across the region where the council's service replaced the former Ryedale District Council network The expansion of free public Wi-Fi is part of the council's efforts to improve digital connectivity across North Yorkshire The council has been working with the UK government to address the lack of digital connectivity in rural areas and has already delivered four phases of Superfast North Yorkshire contracts in conjunction with Building Digital UK (BDUK) These contracts have seen superfast coverage across North Yorkshire climb from approximately 41% in 2009 to approximately 97% in 2020 Town centre public Wi-Fi is an opportunity to draw people back to local town centres as a destination as more people continue to work from home It aims to promote local shops and services and create a different town centre experience Free public access Wi-Fi also offers opportunities for people with limited or no broadband to access vital local council government and health services and take part in the digital economy Filey Councillor Sam Cross is hoping that the free Wi-Fi will be installed in Filey before the start of the tourist season:  Scarborough and Whitby have had free public Wi-Fi since 2021 with Scarborough becoming the third location in the county to have service rolled out North Yorkshire Council hopes that the repairs to the sea wall,  which is located within the town’s conservation area will extend its lifespan by a further 50 years A long-term approach is being adopted for the sea defences in Filey as part of an overall multi-phase plane to extend its lifespan by 100 years Filey’s 1.1km stretch of sea wall was built between the 19th and 20th Centuries and shields around 800 properties a set of works would extend the seawall to the South to the Western side of Martin’s Ravine slipway with materials and dimensions to match the existing wall alongside the installation of up to three-ton rock armour to replace existing undersized rocks that were removed The wall would also be laid using steel sheet piles and reinforced concrete Filey Town Council said it supports the application and no objections were raised by Natural England A proposed 10 per cent biodiversity net gain element would include the removal of invasive species and the planting of non-invasive species on the site and adjacent clifftop The development will contribute to protecting Royal Parade from the effects of erosion in the longer term and planners said they did not envisage the works directly affecting residents or neighbours A council report prepared ahead of the meeting states: “This is a modest extension to the seawall and utilises design characteristics which are an exact match.” Members of the public are invited to attend the planning meeting at the council 6 months Jennings will also have to complete an extended test of competence He will also have to pay a victim surcharge of £187.00 “Jennings drove his van in a dangerous manner overtaking at high speeds on blind brows and driving on the wrong side of the road He narrowly missed a head on collision with an innocent driver and came close to a collision with a cyclist The punishment given to Jennings by the court is that of a slight reflection on the unacceptable decisions he made on that day North Yorkshire Police are committed to keeping our road networks a safe place for the public to use We will not tolerate this standard of driving and offenders will be brought to justice.” We will bring you more information as we get it Filey Town Council has asked for more information about a introduction of a temporary banking hub in Filey has been welcomed by the town's MP A new temporary banking hub has opened its doors at 16 Belle Vue Crescent offering vital financial services to the community 9am to 5pm and provides a shared banking space for customers of all major banks and building societies One of the key features of the Filey Banking Hub is the presence of Community Bankers offering face-to-face support for a range of banking needs Plans have been submitted for a permanent banking hub in the former Holdsworth amusement centre building but MP Kevin Hollinrake says the temporary hub on Belle Vue Crescent is a welcome addition The temporary banking hub will see different Community Bankers available on specific days of the week It offers a counter service operated by the Post Office where customers of all major banks can carry out regular cash transactions It also offers a Community Banker service where customers can talk to their own bank about more complicated issues on the day their bank is in the Hub: customers can use the hub's services even on days when their bank's Community Banker is not present The Post Office counter service is available throughout the hub's opening hours The decision to station Community Bankers at the hub is determined by the customer base of each bank in the local area Banks with more customers in Filey are more likely to have a dedicated Community Banker present The temporary banking hub in Filey represents a crucial step in maintaining access to essential financial services within the community particularly following the closure of traditional bank branches It offers a vital resource for residents and businesses who rely on face-to-face banking services and provides a sense of security during a time of change within the banking industry A former amusement arcade located at 38 Belle Vue Street in Filey has been earmarked as the site for a permanent banking hub is currently under review and open to public feedback a not-for-profit company established by UK banks and building societies Their proposal includes the installation of new illuminated signs and an air conditioning unit The plans emphasise maintaining the character of the early 19th-century building which currently houses residential flats on its upper floors with assurances that the hub will be wheelchair accessible and designed to minimise impact on surrounding properties This will be the second Banking Hub to open in North Yorkshire following Knaresborough There are two more hubs planned for Richmond and Whitby “I’m happy to announce that our temporary Banking Hub in Filey is now open Residents can now enjoy access to cash and face-to-face services once again We’ll be able to provide an update to the community on a permanent location for the Hub soon.” “I know that many residents and businesses in Filey have eagerly anticipated the opening of this banking hub These services are invaluable especially for our deeply rural and coastal communities ensuring their access to cash services is protected I’d like to thank Cash Access UK and our residents who played their part in securing access to these vital services.” North Yorkshire Council’s member for the Filey division "The opening of this hub is great news for residents and businesses who rely on cash and face-to-face banking services People will now have access to a range of specialist services offered by established banks through the hub I’m sure this will make a positive and significant difference in the town.” There are more details about NYC’s in-house internet provider whilst having to take on some of the costs The installation of ‘access points’ has been proposed at 14 locations across the town at a total cost of £36,000 which would be met by North Yorkshire Council North Yorkshire Council now say they will also cover the first year of operational costs after which Filey Town Council would be responsible for the maintenance of each access point which would amount to £2,380 a year or around £200 a month It comes after Town Councillors last month asked for more information on teh proposal after concerns were raised that the Town Council would be left with an ongoing monthly costs which it hadn't budgeted for “I am pleased that North Yorkshire has offered to pay first year costs of free Wi-Fi because I receive a poor signal on the front and many residents complain about signal whilst walking on the front.” Filey Town Council would also be responsible for access point replacement costs when they are required in around five years Free public Wi-Fi is currently available in 20 market towns across North Yorkshire via the authority’s provider NYnet Police are investigating a report of criminal damage to bus stop lewis.grainge@northyorkshire.police.uk The reference number for the incident is 12250117419 The proposal seeks to convert the residential property at 3 Rutland Street into seven one bed-flats and demolish the current garage to create a parking and amenity space The property currently has seven bedrooms and the applicant said that the plan to add a third storey is of an “appropriate scale and design” and will create “spacious flats” North Yorkshire Council’s housing standards team leader said he had “no objections to the proposals on housing grounds” and the Highways Authority also said it had no objections has received several objections from locals concerned about potential impacts “The addition of a third floor will transform the building and make it very overpowering towering over my property and the rest of the street.” “I agree that Filey needs more housing and I am not opposed to [it] being turned into flats I just feel that seven is excessive.” Filey Town Council’s planning committee has also lodged an objection to the scheme describing it as “an over development of the space available” “There is no provision for visitor parking and a shortage of on street parking for visitors in Rutland Street the access is insufficient and it will be difficult for vehicles to manoeuvre and demolishing the garage will have a detrimental impact on the neighbouring property.” plans submitted by the agent for the application state that the flats will provide opportunities for first-time buyers to purchase a property and “the design of the scheme further enhances natural surveillance” North Yorkshire Council has not set a date for deciding on the proposal which is currently pending consideration More than 14,000 more homes in Filey and Pickering can now access Virgin
