Clyde moved to Hamilton in 2022 after North Lanarkshire Council refused to extend their lease at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld Hamilton Academical and Clyde are set to effectively switch stadiums next season after the former announced plans to play their home games in Cumbernauld League 2 Clyde confirmed on Wednesday that they will continue their tenancy of New Douglas Park in Hamilton having vacated Broadwood Stadium three years ago Accies have announced plans to leave their ground of the past 24 years amid a row over stadium ownership and rental and move into Clyde's former home New Douglas Park has been rented by both clubs this season from a company controlled by Colin McGowan Last month, Clyde had expressed fears that a five-year agreement signed in 2022 was under threat but on Thursday they stated that they are "in a position to commit to New Douglas Park for the foreseeable future" Now Hamilton - relegated from the Championship for breaching licence conditions after their appeal was rejected on Thursday - have responded They said: "Arrangements are now being made to relocate the club from the start of next season to Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld with the long-term aim of building a new stadium in Hamilton "Discussions with South Lanarkshire Council have started in order to identify a suitable location." Hamilton relegation confirmed as appeal dismissed 'No consensus' about altering Premiership - SPFL What is still to be decided as season reaches climax The news came as Hamilton awaited the results of Thursday's appeal against a SPFL decision to deduct them 15 points for breaching league rules the dismissal of which will result in their relegation from the Championship "Provision of incorrect information regarding stadium ownership" was one of multiple rule breaches cited by the SPFL for the points deduction Accies chairman Jock Brown says the club board found the latest proposal to settle a dispute with the stadium owner "unacceptable" Brown states that "the club is not indebted to the owner" with the "balance" of payments over the most recent 22 months "substantially in favour of the club" "So any postponement of settlement of the appropriate balance is inappropriate," a statement adds "The club's experience of being tenants over the past 22 months has been thoroughly unsatisfactory." Brown says Accies have been "trying to purchase the company which owns the stadium" for the past year as that was "the seller's preferred way of completing the transaction" and that "the necessary funds are available" accepting the offer made by the owner "would be irresponsible" "unachievable" and not "in the best interests of the club" Given the uncertainty over the use of the stadium the SPFL had agreed to extend Clyde's registration details for next season they believe they have "navigated it successfully" to ensure they can continue to use New Douglas Park Clyde moved to Hamilton while seeking a permanent home in Glasgow since their own 28-year stay at Broadwood came to an end three years ago after North Lanarkshire Council refused to extend their lease in Cumbernauld Trailblazer Zhao set to take snooker to 'another level' in China Alexander-Arnold leaves as modern Liverpool great - but fans will feel hurt Alpine poised to replace Doohan with Colapinto The final series of Man Like Mobeen has arrived John Simm stars in the provocative 90s drama Warm-hearted comedy with Ben Miller and Sally Phillips Follow two ambitious river restoration projects Scotland men's internationals to be shown live on BBC Commonwealth Games: Why is it so special to be part of Team Scotland From titles to tinpottery - rank Scotland's top 10 clubs Who has made Troy's Premier League team of the week Zhao beats Williams in historic final - highlights VideoZhao beats Williams in historic final - highlights 'Scheffler and DeChambeau wins further raise US PGA excitement levels' Match-fixing scandal to Crucible champion - fall and rise of Zhao 'We need to take a look at ourselves' - Arsenal stalling at wrong time Palmer's brilliance could be key moment in Chelsea's Champions League quest Europa League 'papering over cracks' for Man Utd - Rooney VideoEuropa League 'papering over cracks' for Man Utd - Rooney Ask Me Anything the new BBC Sport service designed to serve you Bayern's 'James Bond' - how Kane clinched his first trophy Nine bolters with a shot of making the Lions squad How 'absolutely outstanding' Palmer 'destroyed' Liverpool VideoHow 'absolutely outstanding' Palmer 'destroyed' Liverpool Still number one & 'sparring' with Draper - return of Sinner Saints 'punch' favourites Leinster in game for the ages VideoVardy the best £1m ever spent - Shearer Poppy's tears Elton John & Happy Gilmore - McIlroy on Jimmy Fallon show Two opposing views on football's transgender ban Copyright © 2025 BBC. Scottish Fire and Rescue confirmed three more appliances were called to the scene on Friday morning. Emergency services were called to reports of a wildfire off Fannyside Road at around 8.42pm on Thursday. One appliance remained at the scene overnight. Police Scotland confirmed Fannyside Road is currently closed between Forest Road and the B803 Greengairs Road, due to the blaze. Residents in the Abronhill area of Cumbernauld and Bonnybridge have been advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke. Public react to Cumbernauld wildfire. stvnews scotland cumbernauld It comes after SFRS issued an “extreme risk” alert across the whole of Scotland from Friday, April 11, until Saturday, April 12. Fire services have been battling multiple blazes across the country over the past week including one at Galloway Forest Park, near Glentrool in Dumfries and Galloway, last Thursday. The blaze burned for at least four days and at its height, there were two appliances at the scene, assisted by two helicopters dousing the area with water. A group of campers, comprising of two fathers and their sons, were rescued by the Coastguard and airlifted to safety amid the chaos. More warm weather is set to continue in the days ahead with SFRS urging the public to exercise caution when out in rural areas. A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Fannyside Road is currently closed between Forest Road, Cumbernauld, and the B803 Greengairs Road, due to a wildfire on adjacent grassland. “Police Scotland was made aware of the fire around 9.40pm on Thursday, April 10. “The incident is ongoing and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service remains in attendance. “Members of the public are advised to avoid the area while emergency services respond. “Residents in the Abronhill area of Cumbernauld and Bonnybridge are advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke in the area.” Deputy Assistant chief officer Kenny Barbour, head of Prevention, Protection and Preparedness at SFRS, said: “Wildfires have the potential to burn for days, as we’ve seen this week in Dumfries and Galloway, and they spread through vast areas of land in our countryside, which is devastating for those who live nearby. “Our firefighters will continue to work with local landowners and other partners to bring these fires under control. “As the warm and dry weather continues, so too does the risk of wildfire, and so we are asking the public to exercise extreme caution and think twice before using anything involving a naked flame. “Responsible human behaviour can significantly lower the chance of a wildfire starting, so it is crucial that people act safely in rural environments and always follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.” A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 8.40pm on Thursday, April 10, to reports of a large area of grass on fire in the Fannyside Road area, Cumbernauld. “At its height, Operations Control mobilised six fire appliances where firefighters are still working to extinguish a fire affecting three large areas of grass. “There are no reported casualties and six fire appliances and other resources remain at the scene.” Robert Paterson concocted his revenge plot against a guard at HMP Saughton and directed men to supply drugs into HMP Edinburgh. Robert Paterson, 45, was serving a life sentence in HMP Edinburgh when he claimed to fall unwell in the early hours of November 15, 2022. The High Court in Edinburgh heard he told a staff member that he needed an ambulance because he had taken cocaine and thought he was having a heart attack.  But judge Lord Harrower heard the guard grew suspicious – he saw Paterson remove a sim card from a mobile phone and swallow it.  The officer was also concerned about Paterson’s history – he was jailed in 2012 on a conspiracy charge – this related to a plan involving him escaping jail while being treated for health issues in hospital.  The officer’s suspicious were heightened further because an ambulance had arrived at the Edinburgh jail which hadn’t been ordered by prison staff.  The court heard how this prompted the guard to agree with paramedics to keep Paterson for observations at the jail before sending the inmate to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary at 8am. Doctors then found that Paterson had seven bags of cocaine present in his abdomen which medics thought might burst and put his health at risk. This caused them to remove the drugs.  On Friday, prosecutor Alan Cameron KC told the court of how Paterson reacted to what happened to him when he returned to jail.  “He was extremely unhappy about the delay in him being sent to hospital and subsequently made a complaint about the prison authorities in which he claimed that he had been told at hospital that he was lucky to be alive,” the prosecutor said. “He also formed a personal animus towards the officer whom he blamed for the delay in him being sent to hospital.  “Ultimately, he decided that he would seek revenge upon the officer by having him seriously assaulted.  “To advance this plan, he made contact with people both within and outside the prison – the latter by means of non-prison issue mobile telephones which he possessed.” The court heard that prison officials became increasingly concerned about Paterson’s behaviour. In February 2023, police started bugging his cell. Mr Cameron added: “Over that period, Paterson repeatedly made reference to the man who left me to die and made it clear that he did not intend to let the matter lie. He spoke to several people about different aspects of his plan.  “Much of the discussion centred around a handgun to which he could provide access and the need to find the right size of ammunition for that gun. “He identified an individual who said that they were willing to assault the officer for him and discussed with that individual the requirement for a vehicle and a driver to assist him.  “On one occasion, he was heard to say that he identified someone to do the staff member.  “Fortunately, the police intervened and no attempt was actually made to assault the officer who was entirely unaware of the matter until told about it by Scottish Prison Service staff and police.” The story emerged on Friday after Paterson pleaded guilty to a charge which stated that between January 28, and February 14, in 2023, Paterson directed men called Sean McGregor and Donald Stone and “others” to supply drugs into HMP Edinburgh. He also directed Stone and McGregor and others to “rob others of controlled drugs, watches, and a sum of money”. Paterson also admitted directing “others” to assault the prison officer and for “that purpose” obtain a handgun, ammo and a vehicle.  Stone pleaded guilty to being involved “in serious organised crime and did agree with others to do something you knew or suspected or ought reasonably to have known or suspected would enable or further the commission of serious organised crime”. He was going to supply drugs into HMP Edinburgh.  McGregor admitted to a charge of arranging to carry out an “assault and robbery of drugs from others” and he was going to pass on the address of the property in order “to facilitate” the robbery.  Paterson was given life for shooting dead a man in a Cumbernauld street in 2008.  In 2012, he was given another three years by judge Lord Bracadale at the High Court in Glasgow.  On that occasion, the court heard how two other men intended to help Paterson escape from custody on January 17, 2012 during a visit from Shotts Prison to Wishaw Hospital. But the police were tipped off about the scheme and used undercover surveillance to foil it. On Friday, prosecutors told the court that Stone and McGregor’s roles were picked up during the time police were bugging Paterson’s cell.  The advocate depute said there was “routine discussion” of supplying drugs by others “at his direction”. The scam being headed by Paterson involved valium tablets and evidence suggested that “thousands of pounds” were “changing hands”.  Police learned that Stone was supplying drugs in the Bathgate area and that he was supplying drugs into Saughton on Paterson’s behalf.  “The supplying of drugs into HMP Edinburgh was also discussed in some detail. In the period leading up to February 7, 2023, Stone found two women who were prepared to visit the prison in possession of drugs,” prosecutor Mr Cameron said. “Paterson identified prisoners within the prison who were prepared to receive them during visits and photographs were exchanged so that they would recognise each other.  “The women and the prisoners were to be paid for their participation by the receipt of drugs.” Police then learned of McGregor’s involvement in the racket.  The court heard that on February 4, McGregor made contact with Paterson to say that he and other men had gone to a cannabis farm with the intention of carrying out a robbery.  Mr Cameron added: “They pretended to be police officers which caused the owners to flee and they took a quantity of cannabis.  “Paterson agreed to buy the cannabis from McGregor and subsequently made contact with another individual to arrange that.” Police learned that Paterson received a phone call from an “unknown individual” who told him about a property which housed “several kilograms of cannabis and cocaine” and “five high value watches”.  Mr Cameron added: “The suggestion was that the individuals within the property could be robbed of these items and the profits shared. “Paterson subsequently made contact by telephone with other people with the intention of having them attend at the property to rob it.  “One of these individuals was Sean McGregor who agreed to participate.  “No such robbery took place before the police action the following day.” Judge Lord Harrower deferred sentence on the trio until May 30, 2025, calling for background reports. Defence advocates Thomas Ross KC, John Scullion KC and Michael Anderson KC will address the court with their mitigations on that date. Eran Yehudae, and his wife, were putting the 25 dogs and ten cats in their care to bed when they had to evacuate. Eran Yehudae, and his wife, who own Crowbank Kennel, were putting the 25 dogs and ten cats in their care to bed when they had to evacuate. As they noticed smoke and flames getting closer to their property, they decided to evacuate, including moving the dozens of animals in their care. “It was really daunting, thankfully we called our neighbour, who was able to help us begin moving them all over,” Mr Yehudae told STV News. The couple had to make multiple trips back and fourth to get all the animals to safety, and said at one point there were flames on the road. “It was very scary. Flames were basically on the road. It was like out of a movie. We had to drive through them to get to the remaining dogs,” he added. Mr Yehudae said they were working on the evacuation from 10pm until around 1am, and worried they may not be able to get all the animals out. “We ended up getting escorted by firefighters who helped us get all the animals to safety, which was really good,” he said. Mr Yehudae described the experience as “quite an ordeal” and worried they wouldn’t have a home to return to. “It was really scary, it’s not just out business, it’s our home too so we had to decide within minutes what to grab, unsure whether the flames would reach our home,” he added. “It’s the animals too, you get attached to them as you’re looking after them and want to make sure they’re safe.” The flames didn’t reach the kennel and home, and the couple were able to get back in at around 6am on Friday. However, the fire remains ongoing, with Scottish Fire and Rescue Services still at the scene. Mr Yehudae said they may have to evacuate the area again. Police Scotland confirmed Fannyside Road remains closed between Forest Road and the B803 Greengairs Road, due to the blaze. “There are no reported casualties, and six fire appliances and other resources remain at the scene.” A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Fannyside Road is currently closed between Forest Road, Cumbernauld, and the B803 Greengairs Road due to a wildfire on adjacent grassland. “Police Scotland was made aware of the fire around 9.40pm on Thursday, April 10. “The incident is ongoing, and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service remains in attendance. “Members reputation Cumbernauld once again delivered the perfect backdrop for four races replete with drama The sight of a couple of hundred spectators racing from one side of the course to the other to watch the finish of the Senior Men and Non Binary race – roaring as they ran – will live long in the memory It felt like scenes not seen since Callum Hawkins raced at Holyrood Park a few years ago (while noting the higher level of competition) was propelling Central AC to six-in-a-row and close to the line by that stage as Andrew McGill of Cambuslang and Finlay Ross-Davie of Edinburgh Uni Hare and Hounds staged a dramatic battle for the silvers ‘There was such a noise and excitement that I actually turned my head to try and watch them battle towards the finish on the other side of the run-in to superb 12:13 to guide Fife AC to fourth place in the Senior Men’s race Well done to Glasgow Frontrunners who competed in that race as our first Non Binary team in the National XC Relays The Senior Women’s race held the intrigue throughout but the constant was Edinburgh AC We highlighted in PB magazine very recently the strong group and ending a seven-in-a-row streak for those in green – Edinburgh Uni Hare and Hounds – was clearly on the minds of those representing the capital club Challenges from the likes of Inverclyde and Shettleston initially then began to fade and Edinburgh AC played their cards well with Nancy Scott leading off (and building a lead) followed by Beth Ansell Nancy’s excellent run was underlined by 14:13 in the individual leg times Kirsty Walker never looked likely to relinquish a winning position ‘We are quite competitive,’ said Beth in what may have been something of an understatement ‘There’s a strong team spirit at the club and among us at the moment and we feel we are well suited for relay events and team events almost whatever the surface or conditions.’ Kirsty said: ‘It was a solid lead the team handed over to me and We’re thrilled to win and end that run from Edinburgh Uni There were some different orders from teams but we felt we could be strong on all four legs and that’s showed.’ Giffnock North took the Women’s Masters race thanks to the efforts of Yvonne McNairn Garscube took silver medals and Kilmarnock Harriers were third our champions are Edinburgh AC via performances by Janet Dunbar Completing that podium were Kirkinitlloch pumps and and a high reach appliance were still at the scene at 6.30am. Emergency services, including six fire appliances, six ambulances, a trauma team and a resuscitation rapid response unit, were sent to Blairlinn industrial estate in Cumbernauld at around 2.30pm on Tuesday. The incident happened at the Moock Environmental Solutions factory, a toner cartridge recycler, which has operated in Cumbernauld for over 25 years. Footage showed thick black smoke billowing into the sky as the blaze engulfed a single-storey building. Eyewitnesses could smell fumes from the fire miles away. Six casualties, all men aged between 20 and 66, were taken to hospitals by the Scottish Ambulance Service for treatment. Five patients were taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and one was transported to University Hospital Monklands. Their condition is not believed to be life-threatening. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said two pumps and and a high-reach appliance were still at the scene at on Wednesday morning. People in the Greenfaulds area of Cumbernauld were advised to stay indoors and keep their doors and windows shut because of smoke on Tuesday evening. Morgan Collins, who was working in the estate at the time the fire started, described the moments after he heard a “loud bang”. Police Scotland said emergency services were likely to remain at the scene for some time as the incident remains ongoing. Sergeant Kevin Anderson said: “A multi-agency response remains ongoing and we continue to ask members of the public to avoid the area at this time. “The fire is contained to within the industrial premises. However, we would continue to ask residents in the Greenfaulds area to keep their windows and doors closed and to stay indoors due to smoke. “An investigation will be carried out in due course to establish the cause of the fire.” A spokesperson for Moock Environmental Solutions thanked emergency services for their swift response to the “devastating” fire. “Emergency services responded swiftly, and the situation is under control. Staff made it out safely and were treated at the scene. Some taken to hospital for further checks,” the statement read. “There is perhaps some confusion in the press about what we do. We are a toner cartridge recycler who break down toner cartridges to their components metal, plastic and is further recycled with our granulated plastic being used in composite decking and the recovered toner powder is turned into pigment where it is sent to be mixed into concrete bricks.” It added: “Our priority is the safety and well-being of all of those affected. We are cooperating fully with the authorities and will provide updates as more information becomes available. “Thank you for your understanding at this difficult time.” A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 2.35pm on Tuesday, April 1, to reports of a building fire at 60 Mid Road, Blairlinn Industrial Estate, Cumbernauld. “Operations Control initially mobilised two appliances to the scene and on arrival firefighters found one single storey building well alight. “A further four appliances, two high reach appliances and specialist resources were mobilised to support firefighting crews. “Six casualties were passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service. “Two appliances, two high reach appliances and firefighting crew still remain on scene this morning, Wednesday April 2, as they continue to control the fire.” SIX people have been injured after a fire erupted at a Scots industrial estate Fire crews raced to tackle the major blaze after it broke out in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, on Tuesday afternoon. Footage from Blairlinn Industrial Estate shows thick black smoke billowing into the sky. Footage shows thick black smoke billowing into the sky as the blaze engulfs a single-storey building. Firefighters passed six casualties, all men aged between 20 and 66, into the care of the ambulance service. Five patients were transported to Glasgow Royal Infirmary and one patient was transported to University Hospital Monklands. The extent of their injuries is unknown. Police Scotland have asked the public in the Greenfaulds area of Cumbernauld to stay indoors at this time. Morgan Collins, who was working in the estate at the time the fire started, described the moments after he heard a “loud bang”. “You could see it for miles”, he said. “The area was cordoned off and surrounding units were being evacuated.” “You could feel the heat from the flames.” A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 2.35pm on Tuesday, April 1, to reports of a building fire at Blairlinn Industrial Estate in Cumbernauld. “A further four appliances were mobilised to the scene. “Six casualties have been passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service and firefighting crews remain in attendance.” A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 14:55 to attend an incident at Blairlinn Industrial Estate, Cumbernauld. A new high-energy dance-theatre production starring local secondary pupils will be staged at Cumbernauld Theatre this week Thank U, Next explores the world of cosplay – a TikTok trend in which people dress up as characters – to better understand the meaning of identity and liberty Pupils from Cumbernauld Academy have been working on the National Theatre of Scotland production – created by 21 Common – for the past few weeks Next is about young people and their struggles growing up It looks at the different things that they hide behind and the ways in which they express themselves “I think it’s important that both teenagers and parents come along and see the show as the younger people will be able to identify with the struggles the characters are going through and the parents will be able to see this too and hopefully better understand some of these issues “One of the big things is cosplay; the production uses this to hide behind who we really are pop music and dance – so it’s a lot of fun too.” Twenty pupils from the school are participating in the performances while others are involved in front-of-house duties decided to get involved in the project after his drama teacher it’s not the usual sort of thing that I’d usually get involved with,” he admitted “But I’ve been trying to push myself to get out and challenge myself a bit more and I’ve stayed with the project since then “It’s been intense and a lot of hard work – we don’t get finished rehearsals until 7 pm most evenings and my friends have been making fun of me and asking me what on earth I’m doing but it’s been so worthwhile and a lot of fun I’ve got to meet new people and made lots of new friends.” Isabella added: “Social media is such a big thing for young people growing up these days it affects how you think about yourself when you see people looking in certain ways or doing amazing things – it can bring your confidence down quite a lot But being part of this production has helped me to challenge some of my thinking Next asks what it is like growing up in a world where you can quite literally be anything you want to be And what happens when you must face your true self in the mirror Director of Creative Engagement at the National of Scotland has nothing but praise for the young people involved: “The way in which the pupils from Cumbernauld Academy have responded has been incredible; they have been fantastic to work with “They have just thrown themselves into it with such enthusiasm and what has been incredibly heartening is how pupils from different year groups got to know each other “They have treated each other with so much respect and generosity – it’s been wonderful to witness and be a part of.” Thank U, Next is at Lanternhouse Theatre/Cumbernauld Academy 10 and 11 October; Grangemouth High School Underhand methods employed by Communication Workers Union (CWU) officials to impose “USO reform” pilots at 37 delivery units across the UK have been exposed by events at Cumbernauld The delivery office of around 40 staff is scheduled to become only the second unit to begin implementing the pilot scheme following Newton Mearns (also just outside Glasgow) three weeks ago Royal Mail’s pilots are introducing an “Optimised Delivery Model” (ODM) that was agreed by the CWU in December CWU Deputy General Secretary Martin Walsh signed an “Enablers Letter” in December headlined: “Working together to create the right platform to introduce USO Reform” The pilot scheme is a dress rehearsal for £300 million in cuts and mass job destruction via the dismantling of six-day-a-week letter deliveries to 32 million UK households The scheme is being overseen by joint working groups of managers and union officials Workers at Cumbernauld say they have been included in the USO reform pilots without their consent They are angered at CWU local and regional officials who have brow-beaten and threatened workers to accept the pilots and Royal Mail’s ODM CWU members at Cumbernauld called for a workplace meeting in January after they learnt in December that their office was included in the pilot scheme A worker at Cumbernauld told WSWS: “Some of the members demanded a meeting to discuss their concerns eventually agreed to hold a meeting at the end of the week A workplace meeting lobbied for by members was held on Wednesday 22 January But workers say the CWU workplace rep ensured the meeting was not advertised and the date was only confirmed that morning More than twenty postal staff were in attendance Those who spoke said the new delivery model was “unworkable” and their present duties “unmanageable.” the CWU workplace rep blocked a motion to boycott the pilot arguing that workers should address their grievances on an individual basis Another worker at Cumbernauld told WSWS: “A colleague proposed a motion to boycott the pilot He said that Cumbernauld postal workers should not participate in a trial to lead a charge to eliminate jobs His motion called for a no-confidence vote in CWU officials who have signed up to this without the consent of members Those who were present say the CWU workplace rep suppressed the motion insisting the meeting could not discuss it or put it to a vote The rep claimed the motion would lead to his sacking by management “The motion put forward what the CWU should be doing if it was really addressing our concerns and standing up for our jobs and the mail service What’s the point of being in a union if we don’t even have the right to debate or vote on a motion or oppose attacks on our terms and conditions Thousands of jobs are on the line across Royal Mail…” the CWU rep appealed to members that by taking part in the pilot they could prove it was “unworkable.” He claimed he was in contact with senior CWU officials about this Outdoor Assistant Secretary Tony Bouch and Walsh would be invited to attend a joint union-management briefing about the pilot to be held at Cumbernauld That workplace “briefing” was held the following Tuesday with a display of unity between management and CWU reps and a couple spoke in opposition to the changes One colleague said it was ‘an Amazon type race to the bottom’ ‘It’s not the members fault that Royal Mail gave away all the money to shareholders’ “The management representatives just agreed with the CWU telling everyone: “your union has agreed [to the pilots].” Workers say there was no clear explanation provided about the ODM and its impact on work practices It was stated that delivery frames would be re-configured based on the reduced mail service and a new route coverage would proceed based on a revised start date moved back from February to March No senior CWU officials showed their face at the briefing But it later transpired that one of those standing side-by-side with management was a CWU Divisional Rep He did not introduce himself during the briefing but went around the workplace afterwards telling postal staff that unless the pilot was accepted they could be out of a job and the company would go bankrupt the union moved to impose new duty patterns promoted as a pathway to having additional Saturdays off This has become a Trojan horse for dismantling the USO While the CWU denied workers at Cumbernauld a vote on the pilots they organised a workplace ballot in February offering three new delivery “options” with the majority voting for two Saturdays off in five (the same as Newton Mearns) This is what Bouch described as “engagement” with the membership after his flying visit to pilot sites in Scotland more than three weeks ago Claims about “engagement” have been refuted by postal workers, as reported by WSWS delivery staff have reported widespread mail failures and impossible workloads while their colleagues at Cumbernauld are facing the same even before the pilot goes live (the start date has been pushed back a third time The number of duty pattern “options” for the USO pilots has now been extended from three to seven following an Addendum to the terms of reference agreed between Walsh and Royal Mail executives For the privilege of additional Saturdays off it states the following “scenarios” may apply: “Longer working days later finish times for full time and part time colleagues: less opportunities for part time to become full time and shorter rest periods in some weeks in the rota.” The pilot scheme is a rigged exercise between Royal Mail Ofcom and CWU officials to rubber stamp £300 million of cost cutting to make thousands of jobs losses Postal workers must take back control from the union apparatus based on a new leadership of trusted fighters on the shopfloor and a rank-and-file network to break the pro-company grip of the CWU bureaucracy The Postal Workers Rank and File Committee (PWRFC) has called for workplace meetings to halt the pilots and begin a fightback to resolve postal workers’ grievances: unmanageable workloads This resistance must be extended across all 1,200 delivery offices Postal workers’ rights must take priority over billionaires like Daniel Kretinsky who are taking a wrecking ball to the USO If the company’s owners are incapable of providing secure jobs and decent pay then Royal Mail must be placed under public ownership with the wealth created by postal workers used to improve the mail service The Labour urging members of the public to avoid the area and keep their doors and windows closed due to smoke. Emergency services, including six fire engines, six ambulances, a trauma team and a resuscitation rapid response unit, were sent to Blairlinn industrial estate in Cumbernauld after a fire broke out around 2.30pm on Tuesday. Firefighters battled flames through the night, with two pumps and a high-reach appliance still at the scene on Wednesday morning. The incident happened at the Moock Environmental Solutions factory, a toner cartridge recycler which has operated in Cumbernauld for over 25 years. A spokesperson for the force said on Wednesday afternoon: “A multi-agency response remains ongoing following a fire at a business premises on an industrial estate on Mid Road in Cumbernauld that was reported around 3pm on Tuesday, April 1. “The fire is contained within the premises, and the public is asked to avoid the area at this time. “We continue to advise local residents to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke. “An investigation will be carried out in due course to establish the cause of the fire.” “A further four appliances, two high-reach appliances and specialist resources were mobilised to support firefighting crews. “Two appliances, two high reach appliances and firefighting crew still remain on scene this morning, Wednesday, April 2, as they continue to control the fire.” Cumbernauld Theatre Trust warns it is facing closure, putting 44 jobs at risk and jeopardising opportunities for future performers. Cumbernauld Theatre Trust say they are at risk of closure, putting 44 jobs in danger and jeopardising opportunities for the next generation of performers. It comes after Creative Scotland announced the recipients of its Multi-Year Funding allocations, a funding block which had been frozen last year. Despite being a regular recipient in the past, Cumbernauld Theatre’s application for £650,000 a year over the next three years was rejected – money they say is essential to their ability to plan future programmes and support staff. “This decision has come as a complete surprise to us,” said CEO Sarah Price. “It was a really rigorous application process and the funding is essential for us to operate as a producing theatre.” She added: “The rejection was based on a technicality and not at all on the quality of our work or the value that we provide to the community. “From Creative Scotland’s feedback it appears that our application has not been assessed in full and that crucial evidence around our performance and what we do has not even been looked at.” Four years ago the theatre moved into Lanternhouse, a newly built space on the Cumbernauld Academy campus and owned by North Lanarkshire Council. The theatre has been backed by some of Scotland’s most recognisable entertainers who say say it’s an important platform for young performers. One of the prominent voices supporting Cumbernauld is The Singing Kettle’s Artie Trezise. He told STV News: “I think I started playing at Cumbernauld when I was in my early twenties and it was a great place to start. “You need small places to start before you can take on the big places. And they were always very supportive and I’ll tell you something, going around theatres there’s always somebody who started in Cumbernauld.” He added: “Let’s get behind them and make sure that the people of Cumbernauld have a facility that’s supported and that they don’t have to come all the way into Glasgow to come to a show.” In a statement, the theatre said: “At this critical time, we need our community more than ever. Cumbernauld Theatre has always been more than just a venue – it is a space where people come together, where creativity flourishes, and where stories are shared. “We are calling on our audiences, supporters, and stakeholders to stand with us as we fight for the future of our theatre.” The decision was raised by MSP Mark Griffin on Thursday who asked John Swinney if the Scottish Government would review the decision. Swinney said he was “well aware” of the case. He said “these decisions are taken by Creative Scotland independently of government” but that he “does recognise the enormous disappointment that will be experienced” The chief executive of Creative Scotland is due to meet with the theatre next week. A spokesperson for the arts funding body said: “Sadly, not all organisations’ applications were successful in meeting the criteria and some have therefore been unsuccessful in their application for Multi-Year Funding.   Those organisations have received copies of their assessments. “While we don’t discuss individual applications, we understand how disappointing this is for those applicants, including Cumbernauld Theatre. “To support these organisations, we are providing access to significant Transition Funding and other potential sources of future support.” A spokesperson for North Lanarkshire Council said: “The funding announcement from Creative Scotland was extremely disappointing for Cumbernauld Theatre. We will be holding discussions with the theatre to fully understand the implications.” Partick Thistle striker Thomas Horn has joined West of Scotland League First Division side Cumbernauld United on loan until the end of the season The 17-year-old product of the Partick Thistle Youth Academy started a two-year modern apprenticeship with the club in the summer that has saw him training with the First Team squad on a full-time basis Injury hindered Thomas’ opportunities in the early portion of the season but he recently returned to action in our recent Youth Cup tie against Bank’s O’Dee The  loan move to the Guy’s Meadow club until the end of the season provides the perfect opportunity for the attacker to gain experience in a competitive environment Partick Thistle manager Kris Doolan said: “This is a great opportunity for Thomas to get minutes under his belt and I am sure he will enjoy the opportunities he will get at Cumbernauld.” “We have had other boys out loan this season and playing competitively aids their development positively.” Moock Environmental Solutions, which breaks down printer cartridges, was engulfed by flames on Tuesday. Fire crews remained at the scene of Moock Environmental Solutions throughout Thursday, and one appliance was reported to be still at the scene on Friday. Police Scotland said an investigation will be carried out in due course to establish the cause of the fire. The incident happened at Moock Environmental Solutions, a toner cartridge recycler which has operated in Cumbernauld for over 25 years. The company said it was an “unprecedented incident”. “Moock Environmental Solutions have been operating successfully for over 25 years in Cumbernauld,” a spokesperson said. “Emergency services responded swiftly, and the situation is under control. Staff made it out safely and were treated at the scene. Some taken to hospital for further checks. “We would like to thank everyone that responded, specifically to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Ambulance Service for their prompt assistance. “We are a toner cartridge recycler who break down toner cartridges to their components metal, plastic and is further recycled with our granulated plastic being used in composite decking and the recovered toner powder is turned into pigment where it is sent to be mixed into concrete bricks. “Our priority is the safety and well-being of all of those affected. We are cooperating fully with the authorities and will provide updates as more information becomes available. “Thank you for your understanding at this difficult time.” A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 2.35pm on Tuesday, April 1, to reports of a building fire at Mid Road, Blairlinn Industrial Estate, Cumbernauld. “One fire appliance remains at the scene this afternoon, Friday, April 4.” The Centre Cumbernauld will also be brought down to make way for a new town hub. In the first step in North Lanarkshire’s 15-year plan to completely regenerate the town centre, Fleming House, a local landmark, will be razed to the ground. The Centre Cumbernauld shopping centre will also be demolished to make way for a new town hub with education, health, community, and leisure facilities, public transport improvements, and modern retail and commercial outlets. An exhibition showing how the town centre could look through concept designs ran for six weeks in Cumbernauld Library earlier this year, and visitors were asked to comment on the proposals. More than 1,600 people visited the consultation pages online, with 263 surveys completed and 438 people discussing the plans with council officers at the library exhibition. “Fleming House has been a landmark in the town centre for many years, and its demolition signals the start of our plans for the new future for Cumbernauld,” council leader Jim Logue said. “Our recent consultation has given us valuable feedback from residents and businesses on what facilities and services are needed, and this will inform our detailed designs for the redevelopment over the next few years. “Thank you to everyone who visited the exhibition and viewed the plans online. This was only the first consultation stage with more opportunities for local residents to be involved as we develop the Cumbernauld Town Masterplan.” The council anticipates no impact on the surrounding roads and car parks during the demolition, which is expected to be completed by summer 2025.
