It has now said that while construction timeframes are still under consideration – it does have initial opening dates in mind An Aldi spokesman said: “Aldi is delighted that both planning applications for new stores in Egremont and Whitehaven were unanimously approved by the planning committee in November last year “Aldi remains committed to developing these two stores to better serve the residents of Egremont and Whitehaven “At this stage our timeframes are still under consideration. We anticipate that the new Whitehaven store could be open in time for Christmas 2025 The chain said the two new stores will see a combined investment of £14 million go into the local economy full-time jobs will also be created and staff at the existing Whitehaven store will be retained It added that additional employment opportunities during construction of the stores and in the supply chain will also be created Aldi initially lodged a planning application for the Egremont site early last year – but faced several requests to provide more details on how the new store would impact traffic in the area The plans remained on hold for most of the year which prompted concerns from townsfolk that Aldi were looking at other sites for a new store in Whitehaven But Aldi later said it remained committed to both towns and had been working on plans for an improved larger store in Whitehaven and a new store in Egremont simultaneously A total of 251 letters of support have been lodged for the Egremont store with a further eight objecting to the plans and two submitting neutral responses Egremont’s Town Council also said it supported the plans for the new store For the Egremont Aldi plans to be approved a financial contribution of £6,600 has been agreed on with Aldi for the review of Travel Plan Monitoring reports While both National Highways and Cumberland Council’s highways team initially flagged several areas for further examination – including car parking provision bike provision and pedestrian access from the A595 underpass – both later issued no objections to the plans National Highways raised a number of holding objections to prevent the determination of the planning application until further information was provided by Aldi in relation to the impact on the A595 and drainage provision The organisation has now said it does not believe there will be a capacity issue at the East Road junction due to low flow on the road but that impact is expected on the main roads in the area and the A595 roundabout near the site which can be at or near capacity at certain times of day For plans to be approved for the larger Aldi store on Preston Street in Whitehaven a financial contribution of £6,600 for the review of the travel plan monitoring reports and a financial contribution of £50,000 towards the delivery of a parallel signal controlled crossing has been agreed on The existing Aldi is around 200 metres north of the new site on Preston Street The new site is currently used as a pay and display car park and Aldi said the site offered limited opportunities for an extension The budget supermarket chain said it has explored a number of options to improve customer experience at the existing food store for many years as the store has an outdated layout and appearance – but that it felt relocation was its best option The new store will have upgraded access from Preston Street a car park with enough space for 100 cars and will employ 30 full-time employees Eight letters were submitted in support of plans for a larger Aldi store in Whitehaven while three people objected to it More details on a £3 million bid to develop and revitalise Egremont have been revealed Egremont’s Town Team has developed three projects that aim to improve the town that is putting forward in a bid to obtain the money from Borderlands Inclusive Growth Funding The improvement projects include the redevelopment of the former Red Lion site the development of Florence Arts Centre and plans to improve street signage and parking space for a range of vehicles to better connect the town If the bid is successful – work on each of the projects would take place over the next few years A drop-in session was held yesterday afternoon and evening on the plans in Egremont Market Hall where further details on the improvement projects were revealed This project will see the redevelopment of the former Red Lion Hotel site to provide a new The site has been vacant since February 2020 when the hotel was demolished – leaving a gap and empty space between buildings on main street Several ideas for an accessible public park-style greenspace or open courtyard have been put forward for the site These ideas include a landscaped courtyard offering outdoor seating pop-up indoor space – such as shipping containers – for vendors or workshops Other options for the site include turning it into a park-style greenspace Facilities on site could include public toilets large areas of planting to create a quiet space away from the main street a play area and the conversion of an existing unit in the centre of the site for vendors or local people looking to host meetings or workshops All design ideas have also put forward ideas for how the site would be accessed from main street wall or other kind of frontage must be created in line with heritage conservation efforts in the town Ideas include creating a wall of open archways creating a raised gateway to the site to re-establish the roof line of buildings on the main street The redeveloped site would also connect via gated access to Beck Green Car Park A raised table crossing is also being considered to create safer access to the site from market place Future development of a boarded up vacant building to the rear of the site is also a possibility This project will develop the cultural and heritage offer at the centre while improving public access to the site and expanding opportunities for the community artists and creative groups to use the space there The arts centre has trebled its visitor figures in recent years and is aiming to improve its facilities and create a new entrance and a bigger cafe space with the support of the Borderlands funding Ideas to boost site accessibility through improved landscaping carparking and town signage are also being put forward along with plans to improve lighting in the underpass on Little Mill Road The centre also has plans to incorporate green technology in its improvement works to support its sustainability goals This includes ideas to better insulate the main building and explore the use of things like solar panels on site In the long run – the centre is aiming to obtain funding to undertake a larger redevelopment of the site which could include the creation of artist studios holiday pods and more to help bring visitors to the town Plans to add footway inlays to support a Town Trail and improve the main street are also being considered campervan spaces and facilities and additional cycle parking made up of representatives from the community He said: “This is the start of what we have been talking about for a long time we all want the best for our town and this regeneration plan is about doing things together in partnership and it involves every part of the community “Egremont is being recognised as a land of opportunities and the plans we’ve put forward are really ambitious “We’re five minutes from the fells we’re right next to the area’s major employer Sellafield culture and heritage and our castle is the jewel in the crown “We’ve also got plans for 250 new homes in the area we have Growing Well and Florence Arts Centre and the new Aldi on the way “So why wouldn’t we be ambitious We live in the best place in Cumbria and we should have had this a long time ago But I am confident we will get the funds we need and I am really enthused by the plans we have for the future We are going to deliver real regeneration to this town.” An online survey to have your say on the plans is still available to be completed until Wednesday January 8 at www.cumberland.gov.uk/have-your-say Budget supermarket chain Aldi says it is still committed to a new Egremont store despite planning delays The firm is aiming to obtain permission to build a new supermarket on the site of the former East Road Garage in Egremont It initially lodged a planning application with Cumberland Council in February this year – but has since faced requests to provide more details on how the new store would impact traffic in the area Despite the delays – the firm said it remains committed to bringing a new store to the town and is hoping to receive a decision on its plans for the site in the coming months An Aldi spokeswoman said: “Aldi has ambitious plans for continued investment across Cumbria to help meet growing demand from our loyal customer base and improve access to our award-winning low-cost “We are committed to serving the community of Egremont and submitted our planning application to Cumberland Council for a new store in February 2024 “Since the application was submitted we have been working with Cumberland Council to progress our plans and hope that it will be determined by the Planning Committee in the coming months “We are confident that there is demand for a new store in Egremont and believe that our proposals will help to reduce travel times for many of our customers.” National Highways is recommending that planning permission for the new store should not be approved until November 28 to allow Aldi extra time to examine the potential safety and congestion impacts of the store on the A595 Cumberland Council’s highways team have flagged several areas for further examination – including car parking provision bike provision and pedestrian access from the A595 underpass Highways additionally flagged that Aldi’s initial transport assessment has not been modelled around the ‘very heavy’ traffic that the roundabout currently experiences at peak times during the day It said that the roundabout and its links can be at or near capacity at certain times during the day and that the current transport assessment has only accounted for an uplifted 2024 scenario that would work with minimal queueing The plans for the new store have now been on hold for most of the year – which prompted concerns from townsfolk that Aldi were looking at other sites for a new store in Whitehaven But Aldi said earlier this year it remained committed to both towns and is working on plans for an improved larger store in Whitehaven as well as a new store in Egremont simultaneously If plans are approved by Cumberland Council – who make the final decision on the application – the new Aldi will be a £6 million investment into the area and will provide a total of 40 full-time and part-time jobs Egremont Town Council has also responded to the plans and said it was in overall support of the new business and that it would be an asset to the town The town council added that it would additionally expect Aldi to adopt the town’s underpass and keep it clean A £3 million bid is being developed to help revitalise Egremont A town team has developed three projects to put forward for cash from Borderlands Inclusive Growth Funding people will have a chance to have a closer look at the proposals next Tuesday between 2pm and 7pm at Egremont Market Hall This project will develop the cultural and heritage offer at the centre and involve both construction and landscaping work to improve access and increase opportunities for the community while also incorporating green technologies made up of representatives from the community He said: “We are delighted to be welcoming members of the public to our exhibition “We want people to input into the development of the projects so we can be sure we are progressing what is right for Egremont added: “These plans have been developed by representatives of the Egremont community and now it is time to share them wider It is important that everyone in the area is given the opportunity to have their say An online survey will also be
