Almost a year ago we brought you the news that the Big Mamma group (Circolo Popolare
Carlotta et al) were setting their sights on Canary Wharf
Now we've got the scoop on exactly what they have planned for their restaurant there
Barbarella is going to be a retro-inspired self-styled "wild and jungle-themed city pad"
It's taken over the old All Bar One site in the YY building on the South Colonnade
which is going to house their 70s-style chrome lounge and open kitchen
We're told the theme is inspired by the golden age of Roman cinema in the 70s
vintage Ferragamo silks everywhere and even an ice-cream terrace
extra-thin pizza along with dishes that include:
The bar upstairs will offer the group's biggest cocktail menu to date
with pistachio espresso martinis alongside a range of vintage Italian wines. And outside

Proposals for 77 Marsh Wall site to contain 925 homes and a mixed-use podium
Areli Developments is working up plans designed by Patel Taylor for one of London’s tallest residential towers in Canary Wharf
Sketch of the proposed tower shown in a first round of public consultation
The 220m-tall 77 Marsh Wall scheme is being developed on behalf of British Airways Pension Trustees Limited and would contain 925 homes above a mixed-use podium
it would be Canary Wharf’s third tallest tower if built
behind the 235m One Canada Square and 233m Landmark Pinnacle
A sketch of the tower included as part of a first public consultation shows a tower consisting of three split floorplates of varying heights on the 0.47ha dockside site
It would require the demolition of the site’s existing building
a 17-storey office block built in the early 1990s known as Sierra Quebec Bravo
Areli said the building offers “very little in the way of benefits to the community” and that it wanted to maximise the “unique and exciting” potential of the waterfront site with new public spaces
The podium would contain around 4,000sq m of retail
leisure and workspace along with a cinema and cycle parking under early plans aired in the public consultation
The site’s existing 17-storey office block would be demolished
Homes in the tower above the podium would be of a mix of tenures including shared ownership
“We want to challenge traditional housing models and deliver the UK’s most exciting multi-tenure housing development
an outward-facing space that embraces the existing community,” Areli said
The firm has also submitted a 26-page environmental impact assessment scoping report
to Tower Hamlets council ahead of the submission of a full planning application
Other firms currently on the project team include planning consultant DP9 and communications firm Kanda Consulting

The waters of Canary Wharf have been transformed with a gigantic new sculpture – a blue whale leaping from the dock in Wood Wharf – available to see in the UK for the first time
The spectacular four-storey-tall sculpture
there is more plastic swimming in the world’s oceans than there are whales – 150 million tonnes of it to be exact
the giant whale reveals itself as an intricate mosaic
crafted of plastic collected from Hawaiian beaches
To highlight just how much plastic produced by cities ends up in waterways
StudioKCA – a New York-based architecture and design firm – worked with the Hawaii Wildlife Fund to comb the beaches of Hawaii for plastic that they then used to build the 11 metre tall sculpture
Designed by artist/architect duo Jason Klimoski and Lesley Chang
Whale on the Wharf (Skyscraper) is crafted from a variety of sustainable elements
not just recycled plastic but a first-of-its-kind
The base has been created using a circular economy method
The biochar used within the concrete mix is made up of some of the used coffee grounds collected from Canary Wharf’s many cafes and restaurants – an efficient use for it
with 190 tonnes of spent coffee grounds being produced at the Wharf every year
The artwork is supported with a braced steelwork structure made from recovered and reused steel
Canary Wharf Group (CWG) has sent zero waste to landfill from its managed areas
The innovative and proactive approach to upcycling waste materials to create Whale on the Wharf (Skyscraper) is just one of many initiatives it has put in place to showcase its commitment to reducing waste and promoting a circular economy
The installation can be seen alongside over 100 other artworks at the UK’s largest free-to-visit
outdoor public art collection in Canary Wharf
It joins the likes of Camille Walala’s kaleidoscopic masterpiece Captivated by Colour
Helaine Blumenfeld’s Fortuna and Henry Moore’s Draped Seated Woman – affectionally referred to as Old Flo – which CWG recently extended the loan of for another five years
Artists Jason Klimoski and Lesley Chang (StudioKCA) said: “A whale is the largest mammal in the water
and it felt like the right form to take in order to show the scope and scale of the problem
There is more plastic swimming in our oceans than there are whales
Whale on the Wharf is a physical example of why we need to change how we use and dispose of plastic in the world today
and we’re thrilled to be showcasing this piece for the first time in the UK in Canary Wharf’s waters.”
Public Art at CWG said: “We are very proud to unveil such a thought-provoking and impactful installation as part of our permanent public art collection
particularly one that is as meaningful as it is visually striking
Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond the recycled plastic used in the sculpture – the installation process has also been carefully considered to reduce its carbon footprint
Whether visitors come to the Wharf specifically to see this iconic sculpture up close
or it catches their eye when passing through
we hope it provides everyone with some pause for thought.”
Visitors can enjoy a bite to eat at one of the 80+ cafes
bars and restaurants to choose from at Canary Wharf
or Kricket for dishes inspired by the flavours of India
The Whale on the Wharf (Skyscraper) joins Canary Wharf’s permanent art collection and can be seen at Wood Wharf now. For more information, visit https://canarywharf.com/whats-on/whale-on-the-wharf-by-studiokca/.
Canary Wharf Group (CWG) is the developer of the largest urban regeneration project in Europe
manages and currently owns interests in approximately 9 million square feet of mixed-use space and over 1,100 Build to Rent apartments
Canary Wharf’s retail offering is ranked the UK’s number one shopping destination by Green Street
CWG is committed to turning sustainability ambition into impactful action
Examples include purchasing 100% electricity from renewable sources since 2012
our partnership with the Eden Project creating a place for nature and people and working to deliver our Science-Based Targets
CWG has created a 24/7 city where people can live
work and thrive and enjoy all the benefits that Canary Wharf provides: great transport links
access to 16.5 acres of green spaces and waterside living; and a wide range of amenities including an award-winning arts and events programme
Canary Wharf’s retail and leisure offer includes over 80 bars
cafes and restaurants and more than 320 shops
pharmacies and health clubs all within 15 minutes’ walk
CWG recorded its highest annual footfall of more than 72 million to its retail malls in 2024

The newest addition to Canary Wharf’s permanent art collection can be found leaping from the dock at Water Street in Wood Wharf
Comprised of 5 tonnes of plastic waste pulled out of the ocean
Whale on the Wharf stands as a reminder of the millions of tonnes of plastic waste still swimming in our oceans…
Scientists estimate there are over 150 million tonnes of plastic in our oceans
with an estimated 8 million tonnes added every year
there is more plastic waste in our oceans than there are whales
In order to show just how much plastic waste produced by our cities ends up in our waterways
the artist/architect duo Jason Klimoski and Lesley Chang (StudioKCA) worked with the Hawaii Wildlife Fund to pull as much of it as they could from the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans in just under 4 months
and then shaped that waste into Whale on the Wharf
the colossal whale breaching the dock’s waters in front of you
it connects all of us together on this planet- in good and in tragic ways.
Not all of the 150,000,000 tons of plastic in our oceans is intentionally placed there- or even waste
Some of the plastic we were finding may have been from plastic bins and baskets washed into the ocean from the Tsunami that struck Japan almost 15 years ago and we thank those who shared this information with us
and natural disasters increasingly affect our cities and waterways
causing untold damage to human and marine populations; another reason to be aware of what we use and how we use it
Canary Wharf’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the recycled plastic used in the sculpture
The sculpture is supported by a new braced steelwork structure submerged underwater which has been designed and fabricated from recovered and reused steel
as well as a special bespoke concrete mix for the foundation
The design has been carefully considered to reduce its carbon footprint and follows the sculpture’s philosophy of re-use and the circular economy
The foundations use a concrete mix incorporating circularity principles to minimise our use of virgin materials and lower embodied carbon
In an impressive display of sustainability and circularity
the structure of Whale on the Wharf is thought to be the first of its kind to use waste coffee grounds
to produce a new material that supplements the sand and fine aggregates used in concrete to form the foundations for the sculpture
the waste coffee grounds become a new material known as biochar
adding this to the concrete mix reduces the strain on virgin materials and halts the release of CO₂ if left to biodegrade as waste coffee grounds
This has helped to significantly lower the embodied carbon of the concrete
Further research has shown that biochar potentially enhances the properties of concrete
meaning that less cement is needed and further reduces the embodied carbon
we have implemented a comprehensive waste segregation system to ensure that waste is properly sorted and recycled
This system plays a crucial role in reducing landfill waste and promoting a circular economy
By segregating waste into categories such as plastics and organic matter
we can effectively recycle and repurpose materials

Security camera footage captured the elusive creature on a dock in Canary Wharf in boost for London wildlife
News | London
A rare otter sighting in London’s financial district has been hailed by rewilding experts as a major win for urban wildlife
marking a hopeful sign of their return to the city
Security camera footage captured the elusive creature on a dock in Canary Wharf
appearing to inspect the boats moored along the water’s edge
The footage was picked up by Hannah Green and Tom Hill who live on a boat in the area
calling it a “wonderful reflection of the otters’ remarkable recovery” in recent decades
See also: The most surprising wildlife in and around London
“It’s absolutely fantastic to see footage of a healthy-looking otter captured on CCTV moving through the highly urbanised Canary Wharf area
“This is a wonderful reflection of the recovery otters have experienced in recent decades
having faced near extinction in the mid-20th century
their return is a powerful reminder that species can bounce back when given the opportunity
“That said, otters remain a rare sight in Greater London
but in a future where we more fully embrace nature within the city
and work to improve the quality of habitats in our rivers and the water itself
it would be wonderful if sightings like this became far more common.”
Otters are gradually making a comeback in the UK's urban areas
once nearly extinct in many parts of England
with populations recovering due to improved water quality and conservation efforts
These otters are now occasionally spotted in urban areas
Plans to reintroduce otters into London’s waterways were outlined by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan earlier this year
There is an initial commitment of over £800,000 to support these efforts over the next three years

It comes as a part of a wider initiative to revitalize the city’s waterways and enhance their health and biodiversity
Mr Khan has invested almost £30m since 2016 to help grow the city’s biodiversity. His 2024 manifesto promised a “Green Roots fund”
enabling councils and communities to bid for funding to pay for trees
He said: “I want to turbo-charge the restoration of nature to London’s rivers and waterways
working with partners across the capital to spearhead the return of a whole host of species - from water voles

Holcim UK has created an innovative concrete mix using recycled coffee grounds to support a 12-metre high sculpture of a blue whale in London’s Canary Wharf
The Whale on the Wharf (Skyscraper) by StudioKCA
was created from five tonnes of plastic waste recovered from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and has been sited in a wet dock in Canary Wharf’s Wood Wharf district
But the four-storey-high structure required firm counterweight foundations to keep it and its frame in place
Canary Wharf Group turned to Holcim UK to develop an innovative concrete to support it and the circular economy message that the sculpture embodies
Holcim experts devised a concrete mix containing biochar sourced from coppiced UK fast growing hard woods and used coffee grounds from Canary Wharf’s cafes and restaurants to form the structural supports to anchor the sculpture in place
Holcim UK, working with counterparts at the Holcim Innovation Centre in Lyon, has been testing the use of biochar in readymix concrete for a number of years
Biochar is widely used in agriculture and is produced by heating biomass
at temperature and in the absence of oxygen
The result is a black carbon-rich material like charcoal
spent coffee grounds can be turned into a carbon-rich biochar when treated through pyrolysis
The process of creating biochar can help prevent the formation of greenhouse gases which are generated when biomass waste (and used coffee) is sent to landfill and naturally degrades
releasing carbon dioxide and in some instances methane
but also because it aligns so well with the circular economy.”
while recycling waste that would normally decompose and release greenhouse gases."
director for structures at Canary Wharf Group
said: “This is a pioneering moment for CWG and our partners
the Whale on the Wharf (Skyscraper) project has provided us with a unique opportunity to test this innovative use of spent coffee grounds as a material in biochar
moving us ever closer to our net zero goals
“Thanks to CWG’s in-house waste management system
we are able to turn something once considered as waste
saving significant carbon from entering the atmosphere
“We are proud to be the first UK developer to use this coffee biochar mix in our concrete
embedding the principles of a circular economy in our design and construction process
I can’t wait to see where we can take this in our future projects and prove what we can do when working as a collective.”

Chief Investment Officer at Canary Wharf Group

Tuesday 19th November: This festive season Londoners are invited to spread some Christmas cheer to those who need it most
by donating a gift to a local child through the annual East London Business Alliance (ELBA) Toy Appeal
Canary Wharf is hosting its fifth yearly Toy Appeal with ELBA and BIG Alliance
inviting members of the public to donate a newly bought gift
which will be wrapped and hand delivered to a local child who might have otherwise gone without a Christmas present this year
Last year an incredible 18,000 toys were donated by those who live
supporting 117 community organisations but unfortunately the number of organisations needing support only increases every year
The donated toys are given to children who are most in need
some of which are fleeing domestic violence
refugees and children with disabilities and additional needs
The appeal will run until Friday 20th December
with the toy drop off point at Level -1 Jubilee Place mall
Those who are unable to visit in-person can donate online through the JustGiving page
and the volunteers will buy a present on their behalf
Julie Pell at Walthamstow Salvation Army said: “We have seen a 500% increase since Covid hit and the cost-of-living crisis means that referrals have stayed at the same level and continue to increase
after housing costs are taking out of the family budget
50% of children live in poverty which is catastrophic for the wellbeing and health of children
Gifts may not seem that important in the scheme of this situation
but actually they allow families an opportunity to enjoy a season that would otherwise be so very difficult.”
“The Toy Appeal has been an annual festive event run by ELBA for as long as staff can remember
What started as a small under the desk collection
now holds a very prominent feature within CWG and their festive program
the average number of toys donated has almost doubled from an average of 10,000 pre-pandemic to over 17,000 in the past 3 years (over 21,000 toys were donated in 2020)
has not only helped increased exposure and increased the donated number of toys
it has also allowed more community organisations to access the appeal
helping them to provide toys for their service users
many of whom might have otherwise gone without a toy this year
We have seen a large increase in toys requested from community organisations across East London and hope to meet this need through the generosity of CWG
corporate businesses and employees- without you all
the festive season will see much less smiles on children’s faces
A massive thank you in advance for all the support!”
Chief People Officer at Canary Wharf Group
“We’re delighted to be supporting the ELBA Toy Appeal for a fifth year
a cause that does so much good for local families during this festive period
surprising children with some much-deserved joy
residents and visitors consistently support the Toy Appeal each year
so we’re looking forward to seeing faces old and new get involved by donating this winter.”
As well as donating the space to facilitate the Toy Appeal
Canary Wharf Group staff will be busy volunteering at the Toy Appeal Grotto and in the local community
Projects include the East End Community Foundation’s Winter Bag Appeal which supports residents who are vulnerable to the impacts of the cost-of-living crisis
Full opening times for toy and gift donations:
Toy Appeal drop off point: Jubilee Place Level -1
Monday 18th November – Friday 20th December
Opening Times: Monday – Saturday: 10am – 4pm; Sunday: Closed
Toy Appeal asks for gift donations within the following guidelines:

Canary Wharf has unveiled the 12 new artworks coming to its highly anticipated Winter Lights festival later this month
created by some of the world’s most creative and celebrated light artists
the collection includes two brand new commissions created exclusively for the festival
and four artworks never before seen in the UK
Winter Lights is now an annual tradition for many Londoners
and the free-to-attend festival is set to transform Canary Wharf into a luminous landscape for its ninth edition from Tuesday 21st January
The festival will explore the transformative and otherworldly qualities of art and light
the line-up will take visitors from a towering stack of bathtubs pulsing with light and sound
to a mesmerising tornado of lights orbiting a pylon
Other works include a UK-first illuminated bird in flight
and a larger-than-life portal in Wood Wharf
The first of the festival’s two new commissions is Mirage
An immersive artwork that acts as a metaphor for consumers’ relationship with the fabricated mirage of social media
During daylight Mirage reflects and refracts the sunlight as it moves across the sky
and at night the pre-choreographed light show illuminates the artwork in an ethereal and mirage-like way
is a sound and light installation that amplifies the lives and histories of Bangladeshi women living in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets – using traditional Bangladeshi folk style painting and embroidered light thread to tell real life stories
Visitors are invited to explore London’s largest free light display as it opens for 12 nights from Tuesday 21st January to Saturday 1st February between 5-10pm
Those looking to spend a day out visiting the festival can also experience London’s longest running ice-skating rink
Pippa Dale Senior Arts & Events Manager at Canary Wharf Group comments: “Our Winter Lights festival will be lighting up London’s skies once again this month as it transforms the neighbourhood into a large-scale art exhibition
bringing light to these dark January evenings
We’re excited to be able to invite pioneering light creators from across the globe to exhibit in the extraordinary environment of Canary Wharf
bringing our customers and communities together
in what we hope will be our most dynamic show yet.”
who produced the artwork Stitching Light said: ‘We are very excited about Stitching Light
We have had the opportunity to collaborate with Bangladesh-based artists Ruhul Abdin and Oitij-jo who are based in Tower Hamlets
It exemplifies everything we like to do; to tell meaningful stories from people whose voices are seldom heard
and to create a beautiful artwork that will be enjoyed by thousands of people
We can’t wait for Canary Wharf Winter Lights and the reaction to this important piece of work.”
or pick one up from the friendly event stewards on arrival to help them navigate the exhibition
Using 32 stacked bathtubs reclaimed from socialist housing in high-rise blocks
Aj Vana Be aims to highlight the urgent need to protect our water resource
The playful yet thought provoking installation allows people to engage and interact with the artwork
everyday occurrence of bathing into a novel act
emphasising what a privilege it is to have clean
Circa represents circadian rhythms and circannual light levels at any given location
Each of the twelve light fixtures represents the average light fall over one month of the year
creating a three-dimensional clock that reflects the location’s light and dark cycles
The sculpture draws attention to our relationship with light
creating a mesmerising display that reflects the awe-inspiring systems in nature that affect human
and reveals invisible and overlooked mathematics in biology
Typical in all of Vendel & de Wolf’s work is their use of materials that are mass-produced and turned into something that resembles the natural forms of the universe
The swirling blackhole in Error uses prefabricated flickering consumer light fixtures
resulting in a random and out of sync effect
and exhibiting a natural born randomness within the supposed ‘faultless precision’ of technology
abstract visual representation connecting the randomness of the universe with the randomness of technology – sucking us all into the unknown and questioning whether technology can break the laws of nature
Wave continues Squidsoup’s ongoing explorations and obsession with elemental themes
The project consists of some five hundred individual suspended orbs
points of presence brought to rough light and sound
The orbs collectively create a resonant and dynamic audiovisual experience
where each one resonates in changing harmonies to create an enveloping and entrancing physical presence
Evanescent Droplets are part of Atelier Sisu’s Ephemeral ‘Bubble-tecture’ collection
light and sound installation aims to capture the concept of ephemerality and transience as a visual
By emulating the ethereal quality and magic of bubbles
appealing to our universal playfulness and childlike wonder
Evanescent Droplets encourages the audience to consider the world around them as a space of transience and fragility
Stitching Light by Emergency Exit Arts with Ruhul Abdin & Oitij-jo (New commission)
A sound and light installation amplifying the lives and histories of Bangladeshi women who have migrated to England and are living in Tower Hamlets
It weaves their stories together into an immersive sound and light installation
created using traditional Bangladeshi folk style painting and embroidered using light thread – to tell stories which are rarely gathered
Artificial Humans by Atelier Haute Cuisine (UK-first)
glowing figures are lifelike but are also cold and distant
Modelled from real people through the masterful human hands of Benny & Bernd
Artificial Humans represents what the future could be
questioning if the warmth we feel within still come from the people around us
or are we slowly being dragged down into the world within our devices
An immersive artwork examining our relationship with the fabricated mirage of social media
the disks of acrylic reflect and refract the sunlight as it moves across the sky
the pre-choreographed light show illuminates the artwork in an ethereal and mirage-like way
the audience is invited to move through the two halves of the work
light and sounds from different perspectives
Bird Passing By by Luminariste – Benjamin Nesme & Marc Sicard (UK first)
In response to our declining bird population
Luminariste have created a giant bird designed to sit in urban spaces and encourage us to look up at the sky
Bird Passing By paints a picture of a bird’s complete movement when in flight
made up of sixty-four sections modelled on birds whose flight was captured at different phases
animate each frame into a narrative which recounts the migration of a bird crossing different environments
The public is invited to discover the work in its entirety
Portal is a monumental public art installation designed to evoke awe and wonder
The inside of the giant archway is lined with diffused LED that moves and shifts to create an otherworldly
Transporting viewers to a place where anything can happen
where unexpected apparitions appear among the well-known landscapes and spaces the viewers are accustomed to experiencing every day
Positive Spin by Liz Harry and Invisible Wind Factory
Positive Spin is a 5.5m high machine from the collective minds of artistic experience creators Invisible Wind Factory (Kazimier Productions)
and illustrator Liz Harry that invites visitors to step up and receive a random fortune
Inspired by a love of summers spent at beach front arcades
it’s part immersive experience and part spectacle
this uplifting artwork aims to share the importance of looking forward positively
Illusion Hole is the sixth artwork in UxU Studio’s “Use Your Illusion” series
where meteor lights are arranged to create a flowing
light becomes more than a visual effect; it embodies the illusion of tangible substance
blurring the boundary between what we perceive and what exists
An ever-changing cascade of words created by thousands of perfectly timed falling water droplets
The words are derived from a number of live news sources
with the speed at which information is sourced
exchanged and updated is almost inconceivable
The work effectively translates this abstract phenomenon into a visual experience
The isolation of the words from their context is also indicative of how easily meaning can be distorted
The Clew is made from 100 circles of red light to create a beautiful structure around the Cubitt Steps Bridge
The minimal and elegant structure will create stunning reflections on the water and frame the bridge
making visitors appreciate this every-day object in a new way
Shine Your Colours by Tine Bech (Denmark)
Originally commissioned for Summer Lights 2021
is a multifaceted artwork that allows visitors to see themselves and the world through different colours
these six transparent coloured glass panels will be illuminated
Captivated by Colour by Camille Walala (France)
Originally designed as part of the London Mural Festival
Walala’s Captivated by Colour has now become a permanent feature of our public art collection
Playing with the long perspective of the tunnel
the colourful design shows an optical pattern that shrinks and elongates as it moves across the bridge
See this iconic piece transformed for our Winter Lights festival
with its rhythmic coloured lights mimicking and enhancing the optical patterns
A permanent installation of more than 500 illuminated acrylic rods installed in a water channel
the programmed illumination regularly changes colour and frequency throughout the day and evening
mimicking the changing environment and seamlessly fusing art and life
Elantica ‘The Boulder’ by Tom&Lien Dekyvere (Belgium)
Elantica uses discarded circuit-boards to fuse nature and artifice
By mimicking a natural rock formation with electronic materials
the boulder seeks to demonstrate our world’s tendency to create a digital version of reality
The repurposing of e-waste as the art medium for this geometric form indicates a desired pursuit of harmony between nature and technology
Lightbenches ‘Classic’ by LBO Lichtbank (Germany)
Our stunning Lightbenches are firm favourites within the permanent art collection
glow and illuminate their surroundings proving that the functional can also be beautiful
Take the weight off your feet as you near the end of our trail at the Lightbenches
Please note visitors are encouraged to attend on weeknights
