Nigel Farage's party won 27 seats in Worcestershire today
making them the largest party on the council
they remained two seats short of an outright majority
The Green Party and Liberal Democrats also gained seats in the area as locals appear to be looking beyond Conservative and Labour for leadership
Reacting to the news, Simon Geraghty, who has been ousted as Conservative leader of the council, told the BBC that it had been "difficult day" for himself and local party members after he lost his seat, Riverside in Worcester, to the Greens

The new Lottery Heritage Fund multi-million pound initiative for UK places of worship has given a sizable grant to a Catholic church in Droitwich Spa with world-renowned mosaics
The parishioners of the Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart and St Catherine of Alexandria gratefully received £190,000 from the National Lottery which will go towards a £260,000 project cleaning and conserving mosaics that encourage thousands of visitors from across the UK
“We are extremely grateful to the National Lottery players for helping us to preserve this unique and magnificent church so that visitors can continue to enjoy its outstanding beauty.”
The church is covered with some of the finest venetian glass mosaic artwork in Europe and was built between 1919 and 1921 in the style of the basilica churches of Ravenna
Along with the ability to clean and conserve the mosaics
the grant will also allow for the digitising of the paintings by Gabriel Pippet that were converted into the mosaics by Maurice Josey and his assistant
The Church is open on weekdays between 10am until 6pm and on weekends between 12 midday and 5:30pm
unless there are any religious services in progress
More information about the church can be found on the Sacred Heart, Droitwich site and also on Visit Worcestershire

Contractor Griffiths and marine engineering specialist The Rothen Group have overcome engineering challenges to replace two footbridges spanning the Droitwich Canals in Worcestershire
which reopened in 2011 after restoration efforts
form an important leisure route for walkers and boaters in the mid-Worcestershire area
located at King George Playing Fields and Little Hill Court
were no longer fit for purpose due to deterioration
The decision was made in January 2024 to remove and install new structures
The project involved complex lifting operations due to the bridges’ location over water and proximity to residential developments
which limited land access for conventional construction equipment
Griffiths site manager Thomas Roberts said: “From a civil engineering perspective
dismantling and replacing bridges is undoubtedly difficult and requires a lot of planning
the difficulty factor multiplies further – both needed to be stripped down
replaced and lifted into place on the canal itself
so we knew specialist equipment and knowledge would be needed to carry this out.”
Griffiths partnered with marine engineering specialists The Rothen Group
The company provided a 8m (26ft) crane pontoon
designed to facilitate construction activities directly on the water
This piece of equipment was crucial as it could lift 2t at 12m and the platform could also be adapted to narrow and wide beam waterways
suiting the awkward-to-access circumstances of each bridge’s location
creating a stable working platform while both projects were carried out
This allowed the bridges to be stripped down and replaced without the need for land access
New ramps were also put in place as part of these works
followed by the installation of handrails – also from the pontoon
The Rothen Group founder Ian Rothen said: “Dismantling the old bridges proved difficult from a health-and-safety perspective
as it quickly became apparent that the old wood had rotted
using scaffold towers mounted on the pontoon and extra harnesses off the crane to carry out the first stage of the works.”
the materials were cleared using a 21m (70ft) historic carrying boat
which also played a key role in transporting the new structures to their installation sites
with each new bridge installed in just two days
“While The Rothen Group is known for its traditional bridge lifts
the sheer size of these bridges made them some of the biggest we had ever erected,” said Rothen
we drew on our years of experience to ensure the complex project was completed without a hitch.”
Roberts praised The Rothen Group saying: “The assistance of The Rothen Group was invaluable to the successful completion of this project
Ian and the team were extremely helpful throughout despite the complexities this particular project presented
or – in the case of the rotting wood on the original bridges – encountered over this project’s lifetime
The Rothen Group was able to adapt and provide a suite of comprehensive solutions
I would gladly engage with them again on projects of this type.”
