Northern Ireland youth international Sam Glenfield has joined Waterford on a permanent deal
Highly-rated Northern Ireland Under-19 star Sam Glenfield has sealed a permanent move to League of Ireland side Waterford after an initial shining loan spell with the Blues
who spent the second-half of the 2024 season at the RSC after linking up on a temporary basis from English League Two outfit Fleetwood Town and shone as an all-action midfielder
will remain part of Keith Long’s panel for good after agreeing a multi-year deal
A product of Portadown’s ranks who made his Irish League debut for the Shamrock Park side aged just 15 in October 2020
Glenfield – who rose to prominence as a striker at first – earned a move across the water to Fleetwood in 2022 and made a handful of first-team appearances for the Fishermen prior to his switch to Waterford in July 2024
The gifted 19-year-old’s box-to-box style quickly made him a fans’ favourite and
after featuring 10 times and scoring twice as Waterford finished seventh place to survive their first season back in the Premier Division
he expressed his delight at committing his future to the Munster club on a longer-term basis
“I had a great time at Waterford in the summer and I’m happy to have signed a new contract,” Glenfield
who has seven Northern Ireland Under-19 caps to date
“I think we can continue where we left off last season
“The gaffer and his backroom team trusted me last year and I’m looking to repay them by hitting the ground running
and I’m looking forward to seeing them again and getting back out on the pitch with the lads.”
Manager Long was also glad to snap up Glenfield permanently
with eye-catching strikes in separate clashes versus Bohemians ranking at the top of his 2024 highlight reel
“We’re delighted to secure the permanent signing of Sam Glenfield,” he said
“Sam is a player who is an extremely important member of our squad – a player who we really only saw a snapshot of what he can really be last year
“Sam’s still just 19 years of age but is someone who has plenty to offer for us
and I’m looking forward to working with him next year.”

Waterford FC are delighted to announce the permanent signing of Sam Glenfield from Fleetwood Town FC on a multi-year deal.
Glenfield joined the Blues in July on this year on a loan deal for the remainder of the 2024 League of Ireland season

The stylish box-to-box midfielder caught the eye of the Blues supporters with his aggressive tackling along with his attacking threat on the ball.
The Blues number 19 made ten appearances for the Blues in his first stint with the club
netting two stunning strikes against Bohemians in two separate clashes.
Glenfield scored an 80th minute winner for the Blues in our trip to Dalymount Park last August
as the Blues came from 2-0 down at half-time to pick up an impressive three points in the capital.
Sam then netted our final goal of the season at the RSC as his 92nd minute equaliser against the same opposition at the end of October saw the Blues end their home campaign with a 1-1 draw.
Sam was delighted to turn his move into a permanent deal when he spoke to waterfordfc.ie

the world-renowned cardiology department at the center of a controversy over whether advanced nurse practitioners (ANPs) should be taking the lead in TAVI procedures has finally spoken up about its now-deleted tweet
although the hospital’s communications department has repeatedly told TCTMD that “senior leadership” is working on a response and wants “to have the most complete possible statement to do justice to such an important development.”
a story about a nursing colleague's role in a TAVI procedure was shared from this account
We are aware of and understand the concerns this has raised in the cardiology community
As reported by TCTMD last week, @GHCardiology posted a photo congratulating an ANP for performing a TAVI procedure as first operator—"Momentous day for Glenfield, UHL and the whole world”—then deleted the tweet. Screencaps went viral on #CardioTwitter, touched off a firestorm on Twitter and Reddit
and left professional cardiology societies scrambling to draft their reactions
Today, the Glenfield Cardiology account tweeted a three-part acknowledgement walking back their original congratulations and stipulating that their “nursing colleague” was not the lead operator: “Last week
We want to make clear that the lead operator for the procedure was a consultant structural interventionist
We regret the public scrutiny a dedicated colleague has faced as a result of our post
that SOP does not carve out a role for an ANP as an operator
It expressly specifies that all TAVI procedures involve “a lead cardiologist
one valve loader [although two is ‘preferred’]
and one electrophysiologist.” The SOP goes on to say that the second operator be “a consultant or appropriately trained specialist registrar,” both of which are terms that refer to physicians in the UK
John Steele is listed as a Registered Nurse (Adult) in the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) website
but no advanced degrees are listed in his NMC record (an ANP requires a master’s degree)
Asked for confirmation of the ANP’s credentials
the UHL communications manager has said he has passed along the question to senior management
Reactions to the controversy run the gamut from support for qualified ANPs learning new skills to accusations that senior leadership
are championing the training of nonphysicians at a time when junior doctors seeking structural training are being turned aside
The British Cardiovascular Society (BCS) and the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society (BCIS) both issued carefully worded statements to TCTMD last week that seemed to leave a door open for nonphysicians—with the right training—to take leadership roles in complex procedures
“The BCS supports all cardiovascular healthcare workers to deliver the best care to their patients
or clinical scientists,” the BCS statement read
“Cardiology has always been at the frontier of new models of healthcare delivery and new device therapies to ultimately improve patient symptoms and quality of life.”
stating: “ANP involvement in TAVI should be seen as complementary rather than competitive with trainees
As medicine has changed so there has increasingly been a role for advanced nurse practitioners to take on responsibilities that were previously considered to be the domain of doctors.”
Of note, however, BCIS issued a public statement today containing much of the same language provided to TCTMD
but with the addition of some sterner wording
including the reminder that TAVI procedures “carry a mortality” risk
The word “cardiologist” supplants the word “physician” as the person responsible for TAVI procedures
and there’s now mention of “various” complications that can arise during or after the interventions

Waterford FC are delighted to announce Sam Glenfield has joined the Blues on loan from Fleetwood Town FC for the remainder of the season
The box-to-box midfielder is another of the Cod Army’s most highly rated youngsters and arrives straight from international duty with Northern Ireland at the U19 European Championships this summer
Glenfield started out with Fleetwood’s U18 side
before progressing to her U21 side over the last 12 months
Scott Brown gave Glenfield his senior debut for the Cods in August 2022
coming on in the final minutes against Premier League side Everton where the Toffees defeated Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium by one-goal-to-nil in their EFL Cup second round clash
He made his EFL League One debut in November of 2022
where he came off the bench in a narrow defeat away to Oxford United
before making one further first-team appearance against now-Premier League side Ipswich Town in their final game of the season where the sides shared the points in a 2-2 draw
Sam has played underage international football for the Northern Ireland U16 & U18 sides
along with recently representing Northern Ireland in the U19 European Championship over the last ten days – where Northern Ireland were the host nation
Glenfield started their first group game against Ukraine & final game against Norway
while he was an unused substitute against Italy
as Northern Ireland picked up one point in their historic European Championship campaign
Now turning his attention to club football with the Blues for the remainder of 2024
Sam is excited at the prospect of playing for Waterford FC
“I’m absolutely buzzing – Waterford have been in great form this season
so I hope I can come in & hit the ground running and continue that good form for the rest of the season
I’m a midfielder with a load of energy who gives something in the final third of the pitch
along with getting stuck into battles & make plenty of passes – and hopefully get my name on the scoresheet too
I spoken to some of the lads over here that I know (Matt Lawlor & Barry Baggley) and I’ve only gotten great feedback from them
I know a few lads who played with the likes of Derry City and they’ve only said good things about the league!”
Waterford FC Head Coach Keith Long was delighted to welcome Sam to the Blues for the second-half of the season
“We’re delighted to have Sam join us for the remainder of the season – I’m looking forward to working with him
who can play & put his foot on the ball
He will bring plenty of energy to the squad.”
Sam will wear the number 19 with the Blues for the rest of the season. His home & away shirt sponsorship is now available to sponsor – contact commercial@waterfordfc.ie to find out more information
Sam Glenfield said Northern Ireland's Under-19s are buzzing for the upcoming European Championships
Fleetwood Town striker Sam Glenfield says Northern Ireland’s young players are lifting their own standards and he’s encouraged by Michael O’Neill’s faith in emerging talent
O’Neill has been working with a young squad in Spain this month as he looks to build another side that can qualify for a major tournament
The former Stoke City boss is not afraid to give players a taste of senior international football if he feels it can help their development
Players have made the step up from Tommy Wright’s Under-21s while Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles
the younger brother of Northern Ireland midfielder Shea
left Gareth McAuley’s Under-19s to join the senior panel for the first time ahead of the friendlies against Spain and Andorra
Liverpool’s 20-year-old hero Conor Bradley stole the show in Murcia with a brace against Andorra
McAuley’s young side drew twice with Slovakia — 2-2 at Seaview and 1-1 at Inver Park — as part of their preparations for the Under-19 Euros next month
The tournament will put a spotlight on the rising stars and Glenfield can sense a real hunger among the players to seize that opportunity
“Gareth (McAuley) is very much into the players pushing the standards so he leaves it to us and lets us set the standards daily
both on and off the pitch,” said the 19-year-old
gives us our own control around it and everyone is looking to impress
“It’s massive seeing the likes of Pierce Charles get a call-up
Michael (O’Neill) isn’t scared to throw young players in and you’ve seen that with the likes of Conor Bradley
"My friends at Fleetwood like CJ (Carl Johnston) and Stephen McMullan are up there regularly so it’s a great incentive to do well
“Tommy (Wright) comes down to watch training so they keep a close eye on you and they aren’t afraid to throw young players in if they are doing well.”
Glenfield joined Fleetwood in August 2022 from Portadown when the then League One side was managed by former Celtic and Scotland midfielder Scott Brown
former Scotland and Rangers midfielder Charlie Adam was named the first team coach in his first senior managerial role but Town suffered relegation to League Two
Glenfield made his senior Portadown debut against Coleraine in October 2020 at the age of 15 and went on to make 10 first team appearances
The European Under-19 Championship Finals are being hosted in Northern Ireland from July 15 to 28
“Everyone is excited and all of our friends and family will be there which gives us a good incentive to kick on and do well.”
“The spirits are great and everyone is raring to get going
We were saying the other week there’s only around 40 days to go so everyone is excited
we’re taking everything on board and looking forward to getting into the swing of things
“We’ve been given a great opportunity to have the tournament on home soil and to qualify right through to the finals
so everyone is excited and raring to get going
Give us anyone — we’ll take the game to them.”
Northern Ireland have been drawn in Group A with Italy
Sam Glenfield has been called-up to the Northern Ireland U21-side for their upcoming 2025 European Championship qualifiers against England & Ukraine this weekend
After an impressive start to life with the Blues since joining on loan from Fleetwood Town FC in July
Sam Glenfield has been rewarded with a late call-up to Tommy Wright’s 23-man squad for their upcoming European Championship qualifiers at home to both England & Ukraine
Glenfield has made six appearances for Keith Long’s side since his move
along with scoring a stunning strike to secure three points for the Blues away to Bohemians at Dalymount Park at the beginning of August
Sam joins Barry Baggley in the Northern Ireland U21-squad
after Barry was named in the initial squad before Sam received his late call-up

James Clarke of Bohemians celebrates his goal against Waterford at the Regional Sports Centre
Second-half substitute Sam Glenfield popped up with his second stunning finish of the season to give Waterford a deserved share of the spoils to deny Bohemians boss Alan Reynolds his first win over his hometown club Waterford FC in their SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division clash at the RSC
With former Bohs boss and Blues head coach Keith Long having the better of the previous three meetings
it looked as if his side were going to go down to a fine James Clarke header nine minutes from time
but for a second time this season against Bohs
The first half wasn’t anything to write home
and neither was the second for long periods
as the game had that end-of-season feel about it from early on
despite Kacper Radkowski forcing James Talbot into a fine save within two minutes
His low left-footed shot was turned out for a corner
Dayle Rooney sent in two teasing right-wing corner-kicks for the visitors that only needed a touch
but the Waterford defence stood firm before the best chance for the home side fell to Pádraig Amond on 38 minutes after Barry Baggley’s flag-kick
only for his volley to be cleared off the line
Long’s side were the busier in the attacking sense in the second half
with Connor Parsons setting the tone within seconds of the restart only for his angled effort from the left to flash inches wide of the target before a big chance fell the way of Christie Pattisson
who was a mere spectator for a lot of the game
made an excellent save to deny Adam McDonnell on 75 minutes
Dawson Devoy sent over a left-wing free-kick that found the head of James Clarke
and he powered a header to the near corner
But time ticked into the third minute of added time
Glenfield scored a brilliant equalising goal when the Fleetwood Town loanee let fly with a half-volley that flew past the helpless James Talbot
with the same player going close to winning seconds later only to be denied by a fingertip Talbot save
McCormack (McDonald 69); Pattisson (Flynn 69)

Auckland Council is urging the public to dispose of batteries properly as the number of rubbish fires increases
It comes after last week's devastating fire at the Abilities Group recycling plant on the city's North Shore
The plant in Glenfield caught fire last Thursday evening
burning to the ground and destroying essential equipment
The organisation provided employment and support to more than 100 disabled people
Fire and Emergency declined RNZ's request for an interview
and into the two firefighters that were briefly trapped after an aerial lift broke down during the fire were ongoing
Auckland Council general manager of waste solutions Justine Haves said each week there was a couple of smouldering fires at both the council's Waitakere Transfer Station
Haves said there had been 13 waste truck fires so far this year
"We believe [the cause] is the increasing number of lithium-ion batteries in our refuse and recycling material," she said
they're just so frequent in lots and lots of equipment
and unfortunately they're in our waste stream and when the refuse or the recycling gets compressed
if those batteries have a remaining charge then we end up with a fire risk."
Haves said they wanted to see better regulation for small battery disposal
"It's a big priority for us to try and improve and mitigate the health and safety concerns of fires occurring."
She said the council was doing testing on battery fires to understand how to manage the environmental impacts
"We'd also like to see better regulation for small battery disposal
and regulated product stewardship-schemes for e-waste that would apply right across the country
nothing is mandated or required so it's kind of an information approach without being able to
She encouraged people to dispose of small batteries properly
by taping them up and dropping them at appropriate sites
"It all helps taking them out of the waste stream."

The woman was located near a store inside the Glenfield Mall
A woman has been arrested after armed police swarmed a shopping centre in Auckland’s North Shore after a man was allegedly stabbed nearby
A police spokesperson said the incident occurred about 2pm on Glenfield Road, Glenfield, during an altercation between the woman and a person known to her.
Police said a man suffered a minor stab wound to his hand.
Inspector Mike Rickards said the alleged offender then fled the scene towards nearby Glenfield Mall.
“Our staff, who were armed as a precaution, responded and located the woman near a store inside the mall.”
The man would receive treatment for his injury and charges for the woman would follow in due course, Rickards said.
“I would like to reassure the public that there are no ongoing risks in relation to this incident, and the woman is in custody.”
Glenfield Mall had no comment on the matter.
The only high-reach ladder truck in Auckland broke down last night.

An Auckland recycling plant that burned down on the city’s North Shore last night is calling on donations from the public to support staff and replace essential equipment
The Abilities Group recycling plant in Glenfield caught fire yesterday evening
sending plumes of toxic smoke over the city
About 90 firefighters from across Auckland and from Hamilton responded to the fire
The Abilities Group said a fire investigator had been at the site on Friday
Managing director Peter Fraher was calling on the public to support recovery efforts
“Abilities is more than a workplace – it’s a supportive environment where disabled people find purpose
Fraher said the organisation provided employment and support to more than 100 disabled people
and was launching an urgent drive to raise funds
Donations would go towards supporting those staff affected by the fire
and replacing what was destroyed in the blaze
A Givealittle page has been set up for those wishing to donate.
Fraher said the support from the community had been overwhelming, and he thanked emergency responders for their work controlling the fire.
“We’ve had an incredible outpouring of kindness from the community already, and we’re so grateful.
“Now we’re asking anyone who’s ever believed in our mission – or simply wants to help us support our team as we rebuild – to support our fundraiser.”
Police say the road is closed with diversions in place
A cyclist is reportedly in critical condition after striking a stationary vehicle in Glenfield, Auckland
Emergency services are at the scene of the crash on Chivalry Rd
