Albany shortly before 8.30pm yesterday Vehicles and carpets were in the hangar and a huge smoke plume led to a request for nearby residents in Desborough Brampton Ash and Dingley to keep their windows and doors closed A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews used water jets to tackle the blaze while an aerial pump was used to tackle the large flames from heights “Firefighters continued to tackle it and try and reduce the volume of smoke until the early morning when the incident was scaled down to one pump and the aerial appliance at 1.30am “We anticipate the fire will continue to burn for many hours yet a crew from Guilsborough and a high-volume pump remain at the scene and continue to try to reduce the smoke plume “A Fire Investigation to determine a cause will take place once it is safe to do so.” Police were also called to the scene to assist in putting a cordon in place A fire in a hangar at Desborough Airfield could last for several more days The blaze at the site near Stoke Albany began shortly before 8.30pm on Thursday and involved vehicles and thousands of tonnes of carpet The intensity of the fire has seen the roof of the hangar collapse bringing down the carpet waste which was being stored in the building’s roof space People living in nearby have been advised to close their windows and doors since it broke out with large plumes of black smoke visible from the former Ministry of Defence site the warning has now been extended to villagers in Great Bowden Firefighters at the scene of the blaze on Thursday evening
