2 min readHolocaust Janine Webber BEM has shared her story with the Bushey community on Yom HaShoah
urging them to “stand up to hatred and prejudice”
who survived the war as a child in Poland by being hidden and concealing her Jewish identity
was in conversation with Robert Voss CBE CStJ
who himself lost over 60 family members in the Holocaust
Janine told the audience: “We must remember the six million men
women and children who perished during the war
My hope is that people are kind to each other
We are all human beings and should show respect to each other.”
Voss said that Yom HaShoah had a lot of meaning for him
having lost so many relatives and also as a representative of His Majesty King Charles
who visited Auschwitz on Holocaust Memorial Day to mark 80 years since its liberation
Voss said afterwards: “It was an honour to interview the incredible Janine Webber BEM and to be a part of this commemoration.”
mayor and deputy mayor of Hertsmere Council along with many councillors and the leader of Hertfordshire County Council
Many leaders of other faiths were also present to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen and the end of the Holocaust
said: “I am so proud that we managed to hold such a poignant commemoration once again
Not only did we have a packed audience to hear from the incredible Janine
where nearly 30 young people saw a background film of the Holocaust and then had the opportunity to meet Janine personally before hearing her testimony.”
The synagogue’s Rabbi Feldman said: “I am always moved beyond words by the dignity and solemnity associated with our Yom HaShoah commemoration
I add the sense of urgency palpably felt in our memorial
We know it is only through continued commitment to Holocaust remembrance that we can educate the next generations
and our Bushey Yom HaShoah evening continues to play a critical role in this endeavour.”
Bibring paid tribute to the organising committee
the Holocaust Educational Trust and the Union of Jewish Students for their help in putting on both the events and for Janine’s “energy in supporting both”
He said: “The astonishing turnout from the community
faith leaders and dignitaries underlines the importance of remembering this terrible episode of history.”
Dowden said afterwards that Holocaust Memorial Day wasn’t just an opportunity for sombre reflection but was “a call to action”
adding: “It is a reminder that we must stand against hate

A former Hertfordshire teacher has been banned from the profession after a misconduct panel found he had sent “sexually motivated” messages to three “vulnerable” teenage pupils
was working as an RE teacher at a school in Bushey when the allegations against him came to light. He has since started as a PhD student at King’s College London
where he receives tens of thousands of pounds in public money from a research council
A Teaching Regulation Agency conduct panel last month heard that allegations about Burney’s behaviour came to light
He admitted that he had exchanged “informal and/or inappropriate” emails with three pupils
but denied that his behaviour was “sexually motivated”. The panel concluded that messages sent by Burney were “not inherently sexual in nature” but were “persistent” and suggested a “high level of intimacy”
They rejected his repeated claims that he had a “friend-like” relationship with pupils
and said in their report: “Given the teacher–pupil dynamic
the informality of messaging and the overfamiliarity with pupils who were known to be vulnerable
it could draw the inference that Mr Burney’s behaviour was done in the pursuit of a future sexual relationship”
Burney exchanged more than 200 emails with one of the pupils
part of a “relentless volume” of messages
He also messaged one of the pupils on WhatsApp and Instagram
while he told another that he had found her Instagram account
Burney messaged one of the pupils despite being told not to contact anybody at the school
including pupils. The panel found his actions to be “calculated and “motivated”
and that he “did not appear to acknowledge the impact of his conduct upon the pupils … who were all vulnerable teenagers”
despite showing “some remorse”
All three pupils had to have special arrangements for their examinations “due to the detrimental impact” of Burney’s actions. The panel’s report said his misconduct was “serious” and “fell significantly short of the standards expected of the profession”
It said banning him from teaching would prevent a future safeguarding risk and “protect children”. But while Burney has been barred from teaching at schools and sixth form colleges
King’s College London declined to comment when asked whether he has taught or will be allowed to teach at the university
Burney won an award from the university for being an “outstanding student”
he completed his teaching qualification at King’s College London
He also completed his undergraduate and Master’s degrees at the university
King’s College London says this was recently brought to their attention and they have initiated the relevant processes to consider the matter
As a PhD student funded by LISS Doctoral Training Partnership – itself funded by the Economic and Social Research Council – Burney is entitled to a stipend of more than £21,000 a year and a grant covering his tuition fees
His work looks at changes of leadership in social movements
with a particular focus on the Nation of Islam. LISS Doctoral Training Partnership did not respond to a request for comment
A spokesperson for the school in Bushey said the school is “committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for both students and staff”
They continued: “On the day concerns were raised
Mr Daniyal Burney was suspended and did not return to work. The case was referred to the police and the LADO [safeguarding officer] as per the school’s safeguarding policy
“Following an investigation his employment was terminated. [The school] acted swiftly and effectively and has offered support for those impacted in our community.”
The Harvester restaurant in Bushey Heath is set to close later this year
with the site to be transformed into a new Browns restaurant following a £1.7 million refurbishment
located on High Road and currently operating as The Windmill Bushey since the 1980s
will undergo a full revamp by owners Mitchells & Butlers (M&B)
The changeover is expected to be completed by September later this year
M&B has confirmed that around 50 new jobs will be created once the new Browns restaurant opens
known for its casual dining and salad bar offering
has operated at the Bushey Heath location for a number of years
which is positioned as a more upmarket dining option
will mark a significant change for the site
Local visitors may also recognise the boundary stone situated on the pavement opposite the restaurant
marking the border between London and Hertfordshire
A spokesperson for Browns said: “We are excited to announce we will be bringing Browns to Bushey later on this year.
“Following the success of our recent conversions in Wilmslow, Ruislip, Beaconsfield, and Southgate, we believe that Bushey provides the perfect location for our next project.
“We will invest more than £1.7 million converting the existing Harvester into a Browns Brasserie and Bar. We hope to open in late September 2025, subject to all approved planning and regulatory consents.
“It will be a terrific boost for the area, bringing our stunning, luxurious style to Bushey and creating employment opportunities for local people with upwards of 50 new jobs.
“Browns will be offering breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner set in traditional Browns décor seen across our locations throughout the UK. We can’t wait to see you there.”

Rayohits radioeast yorkshirenewsEast Yorkshire Campaigner Calls for Tougher Crossbow Laws After Bushey SentencingThe government this week announced tougher age verification for the online sale and purchase of crossbows
An East Yorkshire woman whose partner was killed with a crossbow says new rules don’t go far enough
Laura Sugden's been campaigning for tougher laws since Shane Gilmer was murdered in 2018
there have been multiple recent violent incidents
including the sentencing of Kyle Clifford for the murder of Louise and Hannah Hunt
and their mother Carol Hunt who was fatally stabbed
another incident in Leeds saw two women injured by a man who was later found carrying a crossbow and a firearm
The Government has outlined plans to strengthen regulations surrounding crossbow sales
as campaigners continue to press for more robust control of the weapons
Home Office minister Dame Diana Johnson confirmed this week that amendments have been tabled to the Crime and Policing Bill to bolster age verification checks for online sales and deliveries of crossbows
The Government’s amendments come as part of broader efforts to tackle the growing threat of violence involving weapons
campaigners argue these measures do not go far enough
an inquest solicitor and partner at Ison Harrison Solicitors
has been campaigning for reform since the 2018 death of Shane Gilmer
she said: "We wanted the government to consider bringing it in line with gun control
so a licensing system for anyone who wanted to purchase or sell crossbows
the only real legislation relates to the age of who can buy
Ms Vine represented Shane Gilmer’s partner
during the inquest and has worked alongside her since then to push for legislative change
While the Home Office initially declined to act
the 2021 Windsor Castle crossbow intrusion prompted a government consultation
In Parliament, Dame Diana Johnson acknowledged the public concern, stating that the government "will shortly be publishing their response to that consultation, setting out how they plan to go further to limit the availability and accessibility of crossbows in this country."
While Ms Vine welcomed tougher restrictions
she argued the changes announced don't go far enough
She said: "There needs to be more restrictions
We’ve worked quite hard providing evidence to the government
and we’re hoping that the response will lead to further restrictions
"Crossbows being imported into the country has ever been monitored
so we don’t actually know how many there are in the country in the first place
"We're just hoping that the government do push through with getting this response out."
Despite progress on the Crime and Policing Bill
no formal licensing or registration scheme currently exists for crossbows in the UK
Adults over 18 are legally allowed to buy and own the weapons without any requirement for registration
Dame Diana signalled an intention to act quickly if further changes to the law are deemed necessary: "The Prime Minister has already set out that if the law needs to change to recognise this new and dangerous threat
then we will change it and do so quickly."
