As Denny’s Australian Athletics profile explains Denny enjoyed a childhood with “lots of space to throw things” After switching from rugby league to athletics in his teenage years Denny’s family built him a discus circle on their country property The Australian soon emerged as an international discus talent – finishing fourth at the U20 world championships in 2014 and qualifying for the Rio Games two years later A fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 followed plus gold at the Commonwealth Games a year later Another fourth followed at the 2023 world championships and then at last the elusive podium spot in Paris “I just wanted another look at the group of people who were in that shot – 120 of my closest supporters, family and friends,” he said. “They’ve always been there for me – no matter what, and never doubted what I wanted to do.” The Railway had opened at 4am for locals to watch Denny’s quest for an Olympic medal; he joked that he hoped the tab was not being added to his account. “I’m just a product of people putting their lives into my ability and I’m so grateful for those people,” he said. But less than an hour after winning bronze last August, Denny’s mind had already turned to the future – the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles and the prospect of a home Games in Brisbane in 2024. “I 100% believe there’s still so much more there,” he said. “We’re not done yet.” Denny will have stiff competition in the fight for a world or Olympic title in the years ahead. Alekna, just 22, is the son of two-time Olympic discus champion Virgilijus Alekna; Alekna junior won silver, behind Jamaica’s Rojé Stona, in Paris. In the months before the Games, Alekna set a new world record mark at Throw Town – breaking a record that had stood since the 1980s. On Sunday, he twice topped his own world record. But Denny is not far behind. I think this was a great shakeout off the plane and nice to get a bit of a feel for the place before competing at the World Invitational next week, but at the end of the day I’m still very proud to finally get over that mark and do that before the big competition.” Just Lithuania’s world record-holder Mykolas Alekna, Jürgen Schult of East Germany, Virgilijus Alekna, also of Lithuania, and Estonia’s Gerd Kanter have thrown further than Denny. The 28-year-old will remain in the US this week before next weekend’s Oklahoma Throws series world invitational, where he will be able to challenge Alekna’s mark of 74.35m – set at the same event before the Olympics last year. “With this PB, it’s nice to finally put myself with where I think my training has been, and I’ve just never been really fortunate to get good conditions without tailwinds when I’ve been in good shape,” Denny said. Denny’s journey to the upper echelons of world athletics has been remarkable; he grew up in the small Queensland town of Allora near Toowoomba, population 1,000, launching bean bags as shot puts but mostly playing rugby league until his teenage years. Once his focus shifted, he practised on a homemade discus circle at his family home before going on to win multiple youth championships, and later the national title, two Diamond League titles and Commonwealth Games gold in 2022. In my clinical practice as a psychologist, these discussions are increasingly about gender-based violence. Sadly, I’m no longer shocked at the extent or type of abuse perpetrated against women, families and intimate partners. What surprises me, however, is the silence that often surrounds these behaviours. Too often I find myself saying, “that sounds abusive”, “what you’re describing is coercive control” or “violence isn’t just physical”. Tellingly, people are often quick to downplay a perpetrator’s behaviour. This may be through justification (“they’d had a hard day at work”), minimisation (“it’s just words, they would never hit me”), or self-blame (“I said something that set them off”). It is not somebody else’s problem. And it is never the fault of the person being subjected to itBut I never blame patients for lack of insight about the behaviour inflicted upon them. It is all too easy to judge others’ lives and decisions from a safe distance. Often, people experiencing gender-based violence cannot see the forest for the trees. Enduring an abusive relationship is akin to being caught in a rip; it is impossible for the distressed swimmer to navigate towards the safe waters so easily spotted from the shoreline. Like the occupants of a house remaining fast asleep during a fire; flames are licking at the door but its inhabitants are oblivious to the heat and smoke. Closeness breeds subjectivity, distance brings much-needed objectivity. Abuse loves secrecy. It thrives on shame, and is perpetuated by silence. Abuse wants us all to look away. To turn a blind eye to a bruise, ignore a broken bone, discount a shattered psyche. Isolating victims from friends and family is a common strategy for perpetrators; destroying a person’s social connections is a tragically effective way to implement yet another barrier to leaving a relationship. Repeat statements until the truth is acknowledged “Your partner tracks your location on your phone and you’re ‘not allowed’ to stay out past 9pm?” “All your wage goes into their bank account and then you’re given a small allowance?” Ask them what they would tell you to do Recognition of the behaviour is the first step; a conversation can help a victim of gender-based violence reach this Most of us who have tried to kick a habit – say or even cutting down on screen time – know that it takes a few cycles to fully cease a behaviour but instead opportunities to strengthen resolve That is in no small part thanks to my friend initiating that difficult discussion Say those things that otherwise will go unspoken We must not diffuse the responsibility of talking about gender-based violence And it is never the fault of the person being subjected to it more is needed to resolve the national crisis of gender-based violence But in the absence of a social revolution or a reversal of the collective behaviour of perpetrators a conversation is a practical and accessible starting point This remains incumbent of us all – if you see something Dr Bianca Denny is a clinical psychologist based in Melbourne She is the author of the forthcoming book Talk To Me: Lessons from Patients and their Therapist Get quick access to your favorite articles Manage alerts on breaking news and favorite drivers Make your voice heard with article commenting Denny Hamlin became the first driver to fall out of the race Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway with his day ending in a dramatic oil fire Hamlin was attempting to make up ground after some early miscommunication with the team. "Denny Blaine means a lot to a lot of different folks," Sophie Amity Debs, the co-leader of the Friends of Denny Blaine community group, told King 5 News. "I think it's one of relatively few beaches that are pretty actively inclusive space." Debs said that the park had long been a safe place for people in the LGBT+ community to gather and enjoy the beach. "A lot of folks who want to be out in their bodies, so for a lot queer and trans folks who might face harassment at other types of beaches,” Debs said. “Denny Blaine is just a really safe place." Debs expressed some concerns that the lawsuit would ban nude use of the beach altogether. “I think if you look at the neighbor's lawsuit, it becomes very clear that it involves removing nude use of the beach entirely," the group leader said. Keller disagreed with Debs' concerns, saying the group's lawsuit was focused solely on stopping criminal activity. "This is not anything about getting rid of nudity,” Keller said. “Nudity is legal in Washington state. That's not what this lawsuit says. We're talking about getting rid of illegal and illicit activities, that include masturbation, inappropriate come-ons to people on the neighborhood, men pulling their parts out and asking women if they want to touch them. That is not legal nudity, that's illegal, and that's what we're asking the city to take care of." Both Debs and Keller agreed that working together to improve the park will yield the best results. "What we need to do is make sure that the illegal activity stops,” Keller said. “We're not talking about activities that are legal. I'm sure there's common ground between the two groups." Friends of Denny Blaine hopes that Seattle police officers and park rangers will agree to take part in a training that includes reminders that nudity is not illegal in Washington. The group is planning to host a free "bystander intervention training" on May 18. govt and politics"},{"score":0.78486,"label":"/society/gay life"},{"score":0.760965,"label":"/health and
