A new set of retirement apartments is now available to rent in Exmouth
a national developer of retirement communities
a later-living development for people aged over 70
The development includes 59 one and two-bedroom properties and is located on Merchant Avenue
The rental launch is part of a national shift in the housing market
with more older people choosing to rent in later life rather than buy
McCarthy Stone said the move responds to rising demand from people living in homes that no longer meet their needs
but who still want to maintain independence and stay connected to their community
Tenants at The Curlews have access to a range of on-site facilities including a communal lounge
There is also a 24-hour emergency call system
and a dedicated Estate Management team providing support
renting can offer a more flexible and convenient option for older people looking to downsize without the costs of buying and selling
Residents are offered Assured Tenancy Agreements
which allow them to stay for as long as they choose while maintaining the flexibility to move if needed
McCarthy Stone has reported that tenants often use the opportunity to relocate closer to family
or reduce the pressures of maintaining a larger home
recently chose to rent at a McCarthy Stone property in Gloucester to be nearer their son
“We reached the stage where trying to look after a big house and a large garden was too difficult,” said Laurence
“Our pensions allow us to comfortably afford the monthly rent
said renting at a similar development in Weybridge allowed them to support their children and grandchildren financially after selling their previous home
McCarthy Stone said developments like The Curlews can also benefit the wider housing market by freeing up larger properties for local families and reducing pressure on health and social care services
Rental prices at The Curlews start from £2,495 per calendar month for a one-bedroom apartment

Residents of a retirement home in Budleigh Salterton have teamed up with Devon & Cornwall Police in a heartwarming initiative to support children facing distressing situations
Volunteer knitters at The Firs retirement home have handcrafted a collection of teddy bears
which will now be used by officers to offer comfort to children and young people who come into contact with the police following traumatic events
The initiative was sparked by a visit from inspector Matt Helm, who oversees the Exmouth
Budleigh Salterton and Ottery St Mary area
During his initial meeting with residents and staff over a cup of tea
the home's knitting club promised to contribute to the force’s long-running use of ‘comfort’ bears
Matt said: “I recently accepted a kind invitation from The Firs residents to go along and meet them
Some of them wanted to sit in the police car and try on my hat
He has since returned to collect the batch of newly knitted toys and shared the significance of the donation
“Devon & Cornwall Police comes into contact with a huge number of children who have experienced trauma; they may have been involved in a road traffic collision
these kids come out of a situation with nothing,” Matt said
which are thankfully not required too often
are something that officers have used for a while and the bears were very gratefully received by me.”
He added that the knitters are now exploring new patterns to make dolls
said the residents enjoyed being part of the project
“We were delighted to invite the police officers to come and collect the comfort bears that were knitted by the ladies during their regular knitting club
The bears were presented by resident Janet who told me that she hopes these bears give comfort for children in distress
plus the staff really enjoyed the police visit!”
Other emergency services also use similar comfort items to help calm children during upsetting events

Last year South West Water was the worst offender for dumping raw sewage
Jo Bateman tells us what that means for her daily swim
“The first thing I do every morning is check my phone,” says Jo Bateman
Jo moved to Exmouth so she could live by the sea
she has been struggling with her mental health for years
But swimming daily in the sea has helped Jo reduce her antidepressants to the minimum dose
and a deep connection to nature,” she says
“as well as friendship with a wonderful group of people who also cherish this beach.”
But when Jo discovered in 2020 that South West Water was dumping raw sewage through four pipes on to Exmouth beach
“I started obsessing about all the health problems you get from swimming in contaminated water – ear infections
“I couldn’t go swimming on days when sewage was in the water
It was like South West Water was holding me hostage.”
Last year the firm was the worst offender for sewage dumping out of all the water companies
In Exmouth the company poured sewage out 217 times in 2024, for a total duration of 2,156 hours
keeping Jo out of the water for days at a time
And there have been more than 100 dumps so far this year
with 1,115 hours of spills from January to March
“The sewage South West Water continues to dump into our waters is disgusting,” she says
That’s why we’re supporting Jo as she takes on South West Water, standing up against a company that sent a fleet of lorries to unleash a tide of sewage. After Good Law Project’s landmark victory in the Supreme Court last year, she’s broadened her challenge to cover the 300 days over the last five years when people couldn’t swim off Exmouth beach
“We need transformational change,” she says
