Hednesford Town secured promotion to the seventh tier of English football following a comfortable 2-0 victory over Congleton Town in front of nearly 5,000 spectators at Keys Park Goals from Jake Jervis and Jack Bearne were enough for the hosts who were rarely troubled by their opponents as the Pitmen’s class and experience shone through A total of 4,701 supporters ensured the afternoon’s game was played in front of a record attendance at Keys Park breaking the previous record of 4,412 vs FC United of Manchester in the EvoStik League Premier Division play-off final in 2013 Gavin Hurren named the same side that overpowered Vauxhall Motors 3-1 in the semi-final four days previously and his side were the quickest out of the blocks after a slightly delayed kick off who scored the second goal in Tuesday's victory earned his side a penalty after just eight minutes after he was fouled by Congleton left back Carl Dickinson McHale picked himself to take the spot kick only to see it saved smartly by Travis Ziglam down to his left-hand side Injury to Bears striker Max McCarthy caused a lengthy delay to proceedings and after a blistering opening 10 minutes the stop-start nature of the first half did little to help either side McHale continued to threaten for the hosts and took aim with two efforts from range that did not miss the mark by much the game sparked back into life in the fifth minute of stoppage time as the visitors paid the penalty once again This time it was Ziglam who turned from hero to villain felling Jervis in the area after his poor clearance was intercepted by the Hednesford forward The 33-year-old stepped up to take the kick he had won and powered the ball confidently down the middle to send the Pitmen into half time ahead After the restart the visitors were almost gifted an equaliser when Elliott Johnson’s back pass wrongfooted Pitmen keeper Tony Breeden who did just enough to recover and prevent the ball rolling into an empty net The hosts were not short on chances to extend their lead Dan Trickett-Smith and substitute Nathan Blissett were all denied by some last-ditch defending from Congleton Trickett-Smith went close again moments later after a Hednesford counter attack With ten minutes to play the Bears were reduced to 10 men when captain Peter Williams was shown a second yellow card for a late challenge And with seconds left to play substitute Jack Bearne put the icing on the cake with a calm finish to secure Hednesford Town promotion back to the seventh tier of English football Nearly 5,000 spectators turned up at Keys Park to supporters sat on the edge of their seats as the afternoon game kicked off, with the ground recording a record attendance, thrashing their previous record of 4,412 when Hednesford Town faced FC United of Manchester in 2013 While for some the monumental day was nothing but tears and sadness with thousands of smiling faces and roaring cheers being seen and heard in the stands over the 90-minute play-off See our 21 images showing the emotions - and the ups and downs - that fans and players faced during the day: Hednesford Town achieved promotion from the Northern Premier League West Division with a convincing 2-0 win over Congleton Town in front of a Keys Park record of 4701 spectators Manager Gavin Hurren named the same side that defeated Vauxhall Mottors in the semi-final and it was the Pitmen who made the strongest start to the game After only eight minutes Congleton left back Carl Dickinson brought down Dom McHale in the area to give the home side an early penalty guessed correctly and made a low save to his left from McHale’s spot kick A nasty injury to Congleton’s number nine Max McCarthy slowed down the pace of the half and the game descended into a rather scrappy affair albeit with Hednesford largely in control of proceedings McHale had a couple of long range efforts go narrowly wide of the mark as the Pitmen went closest to opening the scoring Deep into first half stoppage time McHale intercepted a back pass and was brought down by Ziglam for the Pitmen’s second penalty of the afternoon this time Jake Jervis made no mistake and blasted the ball down the middle to give Hednesford a deserved half time lead A mix up at the back for the Pitmen early in the second half almost let Congleton back into the game when skipper Elliot Johnson’s back pass wrong footed Tony Breeden who was able to do just enough to scramble the ball away under pressure from the visiting front line The Pitmen continued to create chances without finding the all important second goal with Jervis Dan Trickett-Smith and substitute Nathan Blissett all denied by some solid defending from Congleton Trickett-Smith saw a goal bound effort tipped over the bar by Ziglam Peter Williams was dismissed for the visitors following a second yellow card for a foul on Trickett-Smith In the closing moments of the game Blissett headed the ball from midfield into the path of fellow substitute Jack Bearne who raced towards goal and calmly slotted the ball past Ziglam to secure the win and promotion After the game Gavin Hurren said; “It has been an amazing journey and we’ve managed to bring back the fun and togetherness This is a highlight for me and I’m immensely proud of everyone.” Become a member of our online community and get tickets to upcoming matches or sports events faster Website by toucan crossing and improved junction lay-out has recently been completed on Park Lane This location was identified as a gap in the provision on a priority route to the town centre for pedestrians and cyclists in Congleton’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) in 2021 there was no direct and safe crossing point on Park Lane Previous improvements had been made to the signage dropped kerbs and access controls along the wider route towards the town centre The crossing completes this section of the route chair of Cheshire East Council’s highways and transport committee said: “We are extremely grateful to the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund for enabling us to deliver this excellent scheme I would also like to thank residents and road users for their patience while this project has been in progress I am delighted to see the very positive outcome of these works Cheshire East Council’s walking and cycling member champion said: “This scheme was identified in Congleton’s LCWIP as a key priority route It provides a better link to the existing signed cycle route towards the town centre.  “The bus stop and layby have been improved to enable the safe use of the crossing while the junction at Ayrshire Way has also been updated to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety I am very grateful to all the officers who have worked tirelessly on this project to bring it to fruition.” Cheshire East Council is committed to equality and diversity © Cheshire East Council Sign our campaign for a grant funding review with McCarthy Stone's retirement complex in the access point for rail plant opposite the residential development site adding that it would “need to get a view whether this is likely to cause problems as there could be complaints regarding rail maintenance activities” and some minor points from Congleton Town Council – a body that spoke at the meeting noting its approval of how early-stage comments had been taken on board – the plans went down well at committee Due to changes in housing need calculations Cheshire East has slid from a position of being able to demonstrate a five-year supply – something it has striven for constantly over the years – to not being able to do so at present the key matter on this application was whether any other material considerations could outweigh the positive land use officers pointed out that there Despite not being in action the Bears were confirmed as champions as Highgate United defeated Lichfield City meaning the South Staffordshire side could no longer catch the Bears at the top of the table The midweek sport show in association with Leek Building Society was on air when the news came through of Congleton’s success and the Bears manager Richard Duffy very kindly joined us on the show to give us his reaction to winning the league You can hear Duffy speaking to presenter James Marsh and our reporter Richard Scott about the success It was a top of the table clash at Keys Park as third placed Hednesford Town faced fourth placed Congleton Town.  The game was a very cagey affair in the opening stages both sides traded corners and freekicks without creating any obvious clear cut opportunities It took until the 28th  minute for the first opening of the game when Congleton keeper Craig Ellison made a finger-tipped save from Nathan Blissett’s header In reply George Sankey shot wide for the visitors before Dominic McHale had a good shout for a penalty for the hosts In the 39th minute Chris Hussey took a freekick short to Dan Trickett-Smith whose shot was just inches wide Trickett-Smith sent a corner into the far post for Blissett to head home The second half began with both Blissett and half time substitute Jack Bearne seeing shots blocked as the Pitmen looked to extend their league Peter Williams fired high and wide for Congleton before the visitors were reduced to ten men after Owen Morris received a second booking for a foul on McHale Hussey took the resulting freekick and set up Trickett-Smith whose effort was blocked at the near post Bearne did well to play a dangerous ball into the area for Trickett-Smith who this time put his effort narrowly wide McHale went closest to doubling the lead forcing a good save from Ellison at the near post Ellison was on hand again to collect a Trickett-Smith cross while under pressure from Blissett The game drifted into added time with the Pitmen making the most of their numerical advantage and limiting Congleton’s attacking options effectively The Pitmen held strong to claim all three points and strengthen their place in the play-offs who can’t be named for legal reasons pleaded guilty to wounding without intent at an earlier hearing He appeared at Cheshire Youth Court on Monday 14 April to be sentenced and was given a 12-month referral order and a restraining order not to contact the victim The court heard how on the evening of Friday 17 January the boy got into an altercation with another boy in West Heath near Tesco At some point the 15-year-old victim was stabbed in the back causing a serious injury which needed hospital treatment Despite best efforts the knife was never recovered The defendant denied stabbing him but the wound left no doubt that it had been caused by a knife it was not life threatening and the victim is making a good recovery “Teenagers inflicting serious injuries with dangerous weapons is not something we’re used to hearing about in Congleton and this level of violence has shocked the community “We already educate young people about the dangers of knife crime we also enlisted an external company to deliver knife crime prevention education to every pupil supported by neighbourhood police officers “We will continue to work with our schools to ensure this type of dangerous behaviour remains a rarity for Congleton.” It’s another important promotion clash this weekend when fourth placed Congleton Town visit Keys Park to play third placed Hednesford Town on Saturday 1st March The Pitmen are undefeated in their last 10 league games winning seven and drawing three while The Bears have won five of their last ten drawing just one but losing four including their last three at home to Witton Albion and Atherton Collieries and away at Avro Their home form has the edge over their away results as they have picked up 32 points at the Cleric Stadium from ten wins two draws and four defeats compared to 24 on their travels from seven wins The losses coming against Runcorn Linnets (0-1) Widnes (1-5) along with the aforementioned 2-3 reversal at Avro This gives them a grand total of 56 points from 32 matches with a GD of +13 while  Hednesford have one more point from the same number of games with a GD of +27 Both sides have shared the goals around this season Hednesford’s leading league scorers are Manny Duku Dom McHale and Dan Trickett-Smith who are all on ten followed by Jack Bearne on nine while for Congleton Max McCarthy has 14 Daniel Needham 12 with Peter Williams and George Sankey both on ten It was Williams’ penalty that separated the sides back on Bonfire Night when Congleton won 1-0 in Cheshire Former Pitman David Parton was in goal for The Bears that night and has made 29 appearances for the club this season although he hasn’t featured since Boxing Day He played 14 times for Hednesford in the 2015/16 National League North relegation season Once again manager Gavin Hurren is expecting another hard game “Congleton have been excellent all season and their manager deserves a lot of credit for the job he’s done Several first teamers played part of the Development Squad’s 8-0 win over Paget Rangers on Tuesday night with Zidan Sutherland (3) Jacob Gwilt and Josh Endall all scoring and Abdulrasaq Aalamu-Tajudeen and Kory Roberts also getting some much needed time on the pitch Sion Spence and Elliott Johnson should be available but long term absentees Rob Stevenson and Jack Rose will be missing along with Omar Holness and Ollie Harrison who begins a two match suspension Kick off on Saturday is at the usual time of 3pm with gates opening at 12.30pm free for U10s but all under 16s must be accompanied by a paying adult Tickets can be bought via the Fanbase app or by cash/card at the appropriate turnstile Construction has begun on the retail units located just off Barn Road which cuts through the centre of the wider Viking Park site in Congleton 3,200 sq ft unit will house both a KFC and a Greggs while a detached 1,850 sq ft building will be constructed for Starbucks and plans include parking provision for up to 38 vehicles A further standalone 20,000 sq ft unit for a yet-to-be-named retailer will also be built Roe Developments is the main contractor for the project said: “It’s good to see that the roadside convenience offering is now under construction on site at Viking Park and Greggs will be a welcomed addition to the business park We anticipate all units to be open for business by the summer of 2025.” The wider scheme encompasses 55 acres and includes 175 houses currently under construction by Bloor Homes Viking Park could provide more than 36,000 sq ft of office facilities Isn’t it time Congleton had more shops that actually sell products to buy other than food and drink ie clothes Congleton is full of places to eat or get a haircut (if you are male) I think I counted at least 7 barbers but no descant shops to buy clothes or anything else dentists and schools to accommodate the amount of people moving into all these new houses that are being built EVERYWHERE in Congleton What about the much needed schools and clinical centre??? no sign of new education or health facilities Surely this should have been a condition along side permission to erect all the houses and Junk/ultra processed food is the future unfortunately such units could easily be located in a town centre rather than an out-of-centre location towns are changing up and down the country In Congleton town centre there are still places to buy mens clothes Town centres are also changing for a more social experience rather than shopping now Congleton has a thriving town centre economy for food and drink which with more places due to open in the near future will bring more footfall and so shops will want a piece of that footfall so you may see more clothing and other boutique shops to follow we already have plenty of small shops in town What about electrical outlets eg white goods etc I would help the town centre if they didn’t charge so much rent that’s what has killed Congleton town centre We want decent shops not junk food and high caffeine coffee outlets Will be like barracks mill in macc a white elephant that killed the town centre and the cut and paste retail offers …..look theres an Aldi too.Welcome to Anytown Make the larger unit multi story and get Primark in there cinema/bowling 😊 looking forward to the development either way hope Starbucks is 24hr like wolstanton 🤞🏼 As a resident of congleton all my life I couldn’t get my son into any of the schools in my catchment area and it costs me £30 a week and an hours journey to get him to a primary school at the other end of town Yet people who moved here last year with their kids filled the local schools 🙄Dr’s appointments are hard to come by Where I welcome a new KFC together with Starbucks and Greggs the owners of Viking Way need to clear the pathways around the tyre retailer The path is split between a cycle and a pedestrian zone but the undergrowth forces pedestrians to walk on the cycle way and could lead to a serious accident We need more doctors dentist pharmacy’s clothing shops community work shops parks or maybe even a Cinema or bowling etc not more shops that already exist in the town for example Costa greggs aldi Tesco Morrisons barbers charity shops and kebab houses!! still charging for parking in the town centre The developer is seeking outline consent for a residential scheme on the 13.5-acre site at Clive Hall Farm in Winsford For best viewing experience of this website Please enter a place name in the search bar Environment Agency Updated: 14:32 (UTC+1) on Tue 6 May 2025 Fine and settled under the influence of high pressure Chilly but bright to start with plenty of sunny spells through the morning Turning cloudier from the east during the afternoon Rather cloudy into the evening but dry for most but not feeling as chilly as recent nights with most places remaining frost free Another widely dry and settled day with a few sunny spells breaking through largely cloudy skies and feeling warm with temperatures slightly above the early-May average The remainder of the week will see high pressure dominating It will stay dry with plenty of sunny spells Breezy at times but temperatures will be on the rise Dry across the vast majority of the UK with clear or sunny spells but also some patchy cloud Cloud will likely thicken across the far north and northwest during the weekend with some outbreaks of rain for a time There is also a small risk of some heavy showers in the far south or southwest high pressure will be dominant across the UK This will bring predominantly fine and dry weather for the majority of places Temperatures are likely to be slightly above normal for the time of year although there is a chance of some cold nights Fairly typical weather for the time of year is most likely through this period fine and dry weather is more likely to dominate although this will be interspersed with occasional spells of rain and showers with a risk of heavy rain and thunderstorms in places temperatures will most likely be near to or slightly above average Atherton Collieries will aim to extend their unbeaten stretch to four matches as they make the trip to take on Congleton Town on Saturday.  The Colls played out a 1-1 draw with Stafford Rangers last time out with that solid point coming after impressive winning displays against Hanley Town and Widnes.  Securing seven points from the last nine available means Michael Clegg’s men remain in the relegation zone on goal difference alone and have kept pace with what has become an increasingly congested group in the bottom half of the Northern Premier League Division One West.  just six points separate the Stripes (currently 19th) from Newcastle Town in 12th; the same margin as the gap between the former and the team immediately below them in Wythenshawe.  A third win in four could represent a significant gain in the battle for survival though securing that outcome is unlikely to prove straightforward away at a side with their attention firmly fixed on matters at the other end of the table.  Congleton enter the weekend sat third in the standings with their overall record of 56 points from 31 matches played (amassed through 17 wins five draws and nine defeats) leaving them looking well poised to (at least) secure a spot in the play-offs come the end of the season.  Saturday’s hosts also hold the bragging rights between these two sides having claimed a dramatic late victory at the Dreams2Reality Stadium in November’s reverse fixture netting in the 87th and 93rd minute to ultimately triumph 4-3.  That healthy position in the top five has gotten slightly less comfortable in recent weeks with the Bears having suffered back-to-back losses to Avro and Witton Albion in their last two outings And with Colls’ most recent away day ending in the aforementioned scalp of leaders Widnes there is immediate evidence of their ability to upset the league table when at their best For those looking to cheer on the lads as they look to secure three more potentially crucial points travel will be running from the Dreams2Reality Stadium at 11:45am (priced at £15 per seat) and the Supporters’ Club should be contacted regarding any remaining availability.  match tickets for this weekend’s game are priced as follows:  Atherton Collieries are pleased to confirm our participation and support for the 2025 ‘March of the Day’ Grassroots Football Tour Atherton Collieries will look to sign off the 2024/25 season in style on Saturday when they travel to face Witton Albion in their final outing The Stripes put in a tremendous last thirty minute stint to deservedly take a share of the spoils Two goals from Tom Hassell saw Alsager Town claim their first win (a 2-1 victory) of pre-season 2023 as they welcome Midlands Football League new boys Congleton Town to Wood Park The Bullets sit a level below the Bears in the non-league system but you wouldn’t have known it as they dominated the first half with both Hassell and Jack Woolley brother of Kidsgrove’s new signing Joe Woolley going close with long-range efforts hoping to catch Dave Parton out they were unable to do so with their chances flying just over the crossbar It didn’t matter mind you for the hosts as they took the lead just before the half-time whistle when a well-worked set piece routine found Hassell at the back post who leapt like a salmon to head the ball past Parton At half-time Bears manager Richard Duffy brought on the Congleton cavalry with Dan Needham Marco Fregapane and Ethan Hartshorn all entering the fray and Fregapane had the first chance of the second half as he went on a lung-busting run from his right back position before curling a shot just wide of Martin Brain’s far post Even though it’s pre-season it would have been a contender for the Goal of the Season award If the first half belonged to Alsager then the second half certainly belonged to Congleton as they continued to push forward for an equaliser which finally came with 20 minutes to go the ball bounced around the area before it fell to Hartshorn who stabbed the ball past the defender on the line to bring the Bears level either team could have won the match with Congleton’s Aaron Johns going close when he burst into the area but Brain was quickly off his line to smother the effort Alsager captain Sam Latham was to hit a chance well over the crossbar the hosts were to win the match with 10 minutes to go when a lovely counterattacking move saw Luke Draysey play in a perfectly weighted cross to Hassell who made no mistake as he slotted the ball past Parton to restore Alsager’s lead Hanley Town started pre-season with a 4-0 win away at Eccleshall FC Charlie Walford and Jake Twyford gave the visitors a two-goal lead at the break before Kieran Brown grabbed himself a brace in the second half to seal the victory for Ryan Shotton’s men Leek CSOB also got their pre-season underway on Saturday with a 4-3 defeat against Abbey Hulton United has acquired 13 acres of land in Congleton for 119 new homes from clients of Ainscough Strategic Land Work will
