Christine Akhuetie is loving a life of independence after buying her own one-bedroom apartment just an hour from central London
The 29-year-old legal project management analyst has left home in South Norwood after purchasing an apartment at Bellway London’s Crossways Quarter development in Greenhithe
Christine decided in spring 2024 that the time was right for her to finally leave home and buy her own property
“I had been saving seriously for a few years and worked out that I had enough money for a deposit
so I started to look for somewhere to buy,” said Christine
“My priorities were that it had to be within an hour commute of central London
and within an hour’s drive from my mum’s house
“I knew a one-bedroom apartment best suited my budget for a new-build home but I wanted it to have allocated parking
not be on the ground floor and to have a balcony.”
where she spotted details about Crossways Quarter
and made an appointment to go over and look at a two-bedroom show apartment
I went along and loved the look and feel of the apartment
She told me that Bellway London would give me a contribution towards my deposit which was great news
I reserved the apartment with my 10 per cent deposit but the additional boost gave me more equity in the property and brought my monthly mortgage payments down.”
Christine moved into her new apartment in October 2024
“I really appreciate the fact that there is a key fob entrance to my apartment block which gives me peace of mind and I am on the second floor which also increases my sense of security,” she said
“Although I don’t use my car to get to work
I have an allocated parking space in a car park which is secure and gated off
including to make the five-minute drive to Asda for my weekly shop
to pop over to the nearby Bluewater Shopping Centre or Lakeside Retail Park and to make the 15-minute journey to the gym
The car also gives me the freedom to catch up with my friends around London and see my mum in South Norwood
“Stone Crossing railway station is a five-minute walk from my apartment and from there I can catch a train to Abbey Wood then change to get to Liverpool Street
It’s great because I can get my front door to the office in an hour.”
“The bedroom is big enough for me to put a desk and a chair in one corner as my working from home zone,” she said
“It is good because I don’t have to keep setting up in different places as this is the dedicated workspace and that is that
“The layout of the apartment really works for me
I love the open-plan configuration as it really gives a feeling of space
and the light that comes in through the big windows complements that
It is lovely to have a generous-sized balcony where I will spend a lot of time where the weather is warmer
“My favourite space in the apartment has to be the bathroom
mirrored cabinet that came as standard with the apartment
the lavish waterfall shower head over the bath and the stylish tiles
The room is such a luxurious and relaxing space
I’ve been enjoying lighting scented candles and indulging in relaxing hot baths.”
Christine is enjoying the freedom that living alone brings
“I love my mum but it was high time I moved out,” she said
“Mum has been over to see the apartment and she loves it and is happy that she knows I am safe here
I am still getting used to having all this place to myself
It is incredibly liberating to have somewhere to call my own.”

Tributes have been paid to Swanscombe and Greenhithe Councillor Peter Harman
At the full meeting of Kent County Council (KCC)
colleagues said they had been left shocked and deeply saddened by the news
a community champion and someone who always made sure you had a lift home
After a distinguished 35-year career in the fire service
he committed his time and energies to representing his community at town
He was in his third term at KCC as an independent councillor
and also brought his knowledge and experience to the work of the Kent and Medway Fire and Rescue Authority
Warm tributes came from across the Council Chamber and the political divide
The Green Party’s Cllr Mark Hood said: “His lifelong commitment to public safety and service was clear in everything he did
His legacy of service and kindness will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of working alongside him.”
The Liberal Democrats’ Ian Chittenden
speaking for himself and colleague Mike Sole
said: “It was clear he cared passionately for Swanscombe and Greenhithe and those who lived there
a gentleman and a true community champion who will be missed by those he represented.”
Labour’s Cllr Kelly Grehan said: “Peter was a very kind and thoughtful man
My overwhelming memory is that he would always make sure everybody had a lift home
he didn’t care what party you were or what arguments you had had that day
he wanted to make sure that you would get home safely
“It’s a shame he won’t be here for when we finally fix Galley Hill Road (closed in Swanscombe after a landslide) as I don’t think I saw him at all in the last year where he didn’t mention Galley Hill
Leader of KCC Roger Gough said: “He was fair-minded and realistic
No where was this seen more clearly than with the issue already mentioned
He tirelessly and rightly pressed us and government for action but he never in that process scored cheap points
He was an absolutely relentless champion of his community
He was someone who brought something very special to this council and this chamber.”
said: “Peter wasn’t interested in the major parties nor being tribal in that way
He said it could get awkward and that he would get criticised by one side and lambasted by the other but that he always remembered he was a local representative of people who care as little about the parties as he did
He was right of course and slept easy at night
“He won’t be looking down on our tributes today, he’ll be looking down on the visit by the Minister of the Future of Roads to Galley Hill.”
Cllr Harman served on the Corporate Parenting Panel
the Planning Applications Committee and the Health Reform and Public Health Cabinet Committee
The meeting heard about Mr Harman’s dedication to his wife Jo
two daughters and two granddaughters and about his love of travel and the fact he had visited more than 150 countries
Further personal tributes were made at the meeting to Peter Morgan
The retired teacher and former mayor of Swale served as Chairman of the council in 1996. A formal motion of condolence was agreed by Council and a minute’s silence was observed for both Peter Harman and Peter Morgan
