After saving a struggling Hadleigh shop from closure last year
Emma Howse is confident that its imminent relaunch can make it a success
by supporting the community to lead healthier lives
Health food shop Mung Bean temporarily closed last Saturday to enable a major refurbishment ahead of its reopening this weekend
the store in Maiden Way will begin trading under a new identity of Remedy by Mung Bean – reflecting its addition of more holistic services
As well as its current offering of health foods
the shop will begin hosting nutrition and wellness sessions
featuring a range of therapists and specialists to help improve the wellbeing of attendees
first took over Mung Bean at the end of 2024
after hearing that it was about to shut its doors due to rising utility costs
She revealed that she spent the first few months of her tenure observing the intricacies of the business to determine what worked and what did not
and what direction it should take going forward
“I had taken time off and realised that food is where my heart is,” she told the Suffolk Free Press
“I adore it and it has the power to change so many people’s lives
and then I found out Hadleigh’s health food shop was going to close
which I thought would be an absolute shame
I thought there must be a way to make it work
I didn’t want to think I knew everything and change everything
I had a look at what was selling and what wasn’t
while obviously not wanting to alienate the customers who have been so loyal up to now.”
Emma has now teamed up with the likes of homeopath specialist Avril Brown
nutritionist Emma Jamieson and hypnotherapist Charlotte Jarvis
is for each practitioner to run their own sessions on boosting physical and mental health
which she says will complement the existing health products sold in store
Emma stated that her hope is to be able to break even over the next year or so
and believes this expanded offering will help to do so
anyone who comes through the door here has a question of some sort about health
so we want to be able to provide an answer for them,” she added
“Each person reacts differently to organic produce
but if we can point them in the direction of someone who might be able to help them
but the most important thing is to try to be a pillar of the community.”

Remedy by Mung Bean will sell organic wholefoods
New additions include local health foods such as Scobys kombucha
and Tabboule Tal raw nuts and seed energy bites
The shop has also teamed up with Long Melford-based Sunshine and Green
to serve as a collection point for customers of the company’s organic vegetable boxes
the sessions which are available at the weekends from 29 March and during the first week of the Easter Holidays
will provide an opportunity for visitors to interact with 45 playful new young goats who were recently born in the Rare Breeds Centre at the countryside setting
Hadleigh Farm staff are currently busy taking care of the new baby goats
The majority are on mum’s milk with one being hand-reared by the team while older kids are being given Christmas trees as a snack
The newborns are currently being housed inside to protect them from birds of prey and will move outside when they have grown
Some of the new arrivals are also being given names
The first set of twins to be born have been named Hope and Hadleigh while an appeal on social media for names beginning with H has seen other names including Hamish
Humphrey and Hark being given to the young animals
People attending the kid cuddling sessions will get an informative talk from a member of staff about the goats and then they will all have the opportunity to hold the kids under supervision. Separate sessions are also available for SEN children
behind the scenes tours are also being offered
where visitors will get the opportunity to help with either morning or afternoon feeding and will get access to some of the non-public areas of the Rare Breeds Centre. The morning sessions are suitable for wheelchair users as the tour will stick to hard paths
but the afternoon session will include a visit some grazing fields and animal pens
A Salvation Army spokesman said: “Spring is one of the most exciting times at Hadleigh Farm
and our kid cuddling sessions are a wonderful way for visitors to connect with our friendly goats
It’s a fantastic experience and a great way to learn about farm life.”
The Salvation Army’s Rare Breeds Centre at Hadleigh Farm aims to help conserve and promote the UK's Rare Breeds Livestock through education and breeding programmes and their visitors help to fund Hadleigh Farm’s Training Centre which provides opportunities for adults with additional support needs.

New joint Hadleigh United bosses David Thurkettle and Darren Harvey are keen to bring a ‘community feeling’ back to the club
were recently announced as the successors to Liam Scopes in the Brettsiders dugout
It is a club that they know well having enjoyed previous success as part of the reserves’ management set-up
And now that they are in charge of the first team
the pair are keen to utilise the talent in the local area
who spent the 2024/25 season as part of the coaching team at AFC Sudbury Reserves
said: “Over the last few years a lot of local players have left and gone to play elsewhere
“I’m sure that has been for a number of reasons
but we want to bring them back to the club
“We’re also keen to bring they’re families back to the club and that is one of our big aims – to create a community feeling
We’ve got a list between myself and Darren of players we’d like to try to tempt back
Some early conversations have happened since the season finished and hopefully we can get them back in.”
But while having a squad with players from the local area is one thing
Thurkettle is also keen to ensure that the group will be ‘competitive’ in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division
The most recent term was tough for Hadleigh
who finished in 17th with nine wins from their 38 outings
“We’re going to look to be as competitive as we can,” he added
“Like every club we’ll have a budget that we need to stick to
but we’re confident that we can get a very good squad together
as well as using the pathway with our under-18s and under-23s
“We’re definitely looking to be competitive and somewhere around mid-table would probably be a realistic target.”
And as well as overseeing positive results for the club
the aim is also to develop players that are capable of moving up the non-league ladder
it is a win-win situation for both parties
“We want young and hungry players that want to do well,” he said
“If they want to push on and maybe go on to play Step 3 or 4 football
If they show they have that capability and a willingness to learn then we’ll have a successful season as well.”
