FT: Derry City 1-0 St. Patrick's Athletic (19:45)
Image source, InphoImage caption, Mullen netted a second half winner for the Candystripes at the Brandywell
Derry City moved up to third in the Premier Division as they secured a 1-0 win over St. Patrick's Athletic at the Brandywell Stadium.
The visitors started the day top of the table but Daniel Mullen's goal early in the second half was enough to give City a huge three points.
Pat's had the ball in the back of the net twice in a first period short of clear-cut chances but both goals were ruled out for offside.
The Candystripes overtake the Dubliners in the table and are now just one point behind Drogheda at the summit ahead of a trip to Cork City this Friday night.
Following a victory over champions Shelbourne on Friday night, Derry had the chance to claim back-to-back wins for just the second time this season against St. Pat's.
The Candystripes had the lion's share of possession but did see the ball go past Brian Maher twice in the opening half hour. Jake Mulraney and Zach Elbouzedi were both denied by the linesman's flag.
City began to apply pressure before the break with the industrious Adam O'Reilly going closest, firing at Joseph Anang on the volley.
Pat's travelled to Foyleside having lost on each of their last four previous visits and at the start of the second period they found themselves behind again.
O'Reilly threaded a terrific ball through to Mullen, who rounded Anang and rolled the ball into the empty net to send Derry on their way to a third straight win at the Brandywell.
Aidan Keena was a lively introduction for the Saints and his deflected shot from inside the area had Maher scampering across his line to scramble the ball around the post.
Before the final whistle some of the St. Pat's staff became involved in an altercation with home fans behind their dugout and referee Damian McGraith dished out two red cards amid the ugly scenes.

who swapped the corporate life to become a full-time wedding florist
A County Derry entrepreneur who swapped the corporate life to become a full-time wedding florist is set to see her business blossom after receiving help from the government-backed Go Succeed service
harnessing a life-long love of nature and creativity
Based in the village of Park at the foothills of the Sperrins, Louise also operates a studio in south Armagh
allowing the business to cater for customers across the island of Ireland
She threw herself into floristry full-time five years ago after a career in corporate finance that had taken her to London
“I had been living the corporate life and really enjoying it
but I think there was always a part of me that wanted to do something else more creative and where I could really use my hands,” said Louise
“I had been dabbling in floristry for some time and was always putting my hand up to help friends’ weddings and other events
I decided to formalise my hobby by doing three years of night classes to get my Levels one - three in Floristry so I could learn all the techniques and skills required to go professional
I also attended several bespoke courses with florists I admire all over the UK and Ireland to elevate my skills which are necessary to succeed in the luxury wedding market
I still strive to do one or two stand out courses a year to keep up with trends and changing wedding fashions
“It was in 2019 that I decided to really go for it and had booked to exhibit at one of the big shows in Belfast in February 2020
“It was an initial set back but from there
things have just flourished and I am now busier than ever.”
Providing bespoke bouquets and dazzling displays, Louise creates luxury seasonal foliage with touches of herbs
She received guidance from Go Succeed on improving her social media and website presence and recently received a grant enabling Farmgirl Florals to invest in new digital technology that Louise said will take the business to the next level
“Using funding received through the Go Succeed grant
I’ve been able to invest in new technology that will help clients to get a realistic image of how their venue will appear when dressed with flowers,” she said
“We can now overlay photographs in real time with life-like drawing of our planned displays
allowing clients to envisage the finished product
Currently sourcing her flowers from suppliers across Northern Ireland with a mix of imports from Holland, Louise has plans to produce even more blooms locally
She said: “We operate from a small farm where we grow many of the more delicate flowers that go into our displays
even from other suppliers in Northern Ireland
we plan to significantly increase our own local production with recent investment in a new greenhouse enabling us to grow more of our own blooms from seed at our very own cut-flower farm.”
Louise is one of the many entrepreneurs in the local council area to have benefitted and grown from the expert advice and support available from Go Succeed
The services provided are delivered completely free of charge via each of Northern Ireland’s 11 councils
Derry City and Strabane District Council said: “At Derry City and Strabane District Council
we are continually inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit that thrives within our local community
Entrepreneurs like Louise at Farmgirl Florals truly embody this drive and creativity
Her journey from a corporate career to building a flourishing floral business based on passion and purpose is a testament to the incredible talent we have right here in our community
“We are proud to provide a supportive environment
that empowers individuals to take bold steps
pursue their dreams and contribute to the vibrant economic and cultural life of Derry City and Strabane.”

The 40-year-old was previously assistant manager at Dundalk and a scout with the Football Association of Ireland
The Bannsiders will face either Crusaders or Irish Cup finalists Dungannon Swifts in their midweek play-off
Shiels, along with assistant Michael O'Connor, departed the club on Wednesday after one season at the Showgrounds
He guided the club to a fifth-place finish in the Irish Premiership as the club transitioned into full-time football
Sporting director Oran Kearney, who Shiels replaced as manager, also left his role on Thursday.
Kearney had two spells in charge of the Bannsiders either side of a one-season stint in Scotland as St Mirren manager

"I'm also delighted to be bringing Conor Loughrey in alongside me
He's someone I trust and value highly — he'll add real energy and detail to the coaching team."
Executive Chairman and majority shareholder Henry Ross commented: "We're excited to welcome Ruaidhrí to Coleraine at a key moment for the club

a walk from Derry to Crosshaven in County Cork
and he hoped to make it to Strabane - that was the plan - but he made it all the way to Stranorlar
He was immensely proud of his achievement - we all were
His approach to the walk was about taking it easy and chatting
We were to be in Stranorlar by 7pm - we left the Guildhall at 10am
At 11am we hadn't even reached New Buildings and from New Buildings to Strabane
"I managed to keep him distracted enough to forget about the chips
When we got to Strabane he was supposed to get the bus back but he decided he was going to walk all the way to Stranorlar
Even against the advice of his GP and partner Anne
"The weather was good mostly with the occasional shower
but it is a day that will last long in the memory
not only being the first day of a 300 mile walk
"He may be gone and I have many great memories from the times I shared with Eamon
but that day I hold truly close to my heart
My phone wasn't the greatest but they capture many of the important moments
Goal scorers Michael Duffy and Liam Boyce celebrate
Derry City are now within two points of top spot in the Premier Division after a dominating win against champions Shelbourne at the Brandywell.
First half goals from Michael Duffy and Liam Boyce did the damage to Damien Duff's side
who never looked like responding as the hosts held on for three points and a clean sheet.
Tiernan Lynch made four changes to the team which lost so poorly at Waterford last week
with Boyce notably returning to the starting eleven
and both former Norther Ireland internationals played key roles in what was arguably City’s best performance of the season
who won their league title at the Brandywell on their last visit back in November
dominated the ball in the early stages of the game but they fell behind from a straightforward corner on 14 minutes
There was no defender in sight as Michael Duffy arrived unmarked at the back post from Shane Ferguson’s cross
to side-foot in his sixth goal of the season
The goal completely destabilised Shels who could have conceded a second goal within minutes
Ferguson’s delivery was headed away by Sam Bone but only into the path of Ronan Boyce
who hit it first time on the volley and it screamed past a beaten Conor Kearns
Damien Duff was upset with the defending for the opening goal
but he could not believe his eyes as Derry City doubled their lead just past the half hour
Sam Bone dallied on the ball and his clearance was charged down by Liam Boyce
who went through to volley the ball past Kearns to make it 2-0
There was no sign of a response from Shels until the final seconds of the first half when a long ball over the top was brought down superbly by Evan Caffrey on the run and his low effort across goal had to be turned past the post by Brian Maher
Damien Duff made a number of changes to try and get his team back into the game in the second half
their only chance coming from a free-kick 20 yards from goal
but substitute John Marton’s effort was blocked by Carl Winchester
which had worked to great effect for the first hour
continued with the overhaul of the home side’s attack
Robbie Benson and Danny Mullen replacing Duffy
Whyte and Boyce as Lynch’s high energy tactics continued to work to great effect
This was the Candystripes’ first league victory over Shels in three years and their first win at the Brandywell over their Dublin rivals since 2020
only the fifth time in 13 games this season
Derry City can now go top of the Premier Division if they defeat Stephen Kenny’s St
Patrick’s Athletic at the Brandywell on Monday

A man who was blocking a barrier at Strand Road PSNI station and refusing to move told police he was 'waiting for Keir Starmer' has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrates' Court.
Raymond Hugh Fitzpatrick (66) with an address at Ormeau Road in Belfast was charged with disorderly behaviour on January 19.
The court heard that Fitzpatrick approached the barrier at the entrance to the PSNI station hindering access.
He was asked to move on numerous occasions and became abusive to police calling them 'orange b------s'.
Despite warnings the defendant persisted being abusive and was arrested.
District Judge Ted Magill said that the defendant had 133 previous convictions.
He said that during this incident Fitzpatrick was 'extremely intoxicated' which he said was a feature of much of his offending.
The judge said that the police 'have enough to deal with without people like you'.
Funding has been completely pulled from a Derry dance theatre company.
According to Echo Echo dance theatre company, the Arts Council has cut 100% to its annual funding provided by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Annual Funding Programme.
The company said the declined funding of £112,910 would have contributed to three full-time staff salaries and building overheads at Echo Echo Studios for financial year 2025/26.
A statement on its Facebook page on behalf of Echo Echo's board, staff and artists said: "This decision comes as a great shock to all involved in the company.
"We are currently assessing the impact that this cut will have on the future of Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company and our home studios.
"We will be meeting with ACNI to discuss this decision soon.
"This is an immediate existential threat to the company but we expect to continue all of our current programmes and keep Echo Echo Studios open and staffed for at least the next three months as we consider all of our options.
"The company has no outstanding creditors and sufficient unrestricted funds for this period.
"We will be reaching out to all of our key stakeholders to discuss the impact of this decision in the coming days.
"We will appreciate your support in the days ahead."
A spokesperson for the Arts Council said: "As an Arts Council client and multi-grant recipient, Echo Echo Dance Company has accessed funding from many of our programmes, including the Annual Funding Programme (AFP).
"Unfortunately, with disappointment this year Echo Echo did not receive 25-26 AFP funding. We are seeking a meeting with Echo Echo on their immediate plans.
"We want to reassure the dance community in Northern Ireland that public investment in dance in the Derry City and the North-West region remains a priority and we will be working to ensure that provision for dance continues.
"The Arts Council hopes to announce details of this year’s 2025-26 AFP clients once our annual funding allocation is known."

Derry City moved up to fifth in the Premier Division with a 2-0 win over Shelbourne at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.
Michael Duffy opened the scoring inside 15 minutes with a controlled finish.
Liam Boyce pounced to double Derry's lead just after half an hour.
The Candystripes saw out the victory comfortably in the second period as reigning champions Shels failed to threaten a comeback.
A disappointing defeat at Waterford last Friday night, after back-to-back victories, perhaps typified Derry's start to life under Tiernan Lynch.
Even still the Candystripes came into the match with the champions just three points off top spot and Lynch spoke in the week of this being the ideal game to put things right.
The home side started brightly and were ahead inside a quarter of an hour when Duffy arrived at the back post to meet Shane Ferguson's beautifully flighted cross and slammed home his sixth goal of the season.
Shels made the trip to the Brandywell off the back of three successive draws, but their chances of restoring parity quickly dwindled.
An error at the back allowed Boyce to tighten the Candystripes' grip and he made no mistake as the hosts went in at half-time 2-0 in front.
Damien Duff's men clinched the title on the final day of last season during their last visit to the Brandywell, but a revival after the break never seemed on the cards.
Instead, City managed the game through to seal their third win in four on home soil.
Having defeated the champions, Lynch's men host league leaders St. Patrick's Athletic on Monday.
The BT workers affected by the company’s shock announcement it was closing its Derry operation will receive a redundancy payment comprising one month’s pay for every 12 months they have worked for the company
this will be capped at 12 months - a maximum of one year’s payout - meaning the many employees who have worked for BT for longer than 12 years will receive no additional payment
140 people have been made redundant on Wednesday as a result of the BT action
while a limited number have been offered relocation to Belfast
Communications Workers’ Union (CWU) national officer Tracey Fussey said BT’s decision to close operations in Derry and offshore the work to India had “left workers and the local community stunned”
Ms Fussey added: “After the loss of hundreds of [BT] jobs at Enniskillen and Belfast in the past year
this comes as yet another blow to communities already suffering from a lack of investment and opportunity
“CWU members are hugely disappointed with the decision
and will be doing all they can to protect jobs and identify suitable alternatives.”
Derry City and Strabane District councillor Shaun Harkin (People Before Profit) said the BT announcement had come as a “massive shock”
Speaking at April’s full Council meeting on Wednesday afternoon
he added: “My first thoughts are with the workers and their families because this could be devastating news for them
“I am sure they are sitting worried about their futures and I think that we as a Council should accept the opportunity to meet immediately with BT management to convey our shock at this decision; I think it is a disgraceful decision
It will suck decent paying jobs out of the city
“We stood on picket lines recently with the BT workers who were fighting for better wages and to defend their terms and conditions and all of a sudden now we have a decision by a corporate management board
to basically shut down a workplace with 140 workers
“I think we should do everything we can to defend
Has it looked at the impact it will have on the workers there
We have a lot of questions for BT management about its decision to target Derry and to strip jobs out of Derry,” said Cllr Harkin
who added the decision was driven by 'maximising profits'
for the communities the workers live in and no care for this city.”
Alderman Julie Middleton (DUP) said the BT decision was “devastating for the workers and their families
not least for the amount of years of service that we have given BT from our city”
'BT job losses devastating for Derry' - Colum Eastwood
Cllr Rory Farrell (SDLP) said Wednesday was a “really
“This is a devastating blow to the local economy and the people and the families who are currently employed in BT
“What makes it worse and what makes it harder for this city to deal with this massive
massive jobs blow is the lack of good quality
well-paid jobs across this city and district,” said Cllr Farrell
Councillors subsequently voted in favour of a motion expressing concern at the BT decision to close its Derry office with the loss of 140 jobs
The motion also sought “an urgent meeting with BT’s Corporate Management to discuss the decision and the impact it will have on the local economy”
Foyle MLA Pádraig Delargy (Sinn Féin) said he had spoken to BT following the announcement and had been told workers taking up the offer of relocation to Belfast “could be offered ‘remote working.’”
“This means three days in Belfast and two at home,” added Mr Delargy
“Clearly BT’s definition of remote working and everybody else’s is different
How does this support those with childcare or caring responsibilities
How does it give any support to those concerned workers receiving this devastating news today
It would appear [BT has] zero commitment to Derry.”
Mr Delargy and Derry City and Strabane District councillor Sandra Duffy (Sinn Féin) had a further meeting with BT on Thursday
“Our priority is to emphasise that staff must come first and be properly supported,” he said
“We were extremely disappointed that BT are not allowing staff to move to online working
particularly as the fraud and customer service roles are already virtual roles and therefore insisting that staff need to be desk-based makes no sense
“We will continue to speak up for workers and support them during this difficult time,” said Mr Delargy
Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald described BT’s announcement as “deeply disappointing”
“As a significant employer in Derry for many years
this announcement will be of real concern to BT workers and the wider local community
“I met with the company this afternoon and made clear that these plans are entirely contrary to my drive for regional balance
“I offered the support of my Department and Invest NI to retain jobs in Derry but unfortunately the company is proceeding with its consultation
Invest NI will however be working with staff affected to offer retraining and to help them with other job opportunities,” said Dr Archibald
Former SDLP leader Colum Eastwood is set to appear in court charged with taking part in an unnotified parade

Under Northern Ireland’s legislation governing parades and processions

Mr Eastwood is one of several people due in court charged in relation to the event on February 14 last year
The SDLP declined to comment ahead of Tuesday’s court appearance

Echo Echo funding cut 'vindictive and unacceptable'
Cllr Harkin added: "The Arts Council knows a funding cut of this magnitude will force Echo Echo out of operation with a loss of jobs and its unique contribution
"Arts and Culture organisations in Derry and the North West have long faced a lack of investment from Stormont. Along with artists and organisations across the sector
Derry City and Strabane District Council has called for increased funding to allow arts and cultural organisations to flourish. The Arts Council decision flies in the face of this goal
Funding pulled from Derry dance theatre company Echo Echo
"People Before Profit will advocate for the entire Derry City and Strabane Council to take a clear stand against this decision. I have no doubt all those involved in the arts in Derry will stand with Echo Echo against this decision.
"Art enriches all our lives and strengthens communities, but it is also a source of employment for many people. We need to challenge the Arts Council and the DfC Minister on this decision. Arts organisations and creative workers aren't disposable. This decision must be reversed."
Derry manager Tiernan Lynch and Mark Connolly at the end of the win over Shelbourne
Derry City could go top of the Premier Division for the first time under Tiernan Lynch with victory over St Patrick’s Athletic at the Brandywell on Monday night.
Just two points separate the sides going into this evening’s fixture after yet another weekend of unpredictable results in the top flight, which saw the leadership of the division change multiple times before the final whistle sounded at grounds across the country.
At the Brandywell, that final whistle brought great satisfaction after a dominating 2-0 win over champions Shelbourne and now Lynch is hoping his team can build on that result and find the consistency which has escaped them all season.
“I just said to the boys that we can’t put performances in like that and then not follow them up,” he stated.
“Collectively, myself included, we need to find some consistency in what we do. We’re blessed with talent and we need to bring that back onto the pitch on Monday night, and try and put a run of games together.”
“These games are all games that you have to go and test yourself as an individual.
“We want to be a team who is up there and challenging and if we want to be that, we have got to relish these games, and big players have to stand up.”
There are now just two points between St Pat’s in first and Derry in fifth, and the hosts have the incentive of possibly going top of the League with victory over Stephen Kenny’s team.
“We need to find consistency in our own game,” Lynch continued.
“We have been getting wins and dropping off and now we have to see if we can put a run of wins together, and that’s the challenge we have to give ourselves, regardless of whether we’re playing Pat’s or Shels or Drogheda or whoever it may be.
“We have got to look after our own house and that’s what we need to concentrate on. I’ve no doubt that this group will be okay”
The manner of the victory over Shels was the perfect response to the shock defeat in Waterford and yet more evidence for the manager that he has the right characters at the club this season.
“I couldn’t be more proud of them,” he said.
“We let ourselves down last week and more importantly we let the club and the fans down last week, which was totally out of character for this group.
“We’ve probably come under a little bit of criticism, and rightly so, for the goals that we’ve conceded and that’s something we have to cut out of our game.
“Great credit to the players because they are working very hard at it. There were periods when we played some really good football, but we also have to take into consideration that this team is still very much finding itself.”
