Due to low lighting, crews left the scene and returned at 6am on Monday with one appliance still in attendance. Crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) were called to an open grass fire affecting land on Shore Road in Innellan, south of Dunoon. Firefighters attended around 2.30pm on Sunday and were working to extinguish the fire throughout the evening. However, due to low lighting, crews left the scene and returned at 6am on Monday with one appliance still in attendance. The SFRS urged members of the public not to alert their control room about the fire as they had already received a large number of calls. An SFRS statement read: “We are aware of an open grass fire affecting an area of land on Shore Road in Innellan (south of Dunoon). “We were called to the area at 2.30pm today and crews have been working to extinguish the fire. “Due to low lighting, crews have left the scene and will reattend at 6am tomorrow morning. “Members of the public no longer need to alert our Operations Control room about this fire as we are receiving a large number of calls.” STV News is now on WhatsAppGet all the latest news from around the country Follow STV News Follow STV News on WhatsAppScan the QR code on your mobile device for all the latest news from around the country '+scriptOptions._localizedStrings.webview_notification_text+' "+scriptOptions._localizedStrings.redirect_overlay_title+" "+scriptOptions._localizedStrings.redirect_overlay_text+" Have you heard about Here To Hear You? Enquiries@argyll-bute.gov.uk The Nevis Range and Dunoon Project have united to put together plans which include new MTB trails and a gondola uplift Dunoon bike park and gondola Credit: mbr a gondola uplift to take riders to the top a small town to the west of Glasgow that hopes to transform itself into the next Fort William Nevis Range and the Dunoon Project have clubbed together to put forward plans for a new adventure resort to be built in Dunoon The resort aims to help Dunoon become a “global leader in adventure tourism” with enduro downhill and cross-country mountain bike trails being designed and built by those involved in the Nevis Range’s projects There will also be a bike shop which will include bike hire and a base station with a hotel and dining options because there will also be a gondola installed – the first of its kind in the area – and a café providing panoramic views situated at the top So now you don’t have to travel to Fort William or to mainland Europe to get access to one of the coolest uplifts around With Dunoon only 1.5 hours away from Glasgow it’s well situated to attract more explorers to the region The new Base Station will take inspiration from that of Fort William’s and offer a hotel as well as dining options Dunoon is located about 1.5 hour’s drive west from Glasgow and has somewhat suffered with a lack of tourism in recent years The Dunoon Project was founded to reinstate it as a holiday destination the area with that name (where Fort Bill is) the teams have come up with plans that include an adventure resort The resort is not just about mountain biking And the centrepiece of that will be the gondola We assume it will also act as the uplift method for bikes as well as connecting walkers and coffee drinkers to the tops of the hills overlooking the town The gondola will also remove the need for vehicular access to the top of the mountain thus creating a slightly more environmentally-friendly way to get to the top Dunoon already has some trails to attract riders but this will be the region’s first purpose-built resort The other famous gondola in Scotland is of course that of Fort William The benefit of the gondola is that it means the mountain can remain ‘open’ all-year-round At the top of the hill the resort will feature downhill enduro and cross-country trails with the aim at positioning Dunoon as a “leading international MTB destination.” Will this mean we will be seeing Scotland back on the DH World Cup circuit The trails have been designed by some of the trail builders from the Nevis Range with zip lines and climbing areas alongside a café offering panoramic views of the area You and your friends could also be doing group high fives in 2030 At the base of it all will be an ‘adventure hotel’ outdoor enthusiasts and hikers with access to trails and the gondola There will also be a bike shop with bike hire and a workshop And if you want to dabble in some other outdoor pursuits there will be other retail and outdoor-oriented shops there too as well as restaurants to refuel after a long day on the hill said: “Dunoon has always had the potential to be a world-class adventure tourism destination we’re unlocking that potential and creating something truly extraordinary We’ve seen first-hand how infrastructure like this can transform an area and Dunoon will now be at the forefront of adventure tourism in Scotland.” While it’s unclear whether the plans have been submitted or not the local council has already given its approval to the scheme and the project is going to be funded through both public and private investment Some of the bike trails have already begun development courtesy of project partner Action Argyll and if everything goes to plan the whole park should be up and running by 2030 dunoonproject.org An urgent crowdfunding bid has been launched to raise £60,000 and stave off the potential closure of an arts centre that opened just eight years ago The spectre of dereliction has been raised to focus minds amidst concerns over the future of the venue who said: “We’ve already begun work on a long-term strategy to rejuvenate every part of the building to make it better serve the local and wider community “We want the Hall to become the beating heart of Dunoon and the wider Cowal Peninsula We believe there can be a bright future ahead if we can navigate through the immediate shortfall in revenue" managing director of CX Services which is supporting the bid like many arts organisations which rely on funding it is finding it difficult to operate in the current financial climate which has left the Hall facing a significant shortfall “It urgently needs to raise £60,000 over the next few months or it faces the prospect of closure by the middle of the year.”   Designed by architect Robert Alexander Bryden the grey schist building dates from 1873 and it was home to the first theatre in Argyll meeting and performing before later housing council services The B-listed Hall was refurbished in 2017 by Page/Park Architects and the John McAslan Family Trust for £1.65m and is now a creative All comments are pre-moderated and must obey our house The possible closure has come at a time when arts venues across the country are facing a funding crisis. Now, some A-list actors have backed calls to support the prestigious Victorian cultural centre. In a video message, Emma said: “It’s the most extraordinary building, so beautiful, but inside it’s so alive and vibrant. “They’ve the most wonderful arts shows and most wonderful resources for the elderly, the young. It’s a community hub like no other and we are so lucky to have such a thing in Dunoon. Help us save this precious treasure.” Joining his wife, Greg said: “Please help as much as you can, spread the word, help raise funds. Keep this wonderful building open. It’s a crown for Dunoon. It would be an absolute travesty were it to disappear.” The venue needs £60,000 if it is to pay wages and keep the lights on before funding runs out at the end of March. There are huge concerns about the wider impact to the community if the venue closes its doors for good. Dunoon Burgh Hall trustee and local resident Greg Girard told STV News: “We’re trying to raise £60,000 to keep us going through until the end of March. “If we don’t reach that target, then the hall will close. The only asset in the hall is the hall itself. So, the potential to lose the hall is quite a big threat to the community in general.” The burgh hall is a cultural cornerstone in this community. It’s been a safe haven for artists from across Scotland, offering a place for them to showcase their works. Artist Pearl Kinnear told STV News: “This gallery space being given to us – free to use and free for the public to access – is incredibly important. “There’s nothing better than going to somewhere out of the central belt and finding an amazing building, walking in and seeing something you do not expect to see there. That’s one of the most valuable things Dunoon Burgh Hall provides in terms of the visual art.“ The venue also works with vulnerable young people, local kids and young carers. They host workshops and art classes that encourage their creativity and provide wider support. Youth project coordinator Kerry Nixon, said: “We’re working with the most vulnerable people, especially with my project. It’s actually a lifeline this building – keeping people socialising, giving them access to the arts, even just a wee space to meet up with each other. “It’s just so important we don’ t let our arts venues go and it’s the best place for miles around.” There’s a rich history and a lot of special memories for locals connected to the hall. Volunteer Ewan Hamilton said it has a special place in his heart: “I volunteer and help out at the hall. I was on a committee when there was potential for it to be knocked down some years ago. It means a lot to me.” Trustee Patricia Girard has been connected to the halls for years and wants to preserve the unique cultural history of the venue for generations to come. Patricia told STV News: “ It was built by the people of Dunoon, which were my ancestors, and maybe everybody in Dunoon’s ancestors put together, to help fund and build this hall. “It had the oldest theatre in Scotland and had many different functions. I learned to tap dance in it as well. We put on a Highland show here and it was one of the best nights.” An online fundraiser is now active to help save the local landmark. Kyle Bryce left the woman with life-changing injuries including severe brain damage. The 38-year-old was held after going on to threaten to strangle a female garage worker the same day. The first offender was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow on Friday.  He had earlier admitted attempting to murder his former partner at a property in Dunoon, Argyll and Bute on May 2 2024. Lord Arthurson cut the jail term from 18 years due to the guilty plea. The judge described the violence as “frenzied and wholly murderous”. Bryce had gone to the house in Dunoon that day, where he started arguing with the victim. The woman then said she wanted them to split. Prosecutor Mark Mohammed KC stated: “She asked Bryce to take his belongings and leave the house.” The woman went on to call her mother and told her that the relationship was over. But, Mr Mohammed said raging Bryce, of Clydebank, did not leave. There was then, instead, another row before he shoved the victim against a wall. The prosecutor said: “He took a hammer and struck her on the head, causing her to fall in the kitchen.” Bryce delivered more blows, resulting in the woman being knocked out and suffering a string of horrific injuries. He went to abandon the victim, left the house and dumped the hammer in a bin. A sobbing Bryce called his brother-in-law, admitting “something bad happened”. He was also “hysterical” when he phoned his mother. Bryce went on to dial 999 and stated: “Murder…the patient is away to heaven”. He said his ex was now “gone” and had suffered a “serious head injury”. Emergency services arrived, and police initially believed they may have to force entry after finding all the doors locked. The victim’s mum was contacted, and she luckily had a spare key. The woman was discovered still lying on the floor, badly hurt and unresponsive. She was rushed to hospital in Glasgow.  The victim had brain damage, a fractured skull as well as other injuries to her face. She was later transferred to a rehab unit at Inverclyde Royal Hospital in Greenock. Mr Mohammed said she remains badly affected by her ordeal. He told the hearing: “She will not fully recover from her brain injury. “She is at increased risk of developing early onset dementia. “There has been permanent hearing loss in the right ear.” As of August 2024, the woman was awaiting a bed at her local hospital. She will end up needing supported accommodation as she can no longer live independently. The court heard Bryce was held that night after he was involved in the assault of a petrol station worker in Strachur, Argyll and Bute, following the attack. This woman had tried to stop him from driving off before he pushed her and threatened: “I will choke you to death”. Bryce also pleaded guilty on Friday to the assault at the filling station. The judge had previously called Bryce’s attack on his ex as “truly horrific”. Sentencing, he said: “There is no doubt that you intended to kill your victim.   “Indeed, your remarks in the aftermath disclose that you thought that you had killed her.   “You perpetrated a sustained, frenzied and wholly murderous attack upon your victim with a hammer. “Your victim will never again live a normal life, or perhaps anything even remotely resembling that.” He added that the impact statement from the woman’s mother was “powerful, eloquent, and truly heart-rending.” 31 March, 2025 | Local A SINGLE-vessel service will operate on the Dunoon to Gourock ferry route while urgent repairs are carried out to MV Argyll Flyer has been found during the vessel’s annual maintenance A detailed repair plan is currently being prepared but early indications are that the vessel may be required to be off service for several months The vessel is likely to require modifications that will take time to design and implement MV Argyll Flyer was due to return on Tuesday 1 April but the route will be operated solely by MV Ali Cat Customers and local communities will be kept informed about a return to service date A CalMac spokeswoman said: “The health and safety of our crew and customers is our number one priority and it is important that the exhaust is fixed so that they are not exposed to unacceptable levels of exhaust fumes We understand that only having one vessel on the Gourock to Dunoon route will be inconvenient to our customers and we are sorry about this there is not another vessel we can move to this route and we will not have any spare during this period Repairs will be carried out as quickly as possible and we will update customers once these have been successfully completed.” the daily 1015 sailing from Gourock and the 1045 from Dunoon will be cancelled each day as will the 2240 from Gourock and the 2310 from Dunoon on a Tuesday To allow for essential maintenance to be carried out while MV Ali Cat is operating a single-vessel timetable the 1115 from Gourock and the 1145 from Dunoon will be cancelled on a Monday and Friday Replacement bus services will operate for these cancelled sailings CRUISE Ship Arriving A Day Earlier Than Planned Privacy Policy Subscribe for full access to West Coast Today or Register for 1 free article per week Subscribing gives you access all areas of the website unlimited articles and access to the digital editions of The Oban Times Argyllshire Advertiser and Lochaber Times including 18 years of archive editions You will also be helping to support local independent journalism and local jobs Subscribe Register   Login I would like to be sent emails from West Coast Today I understand that my personal information will not be shared with any third parties and will only be used  to provide me with useful targeted articles as indicated I'm also aware that I can un-subscribe at any point either from each email notification or on My Account screen You are not permitted to copy, republish, reproduce any text, photos, graphics, sounds from this website without written permission from the editor@westcoasttoday.co.uk IPSO is an independent body which deals with complaints from the public about the editorial content of newspapers and magazines Kyle Bryce attacked the woman at her home in Dunoon after she decided to end their relationship.
