TJ in action at the Home Nations competition
A Carrickfergus woman previously voted the best female wrestler in the UK is launching Northern Ireland’s first all-female wrestling club
has been involved in the sport since she was nine
who is the head coach at Barbarians Wrestling Club in the town
as the club gears towards moving to new premises
having run classes from Sunnylands Community Centre for years
TJ is preparing to start training sessions solely for women and girls
It will be part of a new branch of the club called Bellatrix
Some of the women and girls who already attend Barbarians Wrestling Club in Carrickfergus
who will be gearing up to join the new all-female Bellatrix club
“Women’s wrestling is growing worldwide; it’s the fastest-growing sport in America and in Europe at the minute
And I just think with the new Barbarians club opening
it’s a perfect opportunity for the Barbarians to set up their own female-only club,” she explained
but teenagers feel a bit awkward wrestling boys,” she said
“I think we were lucky we started at a young age
but I know loads of girls start when they’re teenagers and they just don’t know.”
The two women have competed successfully in England
as well as Sweden and France in recent years
and TJ was named the best female wrestler in the UK at the inaugural Home Nations competition two years ago in Manchester
But it isn’t all about the accolades for the women
“We get some girls coming to the club who are lacking in confidence
I’d say a lot of women come for self-defence
they realise the sport is really good fun too,” said TJ
“They get into it and then they do want to compete
We’re all really good friends in this club… so I think it has a good social aspect as well.”
The Barbarians club already has a lot of female members
but there’s no cut-off point when it comes to newcomers wanting to join
the Bellatrix club hopes that by providing a safe space for just women and girls to train
it will motivate more females to try wrestling
Encouraging women of all ages and backgrounds to give the sport a go
Zoe continued: “I think you just have to get stuck in
“It probably is to do with [the idea that] you grow up and you’re told to ‘be a girl’ and ‘be pretty’ and not that you’re weak but that you’re more sensitive [as a girl]
what would be 10 new girls on the mat this year
but you get the wee ones coming in just for a bit of rough and tumble
whereas the girls actually want to come and learn
And I do think they listen to me and Zoe more because we are girls — we’re like role models to them
“A lot of parents will bring their wee boys and they’ll bring the sisters to watch or something
and within a couple of weeks the girls are on the mat too
And I think it’s important that they see other girls on the mat.”
The Bellatrix club is hoping to open its new training facility in Carrickfergus within the next month
with training dates and timetables for the female-only sessions to follow
Barbarians train at Sunnylands Community Centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays
with junior classes at 6pm and seniors following at 7pm
More details can be found on the Bellatrix or Barbarians Wrestling Club Facebook page.
