cycling and bus routes on a busy high street have been set out
As part of the next phase of improvements for Gosforth High Street
these plans aim to improve road safety, create better public transport links and encourage walking and cycling
Key proposals include some extensions to the north bound bus route on Great North Road
along with a package of active travel improvements such as upgraded cycle routes to and alongside the High Street
and a wider footway for people walking on Gosforth High Street. Cllr Juna Sathian
cabinet member for climate and transport at Newcastle City Council said: “We’re now ready to unveil the next phase of improvements for Gosforth High Street and we invite feedback from local people to help shape the final designs
The team has been looking at different options for the High Street
which is part of one of the busiest routes for buses in the city
and how we can improve walking and cycling in the wider Gosforth area
we’ve developed a set of measures that improve cycling connections
and make the area safer – particularly for the many school children who travel in this area daily.
“These proposals build on our ambitions to create a more sustainable city.”
The package builds on the bus priority measures made permanent last September and support the wider plans for the bus corridor improvements to the Great North Road
supporting more reliable bus services along one of Newcastle’s busiest routes
Residents are encouraged to provide feedback on the proposals at:
People can also discuss the proposals with the team at the following drop-in sessions:
Wednesday 2 April – 3 till 6pm – in Trinity Church
Monday 7 April – 5 till 8pm – in Café 1901
These improvements are funded by the UK Government

Bus priority measures which were trialled on Gosforth High Street will be made permanent
the north bound bus lane has been almost continuously extended from Blue House roundabout in the south to the Church Road/Salters Road junction in the north
as part of a scheme to improve public transport on a key bus corridor in the city
Newcastle City Council has reviewed the data collected
as well as feedback from the public as part of the decision-making process on this first phase of improvements to Gosforth High Street
Journey time data collected by Stagecoach shows that their bus services have seen improvements
with increased reliability on this key bus corridor
data has shown that the bus lane has had a minimal impact on other journeys
A common theme of the feedback from the people taking part in the consultation centred around a perceived lack of active travel as part of the scheme
The council is keen to stress that improvements to walking and cycling are part of the next phase of improvements to Gosforth High Street
Plans are being developed which will include public engagement events to help shape improved walking and cycling routes to the High Street
cabinet member for a Sustainable City at Newcastle City Council said: “As we have set out
creating better public transport links and encouraging active travel around the Gosforth High Street area
I would like to thank everyone who took part in the public consultation on this first phase of improvements
focusing on prioritising public transport on one of the busiest routes for buses in the city
“We’ve looked at the data and the feedback from the public and we know that the scheme works well
with bus passengers seeing improvements in their journey times and bus reliability which is exactly the change we need to encourage people out of their cars and onto public transport
“This is only the first phase of the plans for this area, we will be looking at further improvements
which we know people are keen to see and which will further support people in being able to make sustainable choices on how they move around the city
“We will be inviting local people to help shape the next phase of improvements.”

Gosforth Civic Theatre in Newcastle is among them (visit the IVW website for the full list) and has programmed a gig with Holly and the Reivers tonight (Jan 31) as part of its involvement.
Classified as ‘a class act from start to finish' by folk luminary Nancy Kerr, the band: Holly Clarke (vocals, guitar), Merle Harbron (vocals, fiddle) and Bertie Armstrong (vocals, banjo) met on the Folk Degree course at Newcastle University.
“I had been offered a support slot supporting the Rachel Hamer Band and I said to Bert and Merle 'Fancy doing this gig with me?' and the rest is history,” says Holly, who was happy to share the influences which have shaped their sound.
“Our biggest influences are Lankum and Furrow Collective, two bands who essentially centre everything around singing together and telling really good stories,” she says.
“Using voices, banjo, fiddle and guitar we like to create deeply emotional and almost filmic sounding music, music that helps to tell the story and create an atmosphere.”
It’s an atmosphere which very much leans towards the darker side.
Expanding on their ‘folk-horror trio’ Instagram bio, Holly says: “Folk Horror films utilise a lot of folk music and customs that help to tell the story, and are used in a way to help build a sense of dread in the audience.
“We love the darker more supernatural, folklore based songs that can often have really deep metaphors, or even deep political messages. And like Folk Horror, we like to face the darker parts of humanities past delve into the older songs and really present to our audience the Folklore and stories of our island.”
While each of the band has their own projects in the offing - Holly and Bert are recording solo albums while Merle has started a duo with local fiddle player, Sam Baxter, there is a future band project in the early and “very exciting” stages.
there’s the Gosforth Civic gig to look forward to - and Holly is quick to stress the importance of supporting independent venues
“We have essentially gigged mostly in independent venues
and they are incredibly important to the grassroots music scene
The future as we speak is really uncertain
and really we don't trust the people in power to help with this situation
“The music industry is in a dire situation
But I think all we can do right now is to support each other and support places like Gosforth Civic Theatre
There’s still time to grab a ticket for tonight’s performance from the website.

A fire crew is still on the scene after a massive blaze in a West Cumbrian village
10 fire engines were called to the blaze on Main Street

Crews scaled back the response at around 5.15pm and monitored the site overnight
It is hoped the road will be reopened later on today
Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: “There is a multi-agency inspection this afternoon
after which the building will be secured and it is hoped that Cumberland Council can reopen the road once this has been completed.”
The fire service has thanked its teams for their work and the community for their support during the incident
It said: “We’d like to publicly thank all our teams who have worked incredibly hard over the past 24 hours-plus in response to the extremely challenging building fire on Gosforth Main Street

I would like to thank all those who responded and worked to contain and tackle the fire
“I would also like to thank the local community who supported Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service with welfare provisions
and the employers and families of our on-call crews who were engaged in this incident for a number of hours.”
it was reported that people were still in the building
all people were accounted for and were safe and well outside
“Due to the intense fire spread during the incident which eventually burnt through into the rear properties causing roof collapses
appliances from around the county were mobilised to the incident.”
An online fundraiser was launched for the two families affected by the fire
It had a £10,000 target and within hours had raised thousands of pounds
