Getting back home late on a Friday and feeling a little tired from recent travels (including parkrun tourism!) meant that a bit of a lie in and a short hop over to my local run at Hanworth were the order of the day
An overcast grey sky and chilly wind didn’t deter the 78 runners for event 228
to this small yet perfectly formed parkrun: two laps of the flat
mostly on paths but with some chunks of grass make this potentially a fairly fast run although the head wind today proved an extra challenge
At 19’42” congratulations to young first timer Robin as first runner home
and also with the top age grade of over 75%
Well done also to young Miguel and to Gregg hitting their 25th and 50th runs respectively and to Michael M with a total 495 runs completed: I am always inspired by the perseverance of those keeping up the weekly parkrun habit no matter what the weather or conditions
so well done to you all for beating the wind
to all the fabulous volunteers who enable us all to enjoy parkrun
especially to Hanworth’s own Herath who now has volunteered 131 times
Thankfully the tail-walkers arrived back just as the rain began so hot coffee and chats nicely rounded off another parkrun morning
If you haven’t tried Hanworth yet please do come and visit this most green and pleasant #Londone run
although not next week as Hanworth has a 1 week cancellation

The weather was on the runners and walkers’ side today with the sun shining and nice blue skies
It was the perfect spring morning to spent walking / running around Hanworth Airpark
This is my 13th parkrun and my 11th at Hanworth Airpark
I arrived early for the volunteers briefing and collected the new parkwalker vest
All the walkers and runners started to gather at the usual starting place just before 9am where David gave a total of 22 first timers the course briefing
This was to some international and other UK visitors
There was a total of 5 new park runners starting their parkrun journey with us today
Congratulations to Jeff for reaching his 100th parkrun
After Leanne went over the parkrun rules and safety bits
I took up my place as a walker at the back with the tail walker Terri following behind
With the fair weather we have had all week the course was nice and dry all the way around
I managed to get to the stretch just before the rugby club buildings before the front runners began passing me on their second lap and their way to the finish line
There was a total of 77 finishers for event 227
The Hanworth Airpark parkrun is slowly approaching its 6th birthday
Each week I try to join the team of volunteers and others at Hanworth Leisure Centre for a drink after the event as often as I can
we sort out who can volunteer the following week and in what roll
Sometimes the after-event rolls happen here as well
Volunteers are needed to allow for the event to take place
so if there is a week where you want a break in running or walking the course please feel free to talk to the Run Director or Volunteer Co-ordinator
This week we thank volunteers Leanne Murray
This won’t be my last event report for Hanworth
so keep your eyes open for the next one coming soon
It was a chilly but thankfully dry morning in Hanworth today
Conditions underfoot were described as ‘surprisingly good for the time of year’ and they really were – there was just the one puddle and no muddy bits
but well done to James Rhodes on his first ever parkrun
Five members of the 500 club were running today
with the three ‘runniest ‘all being female
but simply tell you the top 5 finishers were Declan Starrs
The highest age gradings came from Becky Thurtell
I hope everyone enjoyed their run or walk around Hanworth Park this morning
A massive thank you to all the lovely volunteers who allowed us to do so
it’s worth looking into the aviation history of the park – it's extremely interesting
Amelia Earhart once landed her plane there
I thoroughly enjoyed my 799th parkrun this morning and will be back at my recently adopted home run of Hanworth next week for the arbitrary
It was another cold January morning today but thankfully it felt considerably warmer than the -6 degrees recorded last week causing icy paths that lead to our cancellation
we are so grateful for our volunteers who filled the roster today to help support all of our participants
We had twelve first timers to Hanworth today one brand new parkrunner
We hope you enjoyed your healthy start to the weekend
congratulations to those running faster than they’ve done before
We love celebrating milestones at Hanworth so it was great to have one of our regular participants
She was joined by her husband and daughter to help celebrate this brilliant achievement
The celebrations continued with two special Hanworth birthdays
They kindly brought some treats to share at the finish area and the cafe afterwards
We always meet at the cafe in the Leisure Centre
so if you’re reading this and haven’t joined us before
Everyone is very welcome and it’s lovely to carry on the morning with great chat and company
We are always looking for help to fill our roster
so if you can help next week or any time in February
please email Hanworth@parkrun.com and we’d love to add you to the roster
Have a good week and we will see you next Saturday at 9am
joggers and walkers took part in Hanworth Parkrun #213
the actual winter solstice occurred during the parkrun
Rajalaksmi ARUNACHALAM and Srinivasaperumal SUBBIAH celebrated their 50th parkrun and treated all participants to some welcome goodies
Leah GOODWIN and Chloe KENTON completed their first ever parkrun
maybe the most important milestone of them all
Among the starters were 15 first-timers to Hanworth
A warm welcome to Hanworth and we hope you join us again soon
Farnham and District AC and first-timer to Hanworth
romped home in first place with an impressive time of 18:54
James RITCHIE of Ranelagh Harriers came second with a time of 21:25 and ROSS MEWETT-MCKINLAY came third with a time of 22:09
Congratulationsall of you on your podium finishes
Our first female finisher was Glady GARTLAND of West End Runners with a commendable24:33
Two runners achieved a personal best today: James RITCHIE and Owais BADAR
This event could not have happened without our volunteers: Julie BAYLISS
The Hanworth volunteers are a friendly bunch and there are activities you can do before and after the run which means you can volunteer and do the parkrun at the same event
Thanks to everyone who attended this parkrun
Badshot Lea's manager, Gavin Smith, shares his thoughts on the challenging 2-0 defeat against Hanworth Villa in the Isthmian League.
Goals from Finlay McNab and George Wells gave the visitors the three points in front of a crowd of 97 at Westfield Lane.
“Hanworth Villa are always a difficult side to play against – even more so now with the age of our group,” said Smith.
“It's a real learning curve for a lot of them because everything Hanworth Villa did is what our boys can't do.
“It's the consistency in decision making and making the right decisions.
“I thought Hanworth Villa were good to be fair.
“I thought they were aggressive in the way they pressed – they were all on the same page.
“They've got leaders and have got players who have played a better level – and it showed in their dominance of the game.
“We couldn't do anything – we had one half chance.
“The game wasn't littered with chances – the pitch wasn't great.
“They've scored from two set pieces but if I'm honest it flattered us a little bit that we lost 2-0.
“We were camped in our half quite a bit and couldn't get out.
“We didn't have the physicality to get out and couldn't clear the ball to get out, but that's all to do with how Hanworth Villa pressed us.
“They put us under pressure and the boys panicked.
“Credit to the opposition that they forced us into that.
“I thought we competed as much as we could but it was a step too far.
“If Hanworth Villa are not in and around the play-offs I'll be surprised – they've got a bit of everything.
“It's a good experience to compete against teams like that – we need to learn from it and try to improve.”

I've set myself a personal challenge to complete as many different parkruns since having a baby last year
I wouldn't class myself as a parkrun regular but more of an occasional participant ..
when I can be bothered to drag myself to the start line for 9am
With that being said today was a success and even managed to recruit the other half
My first mile I focused on not clipping anyone's ankles with the buggy
getting a good rhythm and waking myself up
I enjoyed a solo run as the other half took over for buggy duties
As I haven't ran for a while this was a tough one
no occasional snack pit stop for my kid ..
just a mental battle with myself all the way to the finish line
Running postpartum is less about PBs and more about finishing what I started - and that's what I love about parkrun - ALL achievements are celebrated
WELL DONE to Daisy ALLEN for participating in her first parkrun
A big WELCOME to the below participants for making their Hanworth parkrun debut
And CONGRATULATIONS to the below for achieving PBs this morning
Lastly a huge THANK YOU to the volunteers for making Parkrun possible each and every week
See you at a Parkrun soon Let’s keep moving
Allowing the homes to go ahead is a rare example of the mayor approving new construction on the green belt
News | London
Sadiq Khan has granted permission for 300 new homes to be built on London’s green belt
arguing that the project will deliver a “clear public benefit”
Kinahan says he cannot provide voice for veterans as he quits commissioner role
HS2 station could be redesigned for level boarding on Elizabeth line
Make education a priority with help from these acclaimed resources
The scheme off Forest Road in Feltham will also involve the restoration of the dilapidated 222-year-old Hanworth Park House
with the new homes built on surrounding woodland
Ordinarily, building of new properties on green belt land would be refused by the mayor
as his London Plan stresses the need to “protect and enhance” the capital’s open spaces
It states that all proposals that would “harm” the green belt should be rejected
“except where very special circumstances exist”
Mr Khan said the project’s benefits would outweigh any harm
In a report presented to him, City Hall officers had pointed out that the scheme would deliver much needed affordable housing
as 120 of the properties will be marketed at a social rent
a Grade II-listed building which has been derelict for several years
will not only be restored as part of the project
but extended and converted to become a community hub - including a museum
The mayor said: “London’s housing crisis needs urgent action and I’m determined to do everything in my power to help
“I’ll always prioritise brownfield land for new housing development
but there are circumstances where on balance there will be a clear public benefit case for building new homes on sites designated as green belt
In this case the plans will enhance local green spaces and protect local heritage assets
“I’ll never shy away from the difficult decisions needed to get homes built in our city
The scheme had already received near-unanimous approval from Hounslow Council’s planning committee last year, along with the support of the local Labour MP
The news came on Wednesday morning as the Government prepared for the King’s Speech
which is expected to include reforms to England’s planning system
Chancellor Rachel Reeves has said she wants to make it easier for homes to be built
including on poor quality areas of the green belt

Farnham Town drew 1-1 at Hanworth Villa in the Isthmian League South Central Division.
The hosts took the lead in the fourth minute through Sam Merson’s spectacular strike.
Town got back on level terms on 41 minutes when Great Evans squared the ball to Sam De St Croix, who tapped home to earn Farnham a point.

Badshot Lea fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to Hanworth Villa in the Isthmian League South Central Division.
Goals from Finlay McNab and George Wells gave the visitors the three points in front of a crowd of 97 at Westfield Lane.
The visitors had the first shot of the evening in the second minute when Wells hit a left-foot effort over the bar.
Hanworth Villa went close again on four minutes when McNab fired his left-foot volley over the bar.
Wells tried his luck for the visitors in the 11th minute, but his low effort was well held by Baggies keeper Jake Simpson.
Luis Le Paih went close for the Baggies on 20 minutes, but his effort was well blocked.
Abdullah Javaid burst clear for Hanworth Villa on the half-hour and hit a powerful right-foot shot which was parried away by Simpson at his near post for a corner.
The visitors broke the deadlock from the resulting corner when McNab turned the ball in from close range, despite protests from the Baggies that the ball hadn’t crossed the line.
Hanworth Villa pushed for a second and Louis Collins hit a speculative left-foot shot from distance in the 34th minute which went wide.
Dylan Randall went close for the visitors six minutes later when his flicked header was held by Simpson.
The visitors did double their advantage on 61 minutes when Wells tucked the ball in from a corner.
Hanworth Villa went close from another corner four minutes later when Joe Peters’ header was well held by Simpson.
Next up for the Baggies is a trip to Harrow Borough in the Isthmian League South Central Division on Saturday, March 15 (3pm kick-off).

One of two new panels by Jann Haworth and Liberty Blake from their ongoing Work in Progress, which were commissioned for the 2025 arts and culture programme of the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos. They depict WEF cultural leaders past and present
Liberty Blake and Jann Haworth, Courtesy of the artists
The acclaimed US-born Pop artist Jann Haworth sees Work in Progress—the mural project she has been working on since 2016 with her artist daughter Liberty Blake—as a reckoning for the lack of women in Haworth’s best-known piece, the legendary cover of the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967, co-created with her then husband Peter Blake and the photographer Michael Cooper). It is also, she told The Art Newspaper in 2023, a statement for the under-representation of women in general.
Jann Hanworth was born in 1942 in Los Feliz, Los Angeles
Fowler also focuses on the importance and value of the community base of Haworth and Blake’s project. The images of women have been created through a stencilling process involving more than 250 other women over the past nine years, many of them amateur artists, with Blake working on the collages and Haworth overseeing the training and output of the community artists.
More than 60 years after Haworth broke on to the London art scene with her work in 4 Young Artists at the Institute of Contemporary Art, in 1963—including full-figure soft sculptures—she continues to champion women artists and to experiment with formats.
One new project is a fantastical graphic-novel reimagining of Lewis Carroll’s Alice through the Looking Glass, which she calls a “folly”, but something she felt compelled to write. Here, Alice is a 60-year-old man, and the story is set in Santa Monica and ends up on Pacific Ocean Park Pier, with guest appearances from the film director Alfred Hitchcock and the actor Robert Mitchum.
The other is a graphic-memoir dissection of the Hollywood of her 1940s childhood, when her Academy Award-winning art director father, Ted Haworth, often took her to watch filming. She is devising it with Stephen Dark, a writer with an encyclopaedic knowledge of film noir, and hopes to dissect the lives of larger than life Hollywood characters.
“I met these crazy people,” Haworth says. I mean, I met Marilyn [Monroe] and I met [Marlon] Brando and I was friends with Tony Curtis and Lili St Cyr, who was in The Naked and the Dead. I mean, these kind of strange, wonderful people, Kim Novak… And the arc of their life is something that I could see.”
The second panel by Jann Haworth and Liberty Blake from their ongoing Work in Progress
who co-created the classic image with Peter Blake

Three men have gone on trial for the murder of a teenager in a park after one of them was allegedly placed at the scene by his ankle tag
Daniel Matos was tracked on GPS data on the device as he, Keith Preddie and Joshua Cowley cycled to Hanworth Park in Feltham, west London, two of them armed with large knives, the Old Bailey heard
had also cycled there in his role as a runner for a local drug dealing business operated from a phone number called the “John line”
he was allegedly set on by the defendants and fatally stabbed in the neck

McDonald pays tribute to ‘patriot’ Ted Howell during funeral service
Silvertown tunnel: TfL spends £2m on bike bus that cyclists 'don't want to use'
Londoners jailed after attempting to smuggle Indian migrants into UK
His body was found the next day in thick grass near his discarded bicycle
He was still carrying nearly 30 packages of heroin and crack cocaine and £300 in cash
As well as being linked to the scene of the crime by GPS
Matos’s DNA was identified on an unlit cigarette beside the body and he had the victim’s blood on the sleeve of his hoodie
have denied murdering Mr Donnelly last January 24
Mr Evans said the killing came against the background of drug dealing and the “inherent” danger it posed
two drug users had used the “John line” to order drugs and gone to the park expecting to meet Mr Donnelly
along with the two others in face coverings or balaclavas and carrying knives
The men appeared “hyped” and when asked to leave the park
Mr Evans said: “It is the prosecution case that the three people on bikes were Preddie
the GPS data for Matos places him in the same area of the park that the three people on bikes were seen.”
Tyler Donnelly was subjected to a sustained and targeted attack inside the park
Mr Donnelly had set off from his home and was last seen alive cycling into the park at 9.12pm
he had a large knife in a leather sheath tucked into the waistband of his trousers which was unused
the three defendants were tracked on GPS and caught on CCTV re-entering the park on their bicycles
The attack on Mr Donnelly in the next five minutes was not caught on camera or witnessed by anyone
Mr Evans said: “However the violence unfolded
A penetrating stab wound to his neck was to prove fatal.”
The prosecutor alleged that all three defendants participated either as stabbers or encouraging and assisting in the killing
with the intention to cause really serious harm
with Matos changing his clothes at a friend’s address and the other two defendants going to Cowley’s home
They were all arrested four days later and made no comment in police interviews
Mr Evans said the defendants denied being involved in Mr Donnelly’s death and claimed they went to the park together to get drugs
The defence would claim that Matos went alone to get the drugs when other people appeared and attacked the dealer
Mr Evans ruled out robbery as a motive for the killing
telling jurors: “It may well be that drugs and drug dealing lie at the heart of this murder
enterprises which bring with them the obvious risks of rivalry

Arsenal legend Paul Merson's son scored a fantastic non-league goal for his side Hanworth Villa
Sam Merson found the net from an incredible volley for his side in the eighth tier of English football
writing: "Hanworth Villa's Sam Merson fired in an outrageous goal against Isthmian South Central side
"Paul Merson
Opposition team Farnham Town even posted about the stunner themselves
writing: "Wasn't to be for us last night but this goal from Sam Merson for Hanworth Villa FC is well worth watching on repeat..."
The 29-year-old forward executed a stunning pirouette as he controlled a high ball with his left foot
In one fluid motion, he then unleashed a thunderous volley that soared past the goalkeeper and crashed into the net.
The strike sent fans and teammates into a frenzy of celebration.
But no one was prouder than his dad, Paul, who praised the moment, saying: “What a goal last night, unreal.”
with one writing: "If only some certain strikers in Premier league could."
Another added: "Looks like Sam Merson's been watching his highlight reels
Just one of many outrageous goals he’s scored for the club," wrote a third
A few users attributed the 29-year-old's skill to the former Arsenal star himself
with one posting: "Learnt it from the best
"Touch of the old mans magic there Merse," penned a fifth
was no stranger to incredible goals himself
Merson found the net 99 times as well as assisting another 51 across an incredible 423 appearances for the Gunners
Merson lifted the First Division trophy on two occasions in 1988/89 and 1990/91
He won the FA Cup and the League Cup in 1992/93
as well as winning the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1993/94
Middlesbrough and Portsmouth before retiring in 2006 - a month into his spell at Tamworth
My personal quest for 50 different parkrun venues by the end of 2024 (48 and counting so it’s not even a “Will he
Won’t he?” anymore) took me to the nearest event I had not yet done (and less than 5 miles from home so I could have a lie in) at Hanworth parkrun on Saturday 29th June
The parking and the parkrun start location itself were both easy to find
so the sun was smiling down on the park runners and walkers on a lovely warm morning
After having slogged through ankle deep mud at various parkrun locations through the winter
These are the kind of mornings you dream of through the winter
and it was a rare outing for my 100-milestone running vest!
led a warm and welcoming bunch of 14 volunteers
David Duggan gave a great first timers briefing including a description of a “topologically magical” part of the course which somehow goes downhill while the rest of the loop is flat
Debbie gave us sage advice to run on the right in the early stretch to avoid potholes
and the volunteer(s) that had marked out the course did a great job of placing cones on the worst of those
Parkrun only works because of the volunteers so a big THANK YOU to all of those that gave up their time today
they were great representatives of the Vegan Runners group who today
a Vegan Runner and parkrunner who sadly passed away during the Chevin Forest parkrun only two weeks ago (15th June)
Woodhouse Moor parkrun held a remembrance event for Craig today
and Vegan Runners at other events were able to join in by wearing Craig’s trademark sunglasses and headband and a picture of Craig on their backs
It is incredibly sad to lose “one of our own” in this way
but this was a brilliant tribute from his community
There were 23 people visiting Hanworth for the first time today from places such as Hazelwood (me)
finds himself touring parkruns most weekends)
There were also a further 3 doing their first ever parkrun (Max Wynne
I hope they have caught the bug and that this was the first of very many for them
Onto the run/walk itself … 91 completed the event
and the two-lap course is a mixture of 1/3 short grass and 2/3 compact trail and tarmac.First male was Matthew Nelson (19:05 PB)
but performance of the day goes to Sally Boulton (28:14 PB)
today's best age grade finisher with a very impressive 80.17%
Tidy times awards go to “pleasingly round” Simon Moore (25:00) and Paul Grimwood (26:00)
It was a special day for our Southend visitor Neil Cornelius (400th run)
I prematurely congratulated Neil on the milestone before the event and he jokingly said he hadn’t made it round yet
I did offer to pick him up and carry him if I saw him flagging
but I’m very pleased to say my assistance was not needed … as I was huffing and puffing with 500m still to go
Neil came bouncing back the other way having already finished and been scanned
and our “senior” attendee (in terms of most parkrun runs) was Kirsty Bangham who has now clocked up an incredible 764 runs
My post-run reward was a well-deserved cup of tea at the leisure center which was only a short stroll from the finish
has approved a new housing scheme to deliver 300 homes on green belt land off Forest Road in Feltham
The London Borough of Hounslow has welcomed the scheme
This project is a significant new step forward
promising crucial public benefits to enhance the community’s quality of life
These benefits include restoring the historic Grade II listed Hanworth Park House for community use
opening up inaccessible and overgrown woodland for the public
The approved scheme includes three new residential blocks and two new ones on Council-owned land west of the listed building
The development will collectively provide up to 300 residential homes
with 40 per cent designated as affordable housing for Council Rent
The private residential development element will facilitate the restoration of Hanworth Park House
which will remain private but provide a community hub
Comprehensive community engagement has helped shape the current development scheme
establishing local support and gathering input on the desired facilities for the entire project
deputy leader of the council and cabinet member for assets
“I want to express my gratitude for the collaborative efforts that have brought this project to fruition
This is a significant milestone for Hounslow
our new housing scheme will provide affordable homes
I want to thank our council teams for their dedication and hard work in making this project a reality
The restoration of Hanworth Park House will not only preserve an important piece of our heritage but also create a vibrant community hub that will benefit residents for generations to come.”

The move follows Müller’s sale of Milk & More to Freshways last week
Müller Milk & Ingredients’ Hanworth glass bottling plant is facing closure, with the potential loss of up to 162 jobs, following last week’s surprise sale of its doorstep delivery service Milk & More to Freshways Group
Müller today confirmed it had launched a 45-day statutory collective consultation at the west London site “to assess future operational requirements” and review “the future viability” of the operation
More than 95% of Hanworth’s bottled milk output is destined for Milk & More
Freshways had already “confirmed they will not require supply from Hanworth”
confirming industry rumours that the site faced an uncertain future
And while the the value of the sale was not disclosed
it is understood to have been sold to Freshways for a nominal fee.
includes all 31 of Milk & More’s sites
with all 1,100 staff transferring over to Freshways Group
the sale does not include the Hanworth site
The bottling plant had been rescued from closure by Müller in 2016 after it announced big investment plans in more sustainable glass milk bottles and the wider Milk & More business
Hanworth boasts a long history of milk production
It was also one of the UK’s first dairies to introduce pasteurisation
Nijjar last week told The Grocer that the processor would now look to cheaper sources of glass bottles across the UK
in addition to introducing its own recyclable carton offering once it took over the running of Milk & More
“Having worked with Freshways Group to understand their future requirements for Milk & More
it is with regret that we must now address potential extra capacity at our Hanworth site,” said Müller Milk & Ingredients CEO Rob Hutchison
“We enter this process with a desire to fully understand the employee perspective and we will carefully consider all options before arriving at any decision on the future of the site.”

Living equidistant between Bushy and Hanworth parkruns gives you access to both ends of the spectrum when it comes to scale
While Bushy is an impressively massive undertaking it can be quite stressful trying to get a parking space even half an hour before the start
Not only does Hanworth not have these issues and it’s possible to turn up at the last minute and still make the start on time
it also has another huge benefit of being a smaller event in having a lovely local vibe and a hugely friendly core of volunteers
And so it was that 36 hardy souls braved the mud and the puddles of Hanworth Park on what was a beautifully sunny morning on Saturday
After the underwater parkrun of two weeks ago and last week’s cancellation it was great to hear that we would be going ahead
albeit with less than ideal conditions underfoot in some sections
No milestones to report at the briefing with the exception of a birthday for volunteer Megan
Trowbridge and Bedfont Lakes and we were counted down and set on our way by Arabella (nearly 5) who also helped out with the finish tokens at the end
The warnings of a muddy and wet course proved accurate before we reached the first corner as we tackled the first of 5 rather soggy grassy sections with mud splattering up the legs
The front 4 disappeared into the distance as the rest of the runners and walkers embarked upon the first of the two and a bit lap course
Apart from a couple of big puddles the paths were largely trouble free but it was the grass that proved most challenging
The section around the start was muddy and slippery while the far corner by the Rugby club was like paddling through a swamp
With the sunny conditions overhead it proved good fun and most importantly everyone made it round safely

warm and sunny morning was the start to Hanworthparkrun’s 181st event
I like to pick themes for my parkrun visits and so with it being Star Wars Day (“May the fourth be with you”) I wanted to find somewhere with a name that would match
This wasn’t though my first parkrun on this date as May 4thwas also a Saturday back in 2019 and at that time I chose “Millennium” Country
So from the spaceship to its pilot I move on to “Han”worth which although a bit of a stretch it also turned out to be their 5th anniversary too
I wasn’t though as ‘Solo’ as I thought with this idea today as I bumped into Phil SERGEANT at the start who had made the same connection so forming our own Rebel Alliance
Hanworth parkrun originally started on this exact date back in 2019 and after these 5 years it was easy to see it has a small but loyal and supportive local community
Joining them today we had 14 first time tourists visiting from across the capital but also Essex and Doncaster
There was also one person brand new to parkrun - Reece BROWN - hopefully this will be the first of many
We hope you all enjoyed yourself today and will visit again soon
I arrived into London by train on Friday afternoon
The weather wasn’t great but it was fine enough for being able to have a little explore
The forecast for the morning looked promising and so after a good night’s sleep and a “Chewy” bar for breakfast I headed to the park
As I arrived the final preparations were being made to the finish funnel and the cake table(!) as birthday balloons were added to the signs around the 2 laps course
Soon there were 73 of us here (the most previously actually still being the inaugural with 166 parkrunners present)
We were welcomed by Run Director ‘Luke’ (thanks for adding to my theme) LAMBART who thanked Leanne MURRAY who was also timekeeping today for her efforts getting the parkrun off the ground and ever since
With that it was over to young Arabella LAMBART who started off with a bold 3-2-1
The event would not however have been possible without 21wonderful volunteers: Kulwinder AUJLA
Thank-you to you all and if you are reading this and want to get involved in future weeks then all details can be found at http://www.parkrun.org.uk/hanworth/futureroster/
There are many different roles to choose from
Conditions were really quite good today considering how wet it has been in previous weeks
it was actually on the cusp of being a little too warm for that perfect parkrun
however seemed to have no troubles and with an early lead that was kept to the very end crossed the line in an excellent time of 18:17
HerathKARUNATILAKE and David STRUTTON completed a trio of sub-20 minute runs
This morning’s first female finisher was Yvette BURTON of Ealing Eagles Running Club in a great time of 23:15 with Terri CREASER and visitor Rose MASON following in 2ndand 3rd
Today’s fastest junior parkrunner was Isla BRADLEYin a time of 25:52
This morning’s highest age grade performance didn’t come from any of those previously named but from a great effort from Mike DENNISON whose time of 20:43 in the VM65-69category earned him a whopping 81.74% (and 4th place)
Congratulations to all of the above but also to everyone who came along today and completed the course, whether running, jogging or walking or a mix of everything. Full results can be found at http://www.parkrun.org.uk/hanworth/results/latestresults/
There was just one attendance milestone reached today and that was visitor Alex CONNELL-MOORE who reached the relatively new 25 parkrun target
visiting here for the 10th time and now reaching an amazing overall total of 757 parkruns
This is the 12th highest of anyone in the world
The most prolific locals (sorry if I missed anyone)parkrunning today were Vanessa ARTHUR (134 at Hanworth)
Mike GRIFFITHS (124 at H.) and John CALVERT (115 at H.)
getting my breath back and getting scanned I stayed around for a while and enjoyed some of the cake on offer at the finish
I joked that there was probably enough there for all the finishers of Bushy parkrun so I expect there might be people having cake for lunch and dinner too J
Unfortunately the cafe at the leisure centre seemed to be closed so as my hotel checkout was quite early I carried on there before travelling onwards to see a friend who wasn’t too far away
I’d like to finish with a final thank-you to Hanworth parkrunand all its fantastic volunteers and wish you all the best for the future
Hounslow Planning has approved a detailed proposal for the restoration of Hanworth Park House
which had been derelict for nearly 25 years
including an outline approval for 300 new homes
The councillors felt they were faced with a decision to “let the house fall down or save it.”
The detailed component includes the restoration of Hanworth Park House
which is a Grade II listed building that introduces a mixture of community uses (including a local museum
artists’ studios and an events space
commercial floorspace and a single home for an on-site manager and associated highways improvements linking the development to Forest Road to the west
The community uses would be secured in perpetuity and offered at a peppercorn rent
The outline component is for the erection of nine buildings to provide up to 300 homes and associated works
The proposed homes incorporate 40 per cent affordable (up to 120 homes)
The private market sale homes (up to 180 homes) would fund the restoration of the House
The proposal would achieve a 105 per cent reduction in carbon emissions over Building Regulations Part L compliant baseline
non-residential elements) would achieve an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating
The proposal incorporates car and cycle parking
The proposal would improve local public transport by extending the No.90 bus route
Councillors felt that the development would be an incursion into “green belt land.”
The planning document states that; “The proposal would result in harm to the openness of the Green Belt and would also result in less than substantial harm to the setting of the House and to the character and appearance of the Hanworth Park Conservation Area
While the proposal would result in the loss of 314 trees
the proposal incorporates replacement tree planting both within the site and the wider park at a 2:1 basis
Hanworth Park House is a former hunting lodge belonging to Henry VIII
The morning’s bright sunshine glittered on the heavy frost that blanketed Hanworth Park
a hopeful sign perhaps that February’s leaden grey skies and heavy rain were drawing to a close
as the recent wet weather had left behind plenty of squelchy memories which quickly became a talking point among those gathering for their weekly parkrun
“Are you ready to get muddy?” said someone as we all walked a little bit precariously on the grass
“This is a like a gazillion times worse than last week” was the resigned reply and there was little doubt that conditions underfoot were slippery as we joined the impromptu and rather fun procession to the start led by a volunteer holding the event’s pop-up banner
“Conditions are a bit soft” acknowledged Herath as he started the First Timers Welcome by explaining the two-and-a-bit lap course that awaited us
While his mention of a “muddy area” sounded a little ominous
Herath also explained how he had been parkrunning for more than 2 years and I loved his obvious passion for it
an enthusiasm so obviously shared by many of the visitors who had travelled some long distances to be at Hanworth Park on this cold winter morning
who was on her way home to Oxfordshire after visiting her daughter while Jeremy had come from Penge in South London so he could complete all the capital’s 62 different parkrun events
There were tourists too from Stratford-upon-Avon and Worcester
while I’d persuaded my family to join me on a trip from Dartford
we were all welcomed by Run Director Luke who asked us to thank the volunteers who were making possible the morning’s event
There was also a shout out for Vanessa who was completing her 100th volunteering milestone
a fact proudly proclaimed by the balloon attached to her coat that floated serenely above the briefing
Luke also returned to a familiar theme of the morning
“It’s going to be wet!” was his observation of the course we would walk
run or jog along with a promise of a particularly muddy section near the rugby field and an apology in advance for wet trainers to come
“You can’t avoid it” was the briefing’s final thought before 4-year-old Arabella set us off
There is something always amusing about following a route with plenty of puddles and stretches of mud as people initially try to leap over the water
or attempt big detours around the boggy bits
But when everyone’s feet inevitably get soaked
I watched as all participants confidently splashed their way through the puddles like seasoned cross-country runners while the enthusiastic marshals encouraged to keep going
but also so much fun as demonstrated by the many smiles at the finish funnel
69 people completed the morning’s parkrun at Hanworth Park
First timer Rob Foster was first finisher in a time of 17.57 and recorded the highest age grade of 80.87%
Danni Croucher was first female finisher in 25.05 and she was one of the 6 participants who achieved a personal best time despite the squelchy conditions
we all milled around the finish area to exchange experiences and laugh about them
Most participants were now sporting clothing which was splattered with mud
and I took a photo of first finisher Rob who wanted to pose by the pop-up banner to demonstrate how dirty his legs had become
he had decided not to do his usual event in Slough because he had thought it would be too muddy
a big thank you must go to the fantastic volunteers who stood out in the chilly conditions to offer such a warm welcome to us all
I visited Hanworth parkrun for the first time today as my normal parkrun at Bracknell was cancelled again because of mud
I confidently set off without satnav knowing exactly where I was going
finally pulled into a car park at 8.53 having taken a wrong turn or two and entered the park to see a very welcome but distant band of parkrunners gathered in the mist which gave me a quick warm up jog across the soggy grass to get to the start just in time
We celebrated one of the volunteers Angie doing her 50th volunteering at Hanworth and as always huge thanks to all the volunteers for helping the event to take place
The course is just over two laps round the edge of the park on a mixture of grass and paths and some mud
We were warned it was muddy but I didn’t find it too bad compared to the mudfest we often have at Bracknell
I really enjoyed the flat course and knowing exactly where I was the whole time
There were 52 finishers today of which a huge 22 were first timers
hope you enjoyed the event and see you again soon
Personally I had a good run and finally after 279 parkruns was delighted to see that I achieved the elusive 58 seconds on the end of my time to complete my ‘stopwatch bingo’ challenge
Thank you to everyone at Hanworth parkrun for a lovely friendly event and I’ll definitely be back – I’m confident I won’t get lost next time
having been away for two weeks due to the tragic event occurring
We started with a minutes silence to reflect on the tragic events recently in the park
I invite you to take a moment to pause for reflection if you wish
before continuing the remainder of the run report
which also happens to be Lunar New Year (Happy year of the Dragon!)
but the sun came and joined us to welcome everyone to the finish
There were also 17 fabulous volunteers to help everyone enjoy the run and get around safely
It was Marina Hipple’s 100th volunteer milestone today
you guys are what keeps Hanworth parkrun going
as there were 37 visitors to Hanworth today
some may have come as theirs were flooded so I hope they enjoyed running through the mud
The time difference between the first person and the last person finishing
that you are never too fast or too slow to join in
The age difference between the youngest and oldest was approximately 80 years (based on categories
This surely also proves you’re never too young or too old to take part
there were three Parkrun Pooches taking part
who I hope thoroughly enjoyed splashing around
it’s fair to say it was pretty squelchy underfoot
and while I personally tried to gracefully jump puddles initially I think we all found fairly quickly that the puddles were our friends helping us to clean our shoes
A massive well done to every single person who took part
5k is always a great achievement - and while many were still having breakfast
huge thanks to every volunteer for helping us get around safely
新年快樂 (Happy New year) and 恭喜發財 (prosperity to you)
(*please note - no actual swimming is required at Hanworth Parkrun
