sells for well under $5,500 USD—a full $1,000+ less than the D6 This price discrepancy is both fascinating and revealing The Z9 features a stacked full-frame sensor lacks many of the modern innovations mirrorless cameras now deliver as standard So why is the older DSLR still priced like royalty and perhaps Nikon’s intention to maintain a premium positioning for its last DSLR giant For many photojournalists and action shooters the D6 still represents the peak of reliability—a camera built like a tank for situations where failure is not an option the fact remains: the D6 costs more than the Z9 and that alone tells a bigger story about Nikon’s transitional era DSLR holdouts are not just surviving—they’re commanding a premium Here’s where things get even more interesting. Even with Canon’s new mirrorless darling on the market, the 1DX Mark III still carries a higher price than the R1 That’s not just surprising—it’s illuminating Why is a DSLR from 2020 holding or exceeding the value of a 2024 mirrorless flagship packed with next-gen AI Many professionals still swear by DSLR ergonomics and the no-nonsense nature of DSLRs under pressure There’s a raw mechanical dependability that mirrorless That might explain why Nikon isn’t rushing to shut the D6 down—and why it still retails at full price With Canon fully committed to the mirrorless future Instead of being late to the mirrorless game Nikon might actually be the last DSLR defender While the high-end mirrorless market becomes saturated and aggressively competitive Nikon can quietly serve professionals who still demand DSLR systems for existing Nikon DSLR users with F-mount glass and D5/D4 systems the D6 remains a seamless upgrade—one that doesn’t force a lens overhaul or a change in shooting muscle memory And maybe that’s the real story: DSLRs are not dead They’re for those who know what they want—and are willing to pay for it Mirrorless offers undeniable advantages in terms of technology But Nikon’s continued support of the D6 suggests that death has been exaggerated graceful retirement—with the D6 enjoying a particularly fine bottle of wine on the porch but Nikon isn’t surrendering its DSLR legacy just yet Do you think Nikon is right to keep the D6 alive Are DSLRs now collectible tools for elite creators—or should we move on entirely YMCinema is a premier online publication with a hat-trick in the crucial clash against Marlow Fast-forward 15 years and today it was Ed Upson's name that will go down in club folklore after he returned the Blues back to that level with a stoppage-time winner in the 1-0 Isthmian League North Division play-off final victory against Brightlingsea Regent at the Getaway Cars Stadium As is often the case in games of such magnitude Neither side was prepared to give the other an inch and consequently it was a relatively comfortable opening 45 minutes for both goalkeepers In the 22nd minute the Brightlingsea defence backed off Bury midfielder Ryan Jolland who drove into the box with intent before sending a low cross that Ethan Mayhew slid in to convert only for Brightlingsea goalkeeper Lewis Greene to make the block which quickly came to a halt when referee Craig Charles deemed that Greene had been fouled Brightlingsea came closest to breaking the deadlock during the first half – and it was their livewire Fletcher Hubbard that was heavily involved The number 10 saw his shot from distance glanced on by team-mate Michael Okafor who saw his effort drift no more than a yard wide of Charlie Beckwith's left-hand post As the half drew towards a close Upson was not too far off target with an audacious effort from just inside the Brightlingsea half that had Greene back-pedalling while moments before the whistle the home side's wing-back Max Maughn was left perplexed after he was booked for simulation after going down under a challenge from Jake Clowsley inside the box The tension remained present after the restart although there was at least a little more attacking action at both ends Bury's leading marksman Cemal Ramadan twice went close with very different efforts In the 62nd minute his intended cross from wide on the left forced a back-pedalling Greene to tip the ball over at the back post while nine minutes later his hooked shot from Mikey Davis' inswinging corner was cleared off the line by Fin Adams That was the start of a busy couple of minutes for the Brightlingsea substitute who in his side's next attack called Beckwith into action with a left-footed shot from 25 yards out Another of the away side's replacements – Teddy Collis – had a good opportunity to end the stalemate with 10 minutes remaining but he volleyed well over the crossbar from around the penalty spot And as clock ticked into stoppage time it appeared that everyone had accepted extra-time as inevitably Maughn collected a poor clearance from Adam Bailey-Dennis drove forward and then squared a pass for the midfielder who bent a left-footed shot into the top corner The nerves then ramped up for the five remaining minutes of time added on but Bury held out and the final whistle was greeted by scenes of wild celebrations as supporters poured on to the pitch with its final destination yet to be determined And with the nuclear sector showing signs of undergoing a renaissance—as countries look to decarbonize energy production and with the tech sector seeking ways to power its electricity-hungry AI systems—the pressure for nuclear-waste disposal is likely to grow But such facilities have to be built from scratch which has dug the underground space needed for a repository a Finnish company set up by two of the country’s nuclear operators in 1995 to find a way of permanently storing spent nuclear fuel Storage of spent fuel involves placing spent fuel rods inside copper canisters which in turn have to be inserted into slots dug into the granite walls of the subterranean repository plastic clay that insulates the containers and acts as a buffer against minor movements in the bedrock were sealed in a special aboveground facility before being transported underground and stored along a 70-meter-long subterranean tunnel to provide an initial proof of concept for Onkalo’s storage process The completion of this dummy run puts Finland in the lead in the race to build the world’s first operational deep geological repository Onkalo’s construction has so far cost €900 million while an estimated €4 billion more is needed to complete the project Breaking ground here followed decades of research to find the best location for the repository and years waiting for permits and approvals There are some who still don’t believe the project will happen and others who hope it won’t Some locals have been hostile to the project unhappy with the prospect of nuclear waste being stored nearby and perplexed at how easily Posiva Oy was able to get permits for the repository Researchers have also expressed concerns about potential corrosion of storage containers “More work is needed to define […] the nature and chemistry of the surface films that develop on copper surfaces in repository conditions,” the paper says While Posiva Oy looks like it may have the first functioning repository Neighbouring Sweden is also preparing to start work on its own repository which is intended to contain up to 12,000 metric tons of Swedish spent nuclear fuel It is expected to extend over 60 kilometers of tunnel once it is finished It is a major work that has been on the drawing table for 40 years and obtained its necessary environmental permits for construction only a few months ago Construction could start within the next decade and would continue until the 2080s with this repository’s underground space gradually extending—provided an appeal made by the Office for Nuclear Waste Review Concerns about the Swedish project are the same as with the Finnish one: danger of corrosion of the copper canisters possibly resulting in the release of radioactive elements into the groundwater Canada is also planning to build a storage facility but the path forward appears relatively free of obstacles—at least there are no apparent legal ones the relevant bodies and citizens have selected a host site within the Township of Ignace part of the indigenous community the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation Both the consideration to the potential impact of climate change on the aboveground structures It has taken Switzerland’s national radioactive-waste-disposal cooperative 14 years to decide where to locate its storage facility It has chosen to build its repository north of Zurich because it is an area particularly rich in very compact opaline clay which is perfect for acting as a long-term container for radioactive materials (Finland’s site is also rich in this material.) Final approval is expected around 2030 and the repository should start to operate by 2060 Italy is considering 51 sites that could potentially be suitable to host a repository for nuclear waste largest electric vehicle manufacturer, writes Anthony Cuthbertson A new charging technology could now prove catastrophic for Elon Musk’s car company the Tesla boss had been tickled by a question suggesting that the Chinese automaker BYD was a rival “Why are you laughing?” the interviewer asked to which Musk replied: “Have you seen their car I don’t think they have a great product.” Tesla had just gone public with a multibillion-dollar valuation which would go on to become the world’s best-selling electric car BYD was struggling with declining sales in China and making headlines abroad for ripping off the designs of other cars But one advantage BYD did have was its experience in battery development the Shenzhen-based company turned its focus to cars in 2003 – the same year Tesla was founded – with the intention of transforming the auto industry with battery-powered cars that could compete with fuel-powered vehicles This month, BYD achieved what some industry experts claim is the “holy grail” for electric vehicles: a battery that can fully charge in the same time it takes to fill up a petrol tank The Super E-Platform offers a range of up to 400 kilometres (249 miles) from just five minutes of charging thanks to 1,000 kilowatt charge speeds Most Tesla Supercharger stations have an output of 250kW or less “The new charging performance blows the competition out the water,” Ryan Fisher head of charging infrastructure research at BloombergNEF (BNEF) “It’s three to four times the charging power Tesla's can consume and the vehicles will be similarly priced in China as the Model Y.” BYD said mass production of the new technology would “completely solve users’ range anxiety when travelling” with plans to introduce the “flash-charge” battery in its Han L and Tang L models in China as early as next month The news comes during a period of unprecedented decline for Tesla The company’s valuation has dropped by more than half since December and it is about to record its ninth consecutive week of falling share prices BYD has played a considerable part in this downfall having overtaken Tesla last year as the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer – a position Musk’s company held since 2019 BYD’s massive market share in China has also infringed on Tesla’s with the US company seeing its Chinese shipments fall by 49 per cent year-on-year in February despite demand for electric vehicles sky rocketing both as a result of increased competition and the actions of its CEO There have been protests at Tesla showrooms and charging stations across the UK, Europe and US, as well as acts of arson and vandalism taking direct aim at Musk Previously-loyal customers have buckled to calls for a boycott and switched to other automakers Figures from market researcher Dataforce show that Tesla registrations dropped 44 per cent in February following a decline of 45 per cent in January as there are in most of the world – if you’ve been on a London bus in the last decade there’s a chance that it was built by BYD – but the company is yet to repeat the success it has reached in its domestic market when it comes to cars BYD may also face similar issues to other Chinese tech giants like Huawei and ZTE when breaking into foreign markets with more than a dozen countries around the world restricting or banning their products over national security concerns But if such fears arise surrounding internet-connected electric cars then Tesla may find itself caught up alongside BYD due to Musk’s control of the company BYD is yet to announce when its new ultra-fast changing system will be available outside of China though industry experts say that their arrival could happen quickly “In the UK Tesla has been building its supercharger network for years But BYD's new chargers will incorporate battery storage which means they will require less grid connection to achieve such high power charging,” said BNEF’s charging infrastructure researcher Fisher “This could also enable the infrastructure to be rolled-out quicker if they do bring the car to the UK." BYD is already seeing a surge in sales in Europe – new car registrations were up by nearly 700 per cent in the UK last year – which could see the company take advantage of its industry-leading batteries with a push into markets previously led by Tesla Elon Musk’s company is now not only losing the brand battle And the scale of the battery breakthrough means BYD is not just taking on Tesla but the decades-long dominance of combustion engine vehicles This actually fits with Musk’s original aim for Tesla which he said in 2013 was to “accelerate the advent of sustainable transport” More aboutTeslaElon MuskJoin our commenting forumJoin thought-provoking conversations, follow other Independent readers and see their replies Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker The company’s plan would target areas at higher risk of wildfires, with about 130 circuit miles of underground distribution lines being placed in high-fire-risk areas. “SCE’s initial rebuilding plan will underground electrical distribution infrastructure where practical and make the most of breakthrough technologies to reduce wildfire risk,” said Pedro Pizarro, CEO of Edison International, SCE’s parent company. The project is expected to cost at least $860 million and could take years to complete, but officials said the plan would reduce the risk of wildfires in the area as well as the need for emergency power shutdowns during extreme weather events. “SCE will build back a resilient, reliable grid for our customers,” said Southern California Edison CEO Steven Powell. California Southern California Edison changed how crews ground idle transmission towers just days after the Eaton fire the underground lines would account for about half of the city’s distribution lines “It’s pretty significant,” Pizarro said in an interview Edison’s plan comes after Gov. Gavin Newsom in March suspended key environmental laws for utility companies to rebuild infrastructure that was damaged and destroyed during the fires The order eliminated the need for companies to comply with the California Environmental Quality Act and the California Coastal Act and it encouraged utilities to build underground equipment where possible Pizarro said the order helped Southern California Edison develop the plan for the underground lines speeding the pathway to get the work underway “Those are areas that have been pretty significantly destroyed and our hearts are broken for them,” he said Edison’s preliminary draft calls for a total of 153 circuit miles to be installed underground In Altadena, about 40 circuit miles of power line would be replaced underground in neighborhoods that have been determined to be high-fire-risk areas. Another 23 circuit miles would be installed in neighboring areas. In Malibu, 90 circuit miles would be constructed in the city. Edison also is reviewing adding another 19 miles to the project in Altadena. In all, the project is expected to cost somewhere between $860 million and $925 million. Some of the areas could be completed within months, but others could take years. Pizarro said much of it depends on the community’s rebuilding plans, the needs that arise as reconstruction projects get underway, and the permitting process. “We’re working closely with state and county leaders and the communities of Altadena and Malibu to rebuild wildfire-impacted area stronger than ever,” Pizarro said. The plan is a significant project to Edison, which was already requesting approval for projects to place about 600 miles of lines underground by 2028. Currently, the company has about 17,000 miles of distribution circuits in high fire risk areas, and about 7,000 miles of those are underground. The plan was drafted after more than 50 meetings with community members, and will include upgrades to the grid design in anticipation of increasing demand. “There’s a lot of interest in the community to do underground lines,” Pizarro said. Lines that are not placed underground will be hardened and covered with insulation. Climate & Environment Cal Fire added at least 2.8 million Californians to fire hazard zones. Here’s how to check which zone you’re in and what that means. Although the cost of the plan could near a billion dollars, officials said SCE was looking to work with local, state and federal officials to find ways to fund the project so that it doesn’t translate to increased rates. “This is a lot of cost to the customer, so we’re looking at either federal, state or philanthropic options to lower the cost,” Pizarro said. The company also is looking for ways to fund other direct costs for customers, he said. For example, connecting homes to the grid can cost the individual customer $8,000 to $10,000, he said. “We really want to find a way to avoid that being a cost that these communities have to pick up,” he said. Some of those costs might be diverted through grants and other projects with state or local officials, he said. The current plan would only include distribution lines, which are the electrical wires that carry electricity from the grid into homes and businesses. Transmission lines, which carry a larger amount of electricity through regions, are not included in the plan. Although speculation about what sparked the Eaton fire has centered on the area near three transmission towers in Eaton Canyon, Pizarro said the risk of electrical equipment sparking a wildfire is higher with distribution equipment. The company has explored the possibility of placing transmission lines underground but said doing so is less feasible because of factors such as the amount of electricity of the lines; rougher, steeper terrain; and higher costs.
