Glasgow City bolstered their SWPL title hopes, and ended reigning champions Celtic's aspirations of back-to-back wins in the process, with a comfortable victory at Petershill Park.
Nicole Kozlova's double and Brenna Lovera's strike put City three up by the break. Celtic replied through Lucy Ashworth-Clifford.
Kozlova netted her first from a tight angle and Lovera laid on Kozlova's second. Lovera then pounced on a goalkeeping error to add the third.
The visitors improved after half-time and Ashworth-Clifford converted Kit Loferski's cross for Celtic's consolation goal.
League leaders Hibs' win over Hearts moved them back to the summit, three points ahead of City and 11 in front of Elena Sadiku's Celtic, who are now officially out of the title race with three games left.

The Caledonia Gladiators had home court advantage to kick off the SBL Play-offs against Manchester Basketball. A close game in front of a loud Playsport, would see the Gladiators take the win and advance to the Semi-Final. Both teams battled hard in the win or go home game but a strong second quarter by the Gladiators pushed them to victory. The Gladiators will head out on the road to face top seeded Oaklands Wolves next weekend in the SLB Play-offs Semi-Final.
The Gladiators began to increase their lead in the second quarter of action at Playsport, taking a 9-point lead into the half-time break. The second quarter started much like the first, with the two teams trading baskets. It wasn’t until the final few minutes of the first half of the game that the Gladiators would begin to increase their lead. With multiple Gladiators contributing, the teams would take a 9-point into the half.
The score at the half was 46 – 37 to the Caledonia Gladiators.

BRORA Rangers will remain in the Highland League next season as Lowland League champions East Kilbride held off the Cattachs to progress to the final of the League Two play-off
After losing the first leg 4-1 at East Kilbride last week
Brora Rangers were 3-1 up in the second leg to move themselves within one goal of forcing the semi final into extra time
But two second half goals from East Kilbride killed off the tie and they will now progress to the final to face Bonnyrigg Rose for a place in League Two next season
Brora Rangers took the lead in the second leg clash in the 13th minute when Tony Dingwall scored after he connected with a Max Ewan cross and fired a low drive past the goalkeeper
But East Kilbride restored their three-goal aggregate advantage in the tie when John Robertson scored to make it 1-1 and 4-2 overall on aggregate
But Brora pulled themselves back to within two goals almost immediately when Alex Cooper’s corner kick went directly into the net to put Brora 2-1 up and only 5-3 behind on aggregate
The comeback looked on when Shane Sutherland scored in the 57th minute to put them 3-1 up in the match and only 5-4 behind on aggregate
Joao Balde scored before a Scott Ferguson penalty killed off the tie 10 minutes before the end to give East Kilbride a 7-4 win on aggregate
it has still been Brora Rangers’ most successful season in their history
Brora Rangers boss Steven Mackay was proud of his players despite their pyramid play-off defeat to East Kilbride
The Breedon Highland League champions drew 3-3 with their Lowland League counterparts at Dudgeon Park, a result which means East Kilbride progress 7-4 on aggregate to face Bonnyrigg Rose in the play-off final.
At one point in the second half the Cattachs – who won the treble of the Highland League
the R Davidson (Banchory) Highland League Cup and the North of Scotland Cup this term – led 3-1 and it looked like they could overturn the 4-1 deficit from the first leg
But their hopes of promotion were snuffed out and manager Mackay said: “I’m really proud of how the boys responded after last week.
“We underperformed last week and our pride was dented
We gave ourselves a huge mountain to climb
“Their second goal hands all the momentum back to East Kilbride at such an important point in the game
I felt we were good value to win this game
the reality is the damage was done last week
“We’ve had a phenomenal season and I’m really proud of them because the effort they’ve put in this season has been incredible
“At our first pre-season training session we had seven players and Shane Sutherland who hadn’t kicked a ball in two years
“To go from that to what we’ve achieved this season is huge credit to the players
this is my third go at it and it doesn’t get any easier
but we’ll learn from it and it will stand us in good stead.”
In the early stages East Kilbride’s Cameron Elliott had a header and a follow-up shot from Regan Mimnaugh’s corner blocked at close quarters by the Brora defence
But it was the Cattachs who broke the deadlock in the 13th minute to reduce their aggregate arrears
Tony Dingwall’s driving run took him towards the edge of the box before he passed to Shane Sutherland
the striker did well to control and find the perfect return pass which set up Dingwall to score from eight yards
Eleven minutes later East Kilbride equalised when John Robertson was given too much time at the edge of the penalty area to let fly and his left-foot shot flashed into the roof of the net
within a minute Brora retook the lead to make it 5-3 on aggregate
Alex Cooper’s inswinging corner from the right was whipped into the front post and the ball was eventually clawed out of the goalmouth by goalkeeper Craig Truesdale
But referee Daniel Graves and assistant Michael Macdermid ruled the ball had crossed the line and gave the goal
despite visiting protests that the ball wasn’t over the line and that Truesdale had been fouled
Despite still being two goals ahead on aggregate East Kilbride appeared nervy and Brora probed at the start of the second half for another goal
After Dingwall’s 35-yard lob landed on the roof of the net the Cattachs did bag their third of the afternoon in the 56th minute to make it 5-4 on aggregate
Max Ewan did brilliantly on the right flank to wriggle out of a challenge
he then played a one-two with Tom Kelly before crossing for Sutherland to sweep into the net from 10 yards
Unfortunately the home side conceded again within two minutes as Nathan Flanagan crossed from the left and Elliott’s flick on presented Joao Balde with a tap-in at the back post
The concession of the second goal halted Brora’s momentum and in the 78th minute East Kilbride secured their spot in the play-off final
Wallace Duffy was adjudged to have tripped sub Scott Ferguson and after referee Graves pointed to the spot
Ferguson fired the penalty into the bottom left corner

With just a month to go until the end of the 16-week closure of the East Kilbride-Glasgow Central line engineers have now completed laying new tracks and installing overhead power lines on the route
specialist teams have been working around-the-clock to install the new infrastructure needed to power electric trains as part of a £140m investment by the Scottish Government
So far during the closure Network Rail has:
Over the next four weeks – ahead of the reopening of the line on May 18 – engineers will finish the installation of new signalling systems on the route and complete work on the new Hairmyres station
A new two-platform station with an accessible footbridge
the new Hairmyres will open for passengers next month and is located around 500m west of the old station
Being delivered in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council
the new £7.2m transport interchange at Hairmyres will provide park and ride and bus interchange facilities
which include approximately 500 spaces and traffic signal-controlled junctions to access the car parks
there will be new active travel connections and cycle parking
as well as an upgraded junction nearby and a new pedestrian crossing on Eaglesham Road. The south car park and approximately half of the north car park at the station will be ready by 18 May
with the remaining north car parking area to finish over the summer
said: “The complex engineering work we have completed over the past three months is critical to the successful electrification of the line
“Our engineers have been working around-the-clock to deliver these enhancements as quickly as possible and we remain on course to welcome passengers back onto the railway in May
“We understand the inconvenience the closure has caused for both customers and some of our neighbours and we thank them for their patience while we build a better
greener railway for the local community.”Colin Park
Transportation and Fleet Services at South Lanarkshire Council
said: “Travelling by bus and rail in East Kilbride has always been popular and with the two new stations and all the other associated works
this will continue to make traveling by public transport attractive for residents of East Kilbride
“It’s great to see the speed at which a project of this scale has been brought forward and I’m sure passengers will benefit greatly as they return to use these new facilities next month.”
Once the overall project completes in December 2025
Throughout the 16-weeks, no train services are running to East Kilbride until 18 May, with a replacement bus service operating – please check via scotrail.co.uk/east-kilbride-enhancement-project

BRORA Rangers have a mountain to climb if they are to keep their dreams alive of being promoted to League Two
the Highland League champions face Lowland League champions East Kilbride in the second leg of the League Two play-off semi final after losing the first leg 4-1 last week
The Cattachs need to find at least three goals to force the semi final into extra time after a disappointing performance at the K Park Training Academy last Saturday
East Kilbride took the lead after 21 minutes when an unchallenged Nathan Flanaghan connected with a pass from Jack Leitch to fire past goalkeeper Cammy Mackay from eight-yards out
East Kilbride doubled their advantage when the Brora defence failed to clear a cross from John Robertson
A scramble in the box eventually found its way to Sean Fagan who drilled the ball into the bottom left corner of the net
Brora came out better after the break as they looked to pull themselves back into the tie and pulled one back midway through the second half
Shane Sutherland sent a cross into the box which found Max Ewan unchallenged and he fired a shot past goalkeeper Chris Truesdale to make it 2-1
East Kilbride were reduced to 10 men in the 67th minute when Jordan McGregor was sent off for receiving his second yellow card for a challenge on Craig Mackenzie
East Kilbride managed to restore their two-goal lead eight minutes from time
The hosts pounced on a loose ball as Cameron Elliott launched a breakaway attack and sent a pass through to Leitch who fired past Mackay to make it 3-1
The last kick of the game saw East Kilbride make it 4-1 when a foul at the edge of the box allowed Reegan Mimnaugh to launch a sensational free kick past Mackay
The winners of the semi final will face either Bonnyrigg Rose or Forfar Athletic in the play-off final with who finishes bottom of League Two set to be decided on the final day of the season
Bonnyrigg Ross are currently bottom of League Two on 33 points with Forfar Athletic two points ahead on 35
Forfar Athletic have a better goal difference of 10 as League Two goes into the final weekend on Saturday
Forfar Athletic are set to host Stirling Albion at Station Park while Bonnyrigg Rose will travel to Stranraer looking for a win to avoid the play-off
Brora Rangers won the Highland League for the fifth time in their history this season
It was the first time the club have managed to complete a clean sweep of all three trophies as they won the North of Scotland Cup in October and Highland League Cup last month
however Queen’s Park ran out 6-2 winners against Lowland League leaders East Kilbride to reach our first national cup final in 125 years
Queen’s gave starting opportunities to Jack Wills in goals
new signing Ben Jackson and Rocco Rocco Hickey-Fugaccia
with Cal Ferrie and Nikola Ujdur moving to the bench
Zach Mauchin failed to recover from an injury sustained at the weekend against Morton
which saw Louis Longridge slotting in at right back
Fans present at a chilly evening at The city Stadium had hardly settled to their seats when Queen’s went ahead after 45 seconds
A neat pass forward found Zak Rudden in space and the Queen’s forward ran on and lashed an unsavable shot into the net to give the Spiders a dream start
Lowland League leaders East Kilbride shrugged off that early set back
forcing 2 corners in quick succession around the quarter hour mark
however both were dealt with by the Queen’s defence
Queen’s grabbed a second goal after 22 minutes following a run down the right wing by Rocco Hickey-Fugaccia whose cross was driven home by the on rushing Ryan Duncan
A third wasn’t far away as a meandering run by Jack Turner saw him float past 3 defenders
however his cross into the box just eluded the Queen’s forwards
East Kilbride continued to play neat football and had a shot well saved by Wills in the Queen’s goal after 28 minutes
A goal for the visitors was only delayed however
as a shot from Jack Leitch on the half hour mark found the back of the Queen’s net
Will Tizzard had a mazy run forward after 41 minutes halted by the East Kilbride defence and from that Queen’s attack
East Kilbride raced up field and a smart save from Wills gave the visitors a corner as the clock nudged towards half time
The subsequent corner was played in with pace and found the head of David Ferguson to level the scores just before the break
The pace of the game continued as the first half ended
with both sides getting the ball down and playing a swift passing game on a more than decent surface at The city Stadium
Duncan and Turner both picked up yellow cards for the hosts in a busy opening spell at the start of the second half
Queen’s fitness began to tell with Rudden and Rocco having efforts which failed to trouble Matthew Connelly in the East Kilbride goal
The visitors were still well in the game however
and Wills had another smart save just after the hour mark
Queen’s made a number of substitutions in an effort to force a winner
however a couple of shots from Turner in quick succession failed to tip the scoreline in Queen’s favour
it was the visitors who nearly snatched a late winner
with a fierce shot from the edge of the box striking a post before being cleared by the Queen’s defence
There was no further scoring as referee Lloyd Wilson blew for full time – an extra 30 minutes was required to find a winner
The first period of extra time was just over a minute old when Queen’s went ahead curtesy of a shot from the edge of the box from substitute Reece Evans which flew into the top corner
Things got even better for the Spiders when a Ryan Duncan free kick after 97 minutes crashed back off the bar
only to hit the unfortunate East Kilbride keeper who could only watch in vein as the ball trundled into the net
A minute later the tie was effectively ended when a Ryan Duncan through ball found Zak Rudden racing clear and the big striker bagged his second goal of the game in fine style
with the visitors finding it hard to make any impression on the Queen’s defence
The scoring was wrapped up after 109 minutes when a short corner was played to Longridge whose first time cross into the box was fired into the net by Reece Evans to make the final score 6-2 for Queen’s

South Lanarkshire Council is to formally object to a plan to move East Kilbride into Glasgow for some election purposes
The decision was unanimously agreed by councillors at a full Council meeting on Wednesday 19 February
It followed the presentation of proposals by Boundaries Scotland
which is the body responsible for reviewing Scottish Parliament boundaries and making recommendations for both constituencies and also for regions
In a set of amended recommendations for the Scottish Parliament elections in 2026
Boundaries Scotland has suggested East Kilbride constituency should be moved into Glasgow region for list MSP voting
councillors complained this would separate East Kilbride from its many strong Lanarkshire connections
The latest recommendation from Boundaries Scotland followed an earlier proposal that East Kilbride
should be moved from Central Scotland region to South Scotland region
as well as East Kilbride joining Glasgow region
Larkhall and Stonehouse would be included in a new Central Scotland and Lothians West region
Councillors also expressed concern at that recommendation and authorised officers to submit a counterproposal
following urgent consultation with political group leaders
before a consultation deadline of 24 February 2025

Hearts B were defeated 3-2 by East Kilbride at Ainslie Park on Tuesday night
Angus Beith made one change for the visit of East Kilbride as Dom Plank returned to the starting line-up in place of Alfie Osborne
The visitors came into this one on the back of two heavy defeats and while they would’ve been looking for a response in the capital
they got off to the worst possible start as the men in maroon opened the scoring inside 90 seconds
It wasn’t Kilby stopper Craig Truesdale’s finest moment and after the visitors got away with one as Matty Gillies charged down the ‘keepers’ clearance
he presented the ball straight to Aiden Haddow from the resulting free kick
Slipping as he tried to make amends for his error
it was a simple task for the midfielder to slot home
The visitors were given the perfect opportunity to respond just five minutes later as Joao Balde was brought down in the penalty box by Ryan Duncan
Kilby were enjoying the majority of possession
with many of their efforts coming from long-range
Just as it looked like the Wee Jambos were going to head down the tunnel with the lead
The men in maroon squandered a brilliant chance to regain their lead just seconds after the restart as Matty Gillies looked to square the ball for Mackenzie Ross
but the pass was just outwith the reach of the forward and Kilby survived
The Wee Jambos were punished for that missed opportunity straight away as Cameron Elliott tapped home from close range after good play down the left wing
Hearts levelled the scores once more on 57 minutes
It was initially a nice turn in midfield from Haddow
before working the ball right to Gregor Crookston
The full back found Dom Plank on the edge of the box
and he reversed his shot back across goal and in at the near post
Kilby restored their advantage on 66 minutes
Henry James looked to have a good case for a push when attempting to win an aerial duel but as play continued
the ball was cut back for Leitch to grab his second of the evening and put the visitors back in front
Hearts huffed and puffed in search of the equaliser once more
but it wasn’t to be as the visitors held on to take all three points
Speaking to the Official Hearts Website at full-time
“I think individually I was expecting more
I think individually across the pitch we didn't get the better of our opponent more often than not
We didn't find ways in possession to outwit our opponent and get the better of them
“And then they picked up more second balls
where we could have gone 2-1 up and then maybe could have levelled the game
I just wanted to see us take the ball under pressure a wee bit more and compete a wee bit better.”

The politician has demanded that the Scottish and UK governments act now to protect children from cyberbullying
and exposure to content that is not age appropriate
She has published a four-point plan of action which states that the UK Government should immediately consider whether to raise the minimum age at which children can have their own social media account to 16

Ms Reid is also calling for legislation that would make it illegal to sell any child under-16 a smartphone – though they should still be allowed to get a simpler ‘feature phone’
The MP is urging the Scottish Government to implement a complete bad on phones in schools and wants the UK Government to toughen the law to ensure that websites hosting explicit or violent material are blocked unless they implement effective age verification and moderation
One in four children exhibit signs of smartphone addictionJoani Reid said: “Our governments have the power to protect our children and it’s time they acted
Unregulated and uncontrolled it becomes the perfect platform for bullies and pedlars of hatred
“Children of all ages are exposed to pornography
Boys are taught to hate women and girls by self-proclaimed misogynists
clothes and ambitions and instructed to obey violent men
anti-vaccination cranks: all are running wild
“As an MP I meet parents and teachers from across Lanarkshire who are deeply worried about the torrent of twisted and dangerous ideas that social media has unleashed."

Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper in Adolescence(Image: Netflix)The recent Netflix drama, Adolescence
vividly showed just how easily teenagers can be manipulated online
It revealed exactly how young people, desperate to fit in, become easy targets for harmful influences and persistent bullying
Ms Reid described the drama as "disturbing" viewing because it’s firmly rooted in reality
She added: "Often parents don’t realise what their kids are seeing or experiencing until it’s too late
and anger—these are becoming worryingly common among teenagers
some families have lost children because they couldn’t cope with the pressures created by social media
No parent should ever face that heartbreak
too little is being done to protect our children
Tech giants making billions from social media won't change unless governments force them to
Governments in Edinburgh and London urgently need to step up
“Apps on smartphones are deliberately designed by tech companies to be addictive
They purposely use sophisticated techniques that exploit young people’s fears about missing out
We wouldn't casually give our children alcohol or drugs because we know they're dangerous
It's now time we seriously considered laws restricting smartphone sales to under-16s - not to punish
“I know more and more MPs from all parties share my concerns
I believe we can make change happen here."

Road safety improvements are to be made at two sections of the A726 Glasgow Road in East Kilbride and Strathaven.
The improvements are part of South Lanarkshire Council’s Accident Investigation and Prevention (AIP), Route Action Plan (RAP) improvement works.
The road safety improvements include enhanced/improved signing and high friction carriageway surfacing.
The works are scheduled to be carried out in two phases.
Phase one, which is located adjacent to Beechwood Cattery, will begin on Monday 24 February and is programmed to be completed by Friday 28 February, weather and resources permitting. The A726 will be closed from its junction with Crutherland Highway and its junction with the access to East Kilbride Wind Farm during the works.
Phase two, which is located at the junction of Coldstream Road, Strathaven, is due to start on Monday 10 March and is programmed to be completed by Friday 14 March. The A726 will be closed from Westlands to Cloverhill Cottage during the works.
If either date changes for any reason, signs will be used to notify road users of the revised dates.
A diversion will be in place via A726-A723-A72-A724-B7012-A725 and vice versa.
Head of Roads, Fleet and Transportation Services, Colin Park, said: “We apologise in advance for any inconvenience these essential safety works may cause to road users.
“It would be helpful if road users could avoid the area if possible, and if not, to leave extra time for their journey and take into account the diversion route.
“We hope all road users will appreciate the improvements when the works are complete.”

Lowland League leaders East Kilbride threatened a shock win over Scottish Championship hosts Queen's Park before succumbing to an extra-time blitz in their SPFL Trust Trophy semi-final.
The visitors came from two goals behind to draw level at half time, but four goals in the last half hour secured the Glasgow side a place in the final against either Dunfermline Athletic or Livingston.
It took the side sitting fifth in the second tier only a minute to take the lead as striker Zak Rudden fired the opener, with on-loan Aberdeen midfielder Ryan Duncan finding the top corner after 22 minutes.
East Kilbride, who had already knocked out Championship sides Airdrieonians and Ayr United, fired back as midfielder Jack Leitch found the bottom corner 10 minutes later and defender David Ferguson's close-range header levelled just before the break.
However, Reece Evans slotted the Spiders back into the lead a minute into extra time before an own goal from on-loan Motherwell goalkeeper Matty Connelly was followed within seconds by Rudden's second - and fourth in four games - to all but settle the game.
Fellow forward Evans fired his own second in the second half of added time to complete the scoring and end the fifth-tier sides six-game winning run.
Queen's Park will find out their opponents in the final when their two Championship rivals meet at East End Park on 5 February.

Hugh Barr, from East Kilbride, was 28 when he was killed during an attack on the German-occupied town of Werwick.
2nd Lieutenant Hugh Barr, from East Kilbride, was 28 when he was killed during an attack on the German-occupied town of Werwick on September 30 1918 while serving with the 35th Battalion Machine Gun Corps.
The former insurance company employee had enlisted with The Scottish Horse on September 5 1914, and served in Gallipoli, Alexandria and Salonika before being posted to Belgium.
After his death a fellow officer recounted: “2nd Lt Barr went out on a daring reconnaissance during an attack, and his men state that his bravery and daring astounded everyone, and there is no doubt his action was the means of saving many lives and of helping to restore the situation at a critical period.”
He was buried on the outskirts of the town, and after the war his body was recovered and he was buried as an unknown soldier at Zantvoorde British Cemetery.
The bodies of Lance Corporal James Ball Baron MM and Lance Corporal Samuel Chapman suffered a similar fate, and they were both buried as unknown soldiers at Tyne Cot Cemetery.
L/Cpl Baron had been serving with the 43rd Machine Gun Corps when he died aged 29 on August 24, 1917 during a German counterattack on a position near Hooge which had been taken in a British attack two days earlier.
Meanwhile 19-year-old L/Cpl Chapman died of wounds on December 14 1917, after being injured near Passchendaele while serving with the East Yorkshire Regiment.
All three graves were identified after researchers submitted cases to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), which were then confirmed following further research by the National Army Museum and the Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (JCCC) – the so-called “war detectives”.
Services to rededicate all three graves took place at the two cemeteries on Wednesday, and were attended by serving soldiers of The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment and The Royal Yorkshire Regiment, and members of the Machine Gun Corps Association.
JCCC caseworker Rosie Barron said: “It has been an honour to have been involved in the organisation of these rededication services and to have joined the family of L/Cpl Chapman, their military family and the local community in Ypres in remembering these three men.
“The memory of each of these men has now been passed through generations of their families and they are all still fondly and proudly remembered.”
New headstones bearing the name of each soldier were provided by the CWGC.
Xavier Puppinck, director for the southern and central Europe area at the CWGC, said they were “honoured” to have played a part in ensuring the men are “remembered in perpetuity”.
He added: “After years of being commemorated as unknown soldiers, thanks to the meticulous research and collaboration of the teams involved, their graves now bear their names, ensuring they will never be forgotten.”
The service for L/Cpl Chapman was attended by his great, great nephew Tim Buescher, who travelled from Yorkshire to pay his respects.
“We are amazed that after all this time, Sam is found,” he said.
“This generation of our family, like many others, was hit hard by the Great War and as a result, these people were lost to us before we could know them.”
He added: “Being able to commemorate their life and their sacrifice, whilst mourning their loss, feels like they are being brought home somehow. Thank you.”
Reverend Paul Robinson CF, chaplain to 4th Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, said it was a “great honour” to be asked to conduct the service.
“It is important that we as a nation at opportunities like this today reflect on the enormity of what has taken place, the horror, the loss, the frustration,” he said.
“We must respect our values and our freedoms and remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice for our way of life.”
The previous UK Government had planned to move staff to a new location in Glasgow.
There are around 1,500 staff members based at the office, which was formerly the headquarters of the Department for International Development (DFID) before its amalgamation into the Foreign Office.
The move was drawn up by the previous UK Government, which had planned to move staff to a new location in Glasgow.
Concerns were raised about the security of jobs at the site again after Keir Starmer announced cuts to the foreign aid budget.
The Prime Minister announced that defence spending would increase to 2.5% of GDP by 2027, with a view to it hitting 3% in the next parliament.
However, to fund it, development assistance aid will be slashed from its current level of 0.5% of gross national income to 0.3% in 2027.
The news that the office in East Kilbride will remain has been welcomed by local Labour MP Joani Reid.
“This is the culmination of a huge effort to secure these jobs,” she said.
“The Tories made the wrong decision when they said these jobs would move to Glasgow, and ever since I was elected, I have made the case whenever I could that the new Labour government should reverse that decision and keep the jobs here.
“The retention of FCDO jobs in East Kilbride is not just a victory for the workforce, but for the entire town.”
SNP MSP for East Kilbride Collette Stevenson said: “I am, of course, delighted that the decision to move over 1,000 jobs from East Kilbride to Glasgow has been reversed. I have consistently called for the jobs to remain in East Kilbride.
“This decision, however, was only taken because the Labour Government cut the Foreign Aid budget by 40%, which will have huge ramifications.
“When that decision was announced, I arranged a meeting with trade union officials and heard of their grave concerns over their ability to continue with existing aid operations, as well as their fear for job cuts and expansion plans.”
A UK Government spokesperson said: “We’ve been clear that this government will take the difficult decisions, prioritising critical projects and ensuring that every penny of taxpayer’s money goes to where it is most needed.
“We remain committed to maintaining our presence in Scotland, however, this move is no longer financially viable.
“We will continue to further Britain’s interests at home and abroad from our joint headquarters in Abercrombie House.”

Engineers are set to undertake an intensive round-the-clock schedule for 16 weeks from January 2025 as part of the £140M project to electrify and upgrade the railway between East Kilbride and Glasgow
This development forms a key part of a broader initiative by Network Rail
aimed at reducing carbon emissions and increasing rail service reliability
service disruptions will occur during the intensive 16-week period from January to May
The infrastructure overhaul is then anticipated to be complete by December 2025
Key deliverables associated with this investment include the electrification of the 22.4km railway between Glasgow and East Kilbride
construction of several new stations and improvements to existing facilities
passengers can expect new stations at East Kilbride and Hairmyres
the latter equipped with two platforms and an accessible footbridge
along with a new footbridge at Busby station
Accessibility improvements are also planned for Giffnock with a fresh footbridge and a new station entrance at Clarkston
The project is being delivered by a team featuring Story Contracting
Artist impression of new Giffnock footbridge
the line between East Kilbride and Thornliebank will not operate train services due to comprehensive work on the track
bridges and the installation of overhead line equipment
a 22km stretch of new power cables will be laid and double-tracking extended between East Kilbride and Hairmyres
Clarkston and Giffnock will be lowered to accommodate the new overhead lines beneath certain bridges
A bus replacement service will be provided throughout this period to mitigate passenger inconvenience
The new Hairmyres station is expected to open by May 2025
coinciding with the completion of the initial 16 weeks of the electrification project
September saw two bridges along the route demolished to make way for the electrification infrastructure
These developments are seen as pivotal in enhancing the travel experience for passengers while supporting the broader ecological objectives of reducing transportation emissions across Scotland
Network Rail capital delivery direction Gerry McQuade said: “This programme of extended engineering works is a critical point in the delivery of the electrification of the East Kilbride line
“Closing the railway is never an easy decision
but the engineering work taking place over these 16 weeks can only be done when no trains are running
This approach allows the completion of these major works in the most efficient
“We do appreciate the impact this will have both on those living closest to the line and to our passengers
We hope that by advising people three-months ahead of the work starting
this raises awareness and allows people the time to consider alternative travel arrangements.”
ScotRail service delivery director Mark Ilderton said: “The works being carried out by Network Rail are absolutely critical in the latest phase of the project to electrify the railway on the East Kilbride line
we will be unable to operate trains to and from East Kilbride
and an alternate transport plan will help to make sure customers are still able to travel
we will communicate the plan through all our customer information channels
including where replacement buses will operate
and the other routes available for customers.”
Transport Scotland head of rail projects and technical services Damian Briody said: “This announcement marks the build-up to the latest phase of progress on the East Kilbride electrification project
“Whilst any disruption to passengers is unwelcome
we acknowledge the careful consideration which has gone into delivering the significant improvement works taking place during the closure
“It is welcome that Network Rail and ScotRail have listened to passengers in planning these works and that they will continue to work closely together to ensure these passengers can make informed journey planning choices.”

Almost 2km of enhanced road network will be built to widen the existing carriageway on the A749 and Stewartfield Way
to enhance and facilitate new junction layouts
There will be five improved junctions at the Mavor and Nerston roundabouts
which will be re-designed to new three or four-way traffic signal-controlled junctions
and a traffic signal-controlled junction constructed at the existing entrance to PlaySport
which would provide a new route into the Kingsgate retail area
More than 1km of new shared cycle routes will be introduced
and adding to the existing off-road cycleway adjacent to the carriageway
The cycle way will extend and tie into existing cycle routes in the area
Council Leader Joe Fagan said: “These improvements along Stewartfield Way will greatly enhance the current road capacity and provide further opportunities for active and sustainable travel
“We have identified areas where congestion is a problem and believe these new measures will reduce journey times and improve connectivity through the town.”
It was recently agreed that £32.2 million of the approved project budget of £62.2 million for the Stewartfield Way Capacity Enhancement project would be re-directed to the East Kilbride Town Centre Masterplan
That means £30 million will go towards the Stewartfield Way project
The combination of these transportation and direct town centre interventions is considered the best way to bring and accelerate sustainable economic growth
Construction on Stewartfield Way is expected to begin around October 2026
Relevant Full Business Cases for the project and associated subprojects will be developed for future presentation to the Executive Committee and City Region Cabinet
