Crowborough Athletic were vying for a second promotion spot from the SCFL and a place in next season’s Isthmian south east division
There was a perfect start for the Crows – and a devastating one for United – as Rushaar Samuel-Smikle scored twice within the first four minutes to put them 2-0 up and firmly in charge
But moments before half-time Charlie Ball scored to halve the deficit
Crowborough’s Harrison Mayhew was sent off after picking up a second yellow card
it was 10 v 10 as Sam Scott was also shown red
That made no difference to the scoreline as the Crows held on to clinch that prized promotion spot
They will be replaced in the SCFL Premier in 25-26 by Forest Row
who beat Infinity in Saturday’s Division 1 final

Crowborough Beacon Golf Club will build on a record-breaking year with a six-day golf extravaganza in summer 2025
‘The Beacon’s Festival of Golf’ is the latest innovation from the club after it enjoyed unprecedented success over the last 12 months – which saw all-time high green fee revenues recorded and membership numbers near capacity
prompting the introduction of a formal waiting list
Record-breaking demand for membership has been partly attributed to the club’s events calendar
with an exciting schedule for both members and guests across 2024 set to continue into the new year
Approximately one third of Crowborough Beacon’s 700 members are now in the ‘intermediate’ category (ages 18-40)
highlighting the emergence of a new generation within the club’s membership
the club also increased its female membership by 35 per cent across 2024
Club Secretary, Chris Dowrick said: “We are delighted with the success we have seen in 2024
both as we aim to boost green-fee sales and seek to build the strongest and most diverse membership in the club’s history
We are very pleased with the results we are seeing in both areas and will work hard to ensure the club and member experience keeps improving in 2025
“The festival is a great example of the additions and introductions we are working hard to bring to the table
ensuring that we continue to give back to our members with new experiences and make sure Crowborough Beacon remains a club we can all feel proud to belong to.”
‘The Beacon’s Festival of Golf’ will centre around six consecutive days of inclusive competition across a wide range of individual and team events
The event provides visiting golfers with the opportunity to experience a premium heathland course at exceptional value
while members can also take advantage of heavily discounted entry fees for all six competitive events
Highlights will include the comeback of the popular Beacon Trophy – a tournament for golfers with a handicap of 6.4 or better
The event will be returning in 2025 with a twist
with male and female golfers competing side by side with women’s event The Beacon Salver being played at the same time
A prizegiving ceremony will bring festivities to a close on June 12
with the whole family invited to enjoy a BBQ on the clubhouse terrace
All profits raised by the week celebration will be reinvested straight back into the club
used to fund projects centring on bunker improvement and cart path replacements
Crowborough Beacon’s par-71 course has been developed by renowned architects including Harry Colt and Alister MacKenzie since the club was founded in 1895
though the identity of the original designer remains shrouded in mystery
Famed for its dramatic landscape and panoramic views at one of the highest points in Sussex
the club is also known as a favourite of legendary author and Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
who served as club captain in the early 20th century

The date for your diary is Thursday 20th March and the annual meeting will be held at a new venue
This proposes a great opportunity for local residents to meet councillors from Crowborough Town Council
Wealden District Council and East Sussex County Council.
Crowborough Town Councillors will be available to chat informally with residents at surgery tables from 6.45pm to 7:30pm
after which the Town meeting will commence
The meeting will open with a welcome from Councillor Matthew Street (Mayor) followed by a talk from guest speaker
there will be a talk by Cllr Keith Glazier (East Sussex County Council) about the proposed Mayoral Authority for Sussex
There will then be a Q&A session with the Town Mayor and Crowborough Town Council’s Youth Ambassadors
The proposals involve the expansion of the school’s site in Church Road
alongside plans to teach its primary and secondary students at a single location
The school would also be expected to open a new nursery provision for two- and three-year-olds
who would also be located at the Church Road site
Grove Park School’s secondary and sixth form classes are co-located with the nearby Beaconsfield Academy
This would continue to be the case for sixth form students should the other proposals be implemented
which were put out to consultation in 2023
would also have seen sixth form students brought on to the Church Road site
due to what officers described as “budgetary constraints and challenging site conditions”
Cllr Standley’s decision is contingent on the grant of planning permission for the construction of a new school block in Church Road. The council has identified a £17 million budget for the project and says the new block would be constructed to current design standards to ensure long-term value for money

to deliver the very best for them now and in the future
“Closing a branch is always a very difficult decision and we spend a great deal of time assessing where and when we do this and how to minimise the impact it may have on our customers
we believe that the introduction of our new Community Bankers and the exciting plans we have for our remaining network of 349 branches and Work Cafés
alongside the rapid and innovative improvements to our award-winning mobile banking app
will provide the right balance of digital banking and human interaction when required.”

The company has apologised for its shortcomings and is committed to making things better for customers

PROJECTS: A multi-million pound investment means three separate projects are underway to increase resilience in east Sussex (Image credit: South East Water)
A consistent and reliable water supply is crucial and any interruptions
like those experienced in Crowborough in 2023
South East Water understands this and the company is looking to address shortcomings in service
taking action to meet and exceed customer expectations
the company has completed a number of projects including a £185,000 investment to replace approximately 300 metres of a burst-prone
This pipe burst 17 times in the five years prior to being replaced
which resulted in customers experiencing a loss of supply or low pressure
“This is unacceptable to us and we are committed to investing to future-proof our network by strengthening our infrastructure across our supply area,” said operations director
South East Water said the issues in 2023 were the result of extremely high demand across Sussex and Kent
with peaks of 678 million litres of drinking water being produced per day
compared to an average of 540 million litres per day
Water was re-routed across the network to restore supplies and the company has been working hard to pump more water into the area to ensure taps are kept flowing
Mr Whitfield added: “We have learned lessons from the supply issues experienced
including when almost 4,000 customers in the Crowborough
Rotherfield and Wadhurst areas had intermittent water supplies
low pressure or no water at all in the summer of 2023
“Interruptions to the water supply in Crowborough and the surrounding areas in recent years have been frustrating for us
That’s why we are investing time and resources to strengthen our network and make sure the water supply remains secure now
South East Water supplies quality drinking water to 2.3 million customers in the south east of England through a network of 9,000 miles of pipe - and is investing more than £489 million between 2020 and 2025 to upgrade its network
The company has also submitted its most ambitious business plan
to invest £1.9 billion over five years from 2025 to ensure the security of the water supply and deliver a reliable and high-quality service to customers in Crowborough
we’ve not provided the service our customers in Crowborough and the surrounding areas expect from us in recent years,” said Mr Whitfield
“We are sorry for this and although we cannot change what has happened
we can assure customers that we are working hard to put things right
“A thorough review of what happened has been conducted and lessons for the future have been learned
including how to change the direction of water flows and increase transfers of water around our network
We have improved pumping capability across parts of Sussex and our water treatment sites have been made more resilient
helping to maximise our raw water storage over the winter period
“We have also recommissioned three drinking water storage tanks that had been out of service for repairs and maintenance
providing an additional 22.5 million litres of water to the Kent and Sussex network.”
the company has started the installation of a new water main between Bewl Water Treatment Works (WTW) and drinking water storage tanks in Wadhurst and Rotherfield
which is one of three substantial projects underway in East Sussex
the £80 million investment will collectively upgrade and improve the network infrastructure in the county
providing increased resilience with Bewl WTW being upgraded and 6.5 kilometres of water main being replaced between Heathfield and Rushlake Green via Punnetts Town
By enhancing the connectivity between service reservoirs with new pipelines across the Rother and Wealden districts and upgrading key sites
South East Water will be creating a more resilient network allowing it to maintain customer supplies more readily during unexpected disruptions
