A WELL-known red phone box in Donaghadee could soon be protected
after fresh calls to preserve the town’s much-loved landmark
has confirmed it is reviewing the criteria for listing historic sites — a move that could see the Killaughey Road phone box officially recognised
The review follows a request from North Down MLA Peter Martin
who described the box as a ‘wonderful piece of our heritage’
The HED revealed it now has a “better understanding of the rarity of these kiosks” after further research and survey work
A senior architect from the department has promised to update Mr Martin once the review — which includes a visit to the Donaghadee site — is complete
Mr Martin said: “I know how valued this traditional red phone box is by the Donaghadee community and that they would love to see it restored and preserved.”
He also expressed ‘delight’ at the HED’s response
noting the kiosk is currently “not in a good condition” and calling for urgent maintenance so it “returns to what it should be.”
who has worked with the Donaghadee community for 30 years
said he was well aware of the phone box’s importance to the town
many people over the years used this box long before mobile and landline phones were common,” Mr Brooks said
“There are many personal memories connected to it – I’ve even heard there are urban myths surrounding this phone box
it’s a unique part of our national heritage and its place and existence at Hunts Park is an important reminder and part of Donaghadee’s history.”
Councillor James Cochrane also welcomed the move
saying: “Many people will have fond memories of using this phone box throughout the years
it is important we safeguard this so that it can be enjoyed by future generations to come.”
Donaghadee’s famous red phone box could soon be officially protected — ensuring this slice of local history continues to stand proud for years to come
Students from Bloomfield Primary School visited Pink's Green in Donaghadee where they took part in litter picking and rock pool exercises as part of Ards and North Down Borough Council's environmental awareness initiative
Project ELLA focuses on the four keys of Environment
It is primarily a schools based programme that gives students the opportunity to learn about the importance of environmental protection as well as the role that residents have in improving and enhancing the Borough through positive environmental action and behaviour
After successfully completing a beach clean where they collected bags of litter and debris from the area
Bloomfield Primary School's Year 5 students gained an insight into marine biodiversity through rook pooling
and learned about how threats such as climate change
litter and pollution can affect the environment
"Project ELLA is about connecting people to the landscape and our natural environment and encouraging positive actions and behaviours
It is a collaborative concept that is designed to improve and protect our natural environment by way of education and community engagement
Working with local children helps to instil that sense of community and accountability from a young age and it was wonderful to see the enthusiasm of Bloomfield Primary School's Year 5 students as they completed their tasks."

#BelfastMarathon2025 #KurtisRobinson #FirefighterTribute #DonaghadeeNews #NIChestHeartStroke #RunForKurtis #FireServiceHeroes #CharityRunNI #FullGearChallenge
Donaghadee, Northern Ireland – A firefighter from Belfast is taking on the 2025 Belfast Marathon in full firefighting gear to honour the memory of his late colleague, Kurtis Robinson, a Donaghadee firefighter who tragically passed away at the age of 31.
Kurtis suffered a heart attack in October 2023, stemming from a kidney-related illness, and passed away in February 2024 after being in a coma for several weeks. A devoted father and husband, Kurtis leaves behind his wife Natalie and young son Benny.
Anthony Byrne, who now serves at Cadogan Fire Station on the Lisburn Road and also works as a personal trainer at GymCo, will run the full 26.2 miles wearing his firefighting suit and breathing apparatus (BA) — adding approximately 27 kilograms to his body weight.
“A fire suit doesn’t let heat out, and the BA gear puts a lot of pressure on your shoulders and lower back,” said Anthony. “It’s going to be tough, but I want to do this for Kurtis.”
Anthony has only managed one full training run in the gear due to work constraints, but he’s been preparing using a 20kg weighted vest. He says juggling marathon prep with firefighting and personal training work has been “hectic,” but the cause drives him forward.
In a powerful and emotional tribute, Kurtis’ wife, Natalie, will join Anthony for the final stretch of the marathon as part of a relay team.
“As long as I make it to her, I know I’ll finish,” said Anthony. “That’s what I’m focused on — getting to Natalie, for Kurtis.”
This will be Anthony’s third marathon, though only his second official race.
Anthony has launched a JustGiving fundraiser titled “Anthony’s Run for Kurtis & Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke”, and has already raised nearly £3,000 for the charity.
“Kurtis mentored me during my early days at Knock Station in East Belfast. He was such a kind, genuine person. When I saw Natalie and Benny recently at football matches we played through the Fire Service, I knew I had to do something.”
“This run is my way of giving something back — in memory of Kurtis, and to support others facing heart and kidney conditions.”
Anyone wishing to support Anthony’s charity run in memory of Kurtis Robinson can donate via his JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/

A DONAGHADEE woman marked her 100th birthday milestone on Monday.
Annie McDowell, who is a resident at Copeland Fold in the seaside town, was joined by her family and fellow residents to celebrate her special day.
Born Annie McClure at 22 Donaghadee Road, Bangor, she is the eldest daughter of Louise and John McClure who came from North Down farming families. They then moved to Ballygrainey at Six Road Ends where her younger sister Mary was born in 1930, and she attended school in Cottown where she said she has ‘great memories’ of.
Having grown up very studious and a prolific reader, Annie went on to work for the Civil Service on Ormeau Avenue, Belfast, on the Ordnance Survey unit.
She met her husband, Robert McDowell, a Glasgow native and Merchant Navy Sea Captain, while on a trip to the Isle of Man shortly after the war.
“I met him on holiday in Douglas, Isle of Man. I went with a dear friend Theresa, and he’d just come back from a trip to India. I remember exactly what he said, ‘would you like to go for a dander?’,” said Annie.
When Robert and Annie married in 1952, they moved to Clarkston, Glasgow, where they had a daughter named Mary in 1954. They stayed in Scotland until 1961 when they emigrated to New Zealand and lived there for 18 years before retiring back to Scotland where they lived in Ayr, Dunoon and Argyllshire.
They then returned back to Bangor and settled in Donaghadee.
While living in New Zealand, Annie said she has fond memories of being part of a women’s division group where they organised family events in local villages.
Her other hobbies included flower arranging, gardening, knitting and being a keen Scottish country dancer, which she started in Scotland and continued when she moved back to Bangor.
Annie said she aspires to be like her great-aunt, who lived until she was 103 years-old.
Mary Bilyeu, Annie’s daughter, said of her mother turning 100 years-old: “It’s amazing, I’m not surprised that she’s made it, I think she’ll probably go on to be 200 – no matter what happens she keeps going.”
Commenting on her milestone birthday, Annie said: “I don’t think it has sunk in yet, but it’s lovely having my daughter here to share it.”
When asked what words of wisdom she would impart to the younger generation, Annie shared one key piece of advice: “You must never lose your sense of humour.”
Donaghadee hairdresser retires after 40 years
A HAIRDRESSER has hung up her scissors for the final time after 40 years of serving the Donaghadee community.
Adrienne Johnston (67), who ran Adrienne’s Hair Salon on High Street, began her hairdressing career almost 50 years ago in 1976.
After obtaining her City & Guilds qualification in hairdressing, Adrienne learned the tricks of the trade after completing her training in May’s Salon in Donaghadee, where she worked for over five years before heading back to college to do her advanced exams.
Having found her passion and proved her potential, she went on to work for well-known Belfast unisex salon owner John Turley, who also ran a men’s barbers on York Street with a women’s hairdressers upstairs, which Adrienne looked after with two other stylists.
In the five years she worked for John Turley, Adrienne was also coming home to do friends’ and family’s hair in the evenings.
In 1985, a lady called Mrs Cooper who owned the retail space on High Street, Donaghadee, offered Adrienne the opportunity to rent it to start-up her very own salon.
“I had to think about it, it was a big step to start my own business,” said Adrienne. “I thought, if it works, it works. If it doesn’t, I can always get another job – and it worked.”
Adrienne’s Hair Salon became a staple in Donaghadee’s town centre over the years, attracting clients from Belfast, Helen’s Bay and across the peninsula.
Family members soon joined her in the salon including her sister, Joan, who played a pivotal part in shaping her hairdressing career before sadly passing away last August.
“My sister Joan worked with me. She was there from the start of my career as my model for training and exams at Bangor Technical College, until she stopped to look after her grandchild.
“[Joan’s] daughter Elaine also worked for me. She came in after school and started training with us, then went onto the college too.”
After losing both her sister and brother last year, Adrienne said ‘it was time’ to take a much-needed break after working full-time for so long.
With the salon completely cleared out now and bought over by neighbouring business J Wright & Sons, a local butchers in the town, Adrienne says while it is the end of an era, she is looking forward to some well-deserved time off as she enters her first few weeks of retirement.
“I have no plans, but who knows what’s round the corner.
“I’m just doing day by day and hopefully have a wee holiday later. I’m still sort of acclimatising like I’m still on holiday for a week and I need to go back.”
When asked about career highlights, Adrienne said: “I enjoyed every minute of it. It wasn’t like a job, it didn’t feel like one. I just enjoyed doing what I did – it was always my passion.”
She describes her clients as feeling more ‘like a family’ as she got to know the community over the last 40 years.
“I would like to thank all the girls who worked for me over the years keeping my salon going and also my clients who were loyal, kind, thoughtful and generous to us.
“Also a big thank you to Jennifer for staying with me for 35 years through our ups and downs in the business. I will miss it all,” said Adrienne.

She then kicked one of the officers and punched another in the groin
