Manager Kevin Maher has led Southend United into the National League play-offs five years after they were relegated from the Football League
Southend United secured the final place in the National League play-offs with a dour goalless draw away at Gateshead
The north-east outfit had needed a win to snatch seventh spot from the Shrimpers
who were relegated from the Football League five years ago amid dire financial difficulties
The Heed had been in the play-off spots for virtually the entire season but lost FA Trophy-winning manager Rob Elliot to Crawley Town in October and had slumped to nine defeats in their previous 11 games going into the game
They knew a win would see them leapfrog back above Southend
but failed to test visiting goalkeeper Nick Hayes for the entire 90 minutes
as the Essex side set up a quarter-final at Rochdale on May 15
Oldham Athletic will be at home to Halifax Town in the other quarter-final
The Shrimpers timed their run to perfection
winning at Ebbsfleet and then at home to Wealdstone to move ahead of Gateshead with one game remaining
and they went closest to winning the game despite only needing a point
Only a fine reaction save from home keeper George Shelvey kept out a Ben Goodliffe header
but Gateshead's dreadful league form carried on into this fixture as they managed just one shot on target all game
a tame effort straight at Southend goalkeeper Nick Hayes
After being denied a place in the end-of-season shake-up by a 10-point deduction over their debts last year
Kevin Maher's team now have a chance to return to league status
If they overcome Rochdale next week they will face a trip to Forest Green Rovers in the semi-finals
Southend head coach Kevin Maher told BBC Radio Essex:
"It's been a tough time but I'm delighted we came and put on a good performance
We were comfortable enough but I was disappointed we didn't get one or two [goals]
"I'm just pleased for everyone because I think we deserve it
It's great we're in it and we'll enjoy this
but we know what we've got to do going forward
"Without [the fans] there probably wouldn't be a football club so they deserve days like this and they deserve success
but to give them something back is important."

Southend United secured our spot in the Vanarama National League Play-Offs following a 0-0 draw with Gateshead.
Backed by 1,755 travelling supporters, the Blues kept a clean sheet on the road to earn the point we needed to extend our season.
Kevin Maher named an unchanged team to the XI that started our 3-0 win over Wealdstone.
After Tom Hopper rolled his marker, his low cross across the six-yard box was nearly met by the sliding Charley Kendall who would have been able to tap into the net had he managed any meaningful contact on the ball.
Jack Bridge worked well to cut inside his marker and cross and the second ball landed kindly for Oli Coker to strike, but his shot flew off target.
When Keenan Appiah-Forson skipped around his marker, he cut the ball back into the path of Kendall 10 yards out from goal at the near post. The forward stretched out to try to divert the ball into the net, but his effort went narrowly wide.
Coker’s first corner from the righthand side landed on the head of Gus Scott-Morriss, but our top scorer couldn’t get over the ball and his header drifted over the bar.
Clever flicks from Scott-Morris and Coker down the right wing allowed the latter to deliver a superb cross that was met by the head of Goodliffe, however Shelvey produced an excellent reactive stop to deny the defender.
Hopper had the first effort of the second half when Appiah-Forson’s cutback fell into the striker’s path, but he couldn’t squeeze his shot past Shelvey at the near post.
A long goal kick from Nick Hayes was flicked on by Kendall into the path of Appiah-Forson, who tried to slide the ball towards the far side of the penalty area for Coker, but Ryan Bartley intercepted and cleared for a corner.
A deep free-kick from Coker wasn’t dealt with by the Heed, and Goodliffe was able to strike low and hard, but Shelvey got behind it. Scott-Morriss picked up the rebound and chipped the ball back across goal, but Kendall couldn’t get his head to the ball while under pressure from two defenders.
Heed had their first shot on target when Tyrelle Newton skipped past Bridge and let fly from 20 yards, but Hayes got behind the shot and held the ball at the first attempt.
A long clearance from Cav Miley found it’s way to Macauley Bonne, who drifted past his marker before attempting a squared ball to Josh Walker, but Shelvey was quick to pounce upon the ball.
Appiah-Forson’s deflected cross nearly sailed over Shelvey’s head and into the far corner, but the tense moments throughout the match all became worthwhile when the referee blew his whistle for full-time, securing our spot in the play-offs.
The draw cements our seventh-place finish and sets up a play-off quarter-final against Rochdale.

Gateshead were in the headlines after being barred from the play-offs despite a sixth-place finish
The Heed were unable to obtain a 10-year security of tenure for their stadium and subsequently failed to meet EFL requirements for new admissions
Rob Elliot’s team then lost key players Marcus Dinanga and Ed Francis over the summer
before the manager himself moved on to Crawley Town in October 2024
the Tynesiders have remained fighting in the top half of the table
A seven-match unbeaten run to begin the campaign instantly established the Heed’s credentials as a threat within the league
While there were a few blips along the way (including a 7-1 defeat to Dagenham & Redbridge and a 3-0 loss to AFC Fylde)
Elliot and then current boss Carl Magnay both kept Gateshead within the play-off places for much of the season
just two wins in the last 11 matches since the beginning of March left the door ajar for Southend
with Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Boston seeing the Tynesiders slip out of the top seven
Midfielder Luke Hannant has starred as Gateshead’s top scorer with 15 goals while also producing 10 assists
Jovan Malcolm has also enjoyed a productive campaign
finding the net nine times in 37 appearances
Gateshead have edged the five meetings between the two sides
picking up three wins in that period while the Blues have won just once
when the Heed ran out as 3-1 winners at the Gateshead International Stadium
and Conor Carty all found the net in the second half before Dan Mooney’s late consolation
in the return fixture a 17-year-old Henry Sandat scored his first goal for the Shrimpers in a 1-0 win at Roots Hall
The Blues salvaged a draw from the next trip to the North East
with Harry Cardwell cancelling out Stephen Wearne’s opening goal
but fell to a 1-0 defeat in Essex after Marcus Dinanga scored in the second half
Our most recent fixture came in September 2024
with the Tynesiders running out as 3-1 winners once more
Gus Scott-Morriss had levelled the game following Jacob Butterfield’s opener
but Luke Hannant and Ben Radcliffe both scored in the second period to ensure the Heed took all three points home with them
Speaking in his pre-match press conference
Blues head coach Kevin Maher said: “They’re a very good football team
Credit to them because they’ve had quite a few changes in manager but they’ve got their style of play that they stick by which is really good football to watch
"All we’ve done is given ourselves an opportunity
A few weeks ago it probably didn’t look like it
so well done for doing that – but we’ve done nothing
Nothing’s achieved yet and we’ve got to go and play a very good team on their own patch
They’ll be looking for the win of course
so we know we’ve got to perform.”
