South Ayrshire Council will expand a storm-damaged leisure centre to better serve as a community hub for Girvan
The Quay Zone was built in 2017 to designs by Norr but has been closed since January 2024 after its interior suffered extensive water ingress
Lawrence McPherson Associates will deliver this rear extension
which will sport large picture windows and an outdoor terrace on the upper level to provide unobstructed views towards Ailsa Craig
The practice stated: "When developing the design
a key aspiration was to capitalise on the scenic outlook toward Ailsa Craig - a missed opportunity in the original layout
"Drawing inspiration from the building’s existing projecting window on the south elevation
the extension will incorporate a similar projecting window on its upper floor
This design element reflects the colours of the sea and sky
creating a visually appealing contrast to the dark grey zinc cladding planned for the rest of the extension."
The existing building will also be reconfigured as part of the works to provide additional washrooms in anticipation of increased visitor numbers.
