Having defeated Dewsbury Rams on the road last week and local rivals Swinton Lions on Good Friday
Gary Thorton’s side were looking for another defining performance on home soil.
It took just four minutes for the Hornets to open the scoring
Emmerson Whittel made a line break through the middle to score next to the sticks
the Hornets continued to show their attacking credentials as Myles Harrop took advantage of another penalty to find the try line
Momentum continued to swing in the Hornets’ direction
with Tom Ashton on the receiving end of a string of passes following a scrum on Goole’s 10m line to add his name to the scoresheet.
in-form winger Forber got himself on the scoresheet after a Greg McNally bomb
the Hornets’ number five strolling over with ease to give the Hornets a 24-0 advantage at the break.
The Vikings came out with the bit between their teeth after half-time and it took them just a minute to get their first points of the game as powerful outside back Manoa Wacokecoke scored.
half-back Else got himself on the scoresheet
this time going from provider to scorer with a run on the inside to make it 34-6 after 53 minutes
and this time the ball was worked to the near side of the field for Deane Meadows to power his way over
despite the best efforts of the Vikings’ right-edge defence
Forber made sure of his hat-trick moments later
sprinting down the touchline to make it 44-6
He grabbed his fourth of the afternoon on the full-time hooter
with Morgan Punchard converting to bring up the half-centry for the Hornets

LONDON BRONCOS V GOOLE VIKINGS (by David Ballheimer)
London Broncos slumped out of the BetFred Challenge Cup at the second round stage
losing 17–10 at home to newcomers Goole Vikings
playing their first ever competitive match in professional rugby league
one entirely merited as Goole dominated most of the last 55 minutes
and whilst there are a large number of mitigating factors
the rugby league world won’t know or care about them
Only five of the Broncos appeared for the team last season
the latter a solitary Challenge Cup appearance at Warrington
though he was in numerous Super League 21-man squads
and a large number of 17 were making their first appearances at this level
It also didn’t help that London had not enjoyed the benefit of a friendly fixture
the one at North Wales being cancelled because of problems with the opponents’ home stadium
so this was a group of players who had not played together
none of that seemed to matter as the Broncos started brightly and they tested the resolve of the Goole defensive line
A couple of penalties helped to set up a good position and
scrum-half Connor O’Beirne made a diagonal run through a couple of tacklers before touching down
Goole coughed up the ball inside their own 10-metre line
Adebiyi charged through two defenders and was able to get the ball down and O’Beirne stretched the London lead to 10 points
A poor London last-tackle kick was caught by Jamie Shaull – a player with more Super League matches than the combined total of the entire Broncos 17 – in the in-goal area but his attempt to make a quick restart was stopped by Lovell’s tackle
earning the skipper a 10-minute sit-down in the sin-bin
once more failing to ground the ball over the try-line
and a pass out to unmarked winger Thomas Halliday going just in front of the winger before bouncing into touch
Instead of the boost of holding out with a man short
the Broncos started making mistakes in their handling
they remained sound and it looked like they might make it to half-time with their 10-point lead
Leighton Ball stepped into touch after gathering a Reece Dean kick just inside the field of play giving Goole six more tackles inside the Broncos 10
Dean’s long pass finding Halliday who was able to ground the ball before being bundled over the sideline
A magnificent kick from Dean left London with an advantage of just four points
The second half showed how important a try on the stroke of the hooter can be
Every Goole attack went deep into London territory and when the Broncos tried to make yards
they made handling errors and it was not until the 52nd minute
that they had a single play in Vikings territory
that Goole would level the scores and that moment arrived in 57th minute when Thomas Minns
a Harlequins player on loan from Leeds in 2014
took a pass from Josh Guzdek and made a break from inside his own 40
burst through an uneven defensive line and outsprinted the cover all the way to the try-line
The Goole defence did something that Super League teams struggled to do last season
stop a charging Lewis Bienik close to the line and they rolled him over onto his back
joined the players held up – the referee made the ruling half a dozen times in all
The Broncos were attacking down the right side
when Luke Polselli attempted a pass out towards the wing
The pass was intercepted by Mackenzie Harman
who ran all the way under the posts to make Dean’s conversion automatic
There was more than enough time for London to fight back and at least level the scores
A powerful run gave Goole the position to set up a drop goal and Dean sent the ball between the uprights to give the Vikings a two-score lead with less than five minutes remaining
They were never going to surrender that position

Goole station visitors are reminded that Network Rail’s subway pump replacement project will get under way next week
involves installing new equipment at both sides of Boothferry Road
While the changes will not completely resolve the flooding issue
they will allow a much improved response to incidents and vastly reduce disruption
said: “We’re aware that flooding at Goole subway has long been a concern for residents and rail passengers
“We recognise the importance of this issue and thank everyone who uses the subway or lives nearby for their patience and understanding while we carry out the improvements.”
One section at a time will be closed when work starts on Monday 17 February to maintain pedestrian access to the station and shops
Both platforms will remain open and accessible throughout
Motorists are reminded that temporary road lane closures will be in place on Boothferry Road to allow the improvements to take place
The project has a July target for completion and most of the work will take place on weekdays between 7am and 5pm
to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years
GOOLE VIKINGS gave Dean Roberts a debut in Sunday’s win at Newcastle Thunder after he recently joined the club
The 28-year-old forward started the season at Hunslet
making twelve appearances on loan from Featherstone
and has previously played for Doncaster and Hemel Stags
Goole added him to their squad ahead of the Easter weekend
Coach Scott Taylor said: “Jack and Dean bring vast experience of the game at this level and a toughness and physicality in the way they play
“Kye has been in really good form at KR in their Reserve side and is ready to test himself in first-team competition.”
Goole were without Thomas Minns and Misi Taulapapa through injury at the weekend
while Neil Tchamambe was unavailable due to commitments with parent club Wakefield
Veteran utility Taulapapa has a calf tear which will sideline him for the next couple of weeks
His absence was tempered by the return of former Sheffield and Dewsbury back Josh Guzdek
Daryl Powell has named a strong squad to face Goole Vikings in Saturday’s Betfred Challenge Cup game
The game will see the newly formed Vikings head to the DIY Kitchens Stadium for the Round 3 clash on Saturday 8th February
Having beaten London Broncos 17-10 in the previous round
Goole will be hoping to pull off another upset
Wakefield Trinity will open their competitive fixtures for 2025 with a close to full strength squad with just a few players rested following Powell’s confirmation of Cam Scott and Seth Nikotemo’s injuries
New signing Caius Faatili is included immediately and will potentially make his first appearance in a Trinity shirt just days after landing in the UK
Trinity fans could also be in line to see Tom Johnstone back in the Red
White and Blue after recovering from his offseason surgery
Thomas Doyle and Matty Russell are also included in the squad after coming through some offseason injuries
Tickets for the game are still available from the Trinity retail store and via our online ticket office.

An investment of £2.2m will help address the long-standing issue of flooding at Goole station subway
The project involves removing the pump and drainage system at the level crossing and installing new equipment at both sides of Boothferry Road
more practical access to allow Network Rail’s team to maintain the system in the event of flooding
Only one subway at a time will be closed to minimise disruption and ensure pedestrians can still access the station and nearby shops
Temporary road lane closures will be in place on Boothferry Road to allow the improvements to take place
with the partial closure of the station side subway on the north side of Boothferry Road
The project has a July target for completion
Most of the work will be carried on weekdays between 7am and 5pm
but some Saturday night shifts may be required towards the end of the project.
“We recognise the importance of this issue and
while this work will not completely resolve the problem
it will help alleviate the disruption caused by flooding
“We would like to thank all who use the subway or live nearby for their patience and understanding while we carry out the improvements.”
Residents who would like to ask our team questions about the project are welcome to a community drop-in event at The Courtyard on Boothferry Road from 3.30pm to 7pm on Wednesday 22 January
The work is part of a wider £60m investment on improving drainage across the rail network in Yorkshire and the North East

PHILIP SHERRATT attends the opening ceremony for Siemens Mobility’s new factory in East Yorkshire and sees how new Piccadilly Line trains are being built
Investment in transport in London benefits the whole of the UK
That was the overriding message on 3October at the opening event for Siemens Mobility’s new rail manufacturing facility at Goole in East Yorkshire
the site has been mobilising production of new 2024 stock trains for London Underground’s Piccadilly Line for several months now
but the event marked the first time the doors of the factory had been opened for this work to be inspected
Transport Secretary Louise Haigh and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan performed the official opening ceremony
Siemens’ journey to the opening of the factory at Goole has taken 10 years
having previously been Project Director for the establishment of new wind turbine manufacturing facilities in nearby Hull
Having failed to win the Elizabeth Line rolling stock contract
he says Siemens determined that to bid for contracts on a like-for-like basis it needed to build trains in the UK

'Rugby stopped me going off the rails'
you don't have to play the full version of the game to be part of it
fitness level or technical ability there is a version of rugby league that will suit you
meeting new people and maybe even progressing to a higher level
Hear from Goole's Brett Ferres as they prepare to play their first ever Betfred League One fixture this Sunday
Goole Vikings are gearing up for their first season in Betfred League One which gets underway this weekend
and their captain Brett Ferres is excited for the new challenge
An experienced Ferres has over 300 Super League appearances to his name
so is certainly the best equipped to lead the Vikings as they start their life in League One
“I’m looking forward to it and I’m really excited,” Ferres said
“We’re a completely brand-new team and we’re all looking forward to the challenge
We’ve got a really good group together
“I’m happy to be doing that [the captaincy]
who I can hopefully guide and help to progress
plus it takes a bit of pressure off Scott [Taylor] who runs some of behind-the-scenes things too.”
whom he won promotion to the Championship with in 2023
He is one of Goole's high-profile recruits along with the likes of Jamie Shaul
There has been a lot of attention surrounding newcomers Goole and their inclusion in the third tier
To add Goole in to League One is fantastic
but we’ve worked hard and had a great time together.”
And Goole have already impressed in 2025 so far
They learnt a lot about themselves in a pre-season friendly defeat against Featherstone Rovers
before going on to dramatically beat London Broncos in the Second Round of the Challenge Cup and North Wales Crusaders in the latest of the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup action
“We’re excited to see where we can go this year and there's the Super Eights competition at the end of the year to work towards
"Most League One teams will go into those with the pressure off as the Championship teams will be expecting to turn us all over
but we'll work hard in the season towards this and then go in with a free hit and see where we’re at and what the benchmark is
“I played in League One a few years ago and it’s a really tough competition
There are a lot of young players who have come from Super League clubs that can still make a name for themselves
who have dropped down for different reasons
“Most clubs are spending a lot more money now
Everyone wants to advance and try and push for promotion to the Championship."
With League One set for its biggest year yet
Ferres looked ahead to Round 1 this Sunday
where Goole Vikings will begin their campaign away at Midlands Hurricanes
“We’ve got a few long bus trips away
so plenty of travelling – but I’m looking forward to spending time with the lads
“Midlands have spent some money and have a great stadium
but we're ready to put our best foot forward and enjoy the ride
“The feeling never gets old for me and that’s why I’m still playing!"

Goole Vikings winger Ben Hodder made history on in Sunday as he became the club’s first-ever amateur player to step up and make his professional debut - completing a remarkable personal journey after a life threatening accident.
Hodder’s debut came in the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup clash against Betfred Championship side Barrow Raiders on Sunday
a game that saw the Vikings test themselves against a higher-tier side.
But for the local debutant who has played the last seven years in the Yorkshire Men’s League with the club’s amateur squad
this was more than a challenge - it was the culmination of years of hard work to achieve a special moment that may never have been.
"It was amazing to make my debut for a team where I’ve spent the last seven years playing," Hodder said
“It was a massive step up - physically and mentally
I’ve been pushed so hard by the coaches and my teammates
but they’ve all supported me through it
I thought I’d make a mistake when I agreed to step up and that I wasn’t going to be good enough
But everyone has been great with me and helped me along the way
who comes from the same Pocklington school year group as Ben McNamara (Leigh) and Marcus Walker (Wynnum Manly)
the path to this moment was anything but straightforward.
his rugby future was thrown into doubt after a near-fatal road accident that left him with a broken back
The impact sent him flying over twenty metres off the road
smashing through a fence before landing in a ditch
away from the roadside and where he couldn’t be seen
he dragged himself back into view to flag down help - after the driver had originally driven off believing they had hit a deer
where scans revealed a fracture in his back
wondering if his sporting aspirations were over
"I wasn’t sure if I was going to play again after that
it had the opposite effect—I actually had a lot less fear and started pushing myself even harder,” Hodder admitted
“I’ve loved my rugby more than ever since then
It made me so much more grateful because you never know what’s around the corner
That’s why I tell people—keep pushing and take your opportunities
and Hodder has not only returned to playing but has now made the leap into professional rugby
His relentless work ethic in pre-season didn’t go unnoticed by Vikings Head Coach Scott Taylor
who rewarded him with a well-earned call-up to the first-team squad
What made the occasion even more special was the presence of his family
who had supported him every step of the way
they were given the honour of presenting him with his debut jersey in an emotional moment that underlined just how far he had come
"It was great having my family there and showing how much they’ve supported me through this
“It was quite emotional being presented with my debut shirt
But what really meant a lot was so many friends making the effort to come down too—they’ve been with me on this journey
so it was brilliant to share it with them."
Hodder and his team mates are once again in action this Sunday
when Goole host Dewsbury Rams in Betfred League One

The Secretary of State for Transport Louise Haigh and the Mayor of London attended the grand opening of the Goole Train Manufacturing Facility
a significant milestone for Siemens Mobility and the future of rail transportation in the region
Siemens Mobility announced a substantial investment of up to £40 million in a state-of-the-art Bogie Assembly and Service Centre
further solidifying its commitment to the region.
The new Bogie Assembly and Service Centre will incorporate and expand Siemens Mobility’s current capabilities to overhaul bogies from UK trains
including the 3,224 strong fleet of vehicles (572 trains) it maintains in the UK
and will also include new production lines for assembling bogies for new trains
a first for Siemens in the UK.
This new investment will secure around 100 existing jobs and create up to a further 200
It is due to be operational towards the end of 2026. The investment in the new service centre in Goole
comes in addition to the previously announced £200 million investment in the Goole Rail Village including the Train Manufacturing Facility
This state-of-the-art facility will play a pivotal role in producing the next generation of trains for the UK
including the highly anticipated new Piccadilly line trains for Transport for London (TfL) that will transform rail travel across the capital
all of Siemens’ future UK train orders including Siemens Mobility’s new battery trains will be built at Goole
which is also gearing up to serving other global markets by 2030. Commenting on the investment
Transport Secretary Louise Haigh said:
“Its opening demonstrates the importance of high quality
long-term investment to pave the way for employment and growth.
“I know how vital rail manufacturing is to our economy
the cycle of boom-and-bust has held back this sector.
“That’s why I am determined to put an end to the stop-start approach to investment and provide the industry with the certainty it needs to deliver a railway that is fit for the future."
“This train manufacturing facility in Goole is a fantastic example of the expertise we don’t have and how investment in London benefits the whole country
will create up to 900 direct jobs and support another 1,700 in the supply chain
delivering great benefits to the wider UK economy
the whole country succeeds and vice versa.”
I’m excited to continue working together with the new Government to build a better
expressed his excitement about the opening and the investment's potential to nurture the next generation of trains in Britain
"After more than a decade of tremendous dedication and hard work
we have officially opened our state-of-the-art Rail Village in Goole which is testament to our commitment to the North of England
people and I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved together
We’ll assemble 80% of London's new Piccadilly line trains and all future Siemens trains for the UK including our Verve battery train here in Goole and I’m pleased that we are supporting the local supply chain in the process
London’s Transport Commissioner attending the event
said: "The opening of the Siemens Mobility factory in Goole marks a new stage in this transformational project
The new Piccadilly line trains that are being assembled in Goole will change the experience of millions of Tube customers every year
helping to drive growth and revitalise communities not only in the capital but across the country thanks to the supply chain
the Mayor of London and the Government to ensure that the benefits felt from this project will continue through funding for new Bakerloo line trains to replace the existing fleet
which at more than 50 years old is the oldest operating in daily passenger service anywhere in the UK
We look forward to welcoming the first new Piccadilly line test train to London later this year and for customers to start using them when they come into service from next year."
The establishment of the service centre marks another significant milestone in Siemens Mobility's dedication to building in Britain and reinforces its belief in Yorkshire's potential as a central hub for train manufacturing. The Goole Train Manufacturing Facility
is already a cornerstone of the local community and the wider rail industry
It will contribute to the economic growth of the North of England and bolster the UK's rail manufacturing capabilities. The Goole Rail Village consists of the Train Manufacturing Facility which assembles and commissions trains
the Components Facility where Siemens maintain gearboxes
traction motors and other parts for train and tram fleets
the Logistics Centre warehousing facility and the Rail Accelerator and Innovation Solutions hub for Enterprise (RaisE) business centre
all of which will now be joined by the Bogie Assembly and Service Centre.
Siemens Mobility's continued investment in the North reflects its commitment to supporting local communities
and driving the transformation of the transportation sector.

UK: The production of trains for the London Underground’s Piccadilly Line is ramping up at Siemens Mobility’s new factory in Goole
An increase in the proportion of work being undertaken in the UK means that 79 of the 94 nine-car sets will now be manufactured at the Goole Rail Village, with the remainder being produced at Siemens Mobility plant at Wien in Austria
Painted bodyshells are delivered to Goole from the Wien factory with windows and floors bonded in place
cable and equipment trays fitted at roof and underfloor levels and internal insulation material attached
At Goole the assembly is completed at a series of locations designated MOAB stations
before vehicles are taken to the Trucking Building for measuring and load testing to ensure they are level before attachment to the bogies
Siemens Mobility allows a tolerance of no more than 1 mm between opposite corners of each vehicle
Completed cars are moved around the site by electric vehicles which are guided by painted lines to ensure they present themselves in perfect alignment at each building
The articulated design of the Inspiro London units means that each set runs on just 10 bogies
with the shorter IM (Intermediate) vehicles suspended between DM (Driving Motor) vehicles at each end or KM (Key Motor Car) vehicles through the rest of the formation
which includes external doors and an equipment layout that enables improved headroom within vehicles
will increase capacity by 10% at current timetable frequencies and provide a smoother
The trains will consume 20% less energy than the existing fleet
The air-conditioning will be a first for deep-level tube trains
and real-time information systems will also improve the journey experience
The bogies are manufactured at Siemens’ Graz facility and are delivered complete with motors
The bespoke design features a notably short wheelbase to accommodate the London Underground’s tight curves
The challenges set for designers also resulted in the development of a combined motor housing and gearbox in a single casting
The axles can be slid out horizontally from the gearbox without needing to dismantle it to simplify maintenance work
The motors themselves represent the first use of permanent electromagnet motors by Siemens Mobility
Attachment to the DM and KM vehicles is via a central locating pin and a number of primary and secondary dampers
electrical testing is completed before assembly into a final nine-car set in the Train Formation Road
This process involves lifting the bogieless IM cars high enough to allow DM or KM cars to be moved into place on the tracks
then the suspended IMs are lowered into place and the articulation joints and anti-roll bars connected
Initially it will only be possible to power up the sets at Goole
with trains taken to either Wildenrath in Germany or the RIDC test track near Melton Mowbray in the UK for dynamic testing
a 1 km test track is to be constructed next year to allow short commissioning runs to be carried out on site
On the day of the formal opening on October 3
one KM and 11 shorter IM car bodies were on site in various stages of construction
including the first vehicle to be completed in the UK
which formed the backdrop for the ceremony
The delivery of bodies for the first DM cars is expected to begin during October
enabling the first complete UK set to be rolled out in early 2025
Production will ramp up through the year to a rate of approximately 27 cars or three completed nine-car trains each month
This will involve the facility moving to two shifts and is expected to be achieved towards the end of 2025
the Component Services facility employs around 80 people and has been expanded during its relocation from Leeds
This is now completing approximately 300 overhaul and repair tasks each month
both for Siemens Mobility and under contract to other manufacturers
The Logistics Centre is now the warehousing facility for all of Siemens Mobility’s depots in the north of England
The future Bogie Assembly & Service Centre to be operational in late 2026 will allow Siemens Mobility to assemble bogies in the UK for the first time
as well as overhauling those already in use
It is expected to create 200 additional jobs as well as securing 100 already in existence
UK: The previous government’s proposal for the possible conversion of London Underground lines to driverless operation will not be taken any further
Conversion to driverless operation is regularly suggested by politicians and commentators
UK: Siemens Mobility announced new investment of up to £40m and the creation of up to a further 300 jobs when Secretary of State for Transport Louise Haigh and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan attended the official opening of its £200m Goole Rail Village on October ..
UK: Siemens Mobility has revised its plans for the production of trainsets for London Underground’s Piccadilly Line so that up to 80% of the fleet will now be assembled in the UK
an increase from the 50% initially planned

Back-to-back Challenge Cup winner Jamie Shaul will hope to turn the clock back with Goole Vikings this season
as they take their first step on the road to Wembley on Saturday
Shaul is no stranger to Challenge Cup heroics having crossed for the winning try for Hull FC in their first ever win at Wembley in 2016
Having swapped the Black & White of Hull FC for the Black & Red of Goole Vikings
Shaul and his teammates will be hoping to pull off one of the shocks of the round by beating Betfred Championship’s London Broncos - a game which will be streamed live on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport
the Broncos were preparing for the new Super League season in rugby league’s top flight
whilst the Vikings were still merely an amateur team playing in the Yorkshire League - setting up for a very interesting tie this weekend
With history on his side and the prospect of a huge game to come
Shaul can’t wait to get started in the Vikings' first ever competitive match:
“The Challenge Cup is always special
and more so because it will be our first professional game as a team too,” he said
“It’s about taking things in our stride
which we showed in parts last week against Featherstone in difficult conditions.”
Shaul continued: “We’re in a tough spot in terms of the odds
but that’s what makes the Challenge Cup so unique
and we’re ready to prove that.”
and we’re looking forward to stepping up.”
The Vikings had a tough first outing against Featherstone Rovers in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday
a good test to understand what Championship opposition will throw at them
And despite some tricky conditions and having to weather some long defensive periods
Shaul believes there was plenty to take from the game heading into this week’s cup tie:
‘‘Featherstone has always been a tough place to go
even when I’ve played against them in the Challenge Cup matches and friendlies in the past whilst in Super League
but the lads did well considering it was our first hit out and we picked up some injuries
“They got stuck in and that’s all anyone can ask for
“If we graft for each other and stay resilient like the other day
The team’s spirit and determination are what will carry us through.”
The prize for a victory at the weekend for the Vikings is a big one
with a trip to big-spending Betfred Super League side Wakefield Trinity on offer in the Third Round
And the Vikings head coach Scott Taylor is also embracing the spirit of the Challenge Cup as he prepares his side for their first ever professional match this weekend
The Vikings head to the capital as the clear underdogs
but the magic of the cup means any result is possible
which is not lost on three-time Challenge Cup winner
“We know it is a huge task in front of us and we go into the game as the underdogs
but that is what is special about the Challenge Cup - anything can happen and we’ll give it everything we’ve got,” said the Vikings head coach
who lifted the trophy as a player with Wigan Warriors and Hull FC
I have been fortunate to win it three times as a player and they are some of the best memories of my playing career
“There is so much history and prestige in the cup and we are just really excited that we can be a part of that again as the Vikings and give the town a taste of what that is all about
He added: “The fact it is also our first competitive game together and we’ll be travelling down to London where the Cup final is held
gives it even more of a buzz feel for the boys and they have all had a spring in their step this week
so many people have worked very hard over the last few months to get us to this point.”

Tickets for this tie are also available from London Broncos’ official club website and on the day at the ground
