Sustrans Scotland is working in partnership with the community to collaboratively reimagine Main Road’s public space, with support from Renfrewshire Council. The ‘Elderslie for Everyone’ project asks local residents, businesses and all who have an interest in the area to come together to create and design improvements. Sustrans Scotland hosted the event at Elderslie Village Hall in August, where experts were on hand to provide technical knowledge and support the 60 residents and representatives of the local business community who attended to submit their thoughts to make the streets more vibrant, enhance the walking, wheeling and cycling infrastructure, and generally make the area a more attractive place to live, work and visit. All were invited to contribute ideas during workshops using a scale model of the area in order to come up with design solutions together to issues identified in the previous Discover event which took place in April. The team will now take all of the feedback and data accrued and use it to inform the next design stage. To ensure that any improvements are designed with the local community, Sustrans Scotland will continue to carry out community surveys, meet with businesses and local community groups in-person, deliver workshops with local schools, engage with elected members and hold further public engagement events in the village. Details about the next public engagement event will be mailed locally and posted on social media and the project website at www.elderslieforeveryone.co.uk The project is focussing on the on-road section of the National Cycle Network which runs from the near the old railway station to opposite Wallace Court Residential Care Home – and includes the green space in Stoddard Square near Elderslie Coffee Shop – and will bring the community on board from the ideas phase to completion of a finalised design. Marion Eele, Project Lead, Co-Design, Sustrans Scotland, said: “Thank you to everyone who came to Elderslie Village Hall to learn more about Elderslie for Everyone and take part in our workshops to come up with design solutions to issues identified in the Discover phase. “It was a fantastic opportunity for the Sustrans Scotland team and our project partners Renfrewshire Council to understand the community’s vision for the area. “Anyone who was unable to make it can see the design objectives and learn more about the findings on the project website. “The project team will collate all community feedback before presenting findings at a future date.” Councillor Michelle Campbell, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board, said: “The Elderslie for Everyone project is a great example of the benefits of working in partnership with the local community to improve the area. “Local people understand their community better than anyone and I’m so encouraged to see so many of them get involved in the project workshops and play an active role in developing ideas for the Main Road public spaces in Elderslie. “Along with the local community, I look forward to seeing the proposals for how this project will be taken forward in the future.” Elderslie for Everyone is funded by the Scottish Government through Sustrans Scotland’s National Cycle Network Urban programme. The initial application seeks 30 years approval Various management plans would cover impacts including air quality "Biodiversity credits" would be bought to offset "residual impacts" The scoping report said the quarry would dispatch trucks from 6am six days a week Monday to Friday would be 12 hour trucking shifts and Saturday would be seven hours Trucks would not run on Sundays or public holidays As many as 30 laden trucks an hour would be dispatched at "peak" times Considering empty trucks running to fill at the quarry this equates to 720 truck movements over a single 12-hour operating day there would be 220 truck movements a day to and from the quarry during peak periods Stanhope and Elderslie roads through Branxton to the New England Highway and Hunter Expressway The quarry would "primarily target" concrete batching factories around Sydney The developers already have "pre-commitment" for about 500,000 tonnes-a-year to go to Hunter local government areas rural and regional roads are not built to take the continual weight Historic one-lane Elderslie Bridge certainly isn't Elderslie resident and Singleton mayor Sue Moore told me she's very concerned about trucks increasing safety risks and causing damage to the bridge As truck routes coincide with several morning and afternoon school bus operating times she said: "It's common sense not to allow trucks on country roads at the same time as school buses are picking up and dropping off young school children" The climate change pollution impacts of so many diesel trucks approved to run throughout the Hunter Valley and about 400 kilometres on the expressway to and from Sydney also concerns me greatly I know bureaucrats have listed 70 policies guidelines and plans the quarry's environmental impact statement would have to consider but these documents have not kept pace with scientific facts outlining the urgent need for immediate global climate crisis action approval of a development such as this would be expected to have pages of "stringent conditions" but would they be worth the paper they're written on What authority ever has the manpower - or willpower - to check all the conditions on all developments it approves What about public consultation and comment The community should be properly informed now and what better way than at public meetings Even Singleton Council has had its involvement in the decision-making process limited to making submissions to Sydney Whether you're a parent whose children ride local school buses I'll end with the thoughts of Brett Wild who runs a pet motel next door to the proposed quarry and I can't see how any business should be approved when its impacts could force another to close," he said Today's top stories curated by our news team. Known as Pittman Quarry, the state-significant development would be located at Lot 5 Springvale Road, Elderslie and Blind Creek Road, Glendon Brook, within the Singleton Local Government Area. The land has been used for cattle grazing in recent years. The scoping report, prepared for R & J Pittman says the project would cost up to $7million to construct and produce $2.5 billion in retail sales of hard rock over 50 years. "The intent of the quarry would be to supply aggregate and conglomerate suitable for road base and concrete batching in the wider region. The Applicant intends to capitalise on the identified quarry resource within the subject site, in particular in the context of current market conditions, being high demand and a low number of approved hard rock quarries in the region," the report prepared by Wedgetail Consulting says. Rock products would be mined by blasting. Bulldozers, excavators, dump trucks, front-end loaders, crushing and screening machines would then be used before the material is trucked off-site. Trucks would run down Springvale, Stanhope and Elderslie roads through Branxton to the New England Highway and Hunter Expressway. Much of the rock would be trucked about 200 kilometres down the expressway as the quarry will primarily target concrete batching factories around Sydney. Singleton Council has raised concerns about the use of the single-lane Elderslie Bridge as a primary crossing. Yet another hard rock quarry proposed for the HunterIn its response to the scoping report, it notes 'Elderslie Bridge is a Transport for NSW asset and is not currently capable of handling two-lane traffic across the bridge.' 'The current volume of traffic that uses Elderslie Road, Glendon Lane and other local transport routes is significant and there would be residential concerns regarding the increase in truck movements through Branxton.' The council also raised concerns about the interaction with school buses and suggested that haulage should not occur during school bus times in the morning and afternoons. Other haulage routes, such as those through Singleton or Luskintyre, also raised serious issues with roads and bridges. In the case of Singleton, the trucks would have to travel along Gresford Road and then over the Hunter River at Redbournberry. Elderslie resident and Singleton's mayor, Sue Moore, called on the proponent to begin public consultation. "This project will impact many people in a wide area, not just Elderslie, and as it's already causing a lot of anxiety, they should step up their consultation and explain their plans to the community," Mayor Moore said.
