marking his first appearance at the tournament since 2015
The tournament runs from 9–25 May and will be co-hosted by Sweden and Denmark
with Stockholm set to stage the medal rounds
It marks the third time Crosby will compete at the world championship
and his first since captaining Canada to gold ten years ago in 2015
he led Canada to victory at the inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off
Crosby cements his ninth appearance on Canadian national duty across multiple formats
and Stanley Cup titles to his name — Crosby remains the only player in history to captain all three winning teams
Canada will open their world championship campaign on 10 May against Slovakia. With Crosby back in the fold, hopes are high that the maple leaf will fly atop the podium once more.

2010 marked the final day of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games
In many ways the best was saved for last when the Canadian and American men's ice hockey teams stepped to the ice to battle for the penultimate gold medal of the games
What followed was one of the most memorable Ice hockey matchups in Olympic history
Canada's Sidney Crosby rose to the occasion to live up to the sky high expectations that had been placed on him since early on in the future hall of famer's career
Mike Sullivan is out as Pittsburgh Penguins coach. The search is on for a new one. Sidney Crosby is going to Sweden to play in the World Championship
For a team that hasn’t played a game in almost three weeks
Will Sidney Crosby demand a trade now that Mike Sullivan is no longer his coach
but it’s a legitimate topic I’ll be writing about soon
who is close with Sullivan on a personal level
to say nothing of his admiration of Sullivan as a coach
is famously set in his ways and very comfortable with Sullivan as his coach
The Penguins captain is also very smart and a total professional
I’m sure he understands what Kyle Dubas is dealing with
Crosby also understands perfectly well that
the Penguins haven’t reached the playoffs in three years
He knows change is inevitable when that is the case
My advice for Dubas is to include Crosby in the coach search
Crosby and Dubas will both be representing Team Canada in Sweden for most of May
They’ll have lots of time to get together in Stockholm and talk about the Penguins’ future
But Crosby isn’t just another captain and isn’t just another great player
What aspect of Sullivan’s departure surprised you the most
he wondered to himself whether Sullivan and the Penguins were the right fit
Do you think Dubas would have taken the job as Team Canada GM at the World Championship
if he knew a coaching change for his Penguins was imminent
Sullivan and Dubas spoke on a couple of occasions after the season
There was a difference in opinion about how quickly the Penguins can and should aggressively move toward being a playoff team again
Dubas is willing to be more patient than Sullivan was
I don’t think there’s much more to it than that
Do you think the Penguins’ plan is longer than expected with the firing of Sullivan
The timeline can be a lot longer then we think
Dubas uses the word “urgent” frequently when discussing the Penguins’ return to Stanley Cup contention
And we don’t associate urgency with patience
He’s made it clear that he doesn’t just want the Penguins to be a team that settles for squeaking into the playoffs
he wants to build a team that can be special for a long time
I can see why Sullivan wanted to rush things
I guarantee you Crosby’s form had plenty to do with Sullivan’s desire to be aggressive in free agency this summer
Do you get the sense that Dubas’s decision was more about needing a change in general or that Sullivan wouldn’t be the right coach to execute a rebuild
I just think he and Sullivan were no longer on the same page
It didn’t hurt that this came at a time Sullivan knew very well that the New York Rangers were frothing at the mouth for him and eager to throw and obscene amount of money in his direction
With Dubas wanting to take a slower approach to the process
do you feel like Tocchet is still an option
I imagine Philly would want to lock him in right away
No doubt, this is an issue. Dubas likes Rick Tocchet
He wanted him to coach for Team Canada in Sweden this month
Tocchet turned him down because he knew a storm was brewing in Vancouver
I do believe Tocchet has interest in Pittsburgh
Tocchet also turned down a ton of money in Vancouver
He clearly wants to coach again next season
I think we are in store for a very fun offseason
If David Carle ends up being the head coach
can you see a scenario where the vets immediately tune him out due to age and lack of NHL experience
I think Rick Tocchet is still the man to take over
I could see a young coach having trouble dealing with Hall of Fame players who are older than him
Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang are all-time great Penguins
but that doesn’t mean they’re easy to coach
I don’t know that anyone can get through to Erik Karlsson
Tocchet is probably the safest pick, and potentially the best. He was the NHL’s coach of the year 12 months ago
Things fell apart this season in Vancouver
though I’m not sure how much of that was his doing
He’d bring much-needed toughness to the Penguins
And for anyone who thinks the Penguins need a young coach to help train younger players
I assure you that you could do worse than Tocchet
Jake Guentzel or Conor Sheary about Tocchet’s influence on them when they were rookies
Hey Josh – how explicitly would Dubas & coaching candidates talk about the team (potentially) being bad for the next 1-2 years and what that might mean for this new coach
Would candidates be wary of “rebuilding” for 2-3 years then being fired before the team gets good again
doesn’t want to be part of a lengthy rebuild
Is there any chatter about the timeline for the rebuild
But I’ve always had the sense from Dubas that the Penguins intend to turn aggressive in the summer of 2026
Malkin probably will retire after next season
they’ll have more than $50 million in cap space by next summer
That number figures to decrease between then and now
they’re going to have big money to spend by the summer of 2026
Rutger McGroarty and Ville Koivunen will have a full year under their belts
Harrison Brunicke and Sergei Murashov should be NHL players by that point
you’ll have potentially multiple first-round picks from the 2025 and 2026 drafts who could be NHL-ready
Someone who has a history with coaching younger guys
What do you think of Carle and his chances (or our chances)
and Dubas isn’t afraid to go with someone without NHL experience
Given that he wasn’t interested in the Chicago Blackhawks job
Favorite player from the Fla/TB series u just covered (besides Jake)
and nothing about him on the ice is boring
If Kris Letang doesn’t go to Dumoulin’s side for some unknown reason at the beginning of the 3rd period of Game 5 2018
do the Pens win that series and Ovie remains Cupless
I had a lengthy talk with Crosby about that series recently
He remembers tiny details that you and I have long forgotten
and it became very clear to me that he is still bothered by the result of that one
if Letang didn’t have the worst period of his life in Game 5 — I truly have no idea what he was doing on the goal you reference
and I can still see the helpless look on Dumoulin’s face when I asked him about it after the game — I believe the Penguins would’ve won that series
But the Caps probably still would have won the Cup in the years after
I suspect they cared a little bit less after they finally got one
Favorite Marc-Andre Fleury personal interaction with him
But I remember one time in Columbus long ago
I told him before the game that I wanted him to get a shutout because the cannon they shoot off after goals scares the crap out of me
but the fact that I mentioned it probably meant the shutout hope was doomed
Fleury got the win but did not get a shutout
When I walked into the locker room following the game
More to come on the coach search and many other topics soon

Sidney Crosby will play for Canada at the 2025 IIHF World Championship
and he will be joined by one of his former teammates with the Pittsburgh Penguins
The center will play in the tournament for the first time since 2015
when he was Canada's captain and helped his country win a gold medal
The World Championship has taken on a higher level of importance this year as players across the world try to showcase themselves months ahead of the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics next February
which will include NHL players for the first time since the 2014 Sochi Olympics
Crosby will be joined on Canada by goalie Marc-Andre Fleury
but announced Monday he will play in the Worlds
Crosby and Fleury were teammates in Pittsburgh from 2005-06 to 2016-17
It will be the first time Fleury is playing at the World Championship
and one of the main reasons he's going is because of Crosby
"I've never played in the World Championship
I haven't played with Sid in a while obviously
so I think it'll be fun to go spend some time together and yell at him in practice a bit
Crosby, who was born in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, could be joined by Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon
The two train together during the offseason and were teammates with Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off earlier this year
it would be his first time at Worlds since a second-place finish in 2017
The World Championship is being played in Stockholm
Crosby and potentially MacKinnon will be joined by several top NHL players
with more likely coming after their teams are eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs
The Avalanche lost in the Western Conference First Round to the Dallas Stars in seven games; the Penguins did not qualify
Three members of the Devils will play for Switzerland: forwards Nico Hischier and Timo Meier, and defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler
Germany's roster will include goalie Philipp Grubauer (Kraken), defenseman Moritz Seider (Red Wings) and forward Lukas Reichel (Blackhawks)
The tournament will feature 16 teams; Group A for the preliminary round consists of Austria
with its games at Avicii Arena in Stockholm
and the gold- and bronze-medal games are May 25
having defeated Switzerland 2-0 in the gold-medal game last year in Czechia
Sweden defeated Canada 4-2 to win the bronze medal

his long-time friend and teammate Marc-Andre Fleury also has joined the contingent for what likely will be the final time they play on the same team
Fleury
officially retired from the NHL after he and the Minnesota Wild were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs
and the NHL Players Association confirmed Monday that he has officially ended his NHL career after 21 seasons
several reports — including one from his long-time agent
Allan Walsh — surfaced that the goaltender will join Team Canada for the worlds
which begin Friday and will be held in Sweden and Denmark
Canada’s first game is Saturday against Slovenia
Fleury confirmed his Team Canada appointment during Minnesota’s exit interviews later Monday
“but then a couple days go by and I was like
This will be Fleury’s first time playing in the worlds
although he was on two gold-medal world junior teams and was the backup goaltender for the 2010 Canadian Olympic team that won gold when Crosby score the overtime “golden goal.”
I’ve never played in a world championship
And I haven’t played with Sid in a while
It will be fun to go spend some time together and yell at him in practice a bit — keep him honest in practice.”
The Penguins selected Fleury first overall in the 2003 NHL draft
By the time the Penguins made a handshake deal to leave Fleury exposed for Vegas to select him in the 2017 expansion draft
Fleury had gotten his name on the Stanley Cup three times with the Penguins and had made an indelible impression on Penguins players and fans for his play
his outgoing personality and his penchant for pulling pranks
Crosby and Fleury — widely known as “Flower” — became particularly close and were seatmates on the team plane
Fleury retires second overall in NHL history in wins (575-339-98 record in 1,052 games)
Wonder if this lessens the chances of a one-day contract for MAF to retire a Pen
but going out with Sid playing for Canada might fulfill that need
Better retire 29 next year because 71 will likely follow
Real question is will he actually play or will he be the backup or third goaltender for team Canada
I hope he does get at least one chance to play with Sid
I’m wondering if these games will be televised
Looks like NHL Network has all US games and “select” others
I wondered if he would be able to play in this after “retiring” YAY

Crosby’s playing for Team Canada comes following his being captain of the team at the 4 Nations Face-Off
Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will be donning the red
and black later this month when he represents Team Canada at the upcoming IIHF World Championship tournament
Crosby last played for Canada in the World Championships in 2015 when he helped lead his country to a gold medal
His playing for Team Canada comes following his being captain of the team at the 4 Nations Face-Off
Crosby has represented Team Canada on nine different occasions in his career and this year at the World Championships being held in Denmark and Sweden
he’ll be joined by Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas
who is serving in the same role for his country
Team Canada will begin playing in the tournament this coming Saturday when they face Slovenia at 6:20 a.m
(Eastern Time) before rounding out their preliminary schedule over the ensuing 10 days with games against Latvia
Games in this year’s tournament will be broadcast on the NHL Network and on ESPN+
Sidney Crosby will play in the IIHF World Championship for the third time in his career — and first time since 2015
Hockey Canada announced Sunday evening that Crosby is joining its roster before its first game this Saturday in Stockholm
previously played at worlds in 2006 (led event in goals and points after being left off the 2006 Olympic team at age 18) and 2015 (Canada won)
He will become the oldest Canadian man to play at worlds since Ray Whitney in 2010
Crosby joined the “Triple Gold” club of hockey players to win an Olympic gold medal
a Stanley Cup title and an IIHF World Championship
Crosby and many other stars rarely play at the World Championship because it takes place during the Stanley Cup Playoffs
Even stars whose teams don’t make the playoffs may pass on worlds to rest after the NHL season
Nations have been able to add players to their rosters in the days leading up to worlds and even mid-tournament
which means players can fly over to Europe after their teams are eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs
Crosby’s Penguins were eliminated from the playoffs on April 24
he was added to Canada’s roster on April 26 and made it for the first game May 1
Nathan MacKinnon, whose Colorado Avalanche were eliminated from the playoffs on Saturday, will also join Canada, according to the IIHF
can make his Olympic debut next year as NHL players are expected to participate in the Winter Games for the first time since 2014
The last nation to win the men’s world title the year before the Olympics
then win the Olympics was the Soviet Union in 1983 and 1984

PA - Penguins Captain Sidney Crosby will represent Team Canada at the 2025 IIHF World Championship
who is serving as Team Canada’s General Manager
This year’s World Championship will be held from May 9-25 in Herning
This will mark Crosby’s third time representing Team Canada at the World Championship (2006
’15) and first since he captained the team to the gold medal in 2015
This will be his ninth time skating for Team Canada at the international level
most recently captaining Canada to the gold medal at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February when he led his team in assists (4) and points (5)
Nova Scotia native is the 26th member of the Triple Gold Club
Crosby is the only member of the Club to have captained all three teams to their respective titles and was just the ninth Canadian to be a member of the Triple Gold Club
Known for scoring the gold-medal winning overtime goal against the United States at the 2010 Olympic Games
Crosby has won gold medals at every international tournament for Team Canada including the 4 Nations Face-Off (2025)
World Championship (2015) and World Junior Championship (2005)
Crosby recently concluded his 20th NHL season with the Penguins
game-winning goals (10) and overtime goals (4)
Crosby led his team in scoring for his franchise-record 15th time in his career and became the Penguins all-time assists leader
With his 20th point-per-game season (1.14 PTS/GP)
he surpassed Wayne Gretzky (19) for the most such seasons in NHL history
Below is Team Canada’s preliminary round schedule
The 2025 World Championship will be broadcast on NHL Network and ESPN+
Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon will bring their Nova Scotia swagger to the IIHF World Championship in Sweden and Denmark
Crosby was added to Team Canada’s roster for the upcoming tournament late Sunday
agent Pat Brisson told The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun
“I wanted to keep playing and since I had the opportunity and feel good health-wise
I wanted to be a part of it,” Crosby said in an email after arriving in Sweden
Crosby and MacKinnon are close friends and neighbors in Halifax
They played together for Team Canada at the 2015 World Championship and the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off in February
where he and Crosby played on the same line
MacKinnon led the tournament with four goals and Crosby tied for second in scoring with five points
Neither player came out of that tournament hoping to be available for the World Championship
Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins missed the Stanley Cup playoffs for a third consecutive season and MacKinnon’s Colorado Avalanche lost Game 7 of an opening-round series to the Dallas Stars on Saturday night
Crosby has not played in the World Championship since 2015
who captained Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics
2016 World Cup of Hockey and the 4 Nations Face-Off
will fill that role again at the upcoming tournament
Canada begins preliminary-round play against Slovenia on Saturday at Avicii Arena in Stockholm at 6:20 a.m
37-year-old icons don’t bother playing in the IIHF World Championship
Crosby longs to play in meaningful hockey games and for the third consecutive season
his Penguins didn’t qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs
It was pretty clear that playing in the 4 Nations Face-Off was inspiring for Crosby
who played his best hockey of the season — and maybe his best hockey in the past three or four years — following Canada’s victory in that tournament
But the biggest reason of all for Crosby to participate in this tournament
Crosby was asked numerous times during his red-hot stretch late in the regular season about the secret to his performance
and if he was feeling the impact of fatigue
pausing his routine is the worst thing he can do
“Maybe I’ll get tired at some point,” Crosby said
“But when I go for a while without skating
which is different from when I was younger.”
Thus this tournament gives him the opportunity to play hockey deep into May
Crosby was looking at going nearly six months without playing a meaningful hockey game
My sense is that he wasn’t interested in going that long without playing
This tournament gives him the opportunity to not only pad his already-incomparable international resume but also stay a little sharper over the summer so he’s in strong form when his 21st NHL season begins in October
Canada is scheduled to play seven games during an 11-day span before the medal round of the tournament begins
Crosby tends to vacation in Europe for a few weeks following every NHL season
but he was ready earlier than he would have liked to head across the pond anyway
while this isn’t a tournament that revs many engines in North America
the fact is that Crosby is playing at a remarkably high level and getting to see him play remains a big deal
MacKinnon sat at his locker stall in disbelief
barely able to articulate the disappointment and pain he felt following the Avalanche’s third-period collapse in a Game 7 loss to the Stars
it’s not the feeling he wants to end the 2024-25 hockey season with
so he’s off to worlds for the first time since he was 19 years old
The chance to go out on a higher note — and to play alongside his buddy Crosby — was too appealing
MacKinnon is one of the great players of his generation
thanks to the NHL’s lack of participation in the 2018 and 2022 Olympics
but he did post a goal and three assists in eight games at the Worlds that spring as an 18-year-old
he had four goals and five assists in 10 games for Canada
while Crosby had four goals and seven assists in nine games
MacKinnon returned to the World Championship in 2017
but that’s the last time he wore a Team Canada sweater until the 4 Nations Face-Off earlier this season
MacKinnon played for Team North America — the 23-and-under “young guns” team — at the 2016 World Cup
posting two goals and an assist in three games
has reached a different plane of hockey existence since then
only Connor McDavid has more points than MacKinnon’s 455 (in just 297 regular-season games
Stars of his and Crosby’s caliber don’t often make the trip to worlds — they’re either making deep playoff runs or focusing on their offseason — so their addition makes Canada a clear favorite in Stockholm

I present a history of the Carnegie International
I feel a very real attachment to the Carnegie
thanks to a number of generous curators and directors
who invited me to curate a show of local artists
Crosby asks how he might respond to the recent crisis
Thanks to the critiques presented by the movement of Black Lives Matter
And what can a museum director tell the public from his vantage point
These are the essential questions that Crosby deals with
museum seize(d) the opportunity to reinvent itself
and create lasting relationships that give form to contemporary art history?” This
Crosby wants museums to respect their audiences
Alain de Botton and John Armstrong developed one possible reading of these concerns
museums are primarily concerned with presenting information about artworks
is demonstrate what artworks can teach us about our lives
our emotional dilemmas and our unfulfilled needs
And so they write: “The ultimate ambition of our engagement with art is that we should find ways to enact the values of art in the world.” I certainly have problems with the argument of de Botton and Armstrong
is this suggestion that the practice of art education needs to change
which comes from before Crosby’s tenure in Pittsburgh
One of the resources of the Carnegie is the Charles “Teenie” Harris Archive
Harris (1908-1998) was an African-American photographer who for some decades covered the Black community for the newspapers
when it seemed that the body of his artworks might not be preserved
the Carnegie purchased Harris’ collection of 80,000 negatives from his estate
He photographed anyone newsworthy who came to Pittsburgh
And then when a large display of these photographs was organized in 2012
it happened that I took to the museum an old friend
an elderly Black woman who had never visited her museum
that she invited her granddaughter to accompany her
was how the museum could expand its audience
What better illustration of the claims of Crosby’s essay could be imagined
is another example that employs materials already in the Carnegie’s reserves
Some years ago when Arthur Danto and I walked through the museum
he observed that he had known many of the artists present in this collection
but museums tend not to throw anything away
And so it would be instructive for anyone interested in the history of taste to present these works
many by artists who are now almost forgotten
It would be interesting to see what was not chosen for display in the permanent collections
I bet that many Pittsburghers would take an interest in such an exhibition
The Carnegie International and other large museum exhibitions aim to introduce the international art world to local audiences
is that our museums attract and respond to local audiences
A number of lop-sided rabbit-ears appeared from nowhere at Crosby parkrun today
Apparently the tradition of Easter bunnies originated in Germany
where the character of the ‘Easter Hare’ assessed if children had been good or disobedient before the start of the Eastertide season
these lovely animals are characteristic of our local area here
For several weeks now the wild hares have been seen boxing in the fields around Crosby
This Easter weekend marks a number of different religious festivals: Passover (April 13-20)
and also the Sikh spring harvest celebration
It’s a great time of community and celebration
The Crosby parkrun also always feels like a community celebration and is very welcoming of everyone who turns up to run
Today we welcomed 305 participants from across the region
There were a number of shoutouts for milestones including one for Run Director
who was celebrating his 250th time volunteering
who runs here regularly with his German Shepherd dog) ran his 150th
Congratulations also to Ron Gunnett who ran his 100th today
Congratulations to everyone who achieved personal milestones today
whether it was your first parkrun ever or a milestone tourist location
welcomed 51 first-timers to Crosby parkrun today
If you are wondering why these numbers don’t add up to 305 runners
it is because 29 people who were scanned at the finish chose not to run with barcodes
And that’s fine too – as long as everyone scans their finish tokens to keep the numbers straight
Thirty three people achieved personal bests today which was no mean feat as the sand was soft and the wind brisk and chilly
One of the factors of Crosby beach is that the first 1.5 kilometres are run on the beach
We start with a broad start line which allows everyone a fairly clear start
but like King Canute we do not control the tides
We ask that all runners take great care to follow the course as marked out by the volunteers
and are respective of other slower runners
particularly at the turn around the Anthony Gormley statue we have nicknamed ‘Bing’
In recent weeks we have had a few instances of faster runners in hot pursuit of their PB’s
running back on themselves to get the benefit of harder sand
A big shoutout to all the volunteers who made the event possible:
We look forward to seeing you next Saturday for another wonderful morning at Crosby parkrun

Two years, two weeks and a day – but hey, who’s counting? – since David Crosby died saw an ensemble gig at The Barbican to celebrate specifically his album ‘If I Could Only Remember My Name‘ and more generally the music of David Crosby
a Byrd for the first five albums and the 1973 re-union disc with his songwriting contributions getting stronger as time went on
The all conquering debut albums by CSN and CSNY and the hardly unsuccessful – in sales terms at least – subsequent albums in the many permutations of those consonants
but the album that was being celebrated on this night is one of the truly great albums of the era and in the last years of his life he more than made up for lost time with album after album appearing as CSN became definitively a thing of the past
The songs often felt so personal to Crosby that one had to wonder if many
yes they would be and hopefully will be again – Liam Ó Maonlaí
declared that this band couldn’t be allowed to stop and he made a very good point
was quite the ensemble – organised by Kate St
Crosby’s landmark debut solo album in total with a second side of songs drawn from his contributions to The Byrds
Crosby Stills & Nash (& Young) and beyond
It all got under way with ‘Music is Love‘ and if the high lead vocals by The Staves was strange at first it only took a few seconds for the ultimate hippy anthem to safely land
It’s an optimistic dream – it always was – but a seductive one
Following up with ‘Laughing‘ – Crosby’s questioning of how to find the real meaning of life also served notice that whilst the whole album might be coming it wasn’t going to be in the original running order
It’s always seemed a well balanced album
but it was better to think of this as just The Barbican running order rather than some affront to a masterpiece
It could take it anyway – as ‘Tamalpais High (At About 3)‘ rang out with vocals pitched as instruments against an array of three guitars
the CSN&Y soap opera disguised as an outlaw tale
‘Cowboy Movie‘ with Ed Harcourt on lead vocals – it’s a blissful trip
hitting all the highs and lows as the band of musical brothers find themselves torn apart by “the law” and with one of Crosby’s finest lines of self analysis “you know I’m crazy…but I ain’t real dumb.‘
Liam Ó Maonlaí who came closest to embodying the spirit of Crosby
first on ‘What Are Their Names‘ a song introduced with the acknowledgement that “we know who Crosby would be singing this to” and it carried the song’s full finger-pointing force
With ‘Traction in the Rain‘ following rapidly on its heels that meant the first half would
close out with a trio of exercises in vocal harmonies
and sure enough ‘Song With No Words (Tree With No Leaves)‘ was beautiful and floatingly jazzy in all it’s ethereal beauty and with the lights dimmed and the stage rear filling with smoke it wasn’t hard to imagine the woolly hatted head of Crosby nodding back there in approval
The cathedral city name recitation of ‘Orleans‘ came with a line-up of acoustic guitars and then a beautifully staged closing moment with ‘I’d Swear There Was Somebody Here‘ as the lights went down completely
the shiver of an absent presence passed through the room as Crosby’s requiem for Christine Hinton became a similar reflection for Crosby’s passing
The second half looked to other Crosby songs and launched with Kris Drever on the torch song ‘Everyone’s Been Burned‘
a very jazzy song from Crosby’s first big band
featuring some really cool congas – quickly followed by The Staves – introducing themselves as “a couple of birds singing The Byrds” – for the questioning ‘Why‘ which showed
despite Crosby’s later protestations
that McGuinn was right to grab a half-credit by changing the tone of the song with the simple swap out of “me” for “her“
it carried its Sixties credentials lightly
who’d earn a “Happy Birthday” in honour of her seventieth
impressed mightily on ‘Long Time Comin’‘ – could the guitars have ripped loose a little bit harder
The apocalyptic ‘Wooden Ships‘ became a little softer as The Staves made it a family affair singing ‘Take your sister by the hand‘
Liam Ó Maonlaí made an impassioned introduction to ‘Guinevere‘ commenting on the human need to both make music and to explore one’s inner life by way of framing how David Crosby could have pulled together this loving portrait of Christine Hinton
touched with the depth of sadness he felt at her loss
And then in complete contrast Ed Harcourt led the band home on a truly joyous outpouring of emotion on the counter-culture anthem ‘Almost Cut My Hair.‘ These are songs that felt they might be lost to us now
Moving from the backing singer position to front of stage Michelle Willis spoke movingly of her eight or so years of recording with Crosby on his later solo albums – the true joy he found with playing with a new generation of musicians helps to make it clear that these were not secondary works but a real late flourishing
to the rather wonderful CPR song ‘Morrison‘ which allowed Crosby’s long-held beef with the lead singer of The Doors to live on
but does convey quite clearly the disdain that Crosby held Jim Morrison in
A duet on ‘The Things We Do For Love‘ was Crosby in a much mellower and more forgiving – and grateful – mood and the set closed out with the musing on the passage of time and how it can
be made to stop when one lives in the moment for real
and not just as a meditative aspiration – ‘Delta‘ is such a lovely timeless song
The expectation that the encore would include ‘Deja Vu” surprisingly did not come to pass – just a single song and it was Michelle Willis on ‘Carry Me‘ from the Crosby-Nash album ‘Wind On The Water.’ Here Crosby had accepted that even death can be an acceptable next stage
A strange song for a man in his early thirties to write
apart from that missing ‘Deja Vu‘
a very fitting way to close a gig that had shown the many different musical faces of David Crosby
One can only hope that Liam Ó Maonlaí is right that this band will realise they are too good to permanently stop
the 60th anniversary of the release of ‘Mr
the 55th anniversary of ‘Deja Vu‘
the 50th anniversary of ‘Wind On The Water,‘ the 21st anniversary of ‘Crosby & Nash‘…need we go on

"ROSTER UPDATE | Sidney Crosby has been added to Canada's National Men’s Team for #MensWorlds," Hockey Canada wrote in its announcement
Crosby is a member of the Triple Gold Club
He also captained Team Canada to victory in the 4 Nations Face-Off earlier this year
The Olympics took to social media to react to Crosby's announcement on Monday
"Sidney Crosby will suit up for Team Canada at the upcoming IIHF World Championships for the first time since 2015
bringing in a boost of international experience to the Canadian roster," the Olympics' official page wrote on X
Crosby famously secured an Olympic gold medal for Team Canada with an overtime goal in the gold medal final against Team USA at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics
losing the lead right before the game finished and then having to regroup and find a way to win it in overtime — going through that whole experience is something I've learned a lot from," Crosby said

In his introduction to this latest Ultimate Music Guide
Graham Nash lets fly a rather surprising opinion
“I’m not so sure that the story of CSNY could ever really be told,” he tells us
“There have been a couple of new books about us recently
but it feels like both of them are just lists of how we fucked up
I didn’t sense the incredible joy that we felt
being in love with each other and in each other’s music
creating this body of work that travelled around the world.”
Nash has written an autobiography with what must at least partly have been the intention of telling that story – and it’s also a challenge that we hope we’ve risen to in this latest Deluxe Edition Ultimate Music Guide
we’ve enjoyed some of the spicier tales that have emerged from the archive interviews and encounters which we’ve included here to help account for the rise to pre-eminence of four exceptionally strong personalities
What we’ve really tried to zoom in on in this latest 148-page updated edition, though, is that exceptional and generational music. We’ve gone in-depth on every CSNY album, and the solo careers of the individual players in their various combinations in order to explore the many shades of their harmony. Neil? As you may know, he gets his own magazine
although we’ve only got a few copies of that left.
What’s changed since the initial publication of our CSNY guide is the passing of David Crosby
Croz was a frequent visitor to the pages of Uncut and his many interviews form the excellent career history – from The Byrds through his delightful first solo album and last flurry of inspired work – which is a new addition here
His words on his first solo flight help explain the spirit in which CSN and Y came together – and why that spirit will endure even beyond the life of its players
pushing the walls back,” he tells Graeme Thomson
I learned to stick up for what I believe in from people like Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie

and I think other people are learning it from us

Crosby, 37, joins a Team Canada roster overseen by Penguins president of hockey operations/general manager Kyle Dubas
It will be Crosby’s first time playing in the worlds since 2015
although he played for Team Canada recently
helping his native country win the 4 Nations Face-Off in February
That was a tournament arranged by the NHL held in lieu of an All-Star game
He has a rich history in international play
He scored the so-called Golden Goal in overtime at the 2010 Vancouver Games to clinch the gold medal in the title game against the United States
Crosby said just after the season ended that he would take some time before deciding whether to play for Team Canada
He since has been seen practicing at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex with a few injured players

A symphony of passion and purpose often lies hidden beneath the surface of sports
where every win or loss resonates with personal stories and cherished memories
Maxx Crosby used his own narrative of musical inspiration to celebrate a moment of triumph off the field

Crosby extended a succinct four-word message to Post Malone—a nod to the influential power of melodies and beats that have accompanied him through pivotal moments
This tribute goes beyond a mere acknowledgment; it is a celebration of the way music can uplift
especially during the defining periods of triumph and adversity
Such sincere words not only encapsulate his personal journey but also serve as a reminder of the universal language that music offers
This blend of sports and music mirrors a larger narrative where passion fuels performance and inspiration shapes success
Crosby’s gesture stands as a testament to the potent role that art plays in bridging diverse aspects of life—melding the raw energy of competition with the emotive power of sound
As he continues to forge his legacy on the field
his tribute resonates with a timeless message: that the tunes of our past can inspire the victories of our future
leading to moments of celebration that echo far beyond the confines of any game

It's the first time since 2015 that Crosby will skate for Canada at the annual international tournament
putting an end to a decade-long absence without the superstar center
Team Canada released its initial 15-man roster on Thursday
though Crosby was not included at that point
There was some speculation that he'd elected not to play
the team announced that he'd be joining the squad for the upcoming tournament in Denmark and Sweden
ROSTER UPDATE | Sidney Crosby has been added to 🇨🇦’s National Men’s Team for #MensWorlds.MISE À JOUR | Sidney Crosby s’ajoute à l’équipe nationale masculine du 🇨🇦 pour le #MondialMasculin. pic.twitter.com/U4oIXRXNe4
Darren Dreger of TSN also reports that there's a "decent chance" Colorado Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon, a Nova Scotia native like Crosby, would also join the team for the upcoming tournament
was part of the Team Canada squad that won the 4-Nations Face Off in February
helping to defeat the United States in the championship game
he registered 11 points in nine games and helped Canada win gold in a 6–1 victory over Russia in the tournament finale
but the 20-year NHL veteran hasn't lost much of a step since then
Crosby scored 33 goals and had 91 points in 80 games
He joins a Team Canada forwards group that already consists of Macklin Celebrini

Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby likes to analyze other players’ games
Crosby was watching film of many 2025 NFL Draft prospects
including the Atlanta Falcons’ newest defensive ends
Crosby is now the assistant general manager of the Eastern Michigan University football program
so brushing up on his talent evaluation as he looks for players to join the Eagles should be helpful
asked Crosby what he thought about their newest defensive tackle
Crosby invoked the name of an all-time great coach whom he referenced when watching Graham’s film
He has an all-time score; he’s been doing it all the way back to the Warren Sapp days
Why would you draft him in the top 10?’ I’m like
‘What are y’all talking about?’ Anybody who says that doesn’t watch football

Crosby hopes Graham succeeds as an NFL player – just not when he plays the Silver and Black

CARTER LANDIS Carter Landis studied journalism at Michigan State University where I graduated in May of 2022. He currently is a sports reporter for a local television station, and is a writer covering the Las Vegas Raiders
This was our first foray to the Northwest for a parkrun and what better place to start than Crosby Beach
but being based in the Midlands we don’t get to see it that much
We also enjoy quite a bit of parkrun tourism and so we consulted our list of ‘parkruns we really want to visit’
and Crosby jumped off the page and grabbed us
During a visit to Japan last year (clang!) we saw an Anthony Gormley statue at the Hakone Open Air Museum
This piqued our interest for a visit to Crosby beach to see Gormley’s ‘Another Place’ installation of 100 cast iron figures on the beach
spanning three kilometres of shoreline and extending almost 1 kilometre out to sea
What makes it magical is that the landscape is ever-changing due to differing tide levels
taking proper time to explore the area and take in the enormity of the project - stunning
which makes it such an iconic parkrun to visit
The run director Andy told us that on some occasions
the course has to run solely on the promenade
We were lucky to visit on a day where the low tide was only two hours previously
The start line is marked out on the sand - nice and wide - so no problems with crowding at the start
the sand was pretty easy to run on as it was nice and firm
but as we headed down the beach towards the Seaforth Radar Tower the rippled effect on the sand from the seawater started to make it a little tricky underfoot
Some of the statues donned their Hi-Viz vests to guide us along the beach and the turnaround point
then it was back up the beach towards the start
At this point the sand started to become quite soft underfoot
This was only the second parkrun we’ve done involving steps (Jesmond Dene) and unlike JD there were only nine of them leading you onto the tarmac promenade
I say tarmac - half of it was covered with soft sand which had blown up from the beach
but it was certainly a respite from the beach
We carried on along the promenade to Brenda’s turnaround point by the coastguard station (thank you Brenda)
then after a short run through the car park it was onto the grassy common behind the sand dunes and a straight run to the finish line
It has pretty much everything in the way of a parkrun: sand
But the biggest thing it has is a really lovely vibe
the volunteers were so friendly and helpful
We’ve been to a few parkruns where we’ve stood around looking lost
but at Crosby the volunteers come and say hello and make sure you’re ok
Our conversations quickly moved onto football (and a team in blue rather than red) and we genuinely felt very welcomed
A particular shout out goes to Gareth and Brian
the volunteer co-ordinator and park walker respectively
Event 404 and its team of 32 amazing volunteers looked after 229 runners
Big shoutouts to Janet Woods and Neil Sumner completing their 250th parkruns
and the 15 brave souls who began their parkrun obsession today (you WILL become addicted!)
The runniest parkrunner today was Joanne New
Only 21 to go to get that spangly blue 500 shirt
Well done also to Jan Mullin with the most volunteer credits under her belt - an impressive 429 times
Crosby parkrun is easy to find - follow the satnav guidance on the website to Crosby Leisure Centre and park on the right-hand side in the north car park
and toilets are available for a pre-parkrun visit (don’t leave it until the last minute as there are only three)
There is also a cafe in the leisure centre for post-run parkfaff
apologies for the tenuous music references
but at least we avoided the Beach Boys and Steps (well
The event was made possible by 32 volunteers:
Today's full results and a complete event history can be found on the Crosby parkrun Results Page
The days between Christmas and New Year are always a sluggish blur
but despite that 262 Parkrunners braved the murky conditions to run the last Crosby Parkrun of 2024
There was a brief moment when we did wonder if this would be turned into a duathlon as the tide crept in towards the start of the run
luckily though the beach was lovely as we headed towards Bing without having to swim
I did another local Parkrun and heard a volunteer say “those Crosby runners are hardy”
us Crosby runners certainly are and we are proud to be
This was an impressive week for many of those who took part
40 people who came to Crosby for the first time
and many congratulations to three volunteers who reached their 50th milestone; Karen Mullarkey
David Dodgson completed his 100th parkrun this week and Len Wilson volunteered for the 200th time at Crosby
The first male was Jamie Rutherford (a PB at 17:00) and first female was Beth Woods (a PB at 21:26)
The best age graded result was from Alan Joyce at 78.14%
I’m incredibly privileged to call Beth and Alan my friends and am constantly in awe of them every week
As for many of us when I reflect on this year
I know that Parkrun has been a huge part of my life
Parkrun has given me some of the most amazing friends I could ask for
and it’s through Parkrun that the importance of intergenerational friendships has been highlighted to me
My ‘non-running’ friends often laugh when I say a lot of my running friends are men in their fifties plus
but it’s through these people that I’ve had such amazing support
Who else better to learn running tips from than people who have been running their whole life
There’s also a lot of life wisdom I’ve learnt too
I’ve made friends with people I’d have never have met otherwise and what a delight for us to have a shared sense of enjoyment through running
It’s a real joy to have found such encouragement and friendship from this wonderful community
The most important thing I’ve learnt from running is that you could be anyone in the world
but the only thing that runners really want to know about you is when your next race is
The answer could be a 100-mile ultra marathon or it could be a new Parkrun
Thank you to all those who have supported each and every Parkrunner on their journey
An even bigger thank you to the all the volunteers who give their time up every Saturday to cheer us on
The 26 volunteers who made this week's event possible were: John Baldwin

Sidney Crosby had yet another terrific NHL regular season, but for the second straight year, his Pittsburgh Penguins failed to make the playoffs
Fans are starting to wonder whether he’ll retire as a Penguin or not—and now
an NHL analyst has revealed the one and only team he believes The Kid could potentially sign with
Sidney Crosby is a special player. Even at 38, he continues to prove he’s an elite talent, carrying the Penguins through another regular season. Although Pittsburgh missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year, fans have been in awe of Crosby’s performance—he’s scored over 90 points in each of his last three seasons. Earlier this year, he even broke Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most seasons averaging a point per game
There’s been plenty of debate among NHL fans and experts about whether Crosby will finish his career in Pittsburgh, especially given the team’s recent struggles. Some have long hoped to see him join Nathan MacKinnon in Colorado
ESPN’s John Buccigross has named the one team he believes Crosby could realistically join
“I think that’s the place—if he’s going to go anywhere
Buccigross also said he believes Evgeni Malkin will get one more year in Pittsburgh with Crosby
But he added that Crosby would be a great fit on a young
Crosby grew up cheering for the Canadiens—the same team his father
was drafted by in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft

While many assumed we wouldn’t see Crosby back on the ice until next season, news broke Sunday that he’s headed to the 2025 IIHF World Championship to play for Team Canada
The tournament kicks off Friday and will be held in Stockholm
Crosby has represented Team Canada on numerous occasions
most recently at the 4 Nations Face-Off Tournament in February
this will be just his third appearance at the World Championship
Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby (87)
he'll get to do it alongside one of his former teammates
who was with him for all three of his Stanley Cup wins
Fleury announced he’ll be suiting up for Team Canada as well
who spent the past three-and-a-half seasons with the Minnesota Wild
played the final NHL game of his career on April 29
but decided it would be fitting to have one last run with Team Canada before retiring and officially hanging up his skates
I think that would be pretty cool,'" Fleury said in a press conference on Monday
Fleury and Crosby played 12 seasons together with the Penguins and built a strong relationship with one another over that span
Crosby said Fleury "means a lot" to him
"A great friend and someone that I shared a lot of great times (with) and been through a lot of adversity, too," he said. "Basically
growing up together in the league and trying to find our way
He's been an incredible teammate and an incredible player for a long time."
I was visiting Crosby from mid Wales as an avid parkrun tourist
This was my 246th parkrun but my 169th different consecutive one
I was at Wolverhampton the week before and noticed a contingent of Crosby park runners at that event
The high viz volunteers were gathering next to the leisure centre but as we were early we went onto the beach to survey the iconic Anthony Gormley statues and to warm up
By jingo we could see why the locals stayed off the beach due to the windy conditions
after a swift jog up and down the sands we returned to the shelter of the leisure centre
Emma O’Hanlon gave the first timer’s briefing
There were 19 of us in total of which 5 were running their very first parkrun
A warm welcome to them and I hope it’s the start of a long association with the parkrun community
She explained the nature of the course which started off on the beach with an out and back section
Then there was a section along the promenade to the lifeboat station where a second turnaround point led to the final stint along the dunes to the finish
Once this was over the well seasoned locals were drifting onto the beach
wisely leaving it to the last possible moment
The RD for the day was Gareth O’Hanlon who welcomed visitors from near and far
with one gentleman having travelled from Melbourne
He gave the usual preliminaries and tongue in cheek asked us to step between the letters of the festive greeting
“Merry Christmas” which one of the volunteers had etched into the sand in front of the start line
Then without further ado he set us off as he commented that it was
I started off with a light weight jacket on but surprisingly was getting warm by the time I had done the out and back section on the beach
So I discarded it and handed it to one of the volunteers who kindly took it to the finishing point for me
the rain kept off and despite the tricky conditions 13 people managed a PB which was pretty impressive
The volunteers did a great job cheering us on
many of whom were dressed in Christmas themed accessories as were plenty of the runners
walked or jogged the course with Jamie Rutherford being the first male to finish in 18.06; Bethany Woods was the first female in 21.44 and John Monaghan achieved the best age grade percentage with a score of 76.41%
Well done to them and everyone else but especially the 24 volunteers who made the event possible
without which parkrun simply would not happen
Afterwards we went to the leisure centre for refreshment but unfortunately it was closed as the staff were on holiday
so we walked into the town centre and enjoyed a coffee in Pranzo's
Cheers to everyone who made our pre Christmas parkrun one to remember
Graham Nash and Neil Young in a band together might have just been the greatest publicity stunt in music history
each member did have some mainstream success under their belt before joining the group
it was the assimilation of their talents into one supergroup that made them one of the world’s biggest bands
When they split in a haze of drugs and drama in 1970
they retained that level of notoriety and fame into four separate successful solo careers
there was a big question mark over how the mercurially talented David Crosby would take to a solo career
to call Crosby erratic is akin to calling the sky ‘up’
His was a temperament that needed to be handled with kid gloves due to his various addictions
volcanic temper and complete inability to shut up
All things that would stay with him throughout the rest of his life
he was also the member of CSNY that thrived by collaborating
He had come to prominence as a member of The Byrds and even when he joined Stills and Nash
the songs co-written for those records were often ones Crosby had finished with the help of his bandmates
To be absolutely clear this is me in no way diminishing his talent
Neil Young springs to mind for reasons I can’t quite put my finger on
The sheer quality of what Crosby was able to create speaks for itself whether he collaborated with others to do that or not
If you look at the reviews his debut solo album If I Could Only Remember My Name received
The record was slated on release but has since been regarded as one of the best solo records by an ex-CSNY member
A lot of that is due to the absolutely stellar supporting cast that Crosby assembled to make the album
Young and Nash from his previous band all showed up to write and play on the album; Joni Mitchell sings back up on a few songs
as does Paul Kantner and Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane
there was one person that Crosby considered to be the beating heart of the record
Crosby was asked whether he would ever tour his debut solo album in full
And there’s no point trying to duplicate what happened there without him
There was a certain magic that happened every time he and I picked up two guitars.”
It’s clear that Crosby viewed The Grateful Dead frontman as a musical kindred spirit
and would elaborate on their connection in a truly charming moment later in the interview
Crosby continued: “If you listen to the beginning of [album outtake] ‘Kids And Dogs’
we’re playing a game with each other where we’d count: one
and neither of us knows what note the other guy’s gonna play
and then we hit a chord that’s so good that Garcia starts laughing
There you have what made Crosby really stand out among his peers
Anyone can sit down with a guitar and hash out a song on their own
It takes true vision to work with someone and get the best out of each other
Few people have given us more proof of this than David Crosby
Not only for the work he did with Jerry Garcia
vast majority of the people he worked with as well
In 2018 MOJO found David Crosby on a roll – writing well
singing great and recording fine solo albums
It was a cornucopia of blessing he conceded he might not deserve
If only he could only have remembered to play nice with Graham
“I don’t see any need to be gentle…” he told Dave DiMartino
THERE ARE WAR STORIES AND THEN THERE ARE WAR STORIES..
“Let me swap with you,” says David Crosby as we choose our seats at the restaurant table
Most remarkable of all: his singing voice remains an object of wonder
So there’s no excuse for me to be singing the way I am right now
My current partners that are so good I have to paddle faster to keep up
They all tell me that I’m singing as good as I’ve ever sang in my life
And I don’t think they’re buttering my toast; they’re not that kind of people.”
But doesn’t age take a toll on every singer
you have to be able to hear yourself.” He starts warbling
you can’t sing in parts with other people very well.” He pauses for a beat
“Does that sound like anybody you know?” He smiles
No, Crosby did not mention Stephen Stills, a man whose reliance on hearing aids is public knowledge, and, along with Graham Nash and Neil Young
his partner in the astronomically successful Crosby
whose hearing – we will hope – remains just fine
and who with Crosby was a founding member of the celebrated Byrds
But both performers and both groups came into David Crosby’s life early in his career
and every arrow on every relevant graph was pointing upward to the right at sharp angles
For David Crosby? Not so much. Not everything came to a pleasant end. Despite his invaluable contributions to that golden stretch of Byrds albums from 1965’s Mr. Tambourine Man to 1968’s _The Notorious Byrd Brother_s
Crosby was booted from the band by McGuinn and Chris Hillman midway through the making of the latter – ostensibly for his insistence that the album include his song Triad rather than the Goffin-King penned Goin’ Back
I gave up on that a long time ago,” he says
and I was trying to get all the attention I possibly could
and I wanted to be more than just the rhythm guitar player and harmony singer
It’s just the same thing that happens in all the bands.”
If Crosby was looking for a smoother ride or more indulgence of his songwriting
he could barely have chosen a more problematic vehicle than CSN or CSNY
Although the internal rivalry fueled some of Crosby’s greatest songs: Guinnevere (later covered by Miles Davis
“It was an intensely competitiveenvironment,” Crosby recalls
we transcended our egos for quite a while there
but it’s interesting that he describes them in terms of an apprenticeship rather than a pinnacle
“They gave me a platform to get good,” he says
“The Byrds and CSN and CSNY gave me a shot at having the tools to work with
an incredible harmony singer; in Stills and Young
incredible writers and incredible guitar players
Roger McGuinn was at least half of what happened with The Byrds
Those guys gave me music to work on that was spectacular
So is there anything he wished he’d done differently
The same thing happens to all bands – if you’re in a marriage with somebody and you’re not in love with them
And I’m sure I irritated the shit out of them
But we’ve all done horrible stuff to each other – Neil leaving Stephen on tours
We’ve all done horrible stuff to each other
If I Could Only Remember My Name: David Crosby's masterpiece revisited.
“Music pinned me to the map…” David Crosby reflects on his life in music.
Five of the best: David Crosby songs
for David Crosby in the years that followed
he spent nine months in a Texas state prison for possession of heroin and cocaine; in 1985
he drove into a fence in Marin County and was arrested for drunk driving
drug paraphernalia and a concealed pistol; in 2004
hotel employees searching his suitcase for identification found pot
for which he spent 12 hours in jail before being bailed out and
If I had the choice of going on as a junkie or going back to prison
Crosby harbours no romanticillusions about this part of his life
"I went right down the tubes until I was a junkie
Was there anything he might have done to avoid going down that route
All of a sudden I was no longer destroying myself
“It’s a plottable curve.” He draws an imaginary graph in the air
You can only draw one conclusion from that
when I went to prison and was forced to quit
He looks out at the Pacific in front of us
there has been a constant in his personal life for an unusually long time: his wife
and our love for each other is very strong
But she’s a wonderful girl and I wouldn’t be alive without her
I would not have made it through the junkie part of it if I did not have what the French call a raison d’être
If a life can indeed be plotted like a curve on a graph
let’s acknowledge that Crosby’s has been on the rise since the mid-’90s
pencil in February of 1995 as one especially noteworthy co-ordinate; that’s when Crosby
who’d been given up for adoption by his mother in the early ’60s
Raymond had heard Crosby was recuperating from liver failure
and had received a transplant months earlier
So son came in to meet father at the UCLA Medical Center
“when you meet up with a kid that was put up for adoption by his mom like that – that you’ve never met – it doesn’t go well
everybody coming to that meeting brings too much baggage
That initial meeting took root and affected both Crosby and Raymond profoundly
was already a skilled musician – he played keyboards and favoured funk then – and with the addition of session guitarist Jeff Pevar they would become Crosby
and David Crosby’s career was on the upswing
and I’ve written a lot of the best music of my life with him,” says Crosby
I submit to him – because he knows way more than I do
Crosby’s musical enthusiasm doesn’t stop with his son
A 2015 appearance on Family Dinner Volume Two
a benefit record put together by US jazz rock band Snarky Puppy
led him to a productive union with an entire cast of skilled players and friends
in which several members of his two current bands have roots
keyboardist Michelle Willis and guitarist Becca Stevens comprise the Lighthouse Band
who recorded the upcoming Here If You Listen; Willis
bassist Mai Leisz and drummer Steve DiStanislao are among those in the Sky Trails Band
who accompany Crosby on his European Tour this month
“These people got me so excited,” Crosby notes
“They’re such a joy to work with – these are people who are young
That’s the only explanation I can come up with for four records in five years.”
David Crosby’s visibility has been further enhanced lately by his presence on Twitter – which is biting
they don’t care so much about what people think about them
Crosby appears to have passed that point long ago
if you have to live your life in front of the entire world
and then you have to put it back together again
you become desensitised to the approval factor of the entire world
There would appear to be few sacred cows in David Crosby’s world. He’s criticised his CSNY bandmates Neil Young and Graham Nash when both left their wives of many years for younger women, leading to serious fallout. Then there was Kanye West. “He did that really awful Bohemian Rhapsody [at Glastonbury, 2015] and came off afterward and said he was the ‘greatest living rock star’
if he thinks he’s the greatest living rock star
would somebody please drive him over to Stevie Wonder’s house so he can see what the greatest living rock star actually looks like?’ And while you’re at it
could you buy him some Ray Charles records so he can learn how to fucking sing
People are sometimes too careful; they don’t want to say the wrong thing
I applaud Joni Mitchell – I know she’s crazy
And I’m not going to shut up when somebody says… somebody was trying to say that Yoko Ono was a legitimate artist
‘You’re out of your fucking mind – I’ve heard better music out of an air raid siren.’
“I do go off on people sometimes when it’s an extreme case
What I try not to do is for some kid who’s saying
‘Will you listen to my brother’s band?’ or
because you need to be a little gentle there
But I don’t see any need to be gentle with
I don’t see any need to be gentle with Ted Nugent.” He laughs
If there is one area where some sensitivity is noticeable on Crosby’s part, it might be the event which took place in nearby Los Angeles the previous night and will again later tonight: The Sweetheart Of The Rodeo 50th Anniversary performance starring Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman
Sweetheart… was the first Byrds album on which David Crosby did not appear
I’ve been trying to get Roger to get The Byrds together for years
It seems like you have a friendly relationship with himon Twitter
I think Roger is an amazingly talented human being
He seems on the face of it to be kind of stuck in a folk singer thing
but when it came to translating Bob Dylan’s songs into records
And I would work with him again in a minute
I have apologised to Neil for slagging his girlfriend
I don’t think that’s what’s really going on.”
Has it been a process of people coming back and apologising
“And I have apologised to Neil for slagging his girlfriend [Daryl Hannah]
I don’t think that’s what’s really going on
Neil has only really worked with us when he thought he needed us
I’ve seen a tape of him playing with that band where he’s playing as good as I’ve ever seen him play
Doing Cortez The Killer and fucking nailing it
Put all those things together man in your head and ask yourself is he going to call us up and get into a bundle of… I mean
how things worked out with Graham Nash – “I don’t want anything to do with Crosby at all,” Nash told a Dutch magazine in 2016 – did seem unimaginable
“But I still can’t sit around praying for them to change their mind
I don’t have any bad feelings in my heart about any of those guys
I would work with any of them at any point
Crosby’s current run of solo albums reveal him as the one – of all the icons of the Woodstock generation – who’s nearest the top of his game
“I was supposed to be dead from being a junkie
I was supposed to be dead from Hepatitis C
All that stuff was supposed to kill me I was supposed to die in prison
I have this thing I can do where I can actually make a contribution
I can actually make things a little bit better by making music
It’s the only thing I can do that does that
Because I’ve spent a lot of my life just being a wastrel
just trying to see how much pleasure I can cram in
So to now feel that I can make a contribution
