2 Cray Wanderers U23s moved five points clear at the top of the SCEFL Development League West after a fine 2-1 victory against 2nd placed Erith Town at Bayliss Avenue on Thursday night  The Wands as a club have found the going tough against Erith Town this season and the Dockers inflicted one of only two league defeats for Cray early in the campaign winning 7-3 at Flamingo Park in September Cray despite a difficult playing surface making control and passing tough deserved three points here after scoring an early goal through Freddie Warwick before being pegged back by a soft goal before half time from Jake Cooper for Erith Cray though went back in front ten minutes after half time scored with some style by Victor Damyanov and defended stoutly to pick up three points which puts the title onus in Cray’s hands Erith do have two games in hand but Cray have the possibility of six points to be added for two matches called off by the opposition on the day of the match  Cray have won their last six games and scored plenty of goals including 21 in the last two games but this was always going to be a much closer affair and it looked like a game which would be decided perhaps on an odd goal  Erith started the game on the front foot and forced a couple of early corners which required stern defending in the 7th minute with Cray’s first real foray forward took the lead when the excellent Victor Damyanov already a goalscorer for the first team this season darted forward and into the area As keeper Tommy Taylor came to meet the ball Victor passed to Freddie Warwick down the right of the area who took the ball round Taylor but had a lot to do but with composure fired into the net  Cray began to get a grip on the game with Tom Borders to the fore and hooked a shot wide and then had a good chance to score a second but with time and space in the box saw his shot saved by Taylor and the ball was bundled behind for a corner  Then from a free kick out on the right Andy Dzontoh’s ball into the box caught out Taylor who left the ball but Borders at the left post headed the ball goalwards but unbelievably the ball was cleared off the line and then two blocks on the line saw Taylor grab the ball  Then Warwick exchanged passes with Damyanov and saw his shot deflected wide for a corner  The game then went rather quiet for a spell but in the 41st minute Erith pinched a goal when a free kick out on the left was floated into the box and a crowded six yard boc but Nathan Manwaring couldn’t claim the ball and squirmed around in the area for Jake Cooper to prod the ball into the net Both teams looked for a winner early in the second half with both winning a corner each but Cray were looking the more polished and in the 55th minute retook the lead with a quality strike  There appeared to be no danger when an Erith clearance was met by a header forward by Michael Ihiedi but the ball fell to George Brooke who broke towards goal and unselfishly laid the ball across for Damyanov who from just inside the penalty area placed a sweet strike which went wide of Taylor and into the bottom right corner  Erith nearly levelled straight away when a cross into the box fell invitingly for Riley Boyle but with time fired over the bar  From here Cray had the better of the game but used great game management skills to see out the three points The Wands threatened a third when Warwick fired in a shot which was held by Taylor  Cray almost grabbed a third goal late on when Jaylen Bains who was superb when he came on down the left set up Damyanov for a shot well saved by Taylor’s legs Cooper shot well wide in stoppage time but Cray had defended superbly and deserved the three points over the game Well Cray on 47 points lead by five points with Erith having two games in hand on 42 and play those games before Cray play again Erith play at Tunbridge Wells on 26th March and then at home to Rusthall on 2nd April with Cray’s next match at Corinthian on 3rd April Cray though are due to receive another six points for the late postponements of the home games with Glebe and Sutton Athletic and have Tunbridge Wells (16th April) and SC Thamesmead on 1st May Erith also have to face Croydon at home on 24th April at Sutton Athletic on 30th April and Kent United on 15th May  Cray Wanderers U23s:         Nathan Manwaring New Stadium 2025 | Front Page A note for Cray Wanderers supporters of a huge match tonight for the Wands U23s in the SCEFL Development League West as league leaders Cray travel to 2nd placed Erith Town Cray moved back to the top of the league it appears because of being awarded three points for the league game at home to Stansfeld before Christmas being called off by the visitors on the night after Erith had gone back to the top ten days ago Erith are a point behind Cray but have two games in hand but with Cray possibly receiving further three points down the line for the called off games with Glebe and Sutton Athletic a Cray win could be vital in deciding the division Champions Cray have three more games to play after tomorrow Tunbridge Wells (17th April) and SC Thamesmead (12th May) Erith have been something of a nemesis for Cray this season having beaten Cray in a pre-season friendly one of only two league defeats in the Development West London Senior Cup and also the U18s KYL Premier So Cray are massively overdue a positive result of some kind against the Dockers Here is the Sat Nav code and Directions for Erith Town FC Nearest train station is Abbey Wood which is served by SouthEastern Buses that stop near the ground (Lister Walk stop) are 177 401 and 472 (the bus stop from Abbey Wood train station to the ground is accessed via the front of the station turning left and is then a one-minute walk away) The ground is a good thirty five minute walk from this station Samir Carruthers scored his first goal of the season as Dartford secured victory against a spirited Erith Town side to progress to the next round of the Velocity Cup As the 187 supporters enjoyed a cool night under the Stanmore Stadium floodlights the two protagonists worked through a scrappy ninety minutes with neither side able to gain a sure foothold on proceedings The first real opportunity fell to the visitors after a late challenge saw them awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position in the eighth minute sending it straight through and beyond goalkeeper Nathan Edwards to give the Darts an early lead The visitors were on top for most of the first-half but just couldn’t add to their slender lead Eddie Dsane saw his effort saved well by Edwards after brilliant work by the lively Gabe Campbell (17) before the Erith Town shot-stopper was at it again to save an Olly Box strike after more good work by Campbell (28) In between those opportunities came one for The Dockers which saw David Aziaya saving well to prevent Harry Taylor from equalising after 19 minutes Yet that was pretty much it in terms of goalscoring opportunities as the visitors just couldn’t find that final killer touch after Jerome Jayaguru committed an awful challenge on Eddie Dsane right at the end of the half The foul left the Dartford dugout incensed that no booking was issued to Jayaguru as referee Mr Michael Scott awarded a goal-kick to The Dockers instead Dsane didn’t return from the half-time interval… his replacement being Denzelle Olopade Ady Pennock would follow that change by swapping Jeremiah Pinder for Samir Carruthers later in the half (72) boss Adam Woodward used four of his five available substitutions this evening Ramez Hefzalla and Callum McGeehan were replaced by Ollie Milton and Tom Ash (55) before Andrew Dythe and Harry Taylor made way for Sidney Petters and Brandon Hatega (74) If goalscoring opportunities were in short supply in the first-half then they were virtually non-existent during the second forty-five was that tackles were flying in quite often they began to pin the Darts back into their own half of the pitch Sidney Petters came close with a low drive from distance which David Aziaya saved comfortably in the 77th minute That was soon followed by James Miles surprising himself by having breached the Dartford defensive line a combination of him struggling to keep the ball down as well as excellent defending by Sam Odaudu and Luther Williams kept the visitors’ lead intact (84) The Dockers had a glorious opportunity to equalise in the 89th minute after David Aziaya slipped while under pressure trying to keep hold of the ball only for an alert George Whitefield clear the ball off the line to all but secure the victory Tyler Christian-Law almost had the last laugh deep into stoppage time but his curling effort flew narrowly wide of the Erith Town upright (90+3) as Dartford went into the hat for the next round of the Velocity Cup after a rather scrappy game which saw David Aziaya collect his second clean sheet in three games for the Darts Erith Town                                                                  7 Cray Wanderers exited the London Senior Cup but only after a sterling effort against a pretty much full strength Erith Town side at Flamingo Park in a game of eleven goals on a very chilly evening The Wands got off to a flying start and went two nil up after 14 minutes through goals from Tom Borders and Victor Damyanov Erith Town turned the game around before half time as Aaron Jeffrey Luke Leppard and Louie Clarke made it 3-2 to the Dockers The second half saw Erith make it 5-2 with goals from James Dyer and Harry Taylor before George Brooke pulled one back from the penalty spot for Cray in the 73rd minute A George Goodwin header made it 6-3 for Erith but David Boateng pulled another goal back with ten minutes to go The scoring though was completed for Erith three minutes later with another Taylor glancing header and capped a game played at a fast pace and saw a lot of excellent young players going at it in a captivating tie Erith Town now advance to the 3rd Round to a home tie with Harrow Borough The Wands were coached on the night by U23s manager Roy Brooke and fielded a side with eight of the U23s team in the starting lineup and five on the bench and took on an Erith Town side sixth in the Isthmian South-East and a team high in confidence The game started at a brisk pace which was maintained throughout and Cray took the lead in the 2nd minute when down the left Victor Damyanov’s cross into the box was deflected off an Erith Town player and chested into the net by Tom Borders Cray were the better side in the opening minutes and in the ninth minute had the ball in the net again through Borders who slotted in from Damyanov’s pass but was disallowed for offside Five minutes later Cray went two nil up when down the left Damyanov’s cross-shot again possibly via a deflection flew into the top right corner Erith Town though after a sloppy start began to get back into the game and in the 19th minute came close when Louie Clarke was played through down the right but Kevin Kardel in goal for the Wands did well to make a blocked save On the half hour Erith Town pulled a goal back when down the left Aaron Jeffrey on the edge of the six yard put in a cross which possibly took a nick off a defender and high into the net Four minutes later the Dockers drew level when Leo Mazzone’s accurate pass found Luke Leppard down the right of the area who took the ball round Kardel and stroked the ball into the net Cray almost restored the lead two minutes later when Simon Offei Gymaha was put through on goal but his shot was saved by the chest of Nathan Edwards Another goal looked on the cards and before half time the Dockers completed the turnaround when a ball from Ross Craig into the area nicked off the head off a Wands defender into the path of Clarke who finished well from 12 yards to complete a dramatic half Lincoln Hunter came on for Tom Borders who had to come off with a suspected broken foot and Erith began the second half well and James Dyer saw a shot saved by Kardel and for Cray Dyer saw an effort cleared off the line by Hunter Cray were still very much in the game and a George Brooke cross down the left towards the far post just couldn’t get a firm touch from Offei Gymaha and went wide Damyanov put in a terrific cross from the left which was glanced over the top of the crossbar by Brooke The next goal looked to be decisive and in the 65th minute came for Erith Town with Dyer hitting a speculative shot from shy of 30 yards which seemed to deceive Kardel and went into the net to make it 4-2 David Boateng and Ben Raper came on shortly after for Cray but in the 71st minute Erith scored a fifth goal as a cross from the left was turned in by substitute Harry Taylor Cray though had never given up the ghost and in the 73rd minute pulled a goal back from the penalty spot when George Brooke was hauled down just inside the area by Tom Hanfrey and Brooke stepped up to crash home the spot kick to make it 5-3 and spark hopes of a comeback two more debutants came on for Cray Wanderers with Callum Redman and Carl Anderson coming for the last quarter of an hour the three goal lead was restored on 79 minutes when from a free kick to the left of the area a ball into the box was met by a text book header from George Goodwin and beat Kardel at the left post Boateng was played in and finished with some aplomb past Edwards to make it 6-4 Erith Town were potent at this stage of the game and in the 83rd minute made it 7-4 when Hanfrey’s right wing cross was glanced into the net at the left post by Taylor There was still time for Cray to come close to a fifth goal when Boateng was denied by a good save from Edwards and following up Brooke fired over the bar Then Adrian Owiredu-Gyamera’s effort hit the side netting down the right In the end the more experienced Erith Town side advanced into the 3rd Round but were certainly given a tough workout and there were some fine performances from the young Wands side and will learn from the experience of playing a senior first team game Many of these players could be future first teamers and there is nothing more rewarding for a club to produce home grown players
