Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK (TMUK) has hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a state-of-the-art anaerobic digester at its engine plant in Deeside
The event marked the start of project that will enable the site to be at the global forefront of carbon-zero manufacturing
Construction will start on the new waste-to-energy plant next month and when complete will supply TMUK-D with green electricity and gas directly via underground cabling and piping
The £282 million privately funded venture has been conceived by D SPV
ABRDN and PWC and is being built by bio construct
The plant will be able to handle around 180,000 tonnes of waste a year
converting this into biomethane by anaerobic digestion
This is a natural process in which bacteria break down the waste matter
processed and delivered by a pipeline directly to the engine plant
This will replace the current natural gas supply
avoiding emissions of around 2,900 tonnes of CO2 per year
Compost is a byproduct of the process and this will be given to local farmers
supporting the development of a circular economy in the local area
TMUK-D is set to take a lead in environmental innovation with this project
The plant will be able to end the use of fossil fuel in its processes and serve as a model for sustainable manufacturing within Toyota
the Welsh Cabinet Secretary for North Wales and Transport
said: “TMUK’s Deeside manufacturing plant is an important player in North Wales’s economy
This development is a key step for the plant to decarbonise its high-value manufacturing operation
and the local partnership on which the project is built represents an exciting collaboration for local businesses and the wider community in North Wales.”
I would like to congratulate TMUK Deeside and the whole partnership as this is a significant step towards decarbonising Toyota’s European manufacturing operations
It will make TMUK Deeside a clear benchmark towards carbon-zero manufacturing
The groundbreaking ceremony is a significant milestone on this journey.”
said: This anaerobic digester is a critical step in demonstrating Toyota’s leadership in sustainable manufacturing
which will not only support our aim of Deeside becoming carbon-zero
but also set new benchmarks for the automotive industry’s contribution to combating climate change.”
Toyota’s Deeside facility has a long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability
having already achieved zero waste to landfill and being powered by renewable electricity
This latest investment furthers Toyota’s commitment to achieving global carbon neutrality by 2050

Legat Owen & JLL, acting on behalf of Legal & General, have secured a new tenant for a 100,000 sq ft facility in Deeside.
The property on Tenth Avenue, Zone 3, Deeside comprises a modern detached manufacturing/warehouse facility on a fully contained site of 6.03 acres and has been let to new tenants Boccard UK Limited on a 12-year lease.
Boccard UK is a leading company in the field of engineering and maintenance services. Operating globally across a variety of sectors they hold a key position in today’s industrial marketplace. The facility at Deeside forms part of their strategy to expand their UK business.
Mark Diaper, Director, Legat Owen, who oversaw the letting said:
“Once the outgoing tenant served notice we worked quickly to put the parameters in place for the marketing of Unit 1. Securing Boccard at the outset of the marketing campaign confirms the strong interest in the Deeside area from occupiers and has resulted in a limited vacancy period and minimal interruption for the Landlord.
“The investment by Boccard in North Wales is testament to the skills and facilities in the region. The site will provide them with the expansion they need including manufacturing space and external lay down areas drawing on the existing workforce.”
Douglas McQueen, Managing Director, Boccard UK, said:
“Unit 1 provides us with the platform and flexibility to expand our existing operations in the North Wales and UK market to satisfy our current customers and attract future business opportunities.
“We are underway with an extensive fit-out, including the installation of our digital production management system ‘BocTrack', which is pivotal to our manufacturing efficiency. Additionally, we are undertaking several refurbishment upgrades to make the unit work for our purposes and a showcase for our business.”
“The unit has only had one occupier prior to this letting and provides a quality manufacturing warehouse with good eaves, power and large yard to meet modern requirements. Deeside has excellent links to the national motorway network, rail and ports and is seen as a strong area in the local economy.”
Deeside Industrial Park is regarded as one of the premier industrial locations in the region. The estate has been developed since the 1970s and forms part of the 2,000 acre Deeside industrial area.
