A 15-year-old student from Southall has received a prestigious award at City Hall for launching a pop-up food bank to support families struggling with the cost of living
who is in Year 10 at Featherstone High School
was named Young Leader of the Year at the inaugural London Youth Achievement Awards
hosted at City Hall by the London Assembly and the London Youth Assembly
was established to recognise the contributions of young people across the capital
In the run-up to Christmas last year, Mohammed organised the food bank at Featherstone Sports Centre
household goods and toys to families in need
Featherstone headteacher Nathan Walters praised the initiative at the time
saying: “To be so kind and thoughtful at this young age
Mohammed is a credit to his family and his school
He really is proof that Christmas can still be a time for giving.”
Winners were selected by panels made up of Assembly Members and Youth Assembly Members
The event also marked the start of the Assembly’s 25th anniversary celebrations
The London Assembly acknowledged Mohammed’s work
stating: “Mohammed organised a pop-up food bank at Featherstone Sports Centre in Southall to give away food
household necessities and toys just before Christmas
Mohammed is already busy planning further pop-up events
learning lessons from his Christmas event to provide even greater support to his community in future.”
The success of the initiative has motivated Mohammed to expand his work further
he said: “I was delighted to be able to feed families that were struggling in my community.”
Mohammed added: “To see them so relieved to receive the much-needed supplies filled my heart with compassion
I hope to be able to do more this coming year for those people who need it in Southall
including a delivery service and another food bank
so do spread the word and if anyone is willing to help
said: “These young people provide not only a bright future for London – but the leadership and the change that we need right now.”
building and changing our great city – but far too often their hard work goes unnoticed.”

FLYING winger Benjamin Laguerre’s first-half double proved enough for Toulouse to secure victory over Featherstone on their return to Championship action
Maxime Stefani added a try late on for the visitors to seal the win despite Derrell Olpherts and Jordan Williams crossing in reply
Featherstone threatened early through a Clay Webb line break
but it was Toulouse who struck first through Laguerre
Lambert Belmas almost crashed over in the middle before the ball was spread wide to Laguerre
who touched down in the corner despite the best efforts of Connor Wynne
Jake Shorrocks’ conversion attempt drifted wide
Rovers looked to have levelled the game shortly after when Danny Addy pounced on a high kick spilt by Paul Marcon
however the score was chalked off as Marcon was adjudged to have been tackled in the air
The disappointment was compounded for the home fans as Laguerre then crossed for his second
this time displaying some sharp footwork to avoid the covering Jayden Hatton and dot down in the corner
Shorrocks was off target again for the conversion
but the halfback was able to tag on a couple of penalty goals following Featherstone infractions
pushing Toulouse’s lead out to two converted tries at the break
Rovers did look dangerous at times with the ball
and could have reduced their deficit minutes before the break
Wynne was unable to gather in a wayward pass from Hatton when Featherstone created space out wide
This continued after the break as Featherstone began to attack down the hill
The second half was largely dominated by the forwards as both sides fought for field position
and it would take until the 65-minute mark for Featherstone to finally break Toulouse’s strong resistance
Following a big tackle from Josh Hardcastle
which dislodged the ball from Baptiste Rodriguez
Rovers repeatedly threatened to cross the line before they shifted the ball right and Olpherts was able to touch down in the corner
Ryan Hampshire’s conversion attempt drifted to the right
keeping Toulouse’s lead beyond the one score
and the home side’s hopes of a late comeback were dashed with seven minutes to go as Stefani crossed for Toulouse’s third try
Olly Ashall-Bott’s grubber kick was spilt by Rovers
and Stefani gathered the ball and reached out for the score that sealed victory for the visitors
made no mistake with the simple conversion to give Olympique a 14-point lead with less than six minutes to go
Rodriguez was shown a yellow card for an off-the-ball tackle and Featherstone were able to add a late consolation try when Williams intercepted the ball as Toulouse looked to spread it wide inside their own half
Hampshire added the extras from in front of the posts
who suffered their sixth defeat from eight this season
GAMESTAR: Olly Ashall-Bott was a rock under the high ball all game and popped up at key moments in attack
including helping to set up Toulouse’s final score
GAMEBREAKER: Featherstone threatened a late comeback after Derell Olpherts’ try
but Maxime Stefani touching down with less than ten minutes to go left them too much to do

Source: British Screen Forum/Angeles Rodenas
co-founder and chief creative officer at UK high-end TV production company Sister
said she senses the TV market is shifting back to days of old
with big budget shows featuring Hollywood talent on the way out
long-form returning series making a comeback
not necessarily in a bad or a good way,” said Featherstone
during an on-stage conversation at the British Screen Forum
She has been in the industry for around 30 years
with credits ranging from ITV crime drama Broadchurch to HBO mini-series Chernobyl
it felt like a halcyon period for big budget TV shows
“We all knew in our hearts it was a bubble
and we were all prepared to take the shilling at the time,” said Featherstone
”I think deep down we all knew there was going to be a crash
and the last two years for producers there has been a crash
Budgets have gone up by between a third or even a half compared to four years ago
and streamers have turned to advertising-based models
Featherstone believes these advertisers don’t want risky shows
long-running series they know viewers will turn out for
network-style shows – Suits has been a massive hit on Netflix
they will be commissioning those more and more
20 years ago were mainstays of the schedule.”
Featherstone said she believed this will impact the type of talent drawn to TV
after Hollywood A-listers have increasingly turned to TV work in the droves in the past decade
“The need for mainstream television means they can’t afford those movie stars
the movie stars don’t want to do a TV schedule
We need to start creating our own TV stars because it’s cheaper
and that’s the ecology… I also think agents and talent are going to have to take a haircut.”
While Sister has recently produced a series for Netflix
Featherstone said she doesn’t believe big film stars are what brings audiences into TV
“It’s really hard when you’re trying to work with a buyer
and they can’t find any other criteria,” said Featherstone
a high-budget Netflix series starring Jeff Goldlum as Zeus
it doesn’t get that long tail… The reason for that [cancellation]
It was distinctive and unusual for Netflix and where [Netflix] sits now with a more mainstream audiences
For it to reach a big enough audience globally and be worth the cost
Featherstone welcomed the news Channel 4 has upped its budget for scripted. In August, the UK public service broadcaster announced it is doubling its drama budget
under recently-appointed C4 drama and Film4 head Ollie Madden
Channel 4 has wanted a couple of things we have been out pitching
Featherstone is on a mission to “make mainstream fashionable again… I think we’ve become a bit snotty
She continued: “We have to try to retain the younger writers who grew up with HBO
We have to broaden that a little bit – Inspector Morse
there is something very valuable in us trying to reach mass audiences with something very high quality.”
She also anticipates that streamers are moving towards more of a form of traditional scheduling
with their shift into sport and live event broadcast
Featherstone spoke of intel she gathered from a trip to LA last week
having meetings with studios about high-end TV projects
“They’re [US studios] coming here [to the UK]
They’re going to come here and spend more money.”
She noted the Independent Film Tax Credit for UK-qualifying features with qualifying expenditure under £15m as “brilliant” progress for the UK indie film sector
she feels measures need to be in place to protect UK high-end TV producers
but it’s not great for building a sustainable business model here
We need to look at how the tax break is applied
While Sister has not fully got its head around AI
currently only using it for internal presentations
Featherstone believes it’s important not to bury one’s head in the sand about it
The production company has a working group to try to understand how it could be used in a way that doesn’t supersede human creativity
“AI is something we have to be very alert to
She also defended ITV for a job advert it posted last month
that prompted backlash from screenwriters and content creators
“I really respect that they’re trying to understand it and get on top of it
Featherstone also believes producers need to engage more fully with YouTube and social media content creators
I haven’t worked out how to engage with that community

Sheffield Eagles celebrated their first victory of the Betfred Championship season with a hard-fought 19-12 win against Featherstone Rovers at The Millennium Stadium on Sunday afternoon
the Eagles put in a commanding performance to secure the two points
Head Coach Craig Lingard opted to rotate his squad for the visit to West Yorkshire
making several changes to freshen up the side
Masi Matongo was restored to the front row in place of Blake Broadbent
while Matty Dawson-Jones and captain Joel Farrell also made their returns to the matchday squad
Reiss Butterworth earned a spot on the interchange bench
showing early intent as they took the lead inside the opening five minutes
Corey Johnson broke through the Featherstone defensive line from dummy half
before expertly offloading the ball inside to Morgan Smith
who had the simple task of grounding the ball under the posts against his former side
as they looked to make their home advantage count
The powerful forward showed great strength to force his way over from close range
who dictated proceedings with smart game management and efficient attacking play
They regained the lead when Smith grabbed his second try of the afternoon
finishing off a well-worked move down the left flank
James Glover and Cory Aston combined cleverly to create the opening
sending Smith through to touch down and edge the Eagles back in front
The visitors continued to pile on the pressure and were awarded a crucial penalty just before half time
Featherstone’s Danny Addy was penalised for a high tackle on Jack Bussey
giving Sheffield the chance to extend their advantage
slotting the penalty goal to give his side a 14-6 lead heading into the break
The second half saw both teams engaged in an intense battle
with defences dominating for large periods
The breakthrough moment of the second half came in the 67th minute when Jack Walker spotted an opening out wide
Walker dived over to score his first try for the club
further strengthening Sheffield’s grip on the game
former Salford Red Devils forward King Vuniyayawa muscled his way over beneath the posts
The conversion reduced the deficit to just six points
making for a nervy closing period at The Millennium Stadium
calmly slotting a decisive drop-goal to push the Eagles’ lead to 12-19 with five minutes to go
That crucial play ultimately sealed the victory
securing Sheffield’s first win in the Betfred Championship this season
We now have a three-week break before returning to league action

The Giants looked to finish off pre-season on a strong note
as Jacob Gagai featured for the first time at full-back
with Fenton Rogers returning from his suspension
as he was brought down millimetres from the line by Rover’s winger Gareth Gale
however it was the hosts who did strike first
Reynolds sent Hardcastle bursting through a gap and Bailey O’Connor supported and raced past Leo Ward
the supporting Connor Jones going over underneath the sticks
as Leo Ward was adjudged to have hit Josh Hardcastle late off the ball when taking a high ball
and they made the penalty count on our line
as Zach Herring danced through Sam Halsall to score
with Giants being on the backfoot for most of the forty minutes
Luke Robinson’s side upped the intensity within the first quarter
restricting Reynolds to kicks out of yardage within his own half
and then came another flashpoint in the game
Oliver Wilson and Zach Herring were both shown yellow cards after the sides came together
a number of times that the sides had disagreements during the second half
Sam Halsall and Darius Carter saw the latter dive over in the corner the reduce the arrears
Featherstone wouldn’t look back from this point however
as we suffered injuries to Matty English and Sam Halsall
Jonny Openshaw supported a break and went over underneath the sticks to secure the game for James Fords’ side
as new recruit for Featherstone Toby Boothroyd glided through a gap to score and further extend the home sides lead
The game would end with Featherstone taking the pre-season win and we now move onto Hunslet in the Betfred Challenge Cup
Professorial Research Fellow at the Hellenic Observatory
who remains at LSE as a Professorial Research Fellow within the Hellenic Observatory Centre
shared some of his fond memories working at the European Institute.
becoming the ‘Eleftherios Venizelos Professor of Contemporary Greek Studies’ and Director of the Hellenic Observatory
I came having built a reputation for my research on the politics of the European Union – I'd recently co-written a book entitled
The Road to Maastricht: Negotiating Economic and Monetary Union
I was to largely switch my focus to contemporary Greece. I was conscious this would be a major challenge for me. Many friends beyond LSE were unaware of my interest in Greece; others queried if I might be seeing it as a ‘backdoor’ to some other move. They didn’t really appreciate my interest in the Hellenic Observatory.
2) What were your expectations when you first joined?
But the place was tremendously welcoming to me
I was really impressed by the LSE’s ‘can do’ culture
providing space for everyone to do their best
The European Institute was undergoing a major transition when I arrived
it was recovering from a difficult internal LSE review
My new colleagues would often bore me with its history
aspirant academics – there was a ‘buzz’ about the place
I would be asked to become Head of the European Institute – I was to serve as such on three occasions – and we shifted the focus to the future
very supportive. We developed and shared a mission: to develop and strengthen the EI. We became a model for other universities
And the EI looks much the same today.
3) What was the best part of your job?
I think the biggest single feature I’d mention was the positivity we developed: we were creating a bigger and stronger EI
I enjoyed cultivating new donations from outside philanthropists – getting used to talking ‘big numbers’ – to create new endowed chairs
I’ve also always got a kick from choreographing public events – the EI hosted many leading Europeans.
4) What has been the most memorable moment during your time at the European Institute?
I came back next day and taught a 10am seminar
5) What is your favourite place on campus?
The Old Theatre when there’s a big public event on
It needs a major refurbishment and this is planned
6) What advice would you give to current students here at LSE?
Look beyond your coursework and don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy so much else the LSE has to offer – not least
to be stimulated and have your horizons lifted

Hull FC went down 44-0 to an experienced Featherstone Rovers side in their opening fixture of the 2025 Women’s Championship season on Sunday afternoon
The hosts ran in nine tries at the Millennium Stadium and dominated the contest throughout
running away with the scoreline in the second-half
Pete Grayburn named his first team as head coach of the Black and Whites
with Jade Key and Nat Romano co-captaining the team
Williamson and Waller all lined up alongside Romano in the front row
Alyx Worth started on the wing with Lily Bunby
Abby Price and Olivia Turner lined up in the halves
Waller had a look at the line but couldn’t find a route over
Rovers quickly responded with a chance of their own
but Craven knocked on as it began to look menacing
Featherstone had another good chance on the ten-minute mark and Billington looked to be in for the first points
A knock on on their next set gave Hull the best opportunity so far
but an error kept the game scoreless after an end to end few minutes
It was the home side who opened the scoring on the twenty-minute mark
A bulldozing run from Brogan Churm saw her score under the posts
with Churm finishing off a well-worked move
The home side had another chance after half an hour
Grace Firth got over in the corner but was ruled out for a forward pass
but an intercept from Billington quickly put Featherstone back on the attack
who charged back inside for a try with just over five minutes to go
An early kick in the set was dangerous but Prescott was just quickest to the loose ball
Half-Time: Featherstone Rovers Women 14-0 Hull FC Women
with a good kick chase limiting Featherstone’s metres returning the ball
FC had to turn attack into defence quickly in the early stages though
but they transitioned brilliantly to keep Rovers out
A forward pass then denied the Rovers best chance a few minutes later
Romano was sin-binned on the 50th minute and the home side made the extra player count
Charley Blackburn burrowed over from close range
A brilliant run from Sutton got Hull into good field position before Featherstone knocked on
An interception from Rovers saw them get out of trouble
and Prescott finished off the break under the posts
Billington looked to have then scored on the next set
but good pressure forced a forward pass and Rovers were denied
Hull had an opportunity of their own off the back of a penalty
Featherstone scored their next try with fifteen minutes to go
Howarth broke from halfway and scored under the uprights
Harrison got over from close range on the next set
Craven scored in the corner with just under ten minutes to go
A Featherstone error from kick off gave the Black and Whites a late opportunity but FC couldn’t find a route to the line
The last act of the game saw Shavon Craven just win the high ball and dive over

The UK high-end TV industry needs an enhanced tax credit in line with the Independent Film Tax Credit (IFTC)
co-founder of Black Doves and Chernobyl TV production company Sister
Featherstone was speaking today in front of the cross-party UK parliament Culture
Media and Sport (CMS) Committee inquiry into British film and high-end TV
In the wake of Netflix arriving in the UK in 2013
Featherstone said below- the- line costs have shot up by around 40%
and above- the -line costs up around 50-60%
leaving the public service broadcasters (PSB) - BBC
Channel 4 and Channel 5 - priced out of the high-end drama market
A greenlight from a PSB now means a guarantee of around 30-40% of the budget
The rest of the financing has become near impossible to piece together
“This leaves us with a gap of 60% of the budget
which is more like indie film… I do believe we are now getting closer to that model [of financing] at that lower cost end of the programming budgets [under £3m per hour].”
Featherstone would like to see a similar uplift to 40% in relief that films under the £15m mark will now receive, following the confirmation of the independent film tax credit via the Enhanced Audio-visual Expenditure Credit in October
High-end TV production currently benefits from the standard Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit headline rate of 25.5% in relief
The collapse of distribution advances has made financing for TV even more treacherous
“British content is very hard now to sell abroad,” said Featherstone
citing the example of ITV’s Mr Bates Vs The Post Office
produced by ITV Studios and Little Gem, as a show immensely popular in the UK
that ultimately made a loss of around £1m
It is only the US streamers that have the deep pockets to spend, said Feathersone, and they are all also becoming more cost conscious. While Sister has worked with Netflix on Eric, Black Doves and Kaos
she lamented their lack of flexibility regarding rights ownership
“It would be hard to argue they are fully flexible
There has in the parts been some negotiation around bits of rights around the edges
But the reality is for most of the streamers their business model requires them to own pretty much all of the rights.”
“We’ve effectively gone from a manufacturing industry to a service industry… I feel as a producer for hire
Featherstone Rovers have identified Ireland head coach Ged Corcoran as a possible target to succeed James Ford at the club after his dismissal
Rovers announced on Tuesday lunchtime that Ford had left the club with immediate effect following a mixed start to the new season
They were beaten by London Broncos on Sunday afternoon
having defeated Doncaster in their first Championship game of 2025
That is after a significant off-season overhaul in which the club have recruited extensively in a bid to return to the upper echelons of the Championship
But Ford has become the second coaching casualty in a day
and the first in the 2025 Championship campaign
Corcoran is being eyed up by Rovers as a potential target as a replacement
He is currently on the coaching staff of Championship club York Knights
but is now being monitored as a possible candidate to step up and become a head coach
The 41-year-old is highly thought of within the game and has been in charge of Ireland ever since 2022
leading them in the most recent Rugby League World Cup
He is likely to combine the role at international level with Featherstone if he is appointed to the job of guiding Rovers to Championship success
the club said: “We wish James all the best for the future and thank him for his hard work through a transitional period for the club
Further announcements will be made shortly about the club’s plans moving forward.”

Home » News » Material passport pilot project: The Featherstone Building
Buro Happold is involved in the UKGBC Circular Economy Forum and the Orms working group on material passports
both of which are important avenues for generating discussion on the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing these passports
Although the process of delivering material passports may initially seem daunting
the most important step for every industry player is to simply start somewhere
In collaboration with the facilities management team at Buro Happold
the sustainability team at Buro Happold decided to use our new London office fit-out in The Featherstone Building as a materials passport pilot opportunity
Enabling material reuse at end-of-life is often a key objective for developing material passports
Given the high fit-out turnover rates and the typically short life spans of furniture
passports can also enable better the reuse of materials during their in-use phases and support the optimal repair and maintenance of materials to extend longevity
Input from facilities management was crucial to ensure the passports would be practical during building operations.
Buro Happold focused on select high carbon and high value items
instead of creating passports for every individual item
The information categories for the passports were based on existing industry guidance and tailored with input from facilities management
This prioritisation focused on gathering information for warranties
A blank Excel database was created and populated with as-built information which is now stored in the internal facilities management system
BW used Q Flow’s scanning technology to match delivered products with those in the passport database
automating the flow of relevant information
This trial provided several valuable lessons for the team:
Project teams handle various information sources
contractors and sub-contractors have different responsibilities and workflows
Translating information from the theoretical plans to actual installations in a building requires a single thread of truth from design to construction
inputting as-built data into passports may involve reviewing drawings
and following up with subcontractors—a time-consuming process that can significantly delay progress
It’s crucial to establish at the outset where information will be centralised and documented
This can start with the BIM model export or a basic material spreadsheet provided that clear expectations are set for where information will be collated
Construction sites typically receive thousands of materials and products.
These can arrive in various forms: ready-made (e.g
joinery products that arrive separately and need to be assembled)
or as temporary works not intended for the final design (e.g
It can be challenging to track where specific materials end up in the design and teams may not always know the total number of parts or if they will all arrive simultaneously
This complicates the inclusion of assembly and disassembly instructions in the product’s material passport
One way to address this challenge is by ensuring that naming conventions are consistently aligned
Uniform naming conventions ensure that all parts and materials are easily identifiable and traceable throughout the product lifecycle
especially when dealing with complex products with multiple components
It also facilitates easier retrieval of information in the future and allows for interoperability between systems
When delivery tickets are used to generate material passports
the product name must match those on the schedules
and such discrepancies can cause confusion
Uniclass codes have been proposed as a method to align naming conventions
it is important that schedules also include this naming
it is critical to agree on naming conventions and centralise documentation during the early product stages (Stages 3-4).
There was general consensus that a post-construction BIM model would be the ideal place to store information as it would provide the exact location of each product
Data integration: Using Q Flow did not allow for as-built data to be directly translated into the BIM model
a manual uploading exercise would have been needed
Document limitations: Revit models are limited in what documentation they can store
Material passports are often stored separately
leading to desynchronization with the Revit model
which at this point were not a part of the facilities management workflow
Health and safety requirements would also require some of the information stored in passports to be stored on a separate database
Health and safety requirements: Some information in material passports must be stored in a separate database for health and safety reasons
resulting in duplicated efforts.
Having two separate databases may require manual updates whenever changes occur
if the same product classification systems are used across these sources
BIM models could still serve as a final source of truth if these issues are addressed and considered early in the project
While gathering all the sources of product data presents its own set of challenges compiling information to support future material recovery is a straightforward concept
and achievable with the right level of data cataloguing
An important aspect to consider when preparing material passports is their future use
and supply chain members early in the process is critical to realising the future value of material recovery

A multidisciplinary team from Buro Happold led the fitout design of the space, working with Gensler architects to create a technology enabled
co-creative workplace that pushed the boundaries of sustainability
wellbeing and inclusive design.
our london office at The Featherstone Building is a hub for collaboration and creativity – featuring a range of spaces from open plan desks
larger meeting spaces and comfortable breakout zones – all easily bookable via an intuitive smartphone app.
Justin Phillips
Buro Happold Partner and London Office Director
said: “We wanted to create a workplace that embodied the excellence of our staff within it
Collaboration was essential to this process
and we engaged with our staff early on to understand what was really important to them
Our mix of needs is very different as we continue to evolve from traditional engineers to multidisciplinary experts and advisors
and the design of our office reflects that.”
Always looking to find new ways to embed design in every element of our daily lives and connect with others, we were delighted to introduce a sculpture to our private 5th floor terrace over summer. Co-created with Cake Industries
the sculpture features a circular seating bench and lush plantings to draw people outside
fostering a connection to nature in the heart of the city while offering a moment of peace
As well as enhancing the ways we work together
our new home inspired unexpected feats of fun and daring – from getting involved in the Standard Great City race around key landmarks like St Pauls to abseiling down our neighbouring Derwent building
we’re proud of our colleagues for raising money for charity while bringing people together
As we look back over all that our new home has enabled us to achieve in 2024
we’re also proud to have our commitment to leading sustainable design practices recognised with BREEAM Outstanding certification
Combining expertise from across our specialist teams
we strove to ensure our new office reached the highest standards.
we introduced measures to enable us to reach our goal
These included developing bespoke digital energy models to ensure efficiency throughout the building
setting a low embodied carbon target for the fitout
and undertaking a healthy materials assessment
We also established a circular economy strategy for the office that considers aspects such as adaptability and end-of-life material reuse and recycling in the event of future fitout of the space.
Justin Phillips said: “From the outset we wanted to put the sustainability of our new London office at the very heart of the fit-out design
aligning with our Net Zero Carbon commitments by 2030
We are delighted to have delivered on this commitment and for this to be recognised by our industry with our recent BREEAM Outstanding certification.”
we look forward to seeing what 2025 brings for our London office
and our global Buro Happold team beyond.
