Captioning his X post McCann simply stated: "Afternoon Kip with this beautiful thing." Might use this picture for the table named after you at our wedding in December." Doncaster!” The crowd thunders in applause the man whose voice would be instantly recognised by almost anyone in the country the man who inspires devotion and loathing in equal measure win the mayoralty and begin the process of turning this city around,” Nigel Farage declares A few minutes earlier I’d arrived at Doncaster Racecourse being ushered in by some slightly scary doormen and the Reform media team into the building's cavernous main conference hall.  Loud Business by Eminem (must be a circus in town This is the big launch of Reform’s Doncaster campaign In a city where 69% voted Brexit and an English Democrat was formerly mayor you can see why they think they’ve got a good chance these opening remarks would prove to be the high point of the mayoral campaign After they are bundled out of the hall by some heavies variously referencing Palestine and the fact that child sex abuse is mostly perpetrated by white men They’re quickly drowned out by chants from the crowd: “Out Farage uses the hecklers to make an unscheduled point “Teaching unions in this country are poisoning the minds of young people,” he roars “We will go to war with these left wing teaching unions We will not be stopped by a ranting student mob.” Cue rapturous applause Farage lists the issues Reform will be campaigning on and what he calls “net stupid zero lunacy”) and the local (Doncaster Council spending money on “LGBT week” and “a £20 million cycle path that no one ever uses”) But the main event is the unveiling of Reform’s candidate for mayor the mayor is elected separately from the council and grabbing the position would make a huge statement Rumours have been flying around about which celebrity or defecting Tory might have got the nod But the party has kept a tight lid on who it might be with even the most seasoned Doncaster politics watchers being left in the dark Everyone leans forward an inch to catch the big name “The city needs a fresh start and a new boss,” continues Farage So it’s going to be putting forward a “young businessman who is a great emblem for the multi-generational party” Reform has become: Alexander Jones the journalists around me start checking their phones Jones takes to the stage and catastrophically fails to live up to Farage’s billing he is one of the worst public speakers I have ever heard his plodding through the script reminiscent of a six year old in the school nativity “Can we have a big round of applause for this brave young man standing up,” he says “Your first political speech is one of the most nerve wracking things you can do.”  The 30-year-old former estate agent and foreign exchange trader is a far cry from the stereotype of a Reform voter His Facebook page is much more focused on his gym sessions than politics But maybe this isn’t so strange after all — Farage has made much of Reform’s popularity among “Gen Z” and the toned self-made businessman image might appeal to some in that group The fact he was already running to be a local councillor has prompted some to claim that he was a last minute pick after a bigger name fell through with only hours to spare Already have an account? News stories, speeches, letters and notices Data, Freedom of Information releases and corporate reports Millions of pounds of investment has been announced today by the South Yorkshire Mayor (Wednesday 9 April) to support the reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA), with plans forecasted to support 5,000 jobs, boost the economy by £5bn and provide wider benefits of £2bn by 2050.    The Airport has sat idle for years despite the potential to drive growth across the north. Today’s decision by the South Yorkshire mayor, backed by this government, would see the creation of a sustainable aviation hub in South Yorkshire to turbocharge economic growth in the region. Today’s boost for South Yorkshire comes as the Deputy Prime Minister agrees new shared priorities with mayors across the country focused on the opportunities and challenges to unlocking regional growth – a major step forward in the government’s pledge for each regional mayor to have their own Local Growth Plan.  If we are to really grow our economy and put money into the pockets of working people, regional growth needs to be hardwired into the decisions that we make.   That’s why we have wasted no time in kick starting Local Growth Plans, owned by local leaders, and why, through our bold devolution plans, we can back our mayors and get opportunities for jobs and growth off the ground – just as they will with this thriving regional airport. Previous governments stood by as Doncaster Sheffield Airport was closed by its owner despite the overwhelming support for it to stay open. It now sits idle despite the potential to drive jobs and growth across the north. I am delighted to work with City of Doncaster Council and the Mayor of South Yorkshire Oliver Coppard to support their efforts to recreate South Yorkshire Airport City as a thriving regional airport. This Government will stop at nothing to fuel economic growth and deliver prosperity for people up and down the country, as part of our Plan for Change.   I’m thrilled to see devolved funding for South Yorkshire being used to revitalise the airport project, and boost the region as a whole, and I look forward to the first flights taking to the sky. This significant funding package, alongside the cross-departmental government working group we have now set up, is a vital signal of our shared commitment to our airport, to growth, to creating good jobs in our communities, and to the future of Doncaster and South Yorkshire.   Since day one, we have been fighting for our airport, so we can create good jobs in the industries of the future and play our part in developing the sustainable aviation technologies of tomorrow. To now have the support of a government who don’t just understand that opportunity but truly want to help us realise it, couldn’t be more important. The new growth priorities agreed today will support mayors by tapping into government levers that can help their ambitions for their communities. Local plans will now help turbocharge regional economies, with shared priorities including:  Improving transport connectivity to create a green, integrated transport network in the North East  Increasing the skills base and reducing economic inactivity in West Yorkshire  Boosting the availability and affordability of homes in Liverpool  These plans will ensure a more strategic approach to regional growth over the long-term and align government policy better to grow and create a more future-facing economy with benefits that are felt across the country.   The shared priorities confirmed by Deputy Prime Minister today are the first stage of developing these major plans, with more work underway to shape them further. Mayors will now begin to finalise their own Local Growth Plans for publication later this year.  The Mayor’s investment will be supported through South Yorkshire’s devolved funding, including SYMCAs Investment Fund and the new, flexible, long-term Integrated Settlement which will be implemented in SYMCA from 2026/27.   The new working group will meet monthly and will ensure that the path to local prosperity is being driven forward by those who know the region best.  South Yorkshire Mayoral Combine Authority  Don’t include personal or financial information like your National Insurance number or credit card details. They knew a win against Notts County would secure them the honour and they did just that and comfortably as well. Speaking to the club's website Grant McCann said: “We just needed to manage the week with the players,” manager McCann said. “We know they had a couple of days on the booze, which they deserve. We all won promotion last weekend. “But when the boys came in on Tuesday, we got our heads straight back in the game and focused on Notts County and how we could hurt them, what we needed to do to win this game without relying on anyone else.
