which aims to improve traffic flow and air quality in Calne
The project is being implemented under an experimental temporary traffic order (ETRO)
allowing changes for up to 18 months while the council evaluates the impact and gathers community feedback to decide on making the scheme permanent or reverting to pedestrian-only use
stated: We are pleased to have completed the work to open High Street to one-way traffic from north to south
I'd encourage residents to share their feedback on the changes through the experimental temporary traffic order process
as this will help us to refine or adapt the scheme if necessary
is to improve the air quality in Calne and also help to relieve some of the traffic issues in the town
We are committed to creating well-connected communities as part of our Business Plan
and we hope this trial will improve both traffic flows and air quality in Calne
traffic will flow south from Wood Street along High Street
while vehicles exiting High Street must turn left
Westbound traffic from Wood Street on to The Square must turn right at the mini-roundabout on Curzon Street and continue along the A4
The council has installed a central tarmac roadway with temporary barriers for pedestrian safety
and moved tree planters to other suitable areas
To read the ETRO and comment on it, people should go to: https://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/troconsultations

As part of its continued zero tolerance approach to tackling fly-tipping
Wiltshire Council has successfully prosecuted a Calne man after his waste was found dumped on a public footpath in the town
costs and compensation after pleading guilty to fly-tipping during a hearing at Swindon Magistrates Court on Friday 27 August
the council received two reports of fly-tipping on a public highway near The Green
that consisted of open carrier bags full of household waste
Checks showed the location is a fly-tipping hotspot
with six fly-tipping reports made to the council in this locations in 2024 and 11 since April 2023
The council traced the waste back to Mr Hope
and after further investigations he was issued with a £400 fixed penalty notice (FPN) for fly-tipping
and he was therefore prosecuted by the council
The offence took place prior to 23 April 2024
when the council's new £1,000 FPN for fly-tipping was introduced
Cabinet Member for Highways and Street Scene
said: We are committed to tackling fly-tipping in Wiltshire
and as part of our Business Plan commitment and our award-winning We're Targeting Fly-tippers (WTF) campaign
we have invested an extra £150,000 a year into tackling environmental crime
This investment has so far seen a 125% increase in fly-tipping prosecutions and a 118% increase in fixed penalty notices in the past year
which shows that we will take all legal options available to us wherever we find fly-tipping
The fines serve as a clear warning that illegal waste disposal will not be tolerated
and offenders will face serious consequences
Mr Hope could have avoided court action by paying the fixed penalty notice but he failed to do so
This area in Calne has become a hotspot for fly-tipping
with six reports made over the last year by residents
Anyone who spots fly-tipping at this or any other location in Wiltshire should report it to us and we will investigate and take action
Fly-tipping is a blight on our communities
and our message is clear - we will take action to tackle environmental crime in Wiltshire

A Calne resident has been issued with a £1,000 fixed penalty notice (FPN) by Wiltshire Council for fly-tipping household waste
Black refuse bags of waste were found dumped on the pavement near The Green in Calne
This location has recently become a fly-tipping hotspot
with 10 incidents reported to the council since the beginning of this year
who cannot be named as they were not convicted in court
was issued with the FPN following an investigation carried out by the council's Environmental Enforcement Officers
Cabinet Member for Highways and Streetscene
said: We are continuing our mission to tackle fly-tipping here in Wiltshire and our fixed penalty notices reflect how serious we are about it
our campaigns are also about educating people
And as part of our We're Targeting Fly-tippers (WTF) campaign we've recently launched a dedicated webpage about fly-tipping to provide residents with easily accessible information on how to dispose of their waste safely and legally - and how to report fly-tipping
I would encourage residents to have a look at the website and familiarise themselves with the information
especially if their giving their waste to someone else to dispose of as their waste is their responsibility
To find out more about how to dispose of waste and waste responsibilities, people should visit Fly-tipping
Smoke City in Calne has been given a three-month closure order at Swindon Magistrates Court
following recent seizures of illegal tobacco and vapes under the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014
The shop was served with a closure notice by Trading Standards officers on 23 January
where officers also discovered more illegal tobacco on the premises
A Trading Standards officer visited on 19 November and purchased a packet of Amber Leaf hand rolling tobacco which was not in standardised packaging and did not bear health warnings in English
Both the council and Wiltshire Police received complaints that illegal tobacco was being sold and that they were selling products to children.
345 packets of cigarettes and 87 pouches of hand rolling tobacco were seized and were all found to be illegal
£3055 cash found in a rucksack was also seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002
The employee working at the premises was recognised by officers as the same person who was previously working at New Road Mini Market in Chippenham
which was served with a three-month closure order on 12 December 2024. Paperwork relating to the previous closure order was also found on the premises
Only those who are named habitual residents and authorised persons are now permitted to enter the address
Anyone else entering the premises is committing a criminal offence and on conviction may be sentenced to 51 weeks imprisonment and/or a fine
said: I'd like to thank our Trading Standards officers for their hard work getting another positive result
Thanks also to Wiltshire Police for their collaboration this week
supporting us to keep the public safe and stop these scrupulous traders from trading
Their collaboration is invaluable when we carry out these operations
businesses that sell non-compliant vapes and illegal tobacco products have little regard for the impact on their customers' health
Illegal tobacco is not regulated or manufactured to the same standards as normal tobacco and is often found to contain higher levels of harmful substances
as well as chemicals which are not normally permitted
With this being the sixth closure order of this type in Wiltshire in the last six months
I hope this sends a message that we are committed to tackling businesses that aren't complying with the law and to deter others from taking part in similar activities
said: We are determined to clamp down on businesses which put the public's health at risk by selling non-compliant tobacco and vapes
The laws around them are there for a reason
We know there is a real risk that illicit vapes and tobacco
could contain dangerous levels of nicotine or chemicals you don't know you're inhaling
We are grateful to Trading Standards for their work and collaboration on these raids and we will continue to work with our partners to keep the public safe
The closure notice in Calne follows closure notices being obtained by the council's Trading Standards team for vape businesses in Chippenham
