CASTLEFORD TIGERS went down 32-8 to Wakefield Trinity to round off Magic Weekend The Tigers were dreadful for most of the game trailing 16-4 at half-time before succumbing to three more second-half tries And it’s fair to say that Castleford head coach Danny McGuire was frustrated by his side’s display saying after the game: “I’m really disappointed I thought were beaten to every punch and in every department that we look at it in our game to win we were beaten comprehensively From second one you could see their intent They kicked it deep and were up for a physical battle but I’m not sure we were “We deserved nothing out of the game I don’t think for most of the game we were prepared to get dirty and we got what we deserved “We prepared really well and gave the players lots of information there was an eight-day turnaround with no fatigue and plenty of recovery inbetween sessions McGuire also feels that Isaiah Vagana should have been sinbinned for a high shot on Dan Okoro – even though he didn’t see ‘much in it’ “I don’t think there was anything in the tackle but with what’s gone on for the last few weeks “That’s the frustration of the inconsistency of it Nobody really knows – I don’t think he’s gone to hit Dan Okoro bad there “Seeing some instances over the past few weeks it’s a sinbin so I can’t work out why it isn’t.” The Castleford boss also explained Tex Hoy’s late substitution and took aim at the green card given to Joe Westerman which saw the Tigers concede He was trying to run it off at the end but we will see “Joe Westerman took a bang and went off with a green card and we conceded a try whilst he was off – that’s something we will have to look at.” Wakefield Trinity boss Daryl Powell and Castleford Tigers counterpart Danny McGuire have both criticised the delays present in Super League at the minute after their Magic Weekend clash lasted longer than two hours The meeting between the two West Yorkshire rivals at St James’ Park on Sunday night – which ended in a comfortable 32-8 Wakefield win – was the last game of the weekend Numerous decisions were sent upstairs throughout by on-field referee Tom Grant to video referee James Vella both Powell and McGuire had their say on those delays with the main one coming for a tackle on Tigers forward Dan Okoro by Trinity’s Isaiah Vagana in the first half Cas head coach McGuire was satisfied with that outcome when asked about it post-match but was far from happy about the delays on the whole He said: “Some of the stoppages are horrific but we’re taking away any fatigue elements “No player should be tired… when my players are telling me they’re tired “There’s so many stoppages with the video referees and the game’s ugly at times It’s taking what’s good about our game away from it “Make a decision and get on with it.” Since Trinity’s return to Super League Powell hasn’t been shy in airing his frustrations with the video referee process And while he shared McGuire’s anger at the delays again post-match he believes the conversation has been done to death now The veteran coach added:  “I watched the NRL this morning you watch them give a try and it’s either confirmed or they stop it then have a look at it then at least there’s a chance for it (the game) to just carry on even if you change it to that (in Super League) “It’s tough for officials because our camera angles aren’t as good as they are in the NRL or other sports so I reckon there’s a challenge there “We keep shooting ourselves in the foot though really we shouldn’t be talking about it as we are whatever’s best for the sport and for the sepctators Sometimes we’re looking at it 30 times “I can tell on some of them after two looks it’s something we’ve got to do better but I’d like to stop talking about it © Planet Sport Limited 2025 • All Rights Reserved Castleford have confirmed Martin Jepson has become their majority shareholder with the Tigers owner vowing to strengthen their side to one which can compete in Super League first became involved in the club in December 2023 when he purchased a 32% stake His desire to complete a takeover has been known for months with numerous Jepson has become the majority shareholder at The Jungle he has purchased the shares of husband and wife duo Ian and Janet Fulton who have held a majority share of the Fords since the early 1990s Jepson said: “I am delighted to now be the majority shareholder of my boyhood club “I have been a Castleford fan all my life and I know what the club means to so many families in the area “I have Jungle-based outfit with the prop joining Queensland Cup outfit Brisbane Tigers Namo was let go by the Fords at the back end of last month to make space for the arrival of Tom Amone from NRL side Canterbury Bulldogs just over a year after initially joining the club Having joined Cas ahead of the 2024 campaign the 24-year-old made 24 appearances for the club across all competitions SUPER LEAGUE TOTW: Magic Weekend Team of the Week – Hull KR and Wakefield Trinity star with six clubs represented Commenting on Namo‘s signing Brisbane Tigers head coach Matt Church – who coached him during his stint at the PNG Hunters – said: “I think he will bring a load of intent to our team “Due to his low centre of gravity and powerful physique he can be very hard to handle in attack and very impactful in defence Outside of trying to bring success to the Tigers he will have an eye on taking the next step in his career and doing so means that he will be playing well for us and raising the level of our performance “He was one of five Hunters players to debut under me to go on to play Super League,” Church continued “Prior to his stint with Castleford Tigers he was contracted to the North Queensland Cowboys and was tracking towards an NRL debut before a season-ending ACL injury “We have remained in close contact on his journey and it was a no-brainer for me to want to bring him to the Tigers.” Namo has plenty of experience at this level with 39 appearances in the Queensland comp across spells with the Hunters and Townsville He also brings Test match experience to his new employers, Magic Weekend blows 👉🏻 Magic Weekend 2026 venue revealed as likely date for event disclosed Magic Weekend and Super League’s return to St James’ Park brought another entertaining weekend of action along with a handful of fresh injury concerns Across the competition, here’s a look at the players who question marks now hang over after they picked up knocks during the Super League action we’ve just seen at St James’ Park… Castleford brought the curtain down at Magic on Sunday night as they lost 32-8 to Wakefield Trinity being beaten by their rivals for the second time in only three weeks The Tigers are one of eight Super League clubs who don’t have a game this week as they aren’t involved in the Challenge Cup semi-finals, and that may be a good thing as Tex Hoy limped off late on at Magic with a leg issue Catalans could well be without influential captain Ben Garcia for their Challenge Cup semi-final against Hull KR this weekend after he was forced off with a groin problem during the Dragons’ 26-24 defeat against Leigh Leopards at Magic Head coach Steve McNamara confirmed post-match on Saturday afternoon that they were staying in Leeds for the duration of the week leading up to the semi-final and that Garcia would go for scans on his issue KR themselves lost centre Oliver Gildart to a knee injury just six minutes into their 54-0 win against Salford Red Devils on Saturday evening in the North East Robins boss Willie Peters admitted he’s hopeful Gildart will recover in time for the Challenge Cup semis though with the issue calming down as the game went on without him Tom Davies and Joe Burgess are all also expected to return to the fold this weekend Warrington’s injury blow came in the shape of a player who didn’t feature at Magic Weekend in Danny Walker Wire boss Sam Burgess had confirmed that the England international had picked up a knee problem ahead of Magic but named him in his 21-man squad for their clash against Wigan Warriors at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon Burgess confirmed the hooker needs surgery on his knee issue The Wolves take on Leigh in the Challenge Cup semis on Sunday afternoon CASTLEFORD TIGERS head coach Danny McGuire yesterday revealed that he will be heading back into the transfer market for a back-rower following a serious injury to Jeremiah Simbiken Simbiken will be out for 12 weeks in a best scenario with Castleford’s only recognised back-rower being Alex Mellor So which second-rowers could McGuire target The Tigers have already signed Jordan Lane for 2026 and beyond but could McGuire try and get the back-rower in early Stranger things have happened with Hull FC head coach John Cartwright deploying Zak Hardaker and Ed Chamberlain in the back-row but Lane himself is out injured with a broken arm That in itself could scupper any immediate deal given the fact that Castleford need new blood and now Adam Holroyd has already played seven games for Warrington Wolves in 2025 but now Lachlan Fitzgibbon and Ben Currie have been Sam Burgess’ preferred 11 and 12 in recent weeks The 20-year-old has impressed whenever he has been given the nod but with Fitzgibbon and Currie appearing to be solid choices in the upcoming Warrington fixtures could McGuire look towards Holroyd as a short-term fix He joined Hull KR ahead of the 2025 Super League season but Leon Ruan has yet to make his debut for Rovers Ruan could certainly help bolster McGuire’s ranks for the short-term whilst Simbiken is out the former Leeds Rhinos forward has a lot to prove and a loan spell with consistent game time could help Ruan’s case moving forward Kavan Rothwell has yet to make his Super League debut for Leigh Leopards The second-rower has 18 appearances under his belt for the Cumbrian side and is impressing for Paul Crarey’s side in the Championship it’s perhaps only a matter of time before the 22-year-old gets a shot in Super League – could McGuire be tempted to give Rothwell his top-flight blow Castleford Tigers look set to head back into the transfer market – with one specific position in mind for Danny McGuire The loss of Jeremiah Simbiken for the next three months at least means the Tigers are now incredibly light in the second row: with only Alex Mellor left standing as a recognised back-rower The likes of George Lawler and Joe Westerman are candidates to fill in there this weekend against Wakefield Trinity at Magic Weekend – but after that the Tigers have a fortnight to find a new signing owing to a free weekend for the Challenge Cup semi-finals Here are some possible options for McGuire and his men – but there isn’t an abundance out there right now. The Wolves do have some depth in their pack – though like most Super League teams right now Lachlan Fitzgibbon appears to be on track to be passed fit for Magic Weekend which would mean Holroyd may well miss out again One place where there is quality that could be signed is Salford The Tigers’ capture of Chris Atkin this week shows that there is still scope for business at the Red Devils Shorrocks has played there for Salford this season Could he be an option if the Red Devils need to further clear the decks This one is slightly left-field for a couple of reasons: but it does make sense on another level The Tigers have already signed Lane for 2026 and beyond That always leaves the door ajar for the potential of a deal being brought forward – though Lane is currently sidelined with a broken arm Don’t rule it out – but it might not happen for a while The Hull KR forward has been playing on loan at Sheffield but is in the Robins’ Magic Weekend squad for their clash in Newcastle the smart money would be on him not featuring with Wallace still to make his debut in Super League for Rovers If Willie Peters needs the forward to get game-time in Super League could Castleford emerge as a potential landing spot on a short-term loan 👉🏻 Sam Burgess declares interest in Perth job as huge NRL revelation made 👉🏻 ‘Gone too far’: More Super League coaches unite against tackle laws 👉🏻 Super League predictions: Huge Hull KR win and Leeds shock among Caitlin Beevers’ tips 👉🏻 My Ultimate Team: Lachie Miller’s best 13 including Leeds quartet and NRL stars Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player Castleford Tigers are set to head into the transfer market once again with a back-rower high on their agenda after a lengthy injury to Jeremiah Simbiken Simbiken suffered a knee injury during last weekend’s victory over Huddersfield Giants and Castleford coach Danny McGuire admitted in the aftermath of that win that things did not look good for the forward with Simbiken set to undergo knee surgery that will rule him out for at least the next three months McGuire said on Thursday: “I don’t want to jump the gun medically but it’s going to be a lengthy one He’s having an operation in a couple of weeks and we’ll have to reassess it from that best case scenario I’m being told – and that’s best-case It’s not a position where we’re blessed with numbers: Mells (Alex Mellor) is our only back-rower in the squad So it’s something we’ll have to look at.” That left McGuire admitting the club will go into the transfer market to try and find someone to add to their thinning back-row options Castleford have already done a plethora of mid-season recruitment with the likes of Tom Amone and Brad Singleton coming in And the Tigers’ transfer business is certainly not done yet When asked if he would be looking for a new forward We’ve got people who can fill in that position “George Lawler and Joe Westerman can do it but I don’t think we can go the rest of the season without an out-and-out back-rower It potentially might be something we look at I’ll have to see if that’s possible.” 👉🏻 Catalans star labels Super League ‘horrendous’ and ‘unwatchable’ as NRL plea made 👉🏻 Ranking 2025 Magic kits from worst to best with Leigh Leopards LAST 👉🏻 Magic Weekend 2026 location revealed as talks begin over possible venue 👉🏻 St Helens keen to tie down off-contract prop as Konrad Hurrell contract claim made Wakefield Trinity posted a dominant 32-8 Super League Magic Weekend victory over Castleford Tigers, bringing the curtain down on a two-day festival of rugby league at St James' Park in Newcastle. Trinity scored six tries in the success through full-back Max Jowitt, prop Caius Faatili (two), right wing Lachlan Walmsley (two) and left wing Tom Johnstone. Castleford could only respond with two unconverted tries on the day via wing Josh Simm and centre Sam Wood, as the Tigers disappointed with their performance. The victory moves Wakefield on to 10 points in the standings, level with St Helens, Warrington Wolves and Catalans Dragons as their return Super League campaign continues to impress. Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player If that score had much to do with good Trinity play, their second seven minutes later owed much to a slice of fortune: captain Mike McMeeken seeking to control a loose ball with his foot, bobbling possession backwards, and then setting off into the space before finding Faatili. Outstanding defence from Walmsley to somehow hold the ball up in-goal as Alex Mellor dived to score halted Castleford's response, with Wakefield's Isaiah Vagana then extremely fortunate to avoid a card of some description having hit Daniel Okoro in the head with his shoulder. In the 32nd minute, Castleford did get onto the scoreboard as Simm finished strongly in the right corner, but Rowan Milnes was unable to convert. Three minutes from the end of the half, Wakefield's commanding lead was restored, though, as Walmsley flew in brilliantly in the corner for a finish of real quality. That score left things 16-4 to Trinity at half-time, and just three minutes into the second half they extended that further as Johnstone claimed a well-weighted Mason Lino kick-pass in the corner to score. Jowitt converted exceptionally for 22-4, and with Wakefield continuing to dictate play, Walmsley attempted his second acrobatic finish of the game, only for the Video Ref to spot him losing the ball in the act of scoring. Castleford notched their second try on the hour mark as captain Wood slid in, but Wakefield were next to come close when Walmsley tore down the right and kicked inside, only for the chasing Jowitt to knock the ball on. Wakey were not to be denied, though, and within moments had their fifth through Walmsley in the corner again after Harvey Smith made the telling break and Lino gorgeously drifted on a pass before looping one over to the right wing. Faatili then lifted the Wakefield fans to their feet in the Leazes End courtesy of a remarkable break and score which started from within his own half and ended under the sticks. Castleford Tigers head coach Danny McGuire told Sky Sports... "I thought we were rubbish. We were soft. We got outmuscled, out-enthused. They were better in every department. It is really tough to take as a coach. "Physically I thought we were really off it today. Consistency - falling in love with ourselves a bit because of one good performance. "You have to do the hard things it takes to win and we didn't do that today. Didn't do any right things today. It is disappointing and frustrating. "I am going to tell them what I feel and think. I have to be honest with them." Wakefield Trinity head coach Daryl Powell told Sky Sports... "I thought the boys were class today. We opened up and expressed ourselves as we got into the game. "I thought the pack out there were phenomenal, they really dominated the game. "The team overall were outstanding today." Dozens of Super League players are in the final few months of their existing contracts with their current clubs – and all 12 teams are likely to be very busy ahead of 2026 Castleford Tigers are a club that certainly fall in that bracket A good chunk of their squad are off-contract and Danny McGuire may well go through a significant rebuild for next year Here are some of the Super League players off-contract they could look at. Castleford aren’t the only club where there’s likely to be a sizable squad turnover at the end of this year: St Helens will also say goodbye to a number of big names in all eventuality That will include a number of quota players – and Mbye may be among them Could he provide Castleford with a senior option it’s a long shot given his allegiances to local rivals Wakefield Trinity But Pitts is still clearly performing at the very highest level and with a number of players likely to leave in Castleford’s pack. The veteran forward may well be heading for pastures new in 2026 after several seasons with the Wolves If Vaughan wants to remain in England and play on – could he be tempted by a move to West Yorkshire Whether Castleford go into the market to look for a frontline half-back depends on what happens with Rowan Milnes who is off-contract at the end of this year But if they do decide to go down that route Fages is one of the highest-profile options on the market Still unsigned at Catalans beyond this year would he be interested in returning to England It’s a move that was heavily rumoured earlier this year – and a transfer that felt very close to happening when Salford were embroiled in financial difficulties The Red Devils remain in a state of uncertainty and Ormondroyd has arguably been even better amidst some difficult times for Paul Rowley’s side Could that transfer finally happen in 2026 👉🏻 Ranking every Super League coach by career win percentage with clear winner 👉🏻 Manly starts in the halves.  Club captain Leroy Cudjoe led the team from loose forward Matty English accompanied Woolford by starting on the bench Academy graduates Jacob Algar and Archie Sykes are left out On their first attacking set of the game the Tigers strike after two and a half minutes through former Giant Innes Senior centre Zac Cini won the competition in the air and popped the ball down to the winger who went in untouched Rowan Milnes’ kick sailed wide to leave the score at 0-4 in the favour of the visitors A quick response from the boys in claret and gold as Swift’s break fed full back Gagai sent the John Smith’s delirious George Flanagan added the extras to take the score to 6-4 in favour of Luke Robinson’s men A very back and forth kind of game with Cas scoring the next try – however in the other corner to their last A spiralling kick from Milnes was dropped by Gagai which gave Danny McGuire’s men the field position then a mistake on his own line from Cudjoe allowed the Tigers to retain possession which allowed Castleford to swing the ball from left to right in front of their own fans for Josh Simm to score in the corner Milnes’ successful conversion extended the visitors lead to 6-10 A third try for the visitors with 14 left of the first half as another former Giant in Alex Mellor claimed a hanging kick to score in front of the travelling fans With Giants picking up momentum and 33 minutes gone things helped their case as Joe Westerman was sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes for a high shot.  Giants allowed Cas to extend their lead to a minimum of two converted tries with three minutes left on the clock through Milnes’ left boot The second half only had to wait six minutes for its first score as a floated ball from Daejern Asi found Senior in the corner who dotted down for a four pointer Milnes’ kick sailed through the uprights to take the score to 6-24 Cas hit 30 points with 20 left of the game as fullback Tex Hoy found Milnes on a hard line who dotted the ball under the sticks His conversion took the visitors to the 30 point mark A try through Oliver Wilson gave the Giants hope with 13 left on the clock The prop hit a line and bulldozed his way over from close range Flanagan’s two points took the score to 12-30.  site by fluidcm.co.uk Wakefield Trinity vs Castleford TigersDIY Kitchens StadiumThursday 17th April 2025Kick off: 8:00pm Tigers are closing in on a deal to sign Tom Amone for the rest of this season: but it will have to be a case of one in Love Rugby League revealed that Amone would be joining Hull KR in 2026 but heading out on a short-term deal elsewhere first for the rest of this season All Out Rugby League then revealed that club to be Castleford It represents a major recruitment boost for the Tigers even if it is only for the remainder of this year But there is a small hitch: Castleford are full on the overseas quota – meaning someone has to go before Amone can come in There are some who clearly will not be going anywhere and as such can immediately have a line struck through next to their names in terms of potential outgoings Hooker Judah Rimbu is obviously at the top of that list given how Castleford beat off interest from elsewhere to sign the Papua New Guinea international and how he will clearly have a big part to play in 2025 Castleford have high hopes for Fletcher Rooney at fullback: but Tex Hoy categorically remains the first-choice for now That leaves another pair of new recruits in Jeremiah Simbiken and Zac Cini as well as forward Liam Horne and Sylvester Namo Those four have only missed one or two games each though so far in 2025 it is Namo who feels the most likely to leave His deal is up at the end of this season – as is Simbiken’s to be fair – but given how Amone is coming in it feels more likely that Castleford would look to move a prop on as opposed to a back-rower Love Rugby League has been told there have been conversations among recruitment officials at clubs where Namo’s name has been circulated as a possible transfer option Castleford do have to do something – and the Amone deal has moved along at such a pace that it could be announced as early as this week He obviously wouldn’t be ready to be involved against Wakefield on Thursday night Castleford Tigers quota players: Sylvester Namo (2025) 👉🏻 Wigan star’s rugby union links entire pack looks completely different – and far more competent and capable when it comes to mixing it with the better teams in Super League Amone, who will join Hull KR on a three-year deal next year, is clearly a massive signing for the remainder of this season and will potentially lay down a benchmark in the minds of supporters about what Castleford can attract for 2026 That brings pressure on the club’s hierarchy but in the short-term the capture of Amone is a fine piece of business from the Tigers If we are to safely assume he is a bonafide starter – he will be – then he will partner George Lawler in the front row The rest of the Tigers’ starting pack would be unchanged with Alex Mellor there is now much more in the way of artillery Singleton provides a wealth of experience and will prove to be another good addition And with Salabio and Dezaria competing for bench options alongside players such as Muizz Mustapha and Dan Okoro The final bench spot will go to Rimbu’s interchange hooker – be that either Liam Horne or Cain Robb it is now obvious Castleford have finally acted to plug one of the major shortcomings in their squad Castleford’s possible strongest pack
