George Bennett gives his Walsall player ratings from their 1-0 win against Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road.
Clean sheet - Struggled with a couple of teasing deliveries under his crossbar during the first half but produced a strong near post save to repel Chris Long late on to preserve his clean sheet.
Strong - Produced a strong defensive performance and set-up the winning goal with a neat knockdown for George Hall to hook his finish into the net.
Brilliant - Looked back to his usual best. Put in a crunching challenge early on and just continued to go from strength to strength with a brilliant defensive display.
Solid - Dealt with his defensive duties expertly and came closest for Walsall in the first effort when he drove a low shot wide.
George Hall scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Crewe Alexandra but Walsall missed out on automatic promotion in heartbreaking fashion.
Hall produced the match-winning moment in the 59th-minute when he hooked a smart finish beyond the reach of Crewe Alexandra goalkeeper Filip Marschall.
Walsall were on the brink of winning promotion but Bradford City pipped them to the post with a stoppage time-minute winner against Fleetwood Town.
Crewe squandered a gilt-edged chance in the closing stages when Finley Roberts scuffed his finish straight at Tommy Simkin from point-blank range.
Over 2,500 away supporters descended on Gresty Road in the hope that Walsall could end their six-year stay in League Two by putting paid to a dismal 13-match winless run.
In his attempt to reverse that trend, Mat Sadler made three changes from the team that began their 1-0 defeat against Accrington Stanley at Bescot last weekend.
Ryan Stirk returned to the base of midfield while Jamie Jellis and Levi Amantchi were also recalled, as Oisin McEntee, Albert Adomah and Jamille Matt dropped to the bench.
Walsall started on the front-foot and looked up for the fight during the opening exchanges. David Okagbue failed to keep a pair of headers down from two deadly corner deliveries from Jamie Jellis and Harry Williams fired a tame effort into Marschall's midriff.
Crewe did fashion a half-chance when Calum Agius picked the ball up on the edge of the box but his strike was comfortably gathered by Tommy Simkin at his near post.
Nathan Asiimwe put Simkin in a spot of bother moments later with a poor headed back pass. The Walsall goalkeeper emerged and Owen Lunt went down searching for a penalty but the referee rightly waved away his claims.
Taylor Allen came closest for either side when he drove a fierce low shot wide of Marschall's right-hand post from the edge of the box.
Williams was a rock at the back and started a promising counter-attack with a crucial intervention on the right. Jellis turned his marker with a balletic spin, collecting Williams' pass with the crispest of first touches.
He charged down the right and squared for Stirk on the edge of the box. The ball was eventually worked to Hall but his effort was comfortably saved by Marschall.
Hall did have the Crewe goalkeeper at full stretch on the cusp of half-time. The Birmingham City loanee chased a lost cause inside the box and Marschall plunged to his right to tip a low strike round the post.
Amantchi was replaced by Matt at the break after an ineffectual first half but Crewe came closest to a breakthrough at the start of the second half.
Crewe worked a corner short and Conway drove a low effort through bodies from an acute angle which Liam Gordon crucially swept off the line.
Hall, who was along with Williams the best player on the bench, delivered the crucial breakthrough just before the hour-mark.
Williams launched a long throw into the penalty area which was cushioned down by Okagbue. Hall had his back to goal but hooked an inventive finish past Marschall to send the away end into raptures.
Sadler withdrew Alfie Chang and Hall during the closing stages as Walsall faced a tense battle to get over the finish-line. Crewe began to apply the pressure and Chris Long stung the palms of Simkin with a powerful shot towards the near post.
Marschall denied Williams' close-range finish with an outstretched leg but Crewe had a golden chance to equalise late on. Crewe clipped the ball into the box from the left but substitute Roberts fluffed his lines from point-blank range.
Walsall were 90 seconds away from getting the job done when the news broke that Bradford had scored a late winner against Fleetwood Town at Valley Parade in the sixth-minute of stoppage time.
Crewe (4-3-3): Marschall; Billington, O'Riordan, Knight-Lebel (Connolly 84), Conway; Lunt, Thomas (Roberts 68), Sanders; Agius, Thibaut (Bogle 43), Long (Finney 84).
Walsall (3-1-4-1-1): Simkin; Okagbue, Williams, Allen; Stirk; Asiimwe, Jellis (Adomah 90), Chang (McEntee 70), L Gordon; Hall (Lakin 78); Amantchi (Matt 46)
George Hall's 59th-minute strike put the Saddlers on the brink of a top-three finish
but rivals Bradford broke their hearts with a stoppage-time winner over Fleetwood
It means Mat Sadler's side – who blew a 12-point lead at the top of the table and had been winless in 13 matches since February 22 – will have to go through the play-offs
Walsall defender Taylor Allen went close with a thumping low drive before Hall was thwarted by Crewe goalkeeper Filip Marschall as the first half ended goalless
Hall put the visitors ahead when David Okagbue helped on a long throw and the Birmingham loanee turned to hook a volley past Marschall
Saddlers goalkeeper Tommy Simkin preserved the lead by keeping out Chris Long's powerful effort
while Harry Williams almost made the game safe with a low drive that Marschall brilliantly blocked
There was a let off at the other end as Crewe substitute Fin Roberts wasted a glorious chance when applying a tame finish to a cross from Charlie Finney
But just as Walsall felt they had rescued their promotion bid
late drama at Bradford consigned them to the play-offs

Work to transform a key area of Crewe town centre has been completed and opened up to the public earlier today (Monday 28 April) – the latest step in the town’s regeneration journey.
The former library and Civic Centre car park site has been cleared and completely revamped into new public space that features seating areas
flower beds and lighting – creating an improved and more attractive route for those walking between the Lifestyle Centre
Memorial Square and the Market Hall.
A new two-storey entrance to the Crewe Magistrates Civil and Family Courts and a new 31-space short-stay car park have also been delivered
The project is supported by funding from the Government’s Future High Streets Fund and Towns Fund
as well as funding from Cheshire East Council
The new space will eventually provide the attractive setting for one of two new facilities in Cheshire that will co-host the region’s extensive archives – construction of which started earlier this year
chair of Cheshire East Council’s economy and growth committee
said: “It is clear to see just how much this key area of the town centre has been transformed and it’s now a really welcoming and enhanced space for people to spend time or walk through
“It’s all part of our vision to provide more reasons for people to visit the town centre and to want to stay for longer
“This project is part of our wider plans to improve the route for people walking or cycling between the railway station and town centre.
“Other projects include the Southern Gateway scheme
which is nearing completion and will create a new route for people walking or cycling between High Street and the Lifestyle Centre
We also have plans for significant improvements to Mill Street.Cllr Gorman added:
“We hope the new car park will be welcomed
Once final checks have been completed over the coming weeks
four electric vehicle charging points will also be available
as is the case with the multi-storey car park
gives us the capacity so that we can free up some of our other car parks and move forward with a range of exciting development projects over the next few years.”
HMCTS North West delivery director Jane Wignall said:“We welcome the completion of the new two-storey entrance at the court
which improves the visibility of our building and creates a welcoming approach for court users while contributing to the broader regeneration of the town.”
The area of the site that runs alongside Prince Albert Street remains cordoned off as construction of the new archives centre continues
The facility – which is due to open to the public in summer 2026 – is part of the ‘Cheshire’s archives: a story shared’ project
which will give greater access to the archives
and preserve the collections for future generations.
The project is being led by both Cheshire East Council and Cheshire West and Chester Council
and a second archives centre will be based at Hoole in Chester
lead for archives at Cheshire East Council
said: “The two archive centres will make discovering local history easy and exciting and people will be able to explore collections dating back 1,000 years
personal letters and photographs and beyond
the archives bring Cheshire’s story to life
“Now that work has been completed to provide the attractive setting for the centre in Crewe
I very much look forward to seeing the building come out of the ground and to it opening up its doors to residents and visitors alike.”
Cheshire East Council is committed to equality and diversity
Tom Davies' first-half header and a late Kristian Dennis strike meant the hosts moved seven points clear of the relegation places with a game to play
extending the visitor's winless run to five matches
Crewe finished the match with nine men as Tom Lowery and Zak Williams saw red
while Tranmere's Regan Hendry was also sent off in stoppage time
The visitors started brightly and had a glorious opportunity to open the scoring after just two minutes when Connor Thomas' close-range effort was deflected wide
Alex goalkeeper Filip Marschall was called into action to deny Omari Patrick with a smart save
But he was helpless in the 22nd minute when Rovers skipper Davies rose to meet Regan Hendry's free-kick and nod the ball into the far corner from six yards
With the away side reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Tom Lowery in the 69th minute
And it was Dennis who secured the victory with three minutes remaining to ensure survival as the home fans took to the field to celebrate on the final whistle
"To collect the points we have over the past 12 games has been reward for really good preparation and performances
and when we've had setbacks we've bounced back immediately
"I hope that the supporters celebrate tonight as it's been a tough ride for them this season
"But ultimately the football club has to grow and develop
We are celebrating being third bottom of League Two
but if you want to be a successful club you have to aim your sights higher than that."

Kane Hemmings dragged a tame shot past the post and Adam Conway planted a far-post header into the arms of Craig MacGillivray as Crewe started on the front foot
But an uncharacteristic mistake by Alex keeper Filip Marschall offered MK Dons striker Hogan an easy opener in the 28th minute

Crewe started the second half on the attack and Conor Thomas had a goalbound effort blocked
Yet they were almost caught out at the back when Jonathan Leko wasted a breakaway for the visitors by delaying his pass to Hogan who was closed down quickly
Crewe kept persevering and Joel Tabiner's effort flew over via a deflection

MK Dons remained dangerous on the break and Hogan cut in from the right and hit a deflected effort just over
Tabiner went close for Crewe with a 25-yard free-kick

The last game of the season has somehow ended up being fairly meaningless for Crewe Alexandra
The Saddler’s on the other hand can come to Gresty Road a League Two side and leave a League One side
I take a look through our terrible form heading into this
as well as a detailed look at the away side
If you’d have told me in January that this fixture wouldn’t have anything riding on it for the Alex
I’d have assumed that we were already promoted and that the visitors were crowned champions some time ago
The Railwaymen’s promotion push has completely derailed though
and hasn’t ended up at the League One destination we were all dreaming of
Crewe have only mustered up one point from their last five games
and have only won once in their last eleven fixtures
It has been this tremendously poor run of form that has seen us fade away completely from the race for a playoff place and sealed our fate in League Two for next season
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what’s gone wrong this campaign and that’ll be a conversation for another piece I have planned next week
but a simple explanation could be the lack of goalscorers among the squad
The reds have only scored seven goals in the last eleven
which would barely equate to 30 goals if that form was repeated over the course of a full season
Tomorrow’s game is still an important one for both Lee Bell
Ending the season on a high and putting out a statement of what fans should expect next season is really critical
There’s been some pressure aimed at Lee Bell from fans online across recent weeks
attractive brand of football and three points to match could go down nicely to counter the discontent that is arising
it isn’t an unpopular opinion that Bell’s team have been boring to watch at many points this season
Add onto this the dramatic fall off from an automatic promotion battle to mid table mediocrity and a performance that shows us a clear standard
with less turgid football will see fans leave Gresty Road happier than they have done in recent weeks
In terms of points and league placement absolutely not
In terms of regaining faith in the team and manager
much bigger occasion for our opponents than it is for us
Walsall have made our fall in form look minuscule
The Saddlers sat 12 points ahead of us in second
and were firmly in the automatic promotion positions by 15 points after 25 games played
It seemed destined that this final game of the season could be between two sides already promoted
yet it could now see neither side going up altogether
they’ll need Bradford to drop points to secure promotion from League Two
Nathan Lowe being recalled from loan in January by Stoke City was a big dent
Lowe had scored 15 league goals for the Saddlers in the league
This still sees him as the clubs top scorer
Jamile Matt has chipped in with twelve goals and goal scoring centre back Taylor Allen has bagged 10
Walsall are still the league’s top scorers
They’ve also conceded 54 at the other end though
so fans could expect to see goals tomorrow at both ends tomorrow
Mat Sadler’s side have only averaged 44.7% possession and operate well off the ball
combined with a thin squad could be a potential reason behind their fall off in the second half of the season
Crewe can expect a hard working side that regularly create chances to throw everything at them in a final bid to put the worrying form in the second half of the season behind them and achieve a promotion that at one point looked nailed on
both us and Walsall were early title candidates and a 1-1 draw was played out at The Poundland Bescot Stadium
Omar Bogle finished a chance that came from a lovely bit of play
but Nathan Lowe’s 85th minute leveller saw the spoils shared
It was a cagey affair that felt like a big
big game with both teams scoring a great goal
Jack Powell salvaged a point in the 94th minute at home to Walsall
but the Railwaymen succumbed to a 2-0 defeat on boxing day
We actually have a reasonable record in recent years against Walsall though
having only lost twice in the previous twenty one meetings between the two sides
we have also only lost against them four times since the turn of the century
so Walsall will need to overcome a bogey side in order to have any chance at a final day promotion
I expect this to be an all or nothing fixture for Walsall
as I wouldn’t fancy them in the playoffs
out-battle us and ultimately leave Gresty Road with three points
although a part of me also has a feeling that Bradford City may lose and still be promoted tomorrow
which based on recent form would be very unlikely
Will that three points be enough for Walsall to get promoted
Crewe Alex still have a say in the promotion race
shape or form does it actually involve us anymore
Tom Boon is a lifelong Crewe Alexandra fan
The Railwaymen Podcast as well as Gab Sutton's 'EFL Debate' voicing his opinions on the football club he loves
a Crewe Alex fanpage providing content around the club
he quickly grasped just how much the club meant to him and how much he enjoyed to create content
bold and insightful reads are what you can come to expect from Boon
On previous form imo I think walsall will struggle its easier to be in playoffs than automatic promotion
then the club can decide if they want it they’ve had the chance to not be in this position
sorry but with past results I can’t imagine anything giving us first division football .no passion there
and website in this browser for the next time I comment

George Hall is hopeful that Walsall can use their final day win as momentum heading into the League Two play-offs.
The Birmingham City loanee scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road which put the Saddlers on the brink of automatic promotion.
They remained third until the final seconds when Bradford City pipped them to the post with a 96th-minute winner against Fleetwood Town at Valley Parade.
The victory at Crewe ended a 13-match winless run and Hall is eager to use the "disappointment" of missing out on the final day as fuel heading into their two-legged semi-final against Chesterfield.
He said: "Everyone is feeling the same. Disappointment but I think we gave it our all today, it just wasn't our day.
"Even though I scored, I kind of knew that it wasn't in our hands still.
