Catherine Fookes MP recently visited Caldicot’s brand new Cadet Centre, touring the state-of-the-art facilities and meeting with young cadets. The new Joint Cadet Centre (JCC) is part of the Reserve Estate Optimisation Programme (REOP) in Wales, which aims to modernise cadet infrastructure and provide efficient, future-ready spaces for both army and air cadets. The new building replaces the former Army Cadet Force facility on Mill Lane, which was demolished to make way for this bespoke centre - representing a £1.2 million investment in Caldicot’s young people. During her visit, Catherine spoke with cadets about their experiences, career goals, and what being a cadet means to them. She also answered questions about her role as Monmouthshire’s Member of Parliament before taking a tour of the new building, which features high-tech equipment including a flight simulator. “It was fantastic to visit the new cadet centre and speak to the cadets,” said Catherine. “I even had a go on the flight simulator, flying over Monmouthshire! The cadets are extremely talented, enthusiastic, and clearly have bright futures ahead of them.” The new centre provides a modern and spacious environment that will benefit today’s cadets and those of future generations. PLANS to extend a council depot across a recreation ground have met with objections from local residents and a town council. People living close to Monmouthshire County Council’s Pil Row depot in Caldicot have lodged objections to the plan that would see around one third of a recreation ground taken over for a compound for the authority’s waste tippers. Residents say the area is used by children for playing, is an important area of open space close to the Newport to Gloucester railway line and fear increased noise and smells from the depot expanding towards their homes. Caldicot Town Council has also objected to the proposal while Monmouthshire County Council’s own landscape officer Andrew Nevill has issued a holding objection as he said too little information has been provided about the loss of an amenity area and public open space “on the doorstep and serving nearby residential areas”. Impacts on the environment, biodiversity and bats have also been questioned by Mr Nevill. There have already been 20 objections received by council planners from members of the public, many stating they are local residents. One letter said the area is important to people living along Orchid Drive, Railway View and Estuary View the residential streets closest to the recreation ground where there is also a children’s play area with basketball hoop and football goalposts outside of the land earmarked for the compound. The letter stated: “The proposed development is to be built on the only local green space in the area, which has been used for recreation by local residents for many years since the houses were built. The field and the adjacent play park is always in use with the local children and walkers, and is much valued by the local residence as a tranquil safe space.” Another objection stated: “Your proposal would result in the loss of a beloved field, which serves as a crucial recreational area for the entire estate. It is a place where children play, dogs exercise, and elderly residents, who may not be able to walk long distances, can enjoy the outdoors and breathe fresh air.” Objectors have also suggested the expansion could be accommodated within the council’s existing site or the wider industrial estate or lorries should be kept at its Five Lanes depot near Caerwent. Plans submitted on the council’s behalf show trees and hedgreows would be planted along the border of the compound and an existing large Sycamore tree retained. The application states: “Overall, it is considered that the proposed development would be in accordance with Wales’ and Monmouthshire County Council’s Green Infrastructure Strategy.” The application is being assessed by the council’s planning department. This brand-new convenience store has restored Post Office services to Caldicot with new Postmaster Bobby Nakum and his wife, Bhavna. This has also re-introduced banking services to Caldicot town centre as there are no banks left in Caldicot. The official opening was performed by Cllr Peter Strong, Vice Chair of Monmouthshire County Council, and his wife, Cllr Jackie Strong. Caldicot Post Office unfortunately closed when the McColl’s store, where the branch was based shut, in January 2023. Post Office and Monmouthshire County Council have been working closely to re-open a replacement Caldicot Post Office at the heart of the town. A grant from Monmouthshire County Council enabled the refit of the former empty shop, with support from the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns programme. This has created a modern, light, bright and airy Post Office and well-stocked convenience store. The shop’s landlord Monmouthshire Housing Association waived two months’ rent to help Bobby to get his new business off the ground. Bobby and Bhavna already own Lifestyle Express convenience store in Tutshill, Chepstow, since 2017 which is just over the border in England. This will be their first store in Wales and their first Post Office, however, they are fortunate to have several friends who already run Post Offices who they can call on for help. They are also going to employ local people. Postmaster, Bobby Nakum, said: “We’re very excited to have opened our new business in Caldicot and to be taking on our first Post Office. We greatly appreciate all the support we have received from Monmouthshire County Council, Monmouthshire Housing Association and Post Office. The new Post Office and store opening hours are Monday to Saturday: 8am – 7pm; Sunday: 9am – 5pm. This will provide 74 hours of service a week for the convenience of customers. As a council, we are looking to secure the best possible routes for our residents and visitors to utilise while travelling within our towns. Thanks to all who participated in the consultation last year, we can design and develop an active travel route that will make people's journeys safer and more efficient in Caldicot.
