“I am just lost for words if I am honest,” Cambuslang coach Kris Harris said
“To come to Murrayfield and put in that type of performance against an excellent Biggar team
“We lost to Biggar earlier in the season and then went down early here so the girls could have panicked
stuck to their game plan and never wavered from that
“This was the first Cambuslang youth team ever in the club’s 121-year history to be in a national final and I hope the girls made people proud because I am certainly proud
“When I started coaching three years ago we had girls at under-14 level and a handful at under-16 level and this season we have had 30 under-16s involved
“We also have an under-18s team here on finals day [in the girls Shield] so the future is bright.”
Biggar got off to a flying start and took the lead in the third minute when they found space on the edge for winger Neve Miller to score with centre Emma Wyllie converting to make it 7-0
Gordon and Scott tried to get Cambuslang into things
but in the seventh minute great handling by centre Beth Baillie and Miller set up full-back Neve Murray for Biggar’s second try
Captain Sophie Mellanby converted and it was 14-0
Cambuslang began to find their feet and some high tempo rugby culminated in No 8 Gordon claiming their first try
Cambuslang struck again when Scott picked up a bouncing pass and showed good pace and feet to go over
Biggar needed to find their mojo again and
Neat offloading gave Murray an opportunity and she scorched away for her second try
Anything Murray could do Scott could do the same for Cambuslang though
with Gordon breaking the gain-line and then the number 14 arcing round the defence and scoring her second try
Stand-off Emma Boyd converted to make it 21-17
Biggar claimed their fourth try just before the interval
with No 8 Eve Hamilton showing great strength to go over
Cambuslang needed to get the first score after half-time and they did just that when winger Maia O’Donnell showed great power to twist over the try line after a break by centre Lucy Symon
bringing iy back to a four-point game (26-22)
A few minutes later there was a fascinating foot race between speedsters Scott and Murray
the latter just getting back to haul down the Cambuslang opponent when it looked like she might be away
In the 39th minute Scott did get the better of Murray though – and the rest of the Biggar defence – to go round the outside and bag her hat-trick try
but Cambuslang were ahead for the first time
The Murray-Scott duel kept going and although the latter pulled the former down with a great cover tackle
the full-back managed to pop up a pass to Baillie who scored
Wyllie nailed an excellent conversion for Biggar and it was 33-27
Cambuslang were certainly not done yet though – far from it – and replacement Eleanor Keenan burst away to score their next try with 13 minutes left
tight-head Holly Mae Cowan converted and they were 34-33 up
That Keenan score gave Cambuslang another burst of energy in this breathless match and
loose-head Phoebe Forrest got over for their seventh try
Cowan again converted to put here team 41-33 ahead
Cambuslang sealed the win when Biggar knocked the ball on just metres from their own try-line as they chased things
Skipper Gordon pounced to go over for her second try of the day and when Cowan converted it was 48-33
The icing on the cake then came when Cambuslang’s ninth try came through Symon
but it was 53-33 and that is how it finished
they played really well and deserved their win,” said Richard Mellanby
“We started well and showed glimpses of what we can do
but we weren’t as strong at the breakdown as we normally are
but in time they will be proud that they played on the main Murrayfield pitch
it was a great advert for girls rugby in Scotland.”

Esme Hughes and Keira Bell scored tries early in the second period for Dundee
County responded with a try from player of the match Leah Sinclair which was converted by Wood
Two late tries by Keevah Molloy for Dundee could not be converted and Stirling won by a point
Scoring sequence (Biggar first): 5-0; 7-0; 12-0; 14-0; 14-5; 14-10; 19-10; 21-10; 21-15; 21-17; 26-17 (h-t) 26-22; 26-27; 31-27; 33-27; 33-32; 33-34; 33-39; 33-41; 33-46; 33-48; 33-53
Player-of-the-Match: Neve Murray was excellent for Biggar and has an exciting future
while loose-head Phoebe Forrest and captain Gemma Gordon carried hard for Cambuslang
but the prize goes to the victor’s hat-trick scoring flyer Rose Scott
Talking point: The desire to move the ball out of contact and shift the point of attack was a joy to watch from both sides
