Armed officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command carried out a series of coordinated raids on Saturday evening (3 May)
A 40-year-old man was detained at a property on East Street
Residents reported a loud bang before witnessing a shirtless man being led away by officers
was arrested in the Stockport area following a separate operation on Heathbank Road in Cheadle Hulme
although the suspect’s age has not yet been confirmed
Simultaneous activity saw a 29-year-old man arrested in Swindon
and a 46-year-old man taken into custody in west London
The arrests are part of a pre-planned operation targeting what authorities describe as a "suspected plot to target a specific premises." All five men have been arrested on suspicion of the preparation of a terrorist act under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006
Four of the suspects – those arrested in Rochdale
and west London – are believed to be Iranian nationals
The nationality of the fifth man is still being established
head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command
described the investigation as “fast-moving,” noting that officers are still in the early stages of piecing together motives and assessing the broader risks involved.
“We are working closely with those at the affected site to keep them updated,” Commander Murphy said
“We understand the public may be concerned and I would ask them to remain vigilant.”
Police confirmed that they are actively liaising with the impacted site to provide support and guidance
although further details remain confidential for operational reasons
were supported by officers from Greater Manchester Police
Wiltshire Police and Counter Terrorism Policing nationally
a heavy police presence remained on East Street
where the front door of the targeted house appeared severely damaged from forced entry
All five suspects remain in custody while searches continue at several locations across Greater Manchester

Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for strategic highways
Extensive road improvements have begun in Cheadle this week
thanks to highways investment in the area.
Highways crews are carrying out essential repairs on the A522 Tean Road between the junction of Charles Street to the junction of Huntley Lane.
which started today (November 4) is seeing carriageway potholes fixed by a thermal road repair machine and vegetation being cut back along with repairs to kerbs
work is being carried out between the hours of 9.30am and 2.30pm until Friday 8 November with temporary traffic lights in place to help traffic flow.
There will be a temporary closure in place on Tean Road
on Thursday 7 November so that lines can be painted.
Access to businesses and residences will be maintained throughout the scheme.
Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for strategic highways
“We’re pleased to see this improvement work underway in Cheadle
as quality roads are essential for keeping everyone connected and safe.
"Our goal is to limit any disruption to the community
which is why we’ve scheduled work during off-peak hours
and ensured access to local properties and businesses remains open throughout.
"The county council remains committed to fixing more roads
which is why we’ve invested an additional £8 million to address potholes and drainage concerns across Staffordshire
on top of the £50 million we’ve allocated for highway maintenance and improvements over the next three years."

“Healthcare is a sector we’ve heavily invested in to ensure we’re delivering buildings that align with evolving operational requirements and integrate the lactest technologies

Plans to improve and enhance leisure amenities in Cheadle will include refurbishing the existing leisure centre, Staffordshire Moorlands District Council has announced.
Investing in leisure amenities remains a priority for the Council following the recent unsuccessful bid for Levelling Up funding for a new leisure centre.
To move plans forward, the Council is now looking at:
Councillor Mark Deaville, Deputy Leader and Cabinet member for Sport and Leisure, said: “We are prioritising improving the sports and leisure facilities in Cheadle which was one of the key things people told us they wanted in recent public consultations on regenerating the town.
“We were, of course, disappointed that our recent bid for Levelling Up funding for a new leisure centre was unsuccessful but we remain to committed to providing the facilities people deserve. In fact, I am even more determined to deliver these sport and leisure improvements for the people of Cheadle and the surrounding area.
“That includes looking at plans to refurbish the existing leisure centre to deliver the practical benefits that customers and user groups need in consultation with the local sports council and other stakeholders.
“These improved amenities will add to the overall sports and leisure provision in and around Cheadle and will, I hope, send a clear message to the local community that they won’t be left behind.”
This comes shortly after the Council announced a £140,000 investment in better changing facilities and a refurbished bowling pavilion at Tean Road Recreation Ground.
It follows the delivery of a number of projects at the Cheadle site in recent years – including new toddler play areas, an improved and extended skate park, a new multi-use games area and tennis courts – which have proved popular with the community and encouraged wider use of the recreation ground by young people and families.

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council has given the green light for a new ALDI store in Cheadle.
The plans went before the SMDC Planning Committee today (Thursday 28th March) and were approved by a vote of the committee.
A new store, car park and associated landscaping will be built on the former IAE site in Cheadle following their application submitted in 2022.
The German food-retail giant’s newest Moorlands store will be open 7 days a week and it’s believed will create up to 40 new jobs. This means there will be an ALDI supermarket in all 3 of the Moorlands main towns. Biddulph and Leek stores have been open for some time.
The plans for the store were described by ALDI;
Work will start with demolition of existing buildings on the site:

Michael Mulhern named one change to his side that beat Leeds United
with Becky Ferguson unavailable she was replaced with Jess Mett up top.
both teams struggled to get a hold on the game and adapt to the conditions on the day.
There was little goalmouth aciton in the first halfd
but the best chance from open play went Boro's way
as they played some slick combination passes before Millie Bell had her shot blocked
From the following corner Boro had the ball in the back of the net as Armani Maxwell whipped the ball straight in with her left foot but as Boro celebrated the referee ruled out the goal
seemingly for a foul on the Cheadle 'keeper.
Boro continued their spell of confidence as Millie Bell delivered a great ball into the box where Lauren Robson was waiting
but she couldn't steer it on target.
After that Boro had to resist some Cheadle spells
as they attempted to get the ball into the Boro area
but Laura Wareham was ready for what she faced and helped Boro see the spell out.
On the brink of half-time Boro were forced into a change as Bell suffered an injury
At half-time Grace Boyes was also forced off due to an injury
The second half was very much the same as the first as both team struggled to get into a rhythm with the stop-start nature of the game
Robson did have a good chance on goal go begging
as she drove into the box with some clever footwork but the shot was blocked
The subsequent corner saw a swarm of Boro bodies steer the ball on target forcing a good save from the Cheadle 'keeper
Turnbull delivered a great ball minutes later and found Georgia Gibson who fired her header off the woodwork
The ball was loose and there to be won by Maxwell
but she came in late and was shown a second yellow card and sent Boro down to ten
bringing on Kacie Elson for her debut in change for Lauren Robson
Boro were penning Chealde back and looking for the goal that would surely win it
but they couldn't get the goal they deserved and the game ended goalless

Leeds United Women fell to a narrow defeat at the hands of Cheadle Town in the FA WNL Division One North
despite Jess Rousseau’s superb strike in the first half
with both sides working early opportunities as they looked to break the deadlock
A long pass down the line from Cheadle’s Sophie John saw striker Rachael Dunlop set off in pursuit within minutes
crossing for the onrushing Imogen Porteous-Williams
but fine defending from Ellie Dobson allowed the Whites to clear their lines
playing their way to the edge of the Stingers’ area before a powerful Amy Woodruff effort cannoned off a red shirt and away from danger
on her first start for United between the posts
making a sublime sprawling save to deny Jessica Gillin at the back post
with Porteous-Williams then firing over the bar as the visitors threatened once more
initially making a great intervention to stop Porteous-Williams’ close-range effort but
the ball fell fortuitously for the forward to bundle home at the second attempt
midfielder Sarah Danby rifled an arrowed free kick towards goal
however it sailed narrowly over Emma Bradley’s crossbar
A flurry of corners then ended with an audacious
long-range effort from Darcie Greene stinging the palms of the busy stopper
the Whites created a great opportunity when Drew Greene played Woodruff through on goal with an intricately threaded pass
The striker raced into the area and forced a sublime diving save from Bradley
The ball cannoned back off the forward and trickled towards goal
but the retreating Natsha Shepley agonisingly hacked clear off the line
Cheadle would have extended their lead if not for a magnificent intervention from Oates
diving to her left to grab a Porteous-Williams effort that looked destined to find the back of the net
And how Wood’s side would reap the rewards within minutes
twisting and turning her way into the area before drilling a superb low strike beyond Bradley and into the bottom corner
HALF TIME: Leeds United Women 1-1 Cheadle Town
Both sides emerged for the second half unchanged
starting brightly in the hunt for an important three points in the race for promotion
The Whites looked dangerous particularly down the right
playing some intricate one-touch football; a Woodruff pass sent Drew Greene through but the versatile attacker was denied by Bradley
with the assistant’s offside flag raised regardless
end-to-end and often frantic affair in Garforth
Porteous-Williams would have had a sight of goal if not for fine positioning from Shauna Legge allowing the United defender to clear
Oates’ impressive debut then saw the goalkeeper scamper across the face of goal to get down well to gather Plant’s goalbound effort from a narrow angle
The keeper was called into action on the hour mark
The winger found space at the back post and struck powerfully towards the bottom corner
a first change from the bench saw creative midfielder Kath Smith introduced into the action
replacing the hard-working Danby in the engine room
The visitors were beginning to enjoy long spells of possession though and threatened once more when Porteous-Williams capitalised on a mistake and found Dunlop in space but Oates
dived to punch an effort from the edge of the area away
Leeds were quick to throw bodies forward in search of a late winner whenever they won the ball
Rousseau and Drew Greene combined well down the left and the latter raced into the area but
under pressure from a number of red shirts
was unable to fashion a shooting opportunity
Cheadle themselves would retake the lead five minutes from time
when Dunlop was well placed to bundle into the corner from Porteous-Williams’ pass inside the area
The hosts gave everything in search of an equaliser but were unable to restore parity before Jessica Knapp’s full-time whistle sounded
FULL TIME: Leeds United Women 1-2 Cheadle Town

“I feel a bit annoyed at my own players to be honest, because I don’t think Cheadle have really bothered us, other than set-pieces, in the entire 90 minutes. I don’t think we created a massive amount either but I don’t think they created an open play chance.
“I thought we were the side that were trying to play football, and looked more in control in and out of possession.
“I am disappointed that we have had three gilt-edged chances ourselves from set-pieces, free headers on all of them, and we have missed the target on every single one.”

A plan put forward by Bloor Homes for new homes in Cheadle has been rejected by Moorlands planners
Bloor homes put forward a proposal for new homes on land east of Froghall Road
Residents and councillors raised concerns about the development which was put to the planning committee of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council at their meeting today (Thursday 28th March)
The committee voted today to deny permission for the scheme
A number of views were considered at the meeting
“Cheadle Town Council have held meetings with Kingsley Parish Council in respect of the proposed development submitted by Bloor Homes
We fully endorse the planning objections submitted by Kingsley Parish Council at this time
and submit that the principal objection to this Application centres round its locational unsuitability and the fact that this land has never been identified within the Local Plan for the area
There are also a number of additional planning considerations
such as the inadequacy of the road structure and the lack of existing infrastructure in the town
and whilst these are not deemed as a material planning consideration for objection
they are certainly a very important consideration for the residents within the North East Ward
Cheadle Town Council will continue to monitor the progress of this Application alongside our colleagues in Kingsley.”

Councillors did not hold back as they threw out Lidl's plans
Stockport Council has knocked back plans for a store in Cheadle Heath
saying the scheme “fails to provide a suitable quality appearance and establish a strong sense of place”
Plans submitted via agent Rapleys sought permission for a 20,600 sq ft Lidl on two acres off Stockport Road at Cheadle Heath Works
Councillors raised concerns about congestion at already pressured junctions
and questioned the necessity of a supermarket on the site
adding a supermarket on that road on top of everything else would be a disaster
and it is used for housing because that’s what we really need.”
added: “I feel like there’s a huge amount of local resident fear and anxiety around this.”
The well-attended Cheadle Heath area committee unanimously rejected the plans that would have also seen a 102-space car park built on the site
A large aspect of the controversy were allegations of Lidl’s “mischief” after the chain sent out flyers independently promoting the scheme to residents
Lidl first lodged its planning application for the store in February 2023
Designs for the store were drawn up by HTC Architects
use the reference number DC/087761 in Stockport’s planning portal
Appeal with costs against the Council again
I would be willing to bet a lot of money that if someone does propose housing on the site they won’t like that either
With a bit of imagination Lidl could retain some or all of the attractive ‘works’ building façade and incorporate it in to the new store design
then why not have underground parking so some land at the back could be used for housing facing Nursery Lane
It is a bit disappointing that Aldi and Lidl don’t have more urbanism friendly standard designs
As someone who lives behind the planned site
There is a new Lidil on Councillor Lane (2mins away) and an Aldi 30 seconds down the street
What was this proposed supermarket solving
More housing and better traffic infrastructure is needed in cheadle
Why not put some flats on top of the store – get better use of the land
Lidl have shown no regard for the concerns of residents and they are not welcome in Cheadle Heath
Aldi and Teco express in close proximity of the site
we don’t need a 4th being Lidl plus there is a lidl about a mile away
Hopefully the historic Deanprint building can be repurposed rather than yet more housing
Not a helpful suggestion from Mr Mellor who’s recent track record includes installing an open cubicle for shoppers to sit in on Cheadle High Street now scrapped as the only thing to go in it was litter
Also blocking off roads on my housing estate to prevent driving from one side to the other
Can’t wait for the next good idea he comes up with
Lidl own the site so if you think they are not going to build a store think again nimbys
as for housing yhat will create many more car movements than lidl
Great to see in Stockport we aren’t passives in the ridiculous supermarket wars in this country
They’re throwing them in with the least amount of effort and trying to use their clout to push them through
Unsuitable site and hope they offload the land to SMBC for some affordable housing
It’s not NIMBYism to want homes instead of a supermarket (when there are three others within spitting distance)
The main problem is the traffic congestion
it is a nightmare now and the so-called plans put forward are totally inadequate
This plan is making what is already awful into a nightmare!
I’d go as far to say that the planners of this development have lost the plot in their traffic plan!
just telling it as I see it – literally!!
I think the comments about it being disgusting are a bit far and Lidl are entitled to persuade people
A lot from other commenters here about NIMBYs which is such a lazy argument
According to these people it’s never wrong to build anything
In some countries they have proper planning laws where there is actually a plan
Here it’s just a free for all to developers making minging buildings
It’s not about whether Stockport is special or ‘like Belgravia’
But to me it is common sense of most people don’t want something to say no
Especially if the need is basically already met
Lots of city centre types don’t understand that people move to places like Stockport because they like green space
there’s no wrong or right in this and we need to build
But please be considerate of why many people might have genuine reasons for not wanting developments
just as there are necessary reasons why they must go somewhere
Reddish was supposed to have an unwanted Lidl at tha junction of Longford Road West and Gorton Road another busy junction in an urban traffic corridor which makes it a health ha@ard already
No one in the council appears to have any interest I this long-standing impasse
one of the existing supermarkets in the area would have shut down
There is nowhere near enough customers for that many stores
I’m a Cheadle Heath resident and was in favour of this development.A housing estate will not mitigate traffic flow and congestion and the eyesore factory that still sits boarded up on the a busy main road, what is the point behind that
or am I too disgusting to have my own point of view.I know which party won’t be getting my vote next time around
With the neighbouring Tesco and roundabout leading to the M60
a Lidl would cause traffic chaos no matter what the highway engineers say
The front elevation of the store would be typically bland and plastered with adverts just like all Lidl stores
or just or exploitative rhetoric by the Councillors
It’s a supermarket like hundreds of others across the region in similar locations
brownfield in a suburb of a growing region
Do not need another supermarket already got enough well done Stockport Council
Do we really need more housing It’s well known the population is falling
Affordable housing is far better use for the site than another supermarket
The borough claims it has a “disproportionately high number of HMOs” and is to pursuing the introduction of measures to wrestle back control
The housing association is working with main contractor Caddick to build 69 social rent homes for over 55s and a GP surgery on 2.5 acres of disused land on Arrow Street in Broughton

Put in a solid display at the back. Probably deserving of a clean sheet.
Booked for clattering into a Cheadle forward that unfortunately led to the Cheadle opener. Showed real perseverance in a tough and physical battle.
Casually shrugged off Porteous-Williams, forcing the Cheadle forward’s shot to go way wide of the mark.
Struck a low effort that had to be pushed away from the bottom corner in the first half. Provided plenty of running on Town’s left, prioritising her defensive duties, whilst getting forward when suitable.
On the right flank but would come infield when Fletcher went on the overlap. Looked to have the beating of her opposite full-back at points but struggled to deliver into the box.
Put a great ball into the box in the final moments but Tiripke nodded over the bar. Put loads of work in but just couldn’t quite get a hold of the ball in the midfield.
The deeper of the midfield duo. Played almost as a quarterback if you like, with the game completely in front of her, she was playing short and long passes efficiently, with a fantastic weight of pass.
Town attempted to get her in behind, but would be lacking supporting runs, forcing her to try and work the chance herself. Got her head to a number of Mallin corners but unfortunately flicked them just wide of the far post.
Delivered some cracking set-pieces into the box but Town just couldn’t capitalise. Dropped deeper to get involved in the play. Replaced in the final 10 minutes.
Another one who had to drop deeper in order to remain active. Little in terms of action in the box.
Molly Firth (for Mallin 84) - Entered the field for Town’s last push. 6
Ashley Tiripke (for Jones 84) - Came closest for Town but headed over the bar at the back stick. 6

has announced its quarterly results for the three months ended December 31
The quarter saw the group’s loan book reach a new high of £7.7 billion
with average monthly lending also up to £283.2 million
Despite some increase in arrears in some segments
this is slowing across the majority of products
Other operational highlights including two promotions of Chris Adams to CFO
and John Barker to CEO of Personal Finance
while Richard Rowntree also commenced in his role as Group CEO
The business was also named ‘Best Newcomer’ in the Investors in People Award 2024
and was Short-listed for ‘RMBS Issuer of the Year’ and ‘Specialist RMBS Issuer of the Year’ by Global Capital European Securitisation awards
“I am pleased to report another strong performance during the quarter
reflecting the unique strengths of Together
I have been impressed by the commitment and dedication of the team and everything I have seen has confirmed what attracted me to this market leading business
we grew the loan book to a new high of £7.7bn
while delivering an attractive net interest margin of 5.4% and increasing net interest income by 12.6%
underlying profit before tax by 14.8% and cash receipts by 29.8% compared with the quarter to December 2023
We also further strengthened and diversified our funding
upsizing our LABS bridging facility to £1bn in November
when we successfully separated our CABS 2 facility into two revolving warehouses to support our first and second charge RMBS programmes and
we successfully issued our first RMBS of 2025
the UK economy is expected to perform better in 2025
driven by higher consumer and government spending and a continued reduction in interest rates
although the pace at which rates fall may be limited by persistent inflation
With long-term structural trends including changing employment patterns
a rise in multiple incomes and a continued lack of funding for SMEs supporting an increase in customers looking to specialist lenders for solutions
we will continue to be there to help people realise their ambitions as we have for the last 50 years.”

Service Graphics is relocating its Cestrian and Image Group operations to Skelmersdale after the landlord decided to terminate the lease on its Cheadle site
Large-format specialist Service Graphics is owned by Grenadier Holdings (formerly Paragon Group) and is part of its Graphic Services division
Service Graphics acquired the business and assets of Cestrian in November 2023, as PFI Group unravelled
In January this year there was a change of ownership at the Cheadle site
The new owners intend to operate their own business from the site and served notice to terminate the lease
In response Service Graphics has secured additional space at Skelmersdale
which it said would more than double the site’s operational footprint
Managing director Mike Holyoake commented: “We have long held the ambition to expand and further invest in our operations at Skelmersdale
While the sale of the Cheadle site was unexpected
it presents an opportunity to accelerate our longer-term plan for a central production hub in Skelmersdale.”
48 staff work across Cestrian and Image Group. The move will result in a “small number” of redundancies
which Service Graphics said it had tried to mitigate with opportunities to relocate to Skelmersdale
or take up alternative positions within the wider group
Operations director Stephen Morgan said detailed planning for the transition was underway
we are fortunate to have significant production capabilities in Glasgow
we will maintain uninterrupted production as we relocate equipment and personnel to the new unit in Skelmersdale,” he explained
The new Skelmersdale facility is expected to be fully operational by the end of March
with operations at Cheadle winding down over the next few weeks
Group sales director Tristan Shaun added: “For many years
Skelmersdale has been a key production hub for our business
renowned for delivering high-quality large-format print for global brands
“It makes perfect sense to build on the expertise of that team and integrate the Cheadle operations into Skelmersdale.”
Service Graphics remains on the lookout for suitable premises in the Greater Manchester area for its document printing business
as well as to maintain a presence there for the Image Group business
runs an array of wide-format kit including Durst

The female officer was hit by the car while responding to reports of people acting suspiciously inside a vehicle at Sainsbury's in Cheadle, Stockport.
She was taken to hospital for treatment for her injuries, which are not said to be life-threatening, and has since been discharged to recover at home.
Harvey Bell, 19, who was arrested at the scene, has now been charged with assault, dangerous driving and possession of a class B drug.
The teenager, of Bennett Drive, Knutsford, Cheshire has been remanded to appear at Manchester & Salford Magistrates Court on Tuesday 28 January.
Superintendent Rick Arthern, of our Stockport District, said: “This was a truly terrifying incident for a frontline officer to go through, so I am delighted to secure these charges, which show that assaults on our officers are completely unacceptable.
“The officer is at home recovering and as the hardworking dedicated officer she is, she wants to return as soon as possible to protect her community.
“The vehicle used to run the officer over remains outstanding and we are asking for any information to assist in locating the vehicle.

Moorlands Police have arrested a man on suspicion of rape after launching an investigation in Cheadle.
Shortly after 4am on Friday morning officers received a report that a woman had been raped at an address in the area.
She is being supported by specially trained officers.
A 53-year-old man, from Cheadle, was arrested.
He has been questioned in custody and has since been released on conditional police bail while enquiries continue.
Michael Mulhern's first line-up of the season had two changes from the final pre-season game
bringing in Ruby Cook and Millie Bell to replace Laura Wareham and Emma Foster
and Abby Towers missing out due to suspension.
pinning Cheadle deep in their own half with some good channel balls by Bell and Grace Boyes aimed at Jess Mett.
on one occasion forcing them all the way back into their 18-yard box and subsequently clearing for a throw-in.
The newly promoted side continued to falter to Boro's press
Mett soon carved out a chance for herself thanks to her off-the-ball work
which was saved well by the Cheadle 'keeper.
Ending last season in fine scoring form it had to be Mett to get Boro's first goal of the season
receiving the ball from a throw-in before turning onto her right foot and unleashing a fantastic curled effort into the back of the net.
but Ellen Packham and Bell coolly dealt with the deliveries into the area
Mett once again found herself wide of the box on her favoured right foot and attempted a similar effort to the one that put Boro ahead
only to be denied by a good block by a blue shirt.
Lauren Robson's inch-perfect passing was a delight for Boro's forwards Armani Maxwell and Mett
Boro's confidence grew - on top of possession and playing fantastic football at times - but they couldn't finish Cheadle off with a goal to double the lead before the whistle blew.
The first chance was carved out by Ellen Turnbull after some good link-up with Giles to put a wicked ball into the box that no-one could apply the finishing touch to
ripping a low shot that was saved well by the 'keeper
Maxwell latched onto the rebound but couldn't make anything of the scraps.
Mett and Robson's link-up continued resulting in another chance for Boro's number 10
this time hitting a shot over the bar.
Cook didn't waste her first start since April
making two great saves to keep Boro's lead intact
tipping one over her bar and stopping another with a strong right hand
Despite dominating the game Boro struggled to double their lead in the second half
with Turnbull providing great chances again and again
Cheadle's attempted to mount a comeback as the game ebbed on but Boro saw off their attempts and came out the other side to claim a well-deserved three points to start their season off
