Dalkeith will be out to set the record straight against a new-look Strathaven Ravens side in the Women’s National Bowl final on Sunday after falling agonisingly short in the final moment of the 2024 final
Marr defeated Dalkeith 36-29 in a blockbuster match on the Murrayfield campus back pitches
where Dalkeith centre Rachael McIntosh was player of the match
scoring four tries on the day in a losing effort
This year’s final will also take place on the Murrayfield campus back pitches, with a 12pm kick off – directly before the Scotland Women versus Italy match at Hive Stadium. The trophy presentations from this match will take place at half time of the international match. Tickets to both the international match and the Bowl can be purchased through this link.
Both Dalkeith and the Ravens went unbeaten in the pool stages, Dalkeith couldn’t be stopped by Berwick (63-12), Lasswade (83-5), Dunfermline (42-20) or Mid Argyll (102-19). The Ravens defeated Gala (36-15), Caledonian Thebans (24-12), and Carrick (17-5) on the way to securing their berth in the final.
Dalkeith head coach Steven Halliday said his side have been working hard and improving game by game.
“We experienced the Bowl final last season and were on the losing side, so the team have been determined to try and reverse that situation this season. It would cap off what has been a brilliant second season for the squad.”
While Ravens head coach Barry Martin said he was proud of his side, which only started in February 2024.
“Who would have thought that a year down the line we would have a squad numbering almost 40 and be here, at Murrayfield, competing for the National Bowl?
“I speak for the whole coaching team when I say that we are so proud of the team, the effort to turn up consistently in all weathers and give their all to a common cause.
Ravens captain Rachel Rawlinson said while she is hoping for a Ravens victory, women from all walks and stages of life have “come together for the love of the sport”.
“No matter the outcome today, the women have poured their hearts and souls into this team and should be incredibly proud of themselves for making it here.
“We are of course hoping for a Strathaven Ravens win but ultimately, we want to show off the growth and experience we have gained over the last year. Bring it on.”

A lodge at Blenheim Palace gives an example of how Dalkeith holiday accommodation could look
A plan to build up to 200 holiday lodges within Dalkeith Country Park will help sustain the estate for the future and boost the local economy
The proposals are set to have a first look from Midlothian councillors at a meeting of their planning committee next week
Buccleuch Estates says the move into holiday accommodation will provide ‘vital income’ towards its continued stewardship of the country park
In their design statement for the lodges they say more investment is needed in the commercial side of the park to attract people all year round and ensure its future
They say: “Holiday lodge accommodation offers an important commercial opportunity for the estate
given the natural beauty and accessibility of its parkland
“Developed sympathetically within the landscape at an appropriate scale
it would contribute vital income to Buccleuch’s stewardship programme and provide a valuable economic benefit to the local economy
The proposed site for the lodges lies between Salters Road on the East and the River South Esk on the west over nearly 42 hectares of land
In their proposal the applicants say the lodges will be designed to blend in to the natural landscape and will be energy efficient and use eco-friendly material
There are also plans to reduce their footprint by off site construction to deliver them in sections to reduce onsite work and environmental impact
They include an image of a lodge retreat cabin at Blenheim Palace as an example of the type proposed
The Pre Application Notice will go before planning committee next week for councillors to comment on ahead of any plans being formally submitted

Dalkeith were not to be denied retribution from the result of the 2024 Women’s National Bowl final
when they dispatched newly formed women’s side Strathaven Ravens on the Murrayfield back pitches to win the Bowl
Dalkeith scrum half Amy MacNamara scored two tries and was involved in everything for the home side
as the Edinburgh side won the match 43 – 12
but windy Sunday midday kick off on the Murrayfield campus back pitches greeted the two sides
as referee Alex Haskett gave the nod for Strathaven’s Caitlin Watt to get the match underway
it looked like Margaret Maitland might have been away down the left wing
but play was brought back for a Ravens forward pass in the build-up
The first penalty of the game came for the Ravens due to a high tackle on Dalkeith’s 22 line
It was tapped quickly by vice-captain Jen Scally
but she was isolated in the following phase
and the home side escaped without punishment
A brilliant attacking play looked certain to open the scoring for the Midlothian side
with centre Rachel McIntosh bursting down the right-hand side
but she was dragged into touch on the 5m line
and Lynsay Halliday bundled over the try line from the resulting lineout drive
banged over the conversion with minimal fuss
patiently poking and prodding their way down the field with ball in hand
The forwards went to work and Kira Turner crashed over the line for a second
but Bell couldn’t add the extras this time
Penalties racked up for the home side as the Ravens built their way down field
A quick tap from Scally saw the away side reach inside the 22
before a popped pass to Fanny Helleux saw the Ravens break their duck
Davidson’s conversion attempt hit the post and crashed away
cashed in on a loose pass and crashed over to bring the home side’s lead back to 10 points with a kick to come
Bell got play back underway and Dalkeith started the brighter side
MacNamara sniped from the back of the scrum and burst through tackles to reach into the Ravens’ 22
but the pop pass to a teammate was lost forward
Dalkeith again made inroads through MacNamara and McIntosh
the latter was stopped just a metre out by a last-ditch tackle
the ball was flicked back to fly half Bell
who spun out of a tackle and crossed over for the home side’s fourth try of the afternoon
Bell couldn’t add the extras to her own try
who crashed over as Dalkeith retreated to not be offside
Lyndsey Gavin caught the conversion nicely and the flags were raised
Dalkeith punctuated their strong performance with a fifth try – again stemming from a scrum in the midfield
Kayleigh Roche went to the blindside and surged into the 22
MacNamara flicked a quick ball out to right winger Claire Brunton
Dalkieth notched a sixth try with about six minutes remaining – once again credit went to MacNamara
She was on the end of a string of passes and crossed over in the left-hand corner
Bell nailed the conversion from the touch line
meaning Dalkeith’s lead extended to 24 points
McIntosh crashed over to put the seal on an equally impressive performance to her scrum half teammate’s
It came from a quick tap and pass from MacNamara
Player of the match: Amy MacNamara (Dalkeith)

As part of its work to make a better future for people and the environment in mining areas in Scotland
the Coal Authority is inviting people in Dalkeith to find out more about our project to improve the River South Esk
We are hosting three community events to provide residents with information and the opportunity to ask questions about the construction of a new mine water treatment scheme in the town
There will also be a chance to talk with our project team
who will explain more about the scheme to remove metals from the mine water flowing from a historical drainage tunnel
that is linked to the extensive underground mine workings in the area
and the second is at Dalkeith Thistle Football Club
we will again be at Dalkeith Thistle Football Club
mine water from the former Bilston Glen colliery has been discharging through Junkies Adit
turning the water an opaque orange due to high levels of dissolved iron picked up from the mine becoming solid as it mixes with air and settles out of the water
In recent years this has become more intense
with the pollution not only damaging the aquatic life in the River South Esk but also affecting the river’s overall ecology
extending as far as the Firth of Forth estuary at Musselburgh
The high concentration of iron and other minerals has become a blight on local beauty spots such as Dalkeith Country Park
with visitors and residents noting the river’s discoloration and the decline in biodiversity
The Coal Authority has developed a solution in the form of an innovative active high-density sludge mine water treatment scheme
designed to address the high concentrations of iron and manganese in the mine water
The scheme will capture polluted water through a new underground structure
and returning the clean water to the River South Esk
restoring the habitat for aquatic life and enhancing the area’s natural beauty
One of the most significant sites was Bilston Glen Colliery
which began operation in 1954 and produced more than one million tons of coal annually before closing in 1989
The closure of these mines led to a significant environmental challenge
The end of coal production also meant that the systems used to pump out water from the mine workings were stopped
This polluted water has since found its way to the surface through on old mine passageway called Old Fordell adit
causing severe pollution in the River South Esk

Geraldine Sanders was employed by Midlothian Sure Start in Dalkeith when she reportedly dragged a two-year-old child by the wrist to the bathroom on February 23.
On August 14, 2023, Sanders allegedly took hold of a four-year-old’s wrist “with force” and told them “you are getting me in trouble”.
The Scottish Social Services Council found that if the nursery teacher’s actions were repeated, it “would risk serious harm to children’.
The Fitness to Practise Panel found: “Your conduct towards two vulnerable children, both of whom had additional needs, was unnecessarily aggressive and physically abusive.
“It showed a serious disregard for their vulnerabilities and their safety and placed both children at risk of serious physical and emotional harm.”
Sanders was removed from the register on November 30.
A spokesperson from Midlothian Sure Start said: “At Midlothian Sure Start we are proud of the high level of quality care we provide to families across Midlothian so we were very upset by the incident in February 2024.
“We would like to stress that we took immediate action to remove the staff member from the centre and after a formal investigation we then terminated the individual’s employment and reported the case to the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC).
“We would like to take this opportunity to apologise again to the child and to their family for the distress caused”.
