It is now possible to travel from Wimborne to Trickett’s Cross
Ferndown (7km or over 4 miles) without using the car
The off-road route provides a safe pathway for walking
It also links to new residential areas and community facilities
With around 5,000 people commuting daily* to the Ferndown Industrial Estate and the three local schools
the route offers a realistic alternative to travelling by car
This route, funded by central government’s Active Travel Fund
completes a joined-up network of routes and bus improvements between Wimborne and Ferndown and aims to significantly reduce this number of people commuting by car
We visited the local Heathland House Care Home
said: “The new path has made walking and cycling to work a lot easier
“In my spare time I also use the path to walk the dog
The wider distance between us and the road has made a huge difference to my feeling of safety
It now makes me think twice when getting in my car to go to work or into Wimborne.”
lives at Heathland House and is excited to use the access from Heathland
thank you to all residents and businesses in Ferndown for their patience during the work
but one that vastly improves the experience for anyone walking
“We have gone from narrow and often bumpy walkways to wide and level off-road access from Wimborne to Ferndown
“With the large centre of employment at the Ferndown Industrial Estate and three schools nearby
this offers a safe and healthy option to get around.”
The improvements are the final part of the earlier new walking, cycling and wheeling routes along Wimborne Road East and Wimborne Road West Ferndown, completed in 2023. These were funded through central government’s Transforming Cities Fund
*The 2021 census shows around 5,000 people usually commuted locally to the industrial estate or schools
with 25 per cent travelling from less than 3 miles away

Changes are being planned for the Ferndown Industrial Estate including a new builders’ merchant and twenty eight extra industrial units
with parking for more than 20 cars and vans
The site is an existing vacant plot to the rear of 45 Cobham Road and is surrounded by other commercial buildings
A planning application decided by Dorset Council does not include any details about which company is likely to run the business
Ferndown Town Council has raised no objection to the proposal, which comes from Bournemouth-based Haycock Holdings Ltd
The other application is to clear the site at 1 Cobham Road
the former Allied Bakeries distribution centre which closed two years ago
and build 28 new industrial units together with a self-storage container area
The proposal from Ankers and Rawlings Developments Ltd
includes 1,400 square metres of flexible storage area with 2,400 square metres on small industrial units
for flexible uses aimed at starter companies
Eighty-five parking spaces are proposed as part of the proposals
Said a planning agent to Dorset Council: “The design of the proposed building is intended to appear modern and contemporary but still fit in with other general-purpose buildings within the industrial estate
“In order to maintain flexibility for end users the new units have been designed with a neutral colour and material palette to avoid the use of colours that might clash with occupiers corporate colours
“This also helps the new building to blend in more comfortably with their surroundings.”

Dorset Council is due to begin work on 20 January to remove deteriorating planters
sustainable planting scheme and functional seating, later in the year.
This project came about thanks to the work of Cllr Cathy Lugg and Cllr Mike Parkes
which outlined what they wanted to see improved
led to Litter Free Dorset carrying out an engagement exercise where people indicated that they liked the ideas of benches and planters
Following positive discussions with Ferndown Town Council and teams within Dorset Council
there is now a window of opportunity to start making those improvements a reality as the current benches and planters have deteriorated and are beyond repair
the trees contained within the planters are also in decline
This marks the start of an exciting new phase for Victoria Road
Ferndown Town Council has committed to carrying out the improvements and install new functional seating and planting
Protecting biodiversity will be a key focus of the new scheme
specially selected trees and sustainable landscaping to ensure the area remains vibrant
said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for Victoria Road to be refreshed and for the people of Ferndown to have access to a more flexible environment which will bring benefits for many years to come.”
Ferndown Town Council will work closely with local businesses and experts to design a flexible
This initiative aims to reinvigorate the heart of Ferndown
said: “I’m really pleased that this work is starting so early in the new year
and unsafe planters and the decaying trees will make way for a carefully designed landscaping scheme
will make any visit to Victoria Road a more pleasant experience for people and nature.”

whilst I understand the need for improvement- removing trees is not the best way forward
Climate change - we are being told will only worsen and the most natural way in dealing with this is to increase the trees not to reduce the road to a treeless concrete state
Even with planters for pollinators will not be for bio diversity
I live in Victoria Road and look onto two of the trees
have you ever stopped and watched the number of birds that use them
They are deciduous trees of course look dead in the wnter but come spring and summer provide a lovely camouflage for the residents who put up with some quite unsavory going ons
I personally view the trees of something of a beauty and to treasure
Please consider trees in Victoria Road as a must
Thank you for allowing the space to air how I feel.
I have passed your comments to senior officers and the ward councillors for their consideration when looking at the future planting and landscaping scheme
we appreciate your views and will ensure they are fed back to the team

Christmas in Ferndown has delighted the local community by featuring a Christmas market and a switch-on event for the Christmas Tree lights on Penny’s Walk
The event is organised by Ferndown and Parley Rotary CIO in conjunction with Ferndown Town Council
The free public event was planned once again for Saturday 30 November
but with only a few weeks’ notice – and after promotional materials had been printed – the organisers announced that the event needed to be relocated
the event will now be held in Penny’s Lodge Car Park behind The Barrington Centre and Ferndown Day Centre
The relocation decision came about after the managing agent for Penny’s Walk
required the organisers to make significant changes and undertake precautionary work relating to the need to park vehicles on the paved areas of pedestrianised street
A spokesperson for Tesco said: “We are always happy to work with the community on local events
and we are sorry that the organisers of the Ferndown Christmas event have decided they are no longer able to stage it at our site.”
Tesco added that the safety of customers and the local community using the stores in the precinct was its top priority
and that it hopes to welcome the event to Ferndown next year
A spokesperson for Ferndown and Parley Rotary CIO said: “Unfortunately
we were not able to reach agreement with the managing agent for Penny’s Walk to stage the Christmas in Ferndown event
I would stress that Tesco in Ferndown is a strong supporter of our Rotary Club and have helped us with our fundraising for many years
We will be holding our Christmas charity collections at the store again in December.”
Ferndown Town Council announced that the managing agent would not give permission for vehicles to use any part of the pedestrianised area
meaning it was unable to safely install Christmas decorations along much of Penny’s Walk
the council could not put Christmas lights onto the clocktower above the entrance to Penny’s Walk on Victoria Road
while the popular angel statue has been moved to outside The White Heather on Ringwood Road
Ferndown Town Council said: “The council could not agree to the conditions which the managing agents were imposing for the use of vehicles in the precinct and so reluctantly we have made the decision to relocate some of the decorations this year
“We hope to arrange a face-to-face meeting with the managing agents and land owner early in the New Year to address this and other concerns
“The council is grateful to Dorset Council and local businesses who have helped us in finding suitable sites at very short notice for the decorations which have needed to be relocated.”
The decision to prevent two major traditions returning to Ferndown’s town centre has caused frustration among residents and businesses
Local business owner Stuart Fleetham said: “To see all the aggravation that has been caused by Tesco and the land agent preventing an established event for the last 15-odd years on the land
and now they’re not allowing the Christmas lights on the clocktower like they’ve done [in the past] which is a feature of the town
The people and businesses in Victoria Road love that
and now they just have a few lights on lampposts and a tree
Ferndown was in the press as the town which Christmas forgot
its dangerously close to pushing itself back that way through no fault of its own
For an organisation to hamper local charities and businesses that are trying to do something nice for the community
Christmas in Ferndown will take place in Penny’s Lodge Car Park on Saturday 30 November from 11am to 5pm
Santa’s Grotto will be in the Barrington Centre as usual

How disappointing that the event won’t be in Penny’s walk
there is always such a festive spirit there
it’s the perfect place for the event
And how sad for residents that the lights won’t be there either

A council-funded café in the heart of Ferndown is to be shut down from the end of May
The council announced the difficult decision on Friday 11 April
in The Barrington Centre on Pennys Walk and opposite Tesco
has made financial losses over the last four years
and after consulting with an industry specialist
the council has concluded that it is not financially responsible to continue subsidising the café with taxpayer funds
said: “We understand that this news will be disappointing for many in our community
it is clear that we cannot justify continued financial support for the café when it has consistently operated at a loss
“Our priority must be to use public funds responsibly and ensure they are allocated where they can have the greatest impact.”
The council thanked the café’s staff for their hard work for the community and said that it is committed to supporting all affected employees
The council will work closely with them to provide assistance and explore alternative opportunities
Cllr Cordery added: “We ask that respect and kindness be shown to the staff as they navigate this transition
and we deeply appreciate their hard work and commitment.”
The council said it anticipates keeping the café open until the end of May to allow for a smooth transition
The council will continue to engage with the community to discuss alternative ways to support local social and economic initiatives

Lloyds Bank has announced it will shut the Victoria Road branch in Ferndown on 17 November
The closure will mean Nationwide Building Society is only high street banking provider available in the local area
Ferndown is one of 136 branches across the country that the bank intends to shut by March next year
Lloyds claims the decision is because customers are using mobile and online banking services instead of branches
customer transactions in the Ferndown branch are down 50 per cent in the last five years
While bank account closures may not inconvenience those able to use online banking
The government has stressed the importance of access to cash for older and more vulnerable people
Banking industry figures claim that 1.5 million people mainly use notes and coins in their daily lives
as it can be easier to budget with physical money
two thirds of users of the Ferndown branch are aged over 55
Darrell Trevor Lake said: “The reason we moved from Barclays to Lloyds was because Lloyds said they wouldn’t do this
Ferndown high street now is going to be over-priced charity shops and hair dressers.”
Ferndown Town Cllr Mike Parkes said: “Both Cllr Cathy Lugg and myself are very saddened to learn the last bank in Ferndown is closing at the end of this year
We pay tribute to all the staff who work hard supporting our residents in the branch.”
Cllr Philip Leach of Ferndown Town Council has proposed setting up a banking hub in the town
A banking hub would offer the ability to withdraw money and make payments at the counter and provide a facility for representatives of each of the banks to be present on different days of the week to deal with face-to-face queries from customers
A total of 13 banks support other similar hubs
Cllr Leach said: “In order to get a Banking Hub set up
we first need to request a review of Cash Access in our Town
and as many people as possible need to complete and submit it
so that we can trigger a review by Link/the Post Office to establish whether there is a need and sufficient demand for a Banking Hub.”

Charity, Ferndown | Posted on December 19th, 2024 | return to news
An adult social care centre has experienced a “Christmas miracle” after the Ferndown community rallied together and donated lots of books to replace 20 stolen from the centre’s charity book sale stand
the Day Service on Pennys Walk has operated a charity book stand
where books donated by the public are left for sale outside during the day
which relies on an ‘honesty box’ and donations from passersby
goes to charities chosen by workers at Ferndown Plus
But colleagues were left heartbroken on 11 November when administrative officer Carol Jones went to bring in the stand at the end of the day and discovered that one or more grinches had taken 20 Christmas-themed books without leaving any payment
we really enjoy raising money for charities and local organisations – it’s rewarding and it’s usually a charity close to our hearts
we put out all the books that are Christmas-themed
almost all were taken without any donation
“We were so upset that someone would take so many books and give nothing.”
Thorne posted a message on a Facebook community group to alert neighbours to the theft
supporters rallied around and donated a deluge of new books – more than enough to replace those taken
She added: “As soon the word got out to the local community about what had happened
“We had so many we were even able to donate some to the local Royal British Legion
We’d like to thank everyone for their donations and kind words.”
the centre has raised £1,567 this year and made 33 charity donations
THE Lloyds bank branch in Ferndown is set to close later this year
which also includes Halifax and Bank of Scotland
announced plans to shut 136 more high street branches across the UK as part of cost-cutting measures
which is set to close its doors on November 17
A spokesperson for Lloyds Banking Group said the move comes as more people have transitioned to doing their banking online
A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson said: “Over 20 million customers are using our apps for on-demand access to their money and customers have more choice and flexibility than ever for their day-to-day banking
Customers can also do their everyday banking at over 11,000 branches of the Post Office or in a banking hub.”
All staff at the affected branches will be offered a role at another branch or in another part of their business
Totally disgusting what about the elderly people who don’t do or can’t do on line banking Lloyds bank big bosses getting all the big bonuses you should be ashamed of yourself !!!!!!!!!
It’s almost printing it’s own money
This is the last banking Ferndown so we need a banking hub as a minimum
They closed Kinson and told us to use Winton and Ferndown now they are closing Ferndown
Shame on you Lloyds not everyone wants to do online banking
The postoffice is also not happy and I have heard them complain to customers that they are Not a bank
You are happy to take your bonuses but don’t give good service
Just how far do you expect people to travel to use a bank
You don’t care about your customer at all because you clearly don’t listen to them what a joke
I am in shock I cannot believe another local Lloyds is closing
When kinson closed we were told to use Ferndown or Winton
We do not all want to do on line banking and we shouldn’t be forced into it.The post office are not happy doing your work I have heard them complain many times
Tesco has stopped doing cashback and their cash machine is always out of money
You have a duty to your customers but you care more about profit than customers
I support vulnerable adults (mental health
learning disabilities) and some can’t access online banking
they need a branch to go in and talk to someone
I’m very sad that yet another branch is closing
I already have to drive 30 mins to my nearest branch (different bank)
If this happens I will need to find another way of banking as I was told Last year this wouldn’t be happening
I guess I will need to be using the Nationwide Bank next door as I refuse to use unsafe internet banking
what are you doing on it that makes you think this
I today received a cheque which I need to pay in
How far would I have to travel if Ferndown branch is closed
