Staff at a community hospital are looking after too many patients and people who need care in a more acute setting
A letter outlining staff concerns also alleged it was impossible to maintain sufficient space between beds in the in-patient ward – West Ward – to maintain infection control
seen by the Local Democracy Reporting Service
claimed patients were largely those “with high acuity and no rehabilitation potential”
It claimed nurse and healthcare assistant staffing levels were not consistently met
that there was a heavy reliance on bank and agency staff
and that management was “defensive” when concerns were voiced
said bed numbers at the hospital had to “flex” during periods of high demand
It also said it was listening to staff concerns
The staff letter claimed there were up to 48 beds occupied at West Ward and that staff were regularly providing care that should be delivered in an acute hospital
It alleged a high incidence of patient falls
According to the letter the hospital main entrance was not manned between the afternoon and night
leading to visitors frequently arriving outside of designated visiting hours
Repeated calls for improved security measures such as an intercom
The letter said there was an ongoing appeal for Gorseinon Hospital to be reclassified as a sub-acute facility or an elderly medicine unit to ensure appropriate staffing levels
was a health hub with community clinics as well as hosting the in-patient ward where older people received reablement and step-down recovery care following admission to a main hospital
It said: “Bed numbers in Gorseinon like many of the other wards in the health board have to flex during periods of high demand
This is in order to meet the additional numbers of patients who require urgent care
particularly over the winter but also at other peak times of the year
As the requirement for the extra beds is variable there is an associated need to ensure a flexible staffing model across the health Board – this includes Gorseinon.”
The health board said staff rotas were planned well in advance and that every effort was made to bolster numbers when employees were off sick or for other unplanned reasons
It said the front desk at the main entrance operated Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm and that the in-patient ward had a receptionist from 7.30am to 3.30pm on those days
The health board added: “We are listening to staff concerns and are proactively seeking their views in a number of ways
We are committed to treating all staff fairly and urge colleagues to work with us as discussions continue.”
Welsh Government health inspectors carried out a remote quality check of West Ward in September 2020
It said the ward had 36 beds and that incoming patients had a higher level need than previously
The inspectors assessed various subject areas and only recommended one for improvement
namely that plans to train senior staff as clinical supervisors should be implemented as a priority

A church in Swansea, a football club in Denbighshire and volunteer centre in Powys are among the 38 projects to receive a share of more than £4.3million support from the Welsh Government.
The funding is being provided through the Community Facilities Programme, a capital grant scheme which helps voluntary sector organisations make improvements to community facilities such as sports clubs and community halls for the benefit of the people they serve.
Other projects which have also received funding include £300,000 toward the development of a Homeless Hub on Anglesey, £95,000 for refurbishment works at Denbigh Town Football Club, and £100,000 toward a new building in Caerphilly for Community Volunteers Wales.
Jane Hutt, the Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Social Justice said:
The Community Facilities Programme is important in helping organisations improve facilities so local people can benefit from them in their day to day lives.
I was pleased to recently visit Gorseinon to hear the exciting plans they have to create more community facilities within the Church space.
Each recipient of support from the programme provides a crucial service to the people they serve and it is great the Welsh Government is able to help them do even more.
Rev Dr Adrian Morgan, Vicar of St Catherine's in Gorseinon said:
The space is used by many community groups for a wide range of weekly activities, but the limited functionality of its internal design has constrained the community's use of the Hall. However, with Welsh Government support we are now going to transform this space so that it can house many more community group activity groups on an ongoing basis.
"I’m delighted that Government can see the benefit of centres like these to support community based intergenerational activities, reduce loneliness and isolation for both young and old alike, and help communities strengthen their sense of place and be a welcoming place for all.

Stringent infection control measures are in place at Gorseinon Hospital to manage an outbreak of Covid-19
24 staff and 25 patients have tested positive for the virus
Patients who have tested positive are being carefully managed by the nursing and medical staff with the support of specialist infection control nurses
although some are now recovering and returning to work
Families of patients who have tested positive have been informed
and although in-person visiting is currently restricted to end of life situations
virtual visiting is encouraged to keep people in touch
Whilst Gorseinon Hospital is closed to new admissions
outpatient services at the hospital are continuing as normal
These services have been reviewed to ensure maximum risk mitigation measures are in place and only critical face to face consultations are undertaken
The ward area is separate to the outpatient clinic and we would encourage patients who have appointments to continue to attend unless advised to the contrary
Gorseinon Hospital provides rehabilitation care for patients recovering from acute illnesses and helps to prepare them for discharge home or to their next place of care
“We are doing all we can to contain the spread of the virus and keep patients and staff safe
“As the virus is circulating so widely in the community at the moment we would ask everyone to closely follow the rules around regular handwashing or use of alcohol hand gel
keeping two metres apart and wearing face coverings.”
Covid-19 outbreaks remain under active management
although they are still having an operational impact. However
the planned cardiac activity that was suspended at the beginning of the outbreak has been resumed this week.

As well as keeping patients active and reducing their time spent on wards
gardening benefits them in terms of mental and physical stimulation
Julie Date is one of the patients who has participated in weeding and planting new bulbs
She said: “I love coming out to the garden and helping out
It’s a nice opportunity to get outside
“I have been keen on gardening in the past
I like to be outdoors rather than on a ward
so it’s an opportunity for me to be outside and enjoying everything that the garden possesses.”
The benefits of patients partaking in gardening also extend to staff
who have a dedicated undercover area – called the Cwtch – to take their lunch break
“It’s part of aiding their recovery in a different way too
while for our staff it gives them a chance to come away from a clinical setting and enjoy the garden themselves

“It also gives everyone involved a sense of achievement and pride in maintaining our garden as it’s there for all to enjoy.”
added: “The garden can be used to help our patients in staff in a number of ways
“It’s a great way to take the patient away from the ward and give them something stimulating to do
It’s important that if a patient is able to get up and go outside then they do it
because it can give them a big lift mentally
“We have a few keen gardeners amongst our patients
so they are delighted when the sun is shining and they have a chance to do some gardening

cake stands and china cups aren’t what you would usually expect to find in hospital – unless you’re in Gorseinon that is
Staff at the rehabilitation facility have opened a new tearoom on site for patients and their visitors
“Poppy’s” is based in the hospital’s light and airy conservatory room
guests at the tearoom can enjoy tea and cakes served from bone china cups and plates
which were donated by a staff member’s mother.
The large tables are laid with colourful tablecloths and napkins
and a selection of vintage tunes plays in the background as patients enjoy their café visit
said, “We’ve had real positive feedback already
and lots of comments about how people have enjoyed meeting others who are staying in different zones of the hospital
“Gorseinon Hospital is here for reablement
and part of that is emotional well-being so it’s a functional tea party too
“It reminds patients they can do things like pour a cup of tea for themselves and will be able to again at home
“We already use dining tables for people to have their meals on the wards
This takes it one step further so they can meet other people staying elsewhere in the hospital.”

“One lady said she felt like she was at home being here and a few others who met for the first time today have agreed to come back and meet again next week.”
It allows us to spend some quality time with the patients
and helps us see each other as people not just staff and patients.”
24 of the hospital’s 36 patients stopped by to enjoy the tearoom
including Jean Thomas and her husband Leonard
Very good food and it’s been really nice to see other patients and have a little variation to our time here.”

Gorseinon Hospital is using its newly-developed courtyard garden as a way of aiding patients’ recovery
Patients can enjoy nature and admire the bees
butterflies and flower beds following a transformation of the garden
but a new daily programme has also been set up to boost their recovery in a natural way
The seeds were sown for the redevelopment after the hospital came top in a nationwide vote to secure some of the £50,000 secured by Keep Wales Tidy’s Healthy Hospital Gardens initiative through the National Lottery People’s Project
An outdoor area used by Morriston Hospital’s burns and plastic surgery unit
along with Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda in Cwm Taf Morgannwg
The Gorseinon garden has already proved a budding success with raised beds
a covered seating area and wildflower turf among the new features
said the new-look garden offers many mental and physical benefits
She said: “I witnessed first-hand the dedication from the volunteers
local businesses and community - without their sheer determination and commitment to the project we would never have achieved this beautiful space for our patients and staff to enjoy
a daily programme has been created so patients can have input in the garden by planting
“This will give many patients confidence to realise their rehabilitation potential in a natural way
“Staff wellbeing is high on our agenda and the gazebo is there for staff to enjoy during their much needed breaks in a non-clinical area.”
The completion of the work is a dream come true for Christine Pettifer
She has spent 13 of her 26 years working in the NHS in Gorseinon
She’s in no doubt how beneficial the new-look courtyard will be to all concerned
PICTURE: A view of the garden before work commenced
She said: “For years this has been my vision
We were lucky enough to have won the lottery and I’m ecstatic with the end result
“It is a dream come true for me because the patients
“One of our patients told me she used to be in a gardener’s club
so she’s hoping to be in the courtyard garden every day for half an hour either doing some gardening or just taking in the view.”
Work on the courtyard started in February 2020 and was expected to be completed within a year
but the start of the covid pandemic stunted progress
community spirit and sheer goodwill has finally resulted in a project which will benefit the wellbeing of patients
has been involved in the project since its inception in 2018
this project has been something the community has got behind
“Once we were among the projects in the running for the funds
I spoke to staff in Gorseinon Hospital and elderly age groups in the area
They offered to take leaflets around the area for people to vote
“People were also voting at the hospital when they were having their blood tests
“We canvassed in Morriston Hospital too
It meant we had the most votes in Wales with just under 5,000
“Gorseinon is very lucky in that it has a real strong sense of community
We’ve had so many volunteers help out on top of the fantastic support we’ve kindly received from local businesses
“A lot of people that have been part of this were doing their day job and then putting in a shift in the garden on top of that
That gives you an idea of their commitment to making this courtyard a place to relax and enjoy.”
Relaxation and enjoyment form part of the benefits the courtyard brings in terms of wellbeing
Patients and staff can quickly switch from a clinical setting to embracing nature within a few footsteps
said: “We have transformed the courtyard to an area which will benefit the well-being of everyone involved.
“Biophilia is the recognition that humans benefit from interacting with outdoor space
“You don’t feel like you’re on hospital grounds when you’re sat on a bench in the courtyard looking at the beautiful garden
“Just having a place where you can sit
relax and rest your mind can’t be underestimated
“This garden epitomises what we are trying to achieve
which is providing inspiring spaces on our sites.
“We have a lot of space across our hospitals that are concrete parking spaces
Now we are looking at our spaces differently – we are trying to make the most of the environment we have got
and that doesn’t finish at the bricks and mortar
“It’s important that we build on successes like the courtyard in Gorseinon.”
The project bloomed thanks to Keep Wales Tidy’s Healthy Hospital Gardens initiative
attended the opening ceremony of the courtyard to see the full extent of the work
“We’re very proud in what we’ve been involved with in Gorseinon Hospital because it will make a difference to a lot of people,” she said
“It feels like you are part of nature in the courtyard
“It’s great for the patients but also for the staff
It’s a place to rest and refresh and to enjoy the flowers
“It won’t be onerous in terms of maintenance
That’s why we’ve gone with wildflower turf
“We’re looking forward to seeing how the garden flourishes.”
cut the ribbon to officially open the courtyard
She said: “I have had been humbled by all the support and help the health board has received
It stands as a beacon of what we can achieve when working together.”

and the club ambassador added: “It’s brilliant to see so many people interested in FIT Jacks and wanting to be involved in the programme
“It was great to have so many people who have completed the programme already in attendance
“There were also a lot of people here who haven’t been involved in the programme so clearly the word is spreading
“There are people who wouldn’t be able to regularly make it to the Swansea.com Stadium who would really benefit from the programme
so it’s brilliant to be able to spread it out and deliver it to a wider audience.”
If you want to get involved and embark on your own journey through FIT Jacks
