Easington Colliery has teamed up with pop star Sam Fender for his latest release — with the aim of topping two different charts in March
Not only will Easington Colliery Band be looking to retain top spot at the North of England Regional Championships in Durham next month
but they will also be hoping to be part of a Number 1 hit with their musical association with musician Sam Fender
which has already made an impact with listeners and critics alike
"reflective and perceptive indie rock from North Shields' shining star"
The album includes the track 'Remember My Name' on which he is joined by the band and which explores the sense of loss and sadness both he and his grandfather experienced when his grandmother was succumbing the cruelty of dementia
The Daily Express said that the music and lyrics showed "warmth
The album which was only released on Thursday has already broken into the top 30 of the official singles charts
Easington Band spokesperson Peter Lawson told 4BR: "We initially received a phone call from Sandy Smith in March 2023 asking if the band would be interested in backing Sam for 'Remember my Name'
We were of course thrilled to be asked although we had to keep it secret until the launch
Sandy was asked to arrange the backing track for a brass band local to the area as Sam is local to North Shields
It's a very emotional song that's very dear to Sam
many of whom know family members who have also suffered from this cruel illness."
The band recently took part in the video for the release
which has brought a great dal of critical acclaim
with Peter hoping that it will see the band able to celebrate a unique double come the North of England Area Championships
"Sam has already been in touch to find out how we are getting on and said he will be checking the results
We can't think of anything better than to be able to celebrate a fantastic victory and a number 1 hit in the same month — and especially as Sam's music is raising awareness and support to families

Five or six of the players last Sunday have come through the set up here and it is great to see them step up and take their chances
But we’ve been playing well and are in good form so hopefully we have enough to get through.”

Easington Lane Reserves 1 Darlington Under 23s 2
Our under 23s came from behind to win 2-1 at Easington Lane thanks to two goals by Jack Mortimer
and also bring up their century of league goals for the season
Quakers weren’t at their best in the first half
but a second half fightback saw them take the points to stay ten points clear of second place
They need another fourteen points from seven games to guarantee a top two place
The squad was very much depleted due to injury and illness which saw them barely getting 13 to travel
With the numbers available the starting eleven looked very different from recent games and people playing in positions they aren’t normally accustomed too
The game itself in the first half had very little rhythm for both teams and with the weather it turned into a bit of a stalemate for both teams until the 33rd minute when a long ball over the top was not dealt with by Darlington and allowed Easington to be on a 1v1 with the goalkeeper to make it 1-0 to the home side
Half time arrived and with a change of personnel
a tweak in formation and some choice words by manager Grant Cuthbertson
the second half started very much better by the Darlington team
It remained 1-0 for much of the game which was down to some very resilient defending by the home team until a piece of magic by Jack Mortimer with a sublime free kick from 25 yards out to place the ball into the top left corner to make it 1-1
Darlington kept up the pressure and they had a ball go through in to the box and Mortimer had a shot which was handled and the referee gave a penalty
Up stepped Mortimer again to make it 2-1 and that is how the game finished
He has now scored 36 goals this season in all competitions
Manager Grant Cuthbertson said; “It wasn’t a good day at the office but a win is a win and it felt very much like a smash and grab
the three points keep us on course for a top two finish
this made a total so far of 100 goals in the league
which in itself is a fantastic achievement and we still have seven games remaining.”
The Lions increased their unbeaten run to five at the hands of Whickham in a five-star
Noah Millington continued his impressive goal scoring form to open the scoring before Joseph Thompson
Layton Campbell and Owen Imeson put the game to bed with neat finishes
Easington travelled to Tow Law on Saturday
The Colliers went two goals up thanks to a brace from Liam Wright
however a resilient Tow Law levelled the score
however Jamie O’Brien of Tow Law had other ideas
partaking in an extremely tight play-off run in
five points behind Boro Rangers in 5th with a game in hand
their good form has pushed them up the table in recent weeks
which is a testament to the football they play
Proving tomorrow will be a stern test for the Lions
The Colliers and the Lions met only in January at Welfare Park
Despite Benfield taking a two-goal lead into the break
Easington stuck away four goals in the second half
Liam Wright is my pick for player to watch this Saturday
Benfield will have to be switched on throughout to keep him at bay
"I think we've been celebrating since we got asked to do it
Easington Colliery Brass Band have revealed that they kept their contribution to Sam Fender‘s new album ‘People Watching’ a secret for over two years
comprised of musicians from Stockton-on-Tees and Seaham
appeared on the track ‘Remember My Name’
which was inspired by the relationship between Fender’s grandparents
In an interview with BBC News
band secretary Peter Lawson said that they first received the call in March 2023
and began recording with Fender a month later
Lawson said the ‘Hypersonic Missiles’ singer was a “down-to-earth lad” and was so emotional after hearing rehearsals that he asked if he could sing the song live with the band
“He was given one of the band’s concert uniforms and he wore the uniform all day,” Lawson
who has been a member of the band for 55 years after joining when he was 11 years old
“It’s a great thing to be part of
I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”
“The band was just thrilled to be part of the whole thing,” he continued
“I think we’ve been celebrating since we got asked to do it
We’re on cloud nine all the time.”
Lawson also explained to the BBC that recruiting new members can be a challenge
saying: “We’re trying to bring the youth through all the time.”
In a four-star review of ‘People Watching’
‘People Watching’ does exactly what the title may suggest: takes stock of the characters
friends and loved ones who have made Fender the person he is today
He approaches each track with sensitivity as he looks back on his life so far – perhaps even with an inkling of guilt – and contemplates who he may be next.”

Adderstone Living’s 56-house development on a 10-acre plot of land has been approved by Durham County Council
Located to the north and east of Sunderland Road
Believe Housing will manage the homes once completed
and anticipate more than half of them being available for social rent and the rest via Rent to Buy and shared ownership models
A recent report by Durham County Council showed that the housing register in the county has increased by about 30%
rising from 7,686 active applicants in 2020 to 10,999 in 2024
Reasons for the grow in demand include higher rents in the private sector and underinvestment in social housing
This Easington village project will have access from Sunderland Road and a pedestrian link near the site’s entrance as well as to the south east
which will connect with a neighbouring residential development and improve connectivity in the area
assistant director of development at Believe Housing
said: “One of our recent developments in Easington Village was incredibly popular
and there are currently more than 400 people on our waiting list for affordable homeownership opportunities in the area
“Now that planning permission has been granted
we look forward to working with Adderstone Living to deliver high-quality
energy-efficient homes that meet people’s needs and aspirations and to see our investment in new homes have a positive impact on the wider community.”
senior planning manager of Adderstone Living
said: “The delivery of social housing has never been more important than at present with commercial pressures on the sector to deliver high quality schemes in places where people want to live and build communities
“This development and other schemes coming on stream across the North East
