The incident happened at Lowlands recreation ground
just behind the rear entrance of the station

and a police car remained in the middle of the field for several hours
Residents reported seeing police dog units and a number of officers near the car park directly behind the station
“Officers were called at 17:26 on Friday
“A 16-year-old boy was treated at the scene and taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service
No arrests have been made at this time and investigations continue.”

Transport for London (TfL) has announced a major new strategy to halve fare evasion across all services by 2030
with measures that will directly affect stations like Harrow-on-the-Hill
where residents have recently voiced growing concerns about the problem
TfL is expanding its team of professional investigators to target the most persistent fare evaders
and travel history to identify individuals who repeatedly avoid paying
The initiative builds on work already undertaken on the London Underground and will soon be rolled out across the Elizabeth line and London Overground
The move comes in response to increasing fare evasion across the network, including at key Harrow stations. Members of the Harrow Online Facebook Group have reported a rise in people pushing through barriers at Harrow-on-the-Hill without paying
One person posted, “I was at Harrow on the Hill station today waiting for my brother and the amount of people I see coming in and out and pushing the disabled gates is ridiculous
Every train that came in at least 5 people per train pushed through the barriers and they don’t care
there were so many – I saw a whole family doing it
I am starting to think if they can’t pay their fair
“Didn’t realise you just push the barrier open at the (Harrow on the Hill) train station and don’t have to have a ticket
I saw so many people just doing this today
The new strategy is already showing signs of success
TfL reports that fare evasion across the network dropped to 3.4% in 2024/25
the annual cost of evasion remains high at around £130 million
said: “The overwhelming majority of customers pay the correct fare
and it’s unfair to those who do that a minority avoid paying
We are strengthening our capability to deter and detect fare evaders ensuring they face the consequences of their actions and that the cost of fare evasion is paid by the evaders
not our fare paying customers or taxpayers
It robs Londoners of vital investment in a safe
frequent and reliable transport network and we are committed to reducing the current rate of fare evasion to 1.5 per cent by 2030.”
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan echoed the message
adding: “Fare evasion is a criminal offence which deprives TfL of thousands of pounds of vital revenue every year that could be reinvested in London’s transport network
That’s why we’re expanding our team of professional investigators to cover the whole network and investing in the latest technology to target the worst offenders
It sends a clear message: fare evasion will not be tolerated
and we will hold those who do it to account.”
TfL has also increased the number of uniformed enforcement officers across the network and introduced new measures like enhanced monitoring
and a focus on people who use contactless cards to dodge fares
Harrow-on-the-Hill station was closed this morning due to a local power failure

and are continuing to provide the woman with specialist support
A male was arrested on 4 November in connection with the investigation
The news comes after another woman was reportedly raped in a park nearby just a few weeks ago
Detectives would like to speak with anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident
Detective Sergeant Phil Inman said: “We know this will cause of lot of concern and anxiety in the area
it was towards the end of the COVID restrictions
I was busy settling into my new home and things were getting back to normal at work
so it was a while before I was able to explore Harrow properly
I wanted to explore what was on offer locally
I was glad to find that everything was within walking distance
the local supermarket and the local Heritage Centre
It reminded me of historical sites I like to visit when on holiday and it is free
It was here that I discovered the origins of Harrow on the Hill and the role of King Coenwulf and his daughter Princess Cenrith played at Headstone Manor
I work at the British Museum and the Anglo Saxon collection is one of my favourites
I studied English Literature at university
especially its Anglo Saxon roots is also something I wanted to find out more about
The problem with the Anglo Saxon collection is that it is from a male point of view
because the artefacts on display put men and women in traditional gender roles
Men were buried with weapons and tools and women with sewing equipment like bone needles and spindle whorls
I also realised that Anglo Saxon queens and princesses had a lot more power than I originally thought
when I read about Princess Cenrith and her role in restoring Headstone Manor to the Archbishops of Canterbury
I also looked into volunteering at Headstone Manor but could not fit it into my timetable
I looked up other volunteering organisations in Harrow and came across the Harrow Culture Forum
I have always been involved in extracurricular activities during school
Amateur drama and charity events like Race For Life
I noticed how these opportunities were starting to disappear
My first opportunity to work with the HCF was by volunteering at their desk in May 2024 at the May Day Fair held at Headstone Manor
Although the May Day Festival is an ancient English/European tradition
this 2024 fair was a multicultural one with South Asian and Maypole Dancing taking place at Headstone Manor
When I was at Primary School in Mitcham I used to take part in the May Queen Festival
I had always been fascinated by the Maypole Dancing at the Festival so I tried it in 2024
My next chance to work with the HCF was also a familiar activity
Later that year the HCF callout email asked for people to take part in a Spoken Word / Performance event at Harrow Town Centre
I signed up and chose to read a speech by Titania
Queen of the Fairies from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream
It was the first Shakespeare play I studied at school
This was also a multi cultural event and the other act was a South Asian Dance workshop and Performance
I had also been researching the origins of the May Queen Festival
The May Queen represents the Queen of the Fairies and two of the names she goes by are Mab and Titania
My most recent activity with the HCF was a much more ambitious one
Harrow Open Studios invited people to submit their work for ‘A Celebration of Art’ exhibition
While the two previous HCF events were ones that I was already familiar with
I have never studied Art formally and although I have taken part in exhibitions before they have mainly been collages of photos
I knew that I wanted to create an image of Headstone Manor because I spend so much time there
so at first I tried creating a collage of images I had collected
I originally tried a ‘delicate watercolor’
but it looked too ‘washed out’ so I made it much bolder
(Despite a near ‘mishap’ with the front patio
I was actually happy with the result.) The other problem was that there are dozens of images of Headstone Manor available on postcards
note books and leaflets so I needed something that would make it stand out
The theme of the exhibition was ‘Diversity in Harrow’
so I decided to depict Harrow’s Anglo Saxon origins and its South Asian population by painting images of three women; a modern day South Asian dancer wearing a brightly coloured lengha and jewellery
an Anglo Saxon princess (inspired by Princess Cenrith) and an Anglo Saxon female warrior
I painted the women on separate paper and glued them to the painting when I was happy with them so I did not destroy my hard work; and titled my painting ‘Women of Harrow on the Hill Past and Present’
My work was accepted for the exhibition and went on display at Harrow Arts Centre
In my research I discovered that graves of Anglo Saxon women had been discovered with weapons as grave goods
Anglo Saxons always buried their dead with personal items to take with them to the next world so it was unlikely that these items belonged to male relatives
While Queen Aethelflaed is the most famous Anglo Saxon warrior queen
there are records of other noble women who had to learn to fight
Preston Road station has resumed normal operations after a temporary closure this evening due to a fire alert at Harrow on the Hill
The station was shut down for approximately 30 minutes as emergency services addressed the situation
and passengers can now access the station as usual
Harrow Online has reached out to London Fire Brigade for further details and clarification on the cause of the fire alert
Firefighters rushed to Harrow-on-the-Hill station this afternoon after reports of a fire on the tracks
Members of Harrow Online reported seeing fire engines at the station shortly after 4pm and wondered what was happening
there are still minor delays on the Metropolitan Line
A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade told Harrow Online, “Firefighters extinguished a small track fire near Harrow-on-the-Hill Underground Station this afternoon
“The Brigade was called at 1610 and the fire was safely extinguished by 1706. Two fire engines from Harrow and Northolt fire stations attended the scene.”
A controversial plan to host a two-day K-Pop festival for 15,000 people in a North London park this summer has been approved at the first stage despite major reservations
expected to be overwhelmingly young women and girls
would have to walk nearly a mile and a half between the event site and the station
prompting concerns about their safety after dark
There has been growing opposition to the plan since Magic Sound Ltd first applied to hold the MIK (Made In Korea) Festival in Northwick Park on Saturday
Brent Council’s Licensing Sub-Committee approved the initial plans
however they still need to get the green light from the Brent Safety Advisory Group (BSAG) before the event can go ahead
Although the festival itself would only last two days
The event has faced mounting opposition from local councillors and residents
who have raised concerns including the impact on local sports matches
Due to potential safety concerns at nearby stations Northwick Park and South Kenton, it was confirmed that Harrow-on-the-Hill station would be used as the primary transport hub for festival goers
This would mean a 1.5-mile journey to the festival entrance
across two busy roads and through a pedestrian tunnel
The promoters themselves have said they expect the audience to be around three-quarters female and aged between 10 and 25, sparking fears about their safety walking to and from the site. Further concerns were raised about the potential noise impact on local residents and patients at the nearby Northwick Park Hospital and crowd management issues
as well as its effect on the park ground and leaving sports pitches out of action during the 17-day period – which may be even longer if they are damaged due to their propensity to flood when it rains
Councillors Narinder Bajwa and Daniel Kennelly had previously lodged opposition to the plan
citing its potential impact on public transport
Cllr Bajwa said cans and rubbish ‘will be all over our streets’ and festival goers travelling by car will ‘worsen the [parking] situation’ in the area
Whilst there is strong opposition to the plan
there is some support from local residents who feel it is a ‘great opportunity’ for the area and ‘will boost the local economy’
as well as suggesting increased activity in the park will ‘deter unsavoury and criminal activities’
Responding to the issues raised by residents
Magic Sound Ltd said it is ‘committed to listening to residents’ and will work with them to ‘reduce the impact insofar as possible’
They also acknowledged that using the park for an event such as this is controversial but claim it will benefit the council financially and those residents wanting to attend
the plan was ultimately approved at the first stage
the sub-committee noted that it had listened carefully to the representations made but highlighted that its role is to determine the event’s impact on the licensing objectives – namely preventing crime and disorder
It added: “The sub-committee has taken full account of the fact that the applicant has agreed to adhere to all the conditions set by […] the responsible authorities
In the circumstances therefore the sub-committee has decided that it is indeed appropriate to grant the licence
subject to the conditions agreed and any additional conditions given by BSAG.”
Customers travelling with Chiltern Railways are being reminded of upcoming industrial action on the London Underground which will impact rail services on the Metropolitan Line.

Customers are urged to check their journeys in advance of travelling.
Commercial & Customer Strategy Director at Chiltern Railways

House prices in Harrow have cooled slightly over the last six months
with most areas seeing a small drop of around 1-2% in asking prices
the borough’s property market remains fairly stable
with some areas holding their value better than others
Higher mortgage rates have made it tougher for buyers to afford homes
which has led to fewer sales and longer selling times
and demand for family homes in certain areas is still strong
and house prices can vary a lot depending on where you look
Here’s a breakdown of how different areas have been performing over the last six months
is one of the most sought-after areas in the borough
The market here is driven by larger family homes—detached houses are still averaging over £1 million
Buyers are being a bit more cautious due to higher interest rates
but properties in this area tend to hold their value well
with prices dipping slightly as buyers take longer to commit
The area is popular with families looking for semi-detached and detached homes
which still sell for £660,000–£1 million+
While it’s taking longer for homes to sell
especially for properties close to good schools and transport links
Pinner has been one of the most stable areas in Harrow
with very little movement in prices over the last six months
Detached homes here still sell for £1 million+
making it one of the strongest parts of the borough
Kenton offers more affordable family homes compared to Pinner or Stanmore
making it a good option for buyers looking to move up the property ladder
Good transport links and a mix of flats and houses help keep demand steady
Wealdstone has seen the biggest drop in house prices
which have become harder to sell due to higher mortgage rates
The area has seen a lot of new housing developments
which means there’s more competition for sellers
with regeneration projects like Eastman Village bringing new homes and amenities – the new supermarket is on it’s way
prices could start to recover in the long run
There are a few key reasons why house prices in Harrow have dipped slightly:
Interest rates have risen sharply over the past two years
making it more expensive for people to borrow money
This has hit first-time buyers and those looking to upgrade the hardest
With fewer people able to afford high monthly payments
People are taking longer to decide on a home
and sellers are having to reduce their prices slightly to attract offers
homes in Harrow are taking about four months to sell—longer than in previous years
Areas like Wealdstone and Harrow Weald have seen an increase in new-build apartments
which means more supply and more competition for sellers
While this could bring long-term benefits to the area
it’s putting downward pressure on prices
One of the biggest trends in Harrow right now is that larger family homes (semi-detached and detached houses) are holding their value much better than flats
This shift makes sense—buyers want long-term homes they can stay in for years
rather than smaller properties they might have to sell again soon
Experts don’t expect a housing crash—instead
prices will likely stay stable with some small movements up or down
Harrow remains a solid place to buy a home
Buyers who are ready to act now might even be able to get a better deal than they would have a year ago
this could be a good time to negotiate a deal
being realistic about pricing is key in the current market
Harrow’s property market might be going through a slow patch
but it remains one of the most desirable boroughs in London
it’s still a solid long-term investment
Have you noticed changes in the Harrow property market

A man was found dead in Harrow Weald this morning (30 January)
leading to the unexpected closure of the Brookshill Harrow College campus
A spokesperson for Met Police said, “Police were called at about 06:30hrs on Thursday, 30 January to reports of a man, aged in his 50s, found deceased on Brookshill in Harrow
“The death is not being treated as suspicious.”
It is unclear whether the man was found within the college grounds
“Our Harrow Weald campus is closed today (Thursday 30 January) for all staff and students
Thank you and we apologise for the inconvenience
Harrow Weald campus will be open as usual on Friday 31 January.”
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 6.37am today (30 January) to reports of an incident on Brookshill, Harrow Weald
“We sent a paramedic in a fast response car and an incident response officer to the scene
Like so many people, I knew about Mary Shelley and her famous novel Frankenstein before I had even read it. I actually studied it for my 19th-century literature module as part of my English Literature course, and even visited Lake Geneva while on holiday in Switzerland. I recently moved to Harrow on the Hill and have tried to find evidence of her life here
but she is mentioned at Headstone Manor and Museum
I joined the Harrow Culture Forum and took part in their Spoken Word event
When I found out about the Headstone Village Show
I knew that I wanted to take part and maybe do something associated with Harrow on the Hill
I knew that Percy Shelley and Lord Byron were poets (their famous works include Ozymandias and The Vampyre)
so I wondered if Mary Shelley had ever written any poetry
I also realised that I did not know much about her other work besides Frankenstein
I found a play/epic poem called Proserpina
which she supposedly wrote with Percy Shelley
which has a vast collection of Classical Greek and Roman artefacts
I also studied GCSE Greek Classical Civilisation
so I was already familiar with the myth of Hades
Shelley’s poem is about Ceres and Proserpina
the Roman names for Demeter and Persephone
rather than Hades (Roman name Pluto) and Persephone
It gives Persephone/Proserpina a voice as she asks her mother to stay with her in the field while she gathers flowers
The British Museum displays vases depicting the story of Demeter
including one where Hades and his captive Persephone are pursued by Demeter and Hekate
Hekate helped Demeter search for Persephone with torches when night fell
She became Persephone’s attendant in the underworld
Demeter and Persephone became the focus of a cult known as the Eleusinian Mysteries
Demeter visited the town of Eleusis during her search for Persephone
Mary Shelley also wrote an epic poem/play about King Midas
who wished for the power to turn everything he touched into gold
I also tried to find information about Mary Shelley’s educational background; she was self-taught
while Lord Byron received a formal education
the 13th Doctor (played by Jodie Whittaker) features stories with famous female historical figures
The episode The Haunting of Villa Diodati sees the 13th Doctor and her companions crash Mary Shelley’s stay at Lake Geneva in the hope of observing the famous contest that produced Frankenstein
Harrow has Anglo-Saxon roots
which Princess Cénrith restored to the Archbishops of Canterbury
With the arrival of Christianity in Anglo-Saxon Britain
both male and female members of the Church produced the illuminated manuscripts that are still admired today
They lived and dined together in monasteries
not only persuaded her father to restore Headstone Manor to the Archbishops of Canterbury
but she was also a devout Christian who became an Abbess of the Parish of Thanet

we’re taking a look at The Powerhouse on West Street
the powerhouse on West Street was created to provide electricity to the residents of Harrow on the Hill
changes were made through the London Electric Lighting Areas Act and the power station on the hill would cease operation
Over the decades, this site, in the heart of the Harrow on the Hill Conservation Area
would have a number of incarnations including warehousing and office facilities which continued to employ local residents
after a prolonged planning permission process
the site opened up as a residential development known (somewhat predictably) as The Powerhouse
While the sleek new apartments proved to be a hit
it wasn’t all plain sailing for developers
the developer completed a significant amount of work on converting two of the properties from studio flats to one bedroom properties
the permission that Jaspar Group thought it had to complete this work did not exist and the council stepped in with Cllr Honey Jamie saying in a statement
‘Enforcement must take place immediately
The developer has already got away with too much
The brutal destruction of a 19th century site is frankly outrageous’
the Jaspar Group was forced to put the issue right at considerable cost
The Powerhouse is home to 14 residential properties in this extremely popular part of our borough
Most of the apartments feature an open plan living room and kitchen with a few boasting a small private terrace
Prices for a one bedroom apartment in the complex start from around £350,000
British Transport Police (BTP) were called to Harrow on the Hill station on Tuesday to reports of a man suffering from a medical emergency
Reports on the Harrow Online Facebook group showed a crowd of people gathering at the front entrance of the station on College Road

A spokesperson for BTP told Harrow Online, “Officers were called to Harrow on the Hill underground station at around 6.33pm on Tuesday (14 May) following reports of a man suffering from a medical emergency
“Officers attended and dispersed a crowd that had formed
and the victim was able to return home.”

Harrow Council is continuing its borough-wide road improvement programme
investing £42 million over three years to improve road and pavement conditions across Harrow
This week, Harrow Online visited College Hill and Elm Road in Harrow Weald to see the latest pothole repair work taking place
JB Riney contractors were on site carrying out repairs using the new JCB Pothole Pro – currently the only one in London
The machine is part of a wider preventative maintenance programme and is five times more efficient than previous repair methods using large lorries
Council representatives advised that this is now a permanent reinstatement method aimed at improving long-term road conditions
“This is part of a planned maintenance approach for Harrow which would assist in stopping the deterioration of the network and to provide suitable and safe roads for Harrow residents.”
there will be a small level of disruption however they will give advance notice” they added
Cllr David Ashton, Portfolio Holder for Finance & Highways, said, “We recognise that one of the crucial things that residents expect in Harrow is decent roads and decent pavements
They haven’t had them in the past because of underinvestment
across both Labour and Conservative councils
we’re putting aside £42 million over 3 years
purely for road and pavement investment using traditional road surfacing
and a thermal machine to ensure that residents see the benefit
The initiative is about “restoring pride” in the borough
47 roads and 21 pavements have been fully resurfaced
and more than 5,000 potholes have been fixed
The council has also introduced a rapid-response “pothole squad” and is using thermal machines alongside the Pothole Pro to speed up repairs
Further improvements planned this year include clearer road markings
and the introduction of virtual parking permits for Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs)
which aim to simplify parking and reduce paper use
The investment forms part of Harrow Council’s wider corporate plan
with roads and footways being a top priority moving forward

Harrow is set to undergo big changes in 2025
Applications to redevelop a number of council owned sites for housing are set to be determined this year
which could deliver thousands of new homes
Decisions will also be made on whether the controversial ‘Tesco Towers’ plan will go ahead
with work set to commence on a new special needs school
which will provide an additional 292 places for local children
Residents and visitors can expect to see a number of large commercial
and school developments either being approved
Below is a breakdown of the main things to look out for
Developers want to demolish the existing Tesco superstore on Station Road in Harrow and replace it with towers ranging from four to 13 storeys
have been met with fierce opposition from some locals – including an adjacent retirement home – with a petition set up during the initial consultation stage being signed by nearly 2,500 people
Documents submitted by housing association Notting Hill Genesis suggest the development
represents ‘an opportunity to […] build homes on a brownfield side’ rather than on surrounding green belt land
Phase 1 would see the development of 233 homes – including all of the affordable housing in five towers ranging between seven and 13 storeys – and the construction of the new Tesco store
Phase 2 would involve the building of 271 private sale homes – in five blocks ranging between four and 13 storeys – and the demolition of the existing superstore
The restoration of a historic art-deco cinema in Harrow is set to move towards completion in 2025 after changes to the original plan were agreed
The redevelopment of the Station Road site to provide dozens of new flats
had hit a snag after the previous builder ‘went broke’ before it was finished
Initially granted planning permission by Harrow Council in 2022
the scheme was set to deliver 78 flats – nine of which would be affordable – as well as the cinema and a café
it was deemed to be ‘no longer feasible’ because of changes to the London Plan’s fire safety requirements
which were approved at a meeting of the council’s Planning Committee on Wednesday
means there will be four additional flats but a loss of all affordable housing units – because delivering them was deemed ‘unviable’ – as well as the café
The locally listed art-deco building at 77 Station Road sits within the Harrow and Wealdstone Opportunity Area
It opened as the Dominion Cinema in 1936 but was renamed the ABC in 1962
its art-deco exterior was covered with steel sheeting to cut down on maintenance costs
It became Safari Cinema in 1995 until its closure in March 2020 due to the pandemic
Plans were agreed in 2021 to demolish the auditorium for flats
whilst maintaining the cinema and restoring the building’s original façade – which is already well on its way to completion
council planning officers said the 78 flats were ‘close to complete’ but had remained unfinished due to the issues with the builder
In November of last year, Harrow Council and developers Waites submitted plans for Byron Quarter – a development aimed at regenerating council-owned sites in the borough
Plans have been submitted for 149 new homes on a disused site adjacent to the leisure centre
The proposed low-rise development includes 71 three-bedroom houses
with two and three-storey homes positioned along the site’s boundary to enhance privacy and align with the neighbourhood’s character
and walking and cycling links to the Belmont Trail and Byron Park is also part of the plans
The plans aim to redevelop a site that has been vacant for 20 years
work on the site is scheduled to begin in mid-2025
with the first residents expected to move in by autumn 2026
A decision on whether the next phase of the redevelopment of Poets Corner is to go ahead will be made this year
following a consultation period on the proposals finishing at the back end of last year
The development is planned at the site of the former Civic Centre on Station Road and
is set to provide around 1,100 new homes for the borough
will bring the application forward with a decision on whether it can go ahead expected to be made sometime in 2025
The proposals include the creation of new green spaces
The project has also come under some criticism for the number of affordable homes proposed
The number delivered at Poets Corner could be as low as 15 per cent due to financial viability issues
which is far below the council’s own target of 40 per cent
the Department for Education approved Harrow Council’s bid for a new Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) school at 265 The Ridgeway – a site now owned by the local authority
Redevelopment works are expected to take place during the year and
will provide an additional 292 places for local children aged 4 to 19
The demand for SEND school places is growing nationally, with Harrow experiencing the same trend
The council claims the new school will bring ‘significant benefits’ both to families in the borough
and to the council by reducing costs associated with travel and placing children in out-of-borough educational settings
SEND places are also provided in Harrow’s mainstream schools
but limited places mean some children with additional needs currently have to attend special schools outside the borough
called the approval of a new purpose built facility ‘truly amazing’
He said: “We’ve been working towards this moment for many years – it’s truly amazing news for our borough
This decision enables us to deliver something truly life-changing – a great facility that will benefit kids and young people in Harrow for decades to come.”

“Our crews treated two patients at the scene
before taking on to a London major trauma centre by road as a priority and another to hospital.”

including a paramedic in a fast response car and an ambulance crew
“The first of our crews arrived in approximately two minutes
