with the games being played at Greenisland FC’s ground in County Antrim and at the nearby Ulster University Jordanstown campus
The tournament is for U15 schoolgirls’ teams
although the respective squads usually feature several players involved in national development set-ups
Northern Ireland applied some good early pressure down the flanks
with Annabelle Shaw and Charley McMullan fashioning decent chances
England had a shot from distance which was gathered in by Northern Ireland keeper Anna Roberts
On 24 minutes McMullan tested England keeper Daisy Sherrin with a fine strike from the edge of the area
while six minutes later Roberts saved well at the feet of an England attacker
In the 35th minute McMullan dribbled past two players down the left flank before cutting inside and firing in a shot which Sherrin did well to keep out
Half-time: Northern Ireland WU15s 0-0 England WU15s
After the break a dangerous corner from McMullan was met by Grace Guest who shot just wide
England’s Eleanor Corbett let fly from distance
On 60 minutes Northern Ireland substitute Abi Curley dribbled past a couple of defenders before slipping the ball to fellow sub Annarose Robinson
England piled on the pressure towards the end
Sara Deveny and Caitlin Shields making good clearances
Full-time: Northern Ireland WU15s 0-0 England WU15s

A firefighter tackling the blaze at Greenisland Church of Ireland

Brett CampbellSun 8 Sep 2024 at 21:32Three young boys have been charged in connection with a fire that destroyed a church in Co Antrim last week causing an estimated £2.5m of damage
The Greenisland church’s leader has said it “believes that forgiveness and love is the way forward”
Two of the suspects are aged 11 and the other is 10 years old
All three are due to appear at Belfast Youth Court on Monday
Firefighters attend major blaze at Greenisland Church
"As is normal procedure all charges are reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service,” a PSNI spokesperson said
The incident is not being treating as a racially motivated hate crime
The minister of the The Church of the Holy Name
which was gutted in the blaze last Sunday evening
told the heartbroken congregation to “love the children” who are accused of arson
Nine fire-fighting appliances and 49 firefighters attended the scene of the blaze
Photographs showed substantial damage to its hall
where a section of the roof was destroyed in the fire which began around 9pm
An online fundraiser set up by Rev Isobel Hawthorne-Steele’s niece to pay for the repair work has now reached almost £20,000 – more than three times the initial goal
"We’ve been overwhelmed by the love and support of the community after the devastating fire at the Church of the Holy Name (Church of Ireland) in Greenisland,” the church said on the GoFundMe appeal page
“Many of you have asked for a way to support us as we seek to rebuild
and one of the suggestions was a GoFundMe page
"We would really appreciate the support if you would like to contribute
a total of 468 generous donors had heeded the call and given £19,230
Worship went ahead earlier in the day at Greenisland Methodist Church
directly opposite the destroyed building where parishioners normally congregate
The service was streamed online and showed families enjoying the service which began at 9.30am
Prayers of thanksgiving were said during the service despite the “devastation
tears and sorrow” experienced over the past week
Rev Hawthorne-Steele took questions from church members and was explicitly asked what her message to those behind the fire was
"What I would say to them is that Jesus still loves you,” she said
"I want them to know that we love them and are with them
"If anyone is seeking retribution them or their families then I want to speak to those people – we as a church need to love those children
"In the eyes of Jesus we are all sinners.”
The clergywoman told members that the church itself will need to be completely demolished as a result of the damage which has made the building “very unstable”
"The church will be fenced off by the council,” Rev Steele said
only if the surrounding walls don’t give way
Most of the furnishings have been destroyed including equipment such as the church organ and piano
Only three vases and a few stands were salvaged
Rev Hawthorne-Steele said it is now too dangerous to go near the building to see what else can be saved
as she explained that anything that had survived the blaze was likely ruined by smoke or water
All the stock from the church shop’s 464 item product lines has also been destroyed
"Two-and-a-half million pounds we have lost [in total],” the minister said
The congregation was told that services will continue at the Methodist church until their harvest gathering on October 13
Future plans are still being discussed as offers “from a lot of places including schools” to use premises flood in
It is hoped a contractor can be found by Easter which will pave the way for the rebuilding project
The “optimistic view” is that the main church could be operational within 18 months
however the church hall will take a year longer to finish
Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph on Sunday evening
Rev Hawthorne-Steele said she has been inundated with calls and messages from those who attend the church
"The whole congregation fully supports what I said and believes that forgiveness and love is the way forward,” she added
The minister said the hefty bill is an estimate only as she awaits an official assessment by insurers

2024 at 6:00am BSTThe minister at a Co Antrim church gutted by an arson on Sunday has said she does not believe that racism was behind the attack
Greenisland Church of Ireland had been celebrating their 70th anniversary last week before the fire
with events including a multi-cultural street party on Saturday alongside members of a charity that supports migrants
refugees and asylum seekers in the north Belfast area
Rev’d Dr Isobel Hawthorne-Steele said that despite last month’s rioting and surge in racist attacks in Belfast
she did not think the street party was a factor in why the church was targeted
we think there may be CCTV footage but we’re not sure,” she said
The community has not reared its head with any racist or anti-immigration sentiment
We’ve had some of the global majority joining our activities on a normal basis such as parents and toddler groups
I’m just praying that whoever did this will give themselves to the PSNI
not only from a legal perspective but also within their community
“It’s a life changer for them and we want to be there for them.”
The church is one of four on the Station Road
normally a quiet area beside a housing estate and train station
services for the parishioners will be hosted by the Baptist and Methodist churches while others have offered the use of their buildings
By Tuesday, a fundraiser for the church had also raised nearly £6,000 towards any future repairs.
A message from Isy and an invitation - join us over lunchtime ON MONDAY at the Mango Tree Cafe in Greenisland Baptist Church from 12noon as we support each other and grieve together
Rev Hawthorne-Steele first attended the church as a girl over 60 years ago, maintaining ties until she returned four years ago to serve as minister.
“It’s like a death. You go through the shock, now we’re just going through the reality and the grieving,” she said.
“We’re weeping over our church, but we do see that hope, that light that says our church was not a building, it’s a people.
“Everybody in the community has said ‘that’s our church.’ Even people who don’t normally go, they’ll have had baptisms or marked the loss of their loved ones.
“That’s my own family too, I have so many memories and can grieve with them.
“The sadness is palpable, but the people rallying around and hugging me in the street to say ‘we’ll support this, this is our church.’ That’s lovely.”
A police spokesperson said that efforts were continuing to establish a motive behind the arson attack and identify those responsible.
Anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the area or may have relevant CCTV, doorbell or other footage is asked to call police on 101, quoting reference 1437 of September 1.
Information can also be passed on anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A boy and a girl are to quizzed by police about a fire at a new house under construction in Co Antrim which is being treated as arson
Fire crews attended the blaze at the three-storey property in the Hartley Hall housing development in Greenisland on Saturday shortly before 4pm
which is understood to have been close to completion
A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service told The Irish News that they are treating the incident as a “deliberate ignition”
He said the report of the blaze at the “three-storey house under construction” was received at 3.51pm with fire crews from numerous stations including Greenisland
It comes amid reports of a number of incidents of anti-social behaviour in the area in recent days involving young children.
One report suggested that children were seen in the area on Friday night throwing rocks at a nearby property.
A man living in the area told The Irish News: “These kids who are being caught up in this sort of thing need to realise that they could be ruining their own lives.”
He added: “This fire could have spread to nearby properties where there are young families living.
“A new playpark is being built across the road from this house, if it had of been opened, kids could have been playing there.”
The fire comes a month after substantial damage was caused when a blaze broke out at a church in Greenisland.
Three young boys, two aged 11 and a 10-year-old, were initially charged with arson over the fire that swept through The Church of the Holy Name on September 1.
Criminal proceedings were ended before the boys were set to make their first court appearances.
They will instead be dealt with through a youth diversionary programme aimed at achieving a restorative outcome.
The PSNI said its officers attended the scene on Saturday.
“Fortunately, there were no reports of any injuries,” a spokesman said.
“A young boy and a young girl were arrested on suspicion of arson. They are due to return for interview at a later date, and enquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances of the incident.”
Police added that officers had received a report of criminal damage caused to a property in the same area on October 11.
It was reported that damage had been caused to the side door of the property, and that rubble and bricks had been located in the garden.

Kurtis ReidTue 3 Sep 2024 at 08:16A little box of memories was all that remained in the ashes of a Co Antrim parish church that went up in flames on Sunday night
The blaze at the Church of the Holy Name in Greenisland may have been caused by a bin being set alight and came just hours after the Church of Ireland congregation celebrated its 70th anniversary
firefighters returned to the scene after neighbours spotted puffs of smoke coming from the wreckage
the church said: “Folks you won’t quite believe this
“Our neighbours noticed some puffs of smoke this evening and the NIFRS are back as there is still some concern that the fire hasn’t completely died out.”
It’s understood there had been a small amount of smoke
The leader of the church yesterday vowed that the community will rebuild it from the ashes
nine fire-fighting appliances and 49 firefighters attended the Church of the Holy Name in the Station Road area
Photographs of the scene show substantial damage to its hall
where a section of the roof was destroyed in the blaze which began around 9pm
As the earlier party celebrating the church’s 70th anniversary had been also attended by people from an ethnic minority or foreign national background
there were initial suspicions that the arson could have been a race-related incident
police said there was no suggestion of anything hate-related
Despite the destruction caused by the flames
there was a “small miracle”: a beloved box of keepsakes was found intact despite being in the midst of the blaze
the Greenisland church said: “The miracle continues
Some of our most precious memories and photos were in a box under a table for safe-keeping
but some of the most irreplaceable items have been rescued
So incredibly grateful to the fire crews — and to the waterproof wonders of plastic boxes and poly pockets.”
who has been at the helm of the church for the past three years
said it was like watching her own home go up in smoke
It’s hard to believe someone did this deliberately
as it could have been something gone wrong,” she said
“We have been told it was a bin set on fire that caused it
“But we just have to wait for more information
and we would appeal to anyone with information
What they have said is that they want to help — and that is everyone across it
“We will rebuild from these ashes with a lot of hope

"We are devastated" - Greenisland Church gutted in overnight blaze
said he was “at a loss to understand why a church that is such an integral part of the community
that the Church of the Holy Name is not a burnt building
“It is a vibrant group of people who love their God and love the community He has given them to serve
but they are also strong and courageous and they will continue to worship together and reach out to others with Christ’s message of forgiveness and hope.”
who live just yards from the parish grounds
also described their sadness over the blaze
the fact that it was arson is heartbreaking,” Janice said
“But this church is about community — we know it well and it will bring people together.”
Ron added: “We were here on Sunday for the thanksgiving service
which was all about looking forward to the future
The international people who came along provided food
East Antrim Alliance MLA Stewart Dickson said it was upsetting to hear that arson was suspected
“We have to see where the investigation goes
I do understand it was a bin set on fire at the back of the building
“As far as the community and parish is concerned
they will be working hard to build back better
This church has been here for 70 years this week and it will be here for 70 years more.”
Mr Dickson also hit out at “nasty speculation” that the church was targeted in a race-hate incident
Anyone who believes these things is completely wrong
“It’s a terribly sad suggestion that something like that could happen in Greenisland,” he said

Church leaders have spoke of their heartbreak following the incident, which is being treated as arson.
Substantial damage was caused to the Greenisland Church of Ireland building on Sunday at around 9.10pm.
Nine fire appliances and 49 firefighters attended the scene on Station Road with footage indicating the fire had caused major damage to a church hall.
The blaze happened shortly after the church had hosted a special event earlier in the day to celebrate its 70th anniversary.
Bishop of Connor, Rev George Davison, was among the guests at the special anniversary service, as well as former rectors of the parish and the Archbishop of Armagh, the Most Rev John McDowell, who preached.
In a post on Facebook, Bishop Davison described the fire as “heart-breaking” and recalled how that community had spent a “joyful afternoon celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Church of the Holy Name” but they had returned later to see a “terrible fire on the premises”.
“It was heart-breaking to watch and to stand with so many parishioners who couldn’t quite believe what we were witnessing,” he said.
“I’m so thankful that no-one was hurt and very grateful to the members of the Fire Service and the PSNI for all their efforts this evening.”
In an online video message on Monday, the Rev Dr Isy Hawthorne-Steele said: “I am just absolutely gutted that this has happened, but we will rise out of this.
“The Bishop said to me last night, out of ashes – we will come through this together as a church because we are church people – we have faith and we have hope.
In a statement posted on Greenisland Parish Church’s social media page, a spokesperson said they were “heartbroken” by the fire.
“What a shocking and terrible night for our parish and the whole Greenisland community,” the statement said.
“As I write, the smoke is still rising and the fire crews are still working hard, but the worst of the blaze seems to be under control.
A message from Isy and an invitation - join us over lunchtime at the Mango Tree Cafe in Greenisland Baptist Church from 12noon as we support each other and grieve together
“We have been overwhelmed by the support and love of the Greenisland community - people who helped us out with everything from traffic control, available toilets (much needed!) and of course a cuppa to steady the nerves.
“We are heartbroken but also so thankful - to the fire crews, to the local community, to our neighbours who sounded the alarm, and so thankful that no-one was hurt.
“We have just spent the weekend giving thanks for the first 70 years of Greenisland Parish life.
“We have every faith that with God’s guidance, the strength of our parish family and the support of our amazing friends and neighbours, our story will go on.”
The church also said on a Monday that there had been a “bit of a miracle” after fire crews rescued some photographs and heirlooms from its memories exhibition as part of the anniversary celebrations.
In a statement on Monday, police appealed for information as they confirmed it was being treated as arson.
“Thankfully no one was injured, however a significant amount of damage was caused,” the PSNI said.
The fire service said the blaze had been dealt with shortly before 5pm on Monday.
“Our firefighters worked tirelessly throughout the duration of the incident to ensure that the fire was brought under control and prevented the spread to the remainder of the buildings,” a spokesman said.
“The cause of the fire is believed to have been deliberate ignition. It is thought that bins were set alight and the fire had spread to the nearly buildings.”

The Greenisland community turned out in support of The Church of the Holy Name
Mark BainThu 5 Sep 2024 at 07:43Hundreds of people from across the Greenisland community turned out last night to hear Rev Isobel Hawthorne-Steele deliver a message of hope just four days after a devastating arson attack on the Church of the Holy Name
A special service was held in neighbouring Greenisland Baptist Church
where the clergywoman admitted there will still be plenty of sadness to come over the next few years
with many events unable to take place at the place of worship which has been a part of the community for 70 years
I’m sure there will be many more,” she said
we have to remember that God will not be separated from us
and in the midst of all the fire engines and police cars flying about she went away and came back with a tub of Angel Delight
“On the top of it was written ‘Rev Isy I know you’re sad
“The support has been amazing from everybody
This church has an emotional tie to everything and everyone in this community
It’s sad that over the next few years there are going to be marriages
and sadly funerals that we can’t have in our beautiful church
“I just want to say a big thank you to everybody who has been so generous
All their kindness is going to be much needed and very much appreciated
I am so privileged to be the leader of a wonderful church
Recalling the night of the fire she added: “I was in my pyjamas
My husband Sam said ‘the church is on fire
it takes time to get over a shock like that
It was five o’clock and I was able to go down and at that stage the hall has completely burnt to the ground
“The Chief Fire Officer kindly said he would take me into the church
She said she had been particularly thankful for the support from the young people in the congregation
with around 40 of them arriving at her home on Tuesday night to join in prayer
Last night’s service took place in the nearby Baptist church
with the burnt out Anglican church building visible through the window
Pastor Michael Wylie said Rev Hawthorne-Steele had told him it was to be an uplifting evening
“She said she didn’t want this to be a funeral,” he said
“There is an incredibly unity amongst us all
Rev Isy and the congregation will have all our support in the days and months ahead.”
Alliance MLA Stewart Dickson was among those turning out to support the church
“What we have seen is a massive show of support for the congregation and it’s no more than you would expect from this community,” he said
“All the churches and their communities have come together
That’s the one silver lining that’s come from this
working with young people in this community
and remains keen to reach out to those who have been responsible for this
“What we so know is that this community is together and this church will rebuild.”

2024 at 8:15pm BSTThree young boys accused of setting fire to a Co Antrim church are no longer facing prosecution
had been charged with arson over the blaze which swept through The Church of the Holy Name in Greenisland on September 1
But criminal proceedings were ended before they were set to make their first court appearances
The boys will instead be dealt with through a youth diversionary programme aimed at achieving a restorative outcome
Police said the decision involved taking into account their ages and any views expressed by potential victims
During the blaze an adjoining parish hall at the site on Station Road also went up in flames
All three boys had been expected to attend Belfast Youth Court on Monday for the first stage in the case.
However, it is understood that criminal proceedings against them were withdrawn last week.
There was no mention of the case during the court session.
In a statement issued tonight, the PSNI confirmed: “Three boys, two aged 11 and one aged 10, charged with arson in relation to a fire at a church and church hall in Greenisland on Sunday 1 will now be dealt with via a Youth Engagement Clinic for restorative outcomes.
“The decision was made following consideration and consultation with criminal justice partners, taking into account a range of factors, including the age of the children involved.
“The views of victims are also an important element in this Youth Engagement Process.”
The statement added: “Youth Engagement Clinics are a collaborative effort, led by the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Youth Diversion Officers, involving the young offender, their parent or guardian, Youth Justice Agency representatives, and if applicable, the victim.”

Firefighters at Greenisland Parish Church on Station Road
A fundraiser for a Co Antrim church targeted in an arson attack has raised over £6,000 just hours after it was torched
On Sunday evening, nine fire-fighting appliances and 49 firefighters attended the Church of the Holy Name in the Station Road area of Greenisland
which is not being treated as hate related
was caused by a bin set alight which later spread to the church hall
A fundraiser has since been set up by some members of the community in response to the damage
which has so far raised £6,700 within hours
"We’ve been overwhelmed by the love and support of the community after the devastating fire at the Church of the Holy Name Church of Ireland in Greenisland,” the church said
"Many of you have asked for a way to support us as we seek to rebuild
We would really appreciate the support if you would like to contribute
The funds gained from the GoFundMe profile will go to the efforts to rebuild the church building
with the campaign opened in response to the hundreds of queries the church had received about what the community could do to assist them
The fire occurred on the week of the church’s 70th anniversary which formally takes place on Wednesday
and just hours after a large celebration took place to honour the community
Reverend Issy Hawthorne Steele said the plan was initially to have another anniversary service on Wednesday evening to mark the event
this meeting has instead been replaced with a solidarity ‘Stand Together’ gathering which will take place at 7pm in the neighbouring Greenisland Bapist Church
who have been supporting members of Greenisland Parish
alongside the fellow neighbouring building Greenisland Methodist
“We had initially planned another meeting for the actual anniversary on Wednesday
which has now been replaced by a meeting to talk about the community response to what has happened,” said Reverend Hawthorne Steele
who has been at the helm of the parish for three years and a member of the church since she was 7-years old
"We’ve already had people from all kinds of trades who have contacted us offering their services – builders and such.”
firefighters returned to the scene after neighbours spotted signs of smoke coming from the wreckage
This fire destroyed the adjoining church hall and the roof of the main church building
"There was a concern that smoke was coming from the ridge at the top of the roof,” the church said on social media about the damage late last night
"The crews have broken the tiles to get at the void along the ridge and they’re now cooling it all down with more water
“Unfortunately it means that the roof now looks worse than ever — but it was already damaged
Again the dedication of these fire crews is just astounding.”

Substantial damage was caused after the blaze broke out at the Greenisland Church of Ireland building on Sunday at around 9.10pm.
Firefighters remained at the scene on Monday morning as police confirmed the incident was being treated as arson.
A PSNI spokesperson said: “At approximately 9.10pm, we received a report of a fire at the property on the Station Road.
“Officers along with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Fire Service attended and the blaze was extinguished.
“The church was celebrating its 70th anniversary this week, and last night was busy in particular.
“Thankfully no one was injured, however a significant amount of damage was caused to both buildings.
“We are treating this as arson and I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed anyone suspicious in the area or to anyone with CCTV, doorbell or other footage that could assist with enquiries, to contact police on 101 quoting reference 1437 of 01/09/24.”

The minister of a Co Antrim church which was set on fire last month has said she is “delighted” that the three young boys charged with the arson will not face prosecution
had been charged over the blaze which swept through The Church of the Holy Name in Greenisland on September 1
A Co Antrim man was remanded into custody on Saturday accused of choking and assaulting his partner
Standing in the dock of Ballymena Magistrates Court
23-year-old Alan Lowry confirmed he understood the three charges against him
all alleged to have been committed on October 3 this year
and non-fatal strangulation amounting to battery
While he is accused of attacking the woman
defence counsel Grant Powles submitted the 23-year-old would be making a counter claim against his 43-year-old partner
revealing that she was at one stage his stepmother
He claims that he is the one being “controlled and assaulted” by his older partner
a detective outlined how police received a call from a distressed woman just before 11pm on Thursday evening
she claimed that despite bail conditions barring contact
he had been staying with her for the previous few days
She further claimed during that time Lowry ”was torturing her with verbal abuse
The officer told the court that according to the alleged victim
threw the TV on the bed where she was lying and pushed her to the floor
“It was said he then put his hand around her neck and squeezed with enough force to stop her being able to breathe,” they added
“She concedes that she used force to get him off her,” said the cop
“saying that he was going to break her jaw properly”
“She says that he is a jealous person and would look through her phone when it is unattended and he is abusive to her.”
Lowry claimed he was acting in self defence but the detective confirmed there was an extensive history of domestic violence between the parties
The woman has been assessed as vulnerable and as being at high risk of domestic violence
The officer highlighted police were concerned that Lowry would not abide by bail conditions because he had previously breached them — contacting his alleged victim just six minutes after he was freed from custody
Submitting that being bailed to Greenisland “would put distance between them,” defence counsel Grant Powles told the court Lowry had shown him scratches and bruises “all over his body.”
Revealing that the victim “would have been his stepmother originally,” the barrister told the court that
“he has been in a controlling relationship from this woman and has been subject to this for a number of years”
he has suffered from an addiction… and she has been using his vulnerabilities and addictions to fuel that control,” claimed Mr Powles
District Judge Nigel Broderick said given the previous breaches of bail and history of domestic violence
he was refusing bail and remanded Lowry into custody to October 17

Qatar: Qatar Foundation’s (QF) Green Island has quickly become a key component of sustainability education in the country
offering students and the wider community a hands-on introduction to Qatar’s ambitious environmental efforts
The Green Island exemplifies Qatar Foundation’s vision of integrating sustainability with education
engaging over 1,000 students in less than six months through immersive programmes that combine environmental awareness with innovation and community impact
“Education is at the heart of everything we do at Qatar Foundation and Green Island is another brick to the edifice,” said Ouassim Alami
Strategic Initiatives Advisor at QF in an interview with The Peninsula
we wanted to create a transformative education experience that contributes to Qatar Foundation’s pioneering mission,” he added
Visitors to Green Island learn about Qatar’s impressive sustainability journey—from having zero recycling to meticulously sorting seven types of waste
They explore the ambitious 2030 solar energy strategy
which aims to secure 30% of the nation’s energy needs from renewable sources
and reflect with students on how hydroponic farming is transforming agriculture in Qatar’s arid climate
The Green Island initiative was inspired by a gap between public perception and the country’s actual achievements in sustainability
“We had noticed that most national mega projects were unknown to the general public,” Alami said
“There was a sense that sustainable innovation only happened elsewhere
showing how Qatar—despite its size and environmental challenges—is leading the global race against climate change,” he added
The programmes highlight real-world projects supporting Qatar’s 2030 sustainability vision
from showcasing how the country now streams seven types of recyclable waste to teaching students about solar energy goals and the promise of hydroponic farming in arid climates
Green Island also serves as an incubator for creativity and entrepreneurship
we offer short-term incubation opportunities to test and pilot new business ideas,” Alami said
As Qatar Foundation marks its 30th anniversary
Green Island is a living symbol of its legacy in applied sustainability
“Education City has long been a testbed for eco-architecture
“Green Island continues that legacy by acting as a permanent exhibition of the efforts being made to combat climate change,” he added
Green Island targets younger generations with programming tailored to schools and youth groups
“We understand that schools are overwhelmed with an existing curriculum,” Alami said
“Our mission is to bridge general environmental studies with the specific and often underrepresented sustainability journey of Qatar.”
Feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive
students leave Green Island with a sense of pride and empowerment
“It’s often the first time they hear Qatar’s unique sustainability narrative
That trust and engagement is what we strive for.”
Partnerships are a cornerstone of Green Island’s success
and Kahramaa have all contributed to the Green Island’s showcases
which are often branded to highlight the key players in Qatar’s environmental movement
“We believe sustainability is everyone’s mission
That’s why we involve both public and private sectors in shaping this dynamic space,” said Alami
is a recycling hub and edutainment platform designed to help bring people together to minimize environmental impact
Green Island uniquely blends modern technology with traditional Qatari sustainability practices
“We teach the merits of hydroponic farming and solar energy while honoring the wisdom of resource conservation rooted in our culture,” said Alami
This dual approach is exemplified by initiatives such as the first endogenous plant species catalogue
which has helped revive Qatar’s natural ecosystems
The island also features cutting-edge research from institutions like Hamad Bin Khalifa University and Texas A&M at Qatar
with projects focusing on biofuel production and plastic waste reduction
“Our primary goal is to educate visitors that every action matters
Sustainability here isn’t just a policy—it’s a holistic lifestyle
and essential for our health and longevity,” Alami said
