Jenkyns vowed there would be “an end to soft touch Britain” and declared it was a "new dawn in British politics"
Dame Andrea has certainly worn many different hats - from working at Greggs after leaving school at 16
to a political career spanning local authorities
But who is she, and what shaped the former Conservative minister's return to politics
Subscribe free to our weekly newsletter for exclusive and original coverage from ITV News
Jenkyns' political career began at Lincolnshire County Council
where she was elected in 2009 - a seat she later lost to UKIP
But 2015 saw her political career gain momentum
beating Labour's Ed Balls to the Morley and Outwood constituency
a seat she ended up holding for nine years
A staunch supporter of Brexit and Boris Johnson
Jenkyns submitted no-confidence letters in both former prime ministers
Under the Johnson administration
she was appointed assistant whip in September 2021 before becoming an education minister in July 2022
she sparked outrage when she flipped her middle finger at the public outside Downing Street as she was en route to watch Johnson's resignation speech
Her actions were met with outrage from teachers' leaders after footage of the incident circulated on social media
she claimed a “baying mob outside the gates were insulting MPs on their way in" - something that "is sadly too common,” she added
She was reappointed in the role by Liz Truss that September
who she endorsed in the party leadership election
but remained part of the cabinet for only 49 days and left after Rishi Sunak became the new prime minister
In the run up to the election, she was forced to defend using a picture of herself and Nigel Farage on her campaign leaflet
she said: "All conservatives must be prepared to come together to prevent a socialist supermajority and the end of Britain as we know it."
Dame Andrea was voted out of her constituency of Leeds South West and Morley in last year's general election
She then defected from the Conservative party to Reform UK in November 2024
Describing her former party as "tired"
she claimed to be "politically aligned" with Nigel Farage
Jenkyns will now oversee a £24 million budget and influence areas such as transport
ITV News' Political Correspondent Shehab Khan
who has been watching events unfold from North Lincolnshire
said: "Her election as the first Mayor of Greater Lincolnshire now offers a revealing opportunity to see how Reform governs in practice
"One member of the shadow cabinet summed up their mood with a pointed remark: 'Let’s see how they get on when there’s actual work to do'."

AFC Wimbledon secured a League Two play-off spot with a 1-0 win at Grimsby on Saturday
Sam Hutchinson scored the only goal of the game
Here is Dave Hunt-Jackson’s lowdown on the match:
AFC Wimbledon defied the odds and their alarming recent form to snatch a battling victory at Grimsby’s Blundell Park and grab a play-off place that sees them extend their season and keep promotion hopes alive
Sam Hutchinson’s first goal for the South Londoners proved the difference in a nervy encounter while another clean sheet ensured that they took all three points and fifth place in the final table
Having gone into the game with just ten points and eight goals from the previous ten games and against a side who needed to win to usurp the Dons’ play-off spot
this was likely to be a tall order for Johnnie Jackson’s side
They produced the sort of high tempo and committed display that has been lacking for some time and might have seen them promoted already had they reached these heights more often in the last third of the season
they go into the post-season with a result that gives them a little momentum and perhaps a little self-belief too
who was absent from the bench following his sending off against Port Vale
preferring Marcus Browne as Matty Stevens’ strike partner
Jake Reeves returned from his suspension at Callum Maycock’s expense
The Dons packed the midfield with ball winners
and Sam Hutchinson and Alistair Smith joined him in the centre
Jackson was always going to look for a clean sheet first and foremost and the three central midfielders played no small part in achieving it
Whilst the front two were feeding on scraps Grimsby had only a glaring missed header from Danny Rose to show for their efforts as Wimbledon ran out surprisingly comfortable winners
they defended further up the field than has been the case in recent games and looked more like the side of the first two-thirds of the season than the one that has struggled recently
Rock solid at the back as he and his fellow back line kept the hosts’ goal threats to a minimum
BEST MOMENT: Sam Hutchinson’s reaction as he celebrated a first goal in three years and his first for AFC Wimbledon
MOAN OF THE MATCH: There was nothing to moan about in a fine win
but the amazing 1,146 Dons’ support must be wondering why this level of performance has been missing for much of the last third of the season
Notts County’s struggles and only seventh-placed Chesterfield in better form than AFC Wimbledon
could the Dons yet fill their potential and achieve the promotion that they arguably should have already completed
three extra fixtures would certainly not go amiss either
It’s just the start – we need to go and finish the job off
“But coming here under massive pressure today against a direct rival that can leapfrog you
We all would have loved to have been in that top three
but if you look at where we are as a football club and how far we have come
everyone would have accepted that fifth is a massive overachievement compared to our rivals.”

CCTV cameras have been installed at Grimsby Auditorium to help stop nuisance behaviour
The 20 new cameras are situated around the entirety of the venue and are connected to the Council’s main CCTV network
the £2.25 million system ensures that North East Lincolnshire is a safe and welcoming place to be
there are 151 CCTV cameras and 43 Rapid Deployment Cameras across the borough in a number of locations
this new addition cements the Council’s ambition to protect the public and ensures those who are found to be breaking the law or causing Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) are given the correct sanctions
the CCTV system and other methods led to a 11% decrease in crime in Grimsby Town Centre and has been one of the main instigators in ensuring those breaking the law are reprimanded
perpetrators have been found guilty and sentenced for a range of crimes including assault
there have been reports of cars being driven erratically at the rear of the building as well as other ASB deemed to be a nuisance to the area
these incidents will cease and make sure the Auditorium is only being used for its intended purpose
Director of Lincs Inspire Venues & Enterprises
said: “On behalf of Lincs Inspire we would like to extend our thanks to the Council for its recent investment in CCTV at Grimsby Auditorium
“This important upgrade not only enhances the safety and security of our patrons and staff but also demonstrates the Council’s commitment to creating a more secure environment for everyone
This support allows us to continue to deliver enjoyable and memorable experiences
whilst giving our guests greater peace of mind.”
Portfolio Holder for Safer and Stronger Communities
Adding extra security to some of our most important buildings can only be a positive action
“The auditorium is an amazing entertainment venue
the Council and Lincs Inspire are both agreed that people’s safety is the number one priority
Let this be a warning to those who are committing ASB in the area
“We have seen how effective the CCTV system has been across the rest of the borough since its installation and I’ve no doubt it will be just as helpful here.”

The Sulphurites almost hit back immediately when Taylor struck an upright and March could not convert from the rebound

The administration of Transafe Logistics in Grimsby was connected to its sister company’s financial challenges brought about by serious mechanical problems across its MAN fleet
PT Hire collapsed after it began to experience issues with MAN’s Euro 6c engines within its fleet; at one point it had more than 80 lorries off the road
Transafe Logistics was “heavily reliant” on the hire firm
When PT Hire entered administration in October 2024
lenders commenced vehicle repossession and Transafe started to lose the HGVs it needed to operate
FRP said: “This had a devastating impact on Transafe’s ability to trade.”
The haulier was incorporated in 2004 and traded out of two operating centres in Stallingborough and Doncaster
employed around 90 staff and operated around 58 HGVs
But when PT Hire entered administration it too began to struggle and so moves were made to sell the business as it was seen as providing a better outcome for creditors than alternative insolvency measures
A deadline for interested parties was set for 20 December and on that date the administrator had received one offer of £20,000 from a connected party
“The connected party was Trucksafe Logistics
an entity owned by [Transafe director] Mr Stuart Dytham and operated by two employees of Transafe Logistics
who are both directors of the connected party,” the administrator said
“The company is also connected as the director of Transafe Logistics
is the company secretary of the purchaser.”
Ann previously told Motor Transport that over the last decade
PT Hire had only rented out MAN trucks to customers and she spoke of the devastating decision her and her husband made to place the business in administration after building it up over 40 years
MAN was approached for comment but it declined
Specialist transport firm Transafe Logistics in Grimsby has lodged papers in court declaring its intention to appoint an administrator
More details have emerged about the collapse of truck rental firm PT Hire
with its administrator saying it had more than 80 MAN lorries off the road at one point due to “significant mechanical issues”
Truck hire company PT Hire has entered administration
with insolvency experts citing “mechanical issues” with its fleet as a primary reason for its collapse

present and future of our town will be celebrated on Great Grimsby Day next Tuesday March 11 – which is one of the most significant days in the town’s rich history
North East Lincolnshire Council will team up with Radio Humberside
who will air their Mid-Morning Show with Carla Greene live to commemorate the issuing and sealing of Great Grimsby’s very first Royal Charter – which took place 824 years ago in 1201
The show will begin with the raising of the Great Grimsby Borough flag at 10.03am and will continue with interviews with a number of local organisations
including the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Civic Society
and the Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council
who will talk about the regeneration of the town centre
The show will then come from Grimsby Minster from 12-1pm talking about the rich history of the church and what it means to the local community

Listen BACK – BBC Radio Humberside – Carla Greene on BBC Radio Humberside, 11/03/2025
In more recent years, Great Grimsby Day has also been celebrated in January, dating back to 2008 when Young’s Seafood launched a new range of frozen fish. The promotion included the then Grimsby MP Austin Mitchell having his picture taken with a giant fish finger near Parliament.
This year, however, The Grimsby and Cleethorpes Civic Society and the Chartered Freemen of Grimsby have called for the ‘charter day’ in March to become the official Great Grimsby Day celebration, and both the Council Leader and the Mayor are in support on behalf North East Lincolnshire council.
Unfortunately, the original Royal Charter of 1201 was lost many years ago, but Grimsby Town Hall is home to several other significant Charters, Letters Patent, and documents, including the earliest surviving Charter dating back to 1227. Here, you can also see a stone bust of King Edward III, recognising the King’s contribution to promoting Grimsby’s maritime trade.
Great Grimsby Day is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the connection between the past and what we see and experience in the town today, especially this year as the town centre embarks on one of the biggest transformations in recent history.
The proud celebrations will begin with the raising of the Grimsby Borough Flag at 10.03am (just after the radio news) at the Town Hall by The Worshipful the Mayor of the Borough of North East Lincolnshire, Cllr Stephen Beasant.
He said: “Great Grimsby Day is such a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the town’s past, and the signing of the charter was such a significant moment in history. In a year when we have so many fantastic projects underway to regenerate the town centre and take Grimsby forward it is good to look back and remember how we started.”
Johnnie Jackson takes his AFC Wimbledon side to Grimsby Town on the final day of the League Two season
Winning promotion to League One would mean "everything" to AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson as his side prepare to visit Grimsby Town on the final day of the League One season
A run of four games without a win has taken the Wombles out of automatic promotion contention and leaving them needing a point to ensure they don't drop out of the play-off spots right at the end
"It'd mean everything to me," Jackson told BBC London TV
"It's been a long road to get here
to be in this position because it's been challenging
The Mariners trail the sixth-placed Dons by two points and two places and will clinch a place in the top seven themselves with victory at Blundell Park on Saturday
Grimsby ran out 1-0 winners thanks to Danny Rose's headed goal in the reverse fixture in November
Despite missing out on automatic promotion
Jackson credited his players for remaining in contention for much of the season
"They've done great to be in and around it all season despite some setbacks," he said
"I said that the only time we came out of it was when the pitch exploded [it was flooded in September] and we fell three or four games behind
then they clawed their way back in from that time
"There's been some real challenges
before Christmas we basically lost three or four midfielders in one week
"To keep fighting the way they have and have their destiny in their own hands and go into the final day of the season fighting for a play-off spot
I think they've done brilliant."
L1 & L2 preview: Promotion and play-off prospects
Top scorer Matty Stevens has 17 League Two goals for Wimbledon this season
Wimbledon's steely defence have conceded 10 fewer goals than any other side in League Two this season (35)
But they are also the lowest scorers in the top seven with 55 goals and Jackson believes this is an area where they have let themselves down at times
Matty Stevens has 17 league goals in a stellar season since joining the club from Forest Green Rovers last summer
Yet only one has come in his past 15 appearances
you couldn't find a steadier lad - the way that he is
he's a goalscorer," Jackson said
other people have to step up and that's probably what we haven't done this is score enough goals
because we've got the best defence by a good way in the entire league
"Just relying on him for goals isn't the way to do it
we need others to step up when he doesn't do it
hopefully he'll get a couple more and that's going to help us."
will have to cope on Saturday without their head coach in the dugout
Jackson was charged with misconduct by the Football Association for acting in an "improper manner" during the Dons' 2-0 loss at home to Port Vale last weekend - a result that sent the Valiants up
He was handed a one-match touchline ban and a £1,000 fine by an independent regulatory commission on Friday
Director of football Craig Cope was given a £650 fine and warning for "acting in an improper towards a match official around the tunnel area after the final whistle"

The demolition of the former Top Town Market will begin next week (from 28 April)
This is the first part of the demolition phase of works for the Freshney Place leisure scheme
Since the project started on the ground earlier this year
lots of work has been going on in the old market hall
along with the suspended ceiling and much of the mechanical and electrical equipment
All waste has been separated into streams for recycling
Core samples have been taken from the floor so that the team can analyse the make up of the ground to inform the construction work in the coming months
eight archaeological trenches have been dug to check what is underneath the market hall in various areas
“Given the construction of the market hall and developments in this space over the years
we didn’t expect for there to be any significant remains
The only item we found in the trenches was an oyster shell
“The work is going really well,” continued Dave
“We’ve completed the soft strip of the Market Hall and we’re starting the main demolition on Monday.”
it will slowly work inwards through the site in a controlled manner between the structural beams and pillars
The demolition will be carried out during the daytime using specialist equipment to nibble away the building
Progress photos for the work will be available from www.nelincs.gov.uk/building-our-future
Our ambition is to create an attractive and safe town centre where people want to spend time
our current shops and facilities must be supported with other reasons to visit – leisure
There are lots of projects in Grimsby town centre, all devised from the Grimsby Town Centre Masterplan
the Council talked with hundreds of local people and businesses to find out what they wanted to see in the town centre in the next 10 years
The projects on the ground have come from this work
In June 2020, the Council commissioned Arup to develop a detailed town centre Masterplan for Grimsby with the key objective of guiding plans for the investment and delivery of transformational projects for the town over the next 10 years
The town has progressed a number of projects following its early pilot Town Deal in 2018 with Government and the Masterplan now provides the strategy for the next stage of the town’s development
Its evidence base has been used to prioritise the town centre projects for delivery, with the Towns Fund programme being the route to this delivery. The Masterplan can be found on the Town Deal page
The deal lead by the Greater Grimsby Board and backed by public and private investors has unlocked millions of pounds worth of development for the town
In June 2022, in addition to the successful Cleethorpes bid, North East Lincolnshire Council submitted two further Levelling Up Fund bids to Government. The one for Grimsby (PDF, 1MB) (PDF, 8MB) was successful.

Over 100 young people along with their parents and carers flocked into the careers event at the Humber Royal
to discover more about post-16 options including apprenticeships and colleges
including industry experts from sectors like engineering
teaching and the Royal Air Force offering various opportunities for young people
the event is about more than just the jobs on offer
Those attending found it an invaluable experience in networking and gaining greater insight into what may be in their futures
we can get a proper insight into what it’s like to go into the job role
They can tailor the advice and information to what I’m looking for
which is sometimes missing when they are talking to the whole school.”
it’s really good having things like this for parents
it gives us the opportunity to see where the children can progress to
and it gives us an idea of what they need to be looking at as well
The industry professionals we’ve spoke to have given us some really good information and something to look out for.”
Helena Gollings was at the event representing Grimsby Institute
promoting the various apprenticeships on offer
“These events are so important for our community
We know the younger generation get these career days in schools
but the parents don’t often get a chance to come
and can even find opportunities for the whole family,” said Helena
Organised by North East Lincolnshire Council
with support from The Greater Lincolnshire Careers Hub
the event comes at a time when earning ability and job opportunities across the borough are growing
Latest figures show that unemployment in North East Lincolnshire is now lower than the regional average for Yorkshire and the Humber
and the potential to earn good salaries is increasingly accessible for residents
with gross annual earnings for full time employees 6.9% higher in 2024 compared to 2023
With renewable energy and decarbonisation being a major focus along the South Humber Bank
it is predicted that thousands of jobs will be available in the coming decade
Project Controls Lead at Phillips 66 and Chair of North East Lincolnshire Council’s Skills Board
spoke about the growing industries here in the borough and what this means for young people
there are immense opportunities for skills growth and investment
which are showcased at events like the Parents’ Careers Evening
“With the billions worth of investment in industrial decarbonisation as well as new homes built in the Humber region
we’re going to need a peak resource of over 12,000 people to deliver the construction
Other opportunities are in artificial intelligence and the data centres alongside.”
but believes aspirations and the growing investment is key to making a change:
“Creating the right economic environment is crucial
with numerous opportunities to bring the Greater Lincolnshire and Humber region out of deprivation and create better lifestyles,” added Mark

New Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) in the heart of Grimsby and Scunthorpe will be opening in March.
NHS will be welcoming our first patients to the £19.4 million centre on Lindum Street, Scunthorpe, from w/c 3 March, followed by the £10 million unit in Grimsby’s Freshney Place Shopping Centre on w/c 10 March.
Together, these new centres will allow us to offer up to 300,000 additional diagnostic tests every year, affording patients greater choice and flexibility as well as reducing the need to come to hospital sites.
Staffed by expert clinicians, the centres will offer a range of diagnostic tests, helping to detect serious conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and respiratory conditions.
NHS Humber Health Partnership Group Chief Strategy and Partnerships Officer, Ivan McConnell, said: “These centres will help to make a significant difference to patients across northern Lincolnshire, providing additional appointments in easily accessible locations.
“Not only will patients no longer have to come to our busy hospital sites for these tests, but the centres will also provide greater flexibility, with early morning, evening, and weekend appointments available. In order to offer these additional services, we have already recruited additional expert clinical staff for these new centres, some of which will also rotate between the centres and providing acute care in our hospitals.
“Another benefit of providing these additional appointments away from our hospital sites is that it frees up clinicians working in our hospitals to care for patients requiring acute care, reducing the amount of time inpatients need to wait for diagnostic tests – and, of course, with less people coming to our hospitals there will also be less demand for parking too.
“We have also been very deliberate in siting these two new Community Diagnostic Centres in the heart of the town centres of Grimsby and Scunthorpe, helping to drive more people into these areas and support local businesses.”
The successful business cases for the new CDCs were developed by colleagues working together as part of the Humber and North Yorkshire Collaboration of Acute Providers (CAP).
The CAP is a partnership that brings together NHS Trusts which deliver services across the region – Humber Health Partnership, York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals, and Harrogate District – with the collective ambition of ensuring better health for people in Humber and North Yorkshire and better care for patients.
Wendy Scott, CAP Managing Director, said: “We are thrilled to see these two new CDCs go live. They form part of a programme of eight, spanning all corners of our region, that are being delivered by the CAP.
“These successful bids – supported by all the Trusts – are a major step forward for Humber and North Yorkshire as a whole and are another home-grown example of how this collaboration continues to make a positive difference.
Helen Kenyon, NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) Place Director for North East Lincolnshire, said: “I’m delighted that these centres are now ready to receive patients – it will have such a positive impact on healthcare in our region.”
“The town centre location means the centre is easily accessible by car or via public transport. The bus and railway stations are both close by and there is ample parking available in the neighbouring multi-story car parks.”
Cllr Philip Jackson, leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “This is a great new facility providing convenient healthcare for our residents in the centre of town.
“The addition of the CDC sees Freshney Place become a real multipurpose location, in the heart of Grimsby, where people can come not only for appointments, but also to have the convenience of being able to access the local shops and facilities at the same time.”
Cllr Stan Shreeve, Deputy Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council and Portfolio Holder for Health, Wellbeing and Adult Social Care, added: “Being able to offer a service such as this will make such a difference to local people who will have even more opportunities to be able to access care to detect serious illnesses.
“Situated within an accessible location such as Freshney Place could make a significant difference to patients being able to access appointments in a more convenient way, whilst also relieving pressures on the hospital. I am pleased our town centre is able to provide such a facility and I am delighted to see it opening.”
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This is great news for North Lincolnshire residents and another positive note for the High Street with plans to build a new future.
“This new health centre will have a massive impact on residents’ access to critical health services, further improving health and wellbeing for thousands of people.
“It is also further good news for the town centre in Scunthorpe – a major investment which will drive more people into the town centre for more reasons.”

A group of green fingered locals donned their wellies and gardening gloves to help plant 275 new trees in Scartho during the Easter holidays
organised by North East Lincolnshire Council
was part of the ‘Greening Up Our Place’ project
This initiative has been supported by successful funding from the Forestry Commission’s Local Authority Treescapes Fund (LATF) and Urban Tree Challenge Fund (UTCF)
The project aims to increase canopy cover in urban areas and replace trees that were previously felled due to damage or disease
This community program is a key component of the Council’s Tree Strategy
which outlines North East Lincolnshire Council’s approach to managing and protecting the existing tree population
and promoting the significant benefits trees provide to society
Although the Council’s main tree planting program concluded last month
275 young trees (whips) were reserved for this special event
This allowed children and young people with care experience to contribute to an initiative that has engaged community groups and schools since its inception in 2023
portfolio holder for Children and Education said:
“It is wonderful to see our foster families getting involved in the greening up our place project
I hope the children and young people take great pride in being involved in this initiative.”

There are so many benefits that trees offer us
not least of which is the effect they have on our efforts to get to net zero by capturing and storing carbon from the atmosphere

Grimsby boss David Artell is expecting a cagey affair on Saturday in their final day battle for a play-off spot against AFC Wimbledon.
The Dons, sixth in League Two, head to Blundell Park knowing a point would be enough to secure their place in the top seven.
Grimsby are eighth and need to beat the South Londoners to leapfrog them in the hunt for a play-off spot.
Wimbledon will be without Johnnie Jackson in the dugout after he was sent off in their 2-0 defeat to Port Vale last Saturday.
Artell said: “If you had said to us in August: ‘You have one game to get into the play-offs,’ I would have snatched your hand off.
“If you had said the same in February and March, or April, we would have said the same.
“We hope there are a few more twists and turns in our season before Saturday.
“It was a real tough game down at Wimbledon and we managed to edge it with a goal. It played out as we expected it to.
“We’re hoping that it’s tight and cagey. We hope we can get a little bit of quality from some of our players to get some goals.
“You only have to win by one and with the clarity of our situation allows, hopefully that will be enough.
“It’s probably the biggest game this football club has had in its recent history and it’s one we’re all looking forward to.
“Hopefully we have got 90 more minutes to show we’re worthy of a play-off place.”

"I'm not always one to show emotions but it got to me a little bit today," Lewington told BBC Three Counties Radio
"I've not played 90 minutes all season and there was no way I was going to last that long
I could feel my legs getting a bit tired and I didn't want to be at fault for a goal or cost the team
It's been so long but it feels so short."
The Dons had a decent chance when Connor Lemonheigh-Evans' shot was well denied by Grimsby goalkeeper Jake Eastwood
Grimsby thought they had scored when Danny Rose touched in Denver Hume's cross
but an offside flag interrupted his celebrations
Rose had another effort disallowed just after half-time for a foul on Dons goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray
before Eastwood made saves to deny Lemonheigh-Evans and Scott Hogan
Grimsby's Kieran Green saw a free-kick strike a post late on
while the visitors' Evan Khouri and the Dons' Laurence Maguire both missed chances for a stoppage-time winner
