played at Lord’s since 1805 and one of the world’s oldest sporting contests
was once a highlight of the London “season”
only earlier than ever before — which is creating havoc with the boys’ examination timetables
Harrow’s strongest side will include three boys who are required to take their English GCSE exam this Thursday
meaning they cannot travel to Lord’s until well after the 11am start
They will have to decide whether to miss the match or defer at least one exam until November
by which time their A-level studies will be well under way
declined to say whether any of their first-choice XI would not be able
it was facing growing pressure from out-of-town shopping parks and changing habits
People were heading elsewhere for big shops
Something had to change — and it did
That’s when St George’s Shopping and Leisure Centre officially opened its doors
It was a £40 million development built to bring something different: not just another mall
and even play games — all under one roof
It was chosen on purpose to tie into the name
giving it a patriotic edge and a memorable start
the site was home to Adams furniture store
Go back far enough and the building had even been a cinema — the Harrow Empire — in the early 1900s
the development arm of the well-known pharmacy chain
took the lead and brought the project to life with the backing of Harrow Council
There was a real sense of occasion about it as there was a special guest – Hunter from the Gladiators
one of the biggest shows on TV at the time
the shopping centre had a modern look and feel — skylights
glass lifts and a sweeping staircase that gave it a surprisingly grand feel
Two major retailers helped anchor the new shopping centre from day one — Boots
which relocated from Station Road after more than 60 years there
Woolies took up two floors and quickly became one of the busiest shops in the complex
there was the Virgin Megastore — a real magnet at the time
It was the sort of place you could lose an hour or two browsing through CDs
you could walk in and pick up singles like Mark Morrison’s “Return of the Mack,” The Fugees’ “Ready or Not,” or George Michael’s “Fastlove.” Oasis and Blur were still at the height of their chart battle
and Now That’s What I Call Music 33 had just come out
The Disney Store also opened inside St George’s
having a Disney Store on the high street felt like a bit of a coup
But St George’s wasn’t just about shopping
Just a few days after the official opening
This was Harrow’s first modern multiplex
The first Mission: Impossible was just a few weeks away
the arrival of a Warner Cinema right in the town centre was a huge deal
No more trips to Watford or Brent Cross — everything you wanted was suddenly right here
It doesn’t get talked about as much these days
but in the early days of St George’s
It was a family entertainment zone tucked inside the centre
and even an internet café — which
a classic sit-down racer with wheel-to-wheel multiplayer
The sound of coins clinking into machines and the glow of screens made it a popular hangout — especially for those who preferred gaming to shopping
it added something genuinely fun to the mix
The design of St George’s had a mix of styles
the staircases and balconies gave it a slight Georgian flourish
The aim was to make it feel modern but not cold — and
People noticed how light and open the space felt
which wasn’t always the case with shopping centres at the time
The arrival of St George’s gave the town centre a real boost
and the town’s retail ranking jumped nationally
It helped stop the drift of shoppers heading out of town
Harrow was back in the top tier of London shopping destinations
with more visitors staying in the area to shop and eat
The late-night cinema and McDonald’s opening hours caused some concern among nearby residents
Harrow Council stepped in to limit late-night licenses
and security presence was increased — a compromise that helped things settle down
and the cinema changed hands in 2004 when Warner Village was sold and rebranded as Vue
taking over some of the former leisure space
Virgin Megastore stayed open for several more years before eventually closing in line with national trends
it remained a favourite spot for music lovers
St George’s had firmly established itself
and still seen as a central part of life in Harrow Town Centre
People had their routines — a browse around the shops
maybe a film upstairs if something good was on
some of the original sparkle may have faded
and a few of those first-day stores are long gone
but the legacy of St George’s Shopping Centre still stands
It helped shape Harrow Town Centre into what it is now
For those who remember the excitement of opening day
it remains a defining part of local history

which aim to honour the end of the Second World War in Europe
following a radio broadcast by then Prime Minister Winston Churchill announcing the end of the war in Europe
The news sparked street parties across the country
Each of the three care homes will be holding individual events throughout the day
At Buchanan Court, guests are welcome between 10am and 4.30pm, where the Mayor of Harrow
Whitby Dene will begin its celebration at 11am
featuring live entertainment from ‘Bus Pass to Broadway’ and a sing-along of well-known Cockney songs

said: “We’re thrilled to be opening our doors to the community to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day
“The event is a chance to re-awaken old memories and offers a meaningful way for older people
to connect with others and celebrate a momentous event in our history.”
residents have been sharing their cherished stories from wartime Britain – it’s been so inspiring to hear their experiences and learn from one another
“We’re looking forward to welcoming new and old faces into Whitby Dene for a nostalgic and heartwarming day to remember!”
Harrow Council held a “Day of Action” in Rayners Lane as part of its ongoing efforts to clean up the borough and tackle issues such as littering
overflowing bins and anti-social behaviour
The event saw representatives from Transport for London (TfL) Enforcement, the London Fire Brigade (LFB), council enforcement officers, Harrow’s Clean Team, Conversation Café, environmental health officers and Harrow Litter Pickers working together on the ground
Spot checks were carried out on businesses
including inspections of trade waste agreements and enforcement of Section 47 notices
aimed at cracking down on those not meeting legal waste disposal requirements
The council reported that around 90% of businesses were found to be compliant
Also in attendance were Councillor Pritesh Patel
Portfolio Holder for Cleaner Streets & Public Safety
Simon Horn, Borough Commander for the London Fire Brigade in Harrow
“It’s a pleasure to come to this joint event with the local council and other partners
The fire brigade are here giving fire safety advice to local residents and businesses
and also reminding of the dangers of lithium batteries
so we are reminding residents to purchase from reputable sellers
don’t tamper with them and also looking at home fire safety visits
looking at our online portal and to see if they are eligible for a free home fire safety check.” Residents can find out more through the London Fire Brigade website
“We’ve done days of action all over the borough
including a lot of issues in Rayners Lane – including on Harrow Online – where people post about the bins overflowing
We are looking at putting in bigger bins that actually compact more and also let us know when they’re full so they can be emptied
“We will put an extra shift in for street cleaning in all of our district centres meaning you get more coverage throughout the day
We’re also cracking down with people spitting
fly-tipping and those kind of things to make a big difference
Already I’ve seen from the last time I was here – it’s made a big difference in the last six months
But it’s still not where it needs to be
When asked what more could be done, he added, “I think some of it is structural. We need to provide a space for the mopeds to go that’s not taking bays, because that is a constant complaint – that people can’t park here – which is part of the reason you get double parking on Rayners Lane because you can’t get a space
Deliveroo – all of those companies – and restaurants rely on that trade as well
So it’s just thinking sensibly about
can we use them more sensibly to create spaces
It’s also looking at what we can do to enforce better on Rayners Lane
“Today we’re giving out warnings to the moped riders that they’re not just allowed to park there all day – they have to be using them to drop off or pick up a collection
There will be a few weeks of warning people and then we will start issuing fines.”
“This is one of the most popular days of action we’ve had
we’ve been receiving a lot of feedback from residents to say it’s very good to see
All the agency partners that we liaise with are here
“We’ve got TfL because a lot of the fly-tipping gathers around their land
putting the emphasis on them to do something about it as well
We’ve got people from our enforcement teams looking at everything from fly-tipping to businesses – and health and safety issues
So a whole plethora of things that are anti-social behaviour.”
“It’s quite a big problem in this area
the council spends a lot of money trying to clear up because all of the bins have to be cleared
Rayners Lane gets a lot of attention – I need to make sure that the whole of Harrow gets the attention
We are trying to curtail that kind of behaviour.”
The Conversation Café team were also in attendance
a welcoming community initiative offering face-to-face support
They have the following upcoming sessions –
Harrow Council confirmed that similar Days of Action will be rolled out across other parts of the borough in the coming months

hundreds of people turned out at Headstone Manor & Museum today to mark 80 years since VE Day
The special Bank Holiday event brought the community together with a mix of music
While the past week has seen warm temperatures
the weather took a dip — but that didn’t stop people coming out to enjoy the day
the rain held off for most of the afternoon
Visitors were treated to live performances from the Indie Choir and traditional Morris dancing
with plenty of smiling faces throughout the crowd

A witness has come forward following a disturbing incident that occurred around 6:35pm on Thursday (1 May) on a Metropolitan line at Harrow-on-the-Hill station

with concerned passengers watching as the man struggled but eventually managed to get up
The teenagers reportedly exited the train soon after
he should have known better,” as they left

The private school will open its first US campus in Long Island
Will it assimilate Americans into the upper crust – or is it more about branding
the British boarding school Harrow will open its first offshoot in the US: a lush 170-acre waterfront campus in Long Island
parents can wave away their children to the prestigiously named school
renowned for its centuries-old traditions (such as calling teachers “beaks” and bad behaviour “skew”)
Classes will take place in the Bourne mansion
the opulent former home of a wealthy American businessman
around which modern facilities will be built
A shiny teaser video paints an idyllic picture of an anglophile life at Harrow New York
“The school is like an oasis,” says Nick Page
as drone footage pans out over pristine lawns and lakes
“Yet so close to this huge metropolis of New York.” (The new school is almost equidistant from New York City and the Hamptons
so parents who have a seaside pied-à-terre can whisk away their darlings for the holidays.) In the video
students stroll about the verdant campus wearing Harrow’s trademark straw hats
reading poetry by Lord Byron and books about Winston Churchill
Boarding schools have a long history in the US
but top schools such as the New Hampshire-based Phillips Exeter Academy (where Mark Zuckerberg went) and Phillips Academy in Massachusetts (attended by George W Bush) have no mandatory uniform and emphasise sports like lacrosse and hockey
But while parents might be hoping that British educational traditions will rub off on their progeny
managed and operated by a company called Amity Education Group
which also runs a Harrow school in Bengaluru
but is a distinct entity from the UK school
It has led some to wonder whether the school’s international expansion is no more than a “rent-a-name” strategy
selling wealthy parents the British boarding school fantasy with little connection to the original institution
boarding schools are emblematic of good old British elitism
That’s in part because of how expensive they are
It costs £61,584 a year to send your child to board at the original Harrow school (the annual undergraduate tuition fee for a university in England and Wales is £9,535
A school like Harrow is seen by some as a way to find an elusive seat at the top table of society: out of the UK’s 58 prime ministers
20 were educated at Eton College (which some Harrovians begrudgingly refer to as “that other place”) and 13 went to Harrow or Westminster
The Guardian spoke with a number of former Harrow students who said Americans would find some traditions such as students having to touch the brim of their hats when a beak (teacher) walks by a little strange
said that the launch of the school during Trump’s presidency was particularly well-timed
given “how revisionist the US is currently”
He said that there was a culture at Harrow that valorized the British empire and “the good old days”
which would fit in perfectly with the Trumpian vision of “when America was great”

is in the process of being transformed into Harrow New York
Examples of the uniforms were on display during an open house for prospective students and parents on 25 February 2025
Photograph: Newsday LLC/Newsday/Getty ImagesHarrow was founded in 1572
when a landowner and farmer opened the school
providing free education for 30 “poor boys” from the Harrow parish
the school expanded to accept “foreigners” (boys who lived outside Harrow)
the school launched its first international campus in Bangkok; “an appropriate location”
due to “the strong links between Harrow School in London and Thailand’s royal family” (23 princes of the royal household were apparently educated at Harrow in the UK)
But beyond a fond transnational affiliation
there may have been financial incentives for opening a Harrow school in Asia
“Parents are attached to the perceived track record and trust of branded schools,” Selina Boyd, the international editor of the Good Schools Guide, told the wealth management and luxury magazine Spear’s
“Branded schools can almost short-cut the process when they’re setting up – it might take an unbranded school years to develop their name and demonstrate their credibility.”
Harrow New York will add to the school’s growing portfolio of campuses across the globe
with 12 Harrow-branded schools in 11 locations across Asia and two newly announced schools in the United Arab Emirates opening next year
Yet what may not be initially clear to prospective Harrow parents is that the schools outside the UK are owned by three separate companies
According to Harrow International Schools Limited (HISL)
financial and other operational responsibilities of all Harrow-branded schools rest solely with their owners and operators.” However
HISL emphasised: “All Harrow-branded schools are required under their sub-licences to reflect Harrow School’s educational purpose
It said HISL “oversees this requirement” by “regularly” sending “teams of experienced educationalists” to the international schools “to evaluate and report on their performance”
and that members of HISL’s oversight teams sit on the governing bodies of all Harrow-branded schools
The Guardian spoke with two teachers at Harrow schools in Asia (who wanted to remain anonymous for fear of losing their jobs)
They shared worries that the schools were more concerned with profits than the highest educational standards
which runs a number of Harrow schools in Asia
said that it took measures to ensure compliance with the Harrow standards.)
A representative for HISL told the Guardian that it “strongly refute[s]” the allegation that school is employing a “rent-a-name” strategy
However, a report from the thinktank Private Education Policy Forum (PEPF) cited “emerging evidence” that the relationships between British schools and their satellite campuses were “limited in nature”
with some overseas staff characterizing it as “exchanging a ‘brand’ license for a royalty payment”
HISL looks forward to the opening of the Long Island school – which a representative told the Guardian would be “a sprawling
serene and secure” campus with “state-of-the-art facilities” and “exceptional athletic amenities”
Only time will tell whether British boarding school culture can be transplanted to the US
or whether anglophile Americans will be left pining after the carbon copy of British elitism they had in mind

Firefighters are reminding people to take extra care when using candles after a blaze broke out at a flat in Stanley Road
Most of a first-floor flat was damaged in the fire
which is believed to have been started by an unattended candle used as part of a religious shrine
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Candles are one of the most common causes of fire
It’s really important that you never leave a candle unattended and keep them away from anything else that can easily catch alight.”
but they did not operate during the incident
The spokesperson added: “This incident shows just how important it is to have working smoke alarms fitted on every level of your home
“Smoke alarms give the earliest possible warning when a fire starts and we would urge everyone to make sure they have one fitted in every room where a fire can start except kitchens or bathrooms where heat alarms are more appropriate.”
The Brigade’s Control Officers received nine calls about the fire
The first came in at 12:14pm, and four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Northolt, Harrow and Wembley stations were sent to the scene

Reform took two county council seats from the Conservatives in Hertfordshire last night
as the first election results were declared
All 78 seats on Hertfordshire County Council are up for grabs in this year’s local elections – where Conservative
Labour and Reform are standing in all seats
While counting in the majority of the county’s seats will begin this morning (Friday)
last night the six divisions in Broxbourne were declared
The Conservatives held on to four of those seats – in Cheshunt Central
Reform’s Tony Hill took Flamstead End and Turnford
and Anthony Owen took Goffs Oak and Bury Green
which were also previously held by the Conservatives
Serving Conservative county councillor Mark Mills-Bishop – who is also leader of Broxbourne Council – lost the Flamstead End and Turnford seat by just 28 votes
says the overnight results have been “phenomenal” – predicting further wins for the party in other areas of the county
He says that following the wins in Broxbourne
the Conservatives will now have to consider that support for Reform in the county is “not just a protest vote”
He added that voters are feeling the pain of the past 14 years and wanting change locally
He says that with seats on the county council
Reform will now have the opportunity to influence budgets and to highlight “erroneous decisions”
Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service on Friday morning
stressed that more than 90 per cent of the county council seats had yet to be counted
He congratulated those Conservative candidates who had ‘hung on’ to the seats in Broxbourne
He said: “There’s a national sentiment that has been driven by Nigel Farage
“And it has washed over our local elections from the north of the country to the south
“Last night I was really please we hung on to four of the six county council candidates
all six divisions in Broxbourne had been held by Conservative councillors
In the four seats that were retained by the Conservatives last night
the share of the vote was significantly decreased from the last all-out elections in 2021
Conservative Paul Seeby polled 1,169 votes (equivalent to 38 per cent of the votes cast) to win the seat for the Conservatives
That was just 162 votes more than were cast for second-placed Reform candidate Siobhan Monaghan
who is already a serving councillor on Broxbourne Council
It was also 948 votes fewer than were cast for the Conservatives in the same division back in 2021
Serving Conservative councillor Dee Hart retained the Waltham Cross seat – and also saw her vote cut significantly
equivalent to 46 per cent of the votes cast – with Labour in second place
she won the seat with just 939 votes – equivalent to 32 per cent of the votes cast
Reform’s James Beatty was in second place in the Waltham Cross division with 843 votes – and Labour third with 691 votes
Conservative Alexander Curtis won the seat with 1,460 votes – equivalent to 41 per cent of the votes cast
Reform candidate Giles Hall was in second place with 1,302 votes
This division was previously held by Lewis Cocking MP
who back in 2021 had polled 2,324 votes for the Conservatives
Cllr Steve Wortley – who is the existing councillor for the Cheshunt Central division – retained the Hoddesdon South seat for the Conservatives last night
He took 1,669 votes in the election – equivalent to 44 per cent of the votes cast – but still 968 votes fewer than were cast for the Conservatives in the same division back in 2021
Second place in the division last night was Reform candidate Adam Clayton
who polled 1,239 votes – equivalent to 33 per cent of the votes cast
Reform’s Tony Hill took the Flamstead End and Turnford division after receiving 1,197 votes – equivalent to 38 per cent of the vote
That was just 28 more than the 1,169 votes polled for Conservative Mark Mills-Bishop
Cllr Mills-Bishop had been elected after polling 2,280 votes
Mr Hill will be joined on the county council by fellow Reform candidate Anthony Owen
who took the seat in Goffs Oak and Bury Green
Anthony Owen polled 1,472 votes in the Goffs Oak and Bury Green election
equivalent to 43 per cent of the votes cast
Second-placed Conservative Corina Gander polled 1,178 votes in the division
equivalent to 34 per cent of the votes cast
the Conservatives had won the seat with 2,352 votes
which was then equivalent to 64 per cent of the votes cast
The hugely popular children’s show There’s a Monster in Your Show is heading to Harrow Arts Centre this weekend as part of a major UK tour
Based on the best-selling picture book by Tom Fletcher, the high-energy family show will be performed on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May, with tickets available via the Harrow Arts Centre website
The production is back on a third major UK theatre tour due to overwhelming demand
with 47 venues on the schedule until 1 June 2025
it has been seen by more than 45,000 children and their families
Originally adapted for the stage in October 2023
There’s a Monster in Your Show is a lively 50-minute adventure full of catchy original songs by Tom Fletcher and Barrie Bignold
It’s designed specifically for toddlers and young children
with plenty of interactive moments where the audience is encouraged to sing
“It’s been an amazing experience to see ‘There’s a Monster In Your Book,’ come to life on stage and to meet the characters that I invented in my head
And it’s been incredible to be a part of developing the show and combining my love of writing books and stories with writing some of the songs for the production
When we began this journey at the beginning of 2023
I couldn’t have dreamed that we’d have toured the country for nearly a year
had a residency in London and be heading out on a third national tour this autumn
It’s testimony to the extraordinary puppeteers and the gorgeous puppets
‘There’s a Monster In Your Show’ is the perfect first theatre trip for young families
Going to the theatre with kids can be stressful but this is a totally interactive show where children are actively encouraged to shout
The story follows a group of performers who discover that Little Monster and his friends Dragon
Chaos and comedy follow as they learn about books
“The Who’s in Your Book series is so mischievous and cheeky
and the puppets have such a wow factor.”
who also adapted The Christmasaurus and worked on children’s favourites like Fireman Sam and Thomas the Tank Engine
believes this kind of theatre is more important than ever: “There seems to be way more pressure on children these days
even really young kids are so much more aware of stresses than when I was a child
The great thing about theatre is they just get lost in this magical moment
the stage is a bubble where the audience of every age can escape their worries and have fun and smile.”
“I want kids to feel this is a show that they are a part of
This isn’t a ‘sit down and be quiet!’ kind of show
There’s a lot of mischief in the book
and the show is not to go according to plan either
Certain monsters will require the audience’s help getting the show back on track
This might be some children’s first trip to the theatre
and I want no other theatrical experience to ever live up to it!”
The show has been described as “The perfect toddler theatre show” by Mother & Baby magazine and has received praise for its family-friendly approach and musical charm

Transport for London (TfL) has announced a major new strategy to halve fare evasion across all services by 2030
with measures that will directly affect stations like Harrow-on-the-Hill
where residents have recently voiced growing concerns about the problem
TfL is expanding its team of professional investigators to target the most persistent fare evaders
and travel history to identify individuals who repeatedly avoid paying
The initiative builds on work already undertaken on the London Underground and will soon be rolled out across the Elizabeth line and London Overground
The move comes in response to increasing fare evasion across the network, including at key Harrow stations. Members of the Harrow Online Facebook Group have reported a rise in people pushing through barriers at Harrow-on-the-Hill without paying
One person posted, “I was at Harrow on the Hill station today waiting for my brother and the amount of people I see coming in and out and pushing the disabled gates is ridiculous
Every train that came in at least 5 people per train pushed through the barriers and they don’t care
there were so many – I saw a whole family doing it
I am starting to think if they can’t pay their fair
“Didn’t realise you just push the barrier open at the (Harrow on the Hill) train station and don’t have to have a ticket
I saw so many people just doing this today
The new strategy is already showing signs of success
TfL reports that fare evasion across the network dropped to 3.4% in 2024/25
the annual cost of evasion remains high at around £130 million
said: “The overwhelming majority of customers pay the correct fare
and it’s unfair to those who do that a minority avoid paying
We are strengthening our capability to deter and detect fare evaders ensuring they face the consequences of their actions and that the cost of fare evasion is paid by the evaders
not our fare paying customers or taxpayers
It robs Londoners of vital investment in a safe
frequent and reliable transport network and we are committed to reducing the current rate of fare evasion to 1.5 per cent by 2030.”
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan echoed the message
adding: “Fare evasion is a criminal offence which deprives TfL of thousands of pounds of vital revenue every year that could be reinvested in London’s transport network
That’s why we’re expanding our team of professional investigators to cover the whole network and investing in the latest technology to target the worst offenders
It sends a clear message: fare evasion will not be tolerated
and we will hold those who do it to account.”
TfL has also increased the number of uniformed enforcement officers across the network and introduced new measures like enhanced monitoring
and a focus on people who use contactless cards to dodge fares

Cabinet Member for Children’s Services
“I’m excited to drive forward our plans to put our children and families first

our families and our children get the right support
at the right time and at their right place
We’ll be doing more to go into our communities to provide better access to help and support that is closer to home.”

Bereaved families who have lost relatives to gambling-related suicide have written to Sir Sadiq Khan urging him to deliver on his four-year-old promise to ban betting and casino adverts from London’s transport network
signed by 28 people harmed by gambling – including 20 bereaved family members – the mayor was asked: “How many more must suffer or die before something is done?”
Sir Sadiq had pledged in his 2021 re-election manifesto to instruct Transport for London (TfL) to ban adverts from betting websites and casinos
“given the devastating way gambling addiction can destroy lives and families”
But four years on – and with no ban delivered – the mayor now says he wants to wait for the Labour Government to “provide a national framework to addressing this issue” before taking any action from City Hall
last year told the London Assembly that the ban had been delayed because TfL could be subject to legal challenges if it introduced restrictions based on its own definition of ‘harmful gambling’
City Hall was said at the time to have already asked the Government and public health partners to help develop a national definition
Dr Coffey said his team would “move as swiftly as possible”
He added: “What I do not think you would want me to do
is do something that would cost millions in legal challenges and not move the dial one little bit.”
the families harmed by gambling have pointed out: “This makes little sense
as not only is there clear evidence that gambling is harmful
but more than 80 councils in England have banned gambling adverts on their own channels without legal challenges.”
While the Local Democracy Reporting Service has not independently verified a complete list of over 80 councils
many have indeed already passed such bans on their own estates
who leads the Coalition to End Gambling Ads (CEGA)
told the LDRS: “Sadiq was a trailblazer in 2021 when he called for an end to gambling ads on TfL
Now he needs to come good and refuse to allow politics to get in the way of Londoners’ health
“Other councils haven’t waited for permission from [Culture
and if Sadiq uses that as an excuse it will come at a horrifying cost – as the signatories to this letter will attest to.”
A spokeswoman for Sir Sadiq said the mayor would send a letter of response to the families
adding: “The mayor’s thoughts are with all families and individuals who have been impacted by gambling addiction
“The Government has a renewed commitment to looking at the best way to address gambling harms nationally and the mayor is pleased that one of the specific objectives of the research looks at filling gaps in the evidence base
specifically further understanding the impact of advertising
“Sadiq hopes that the Government’s leadership will provide a national framework to addressing this issue
including providing a national definition of harmful gambling advertising
the mayor will in turn consider what action he can take at a regional level.”
A spokesman for the Betting and Gaming Council meanwhile said: “Advertising must comply with strict guidelines and safer gambling messaging
which promotes safer gambling tools and signposts help to those concerned about their betting
“BGC members already commit 20 per cent of TV
radio and digital advertising to safer gambling messaging
The previous Government stated research did not establish a causal link between exposure to advertising and the development of problem gambling
“Each month around 22.5 million people in Britain enjoy a bet
and the overwhelming majority do so safely and responsibly
The most recent NHS Health Survey for England estimated that 0.4 per cent of the adult population are problem gamblers
“BGC members voluntarily contributed over £170m over the last four years to tackle problem gambling and gambling related harm
funding an independent network of charities currently caring for 85 per cent of all problem gamblers receiving treatment in Britain.”
Over a thousand people gathered in Pinner today for a brilliant day of festivities to celebrate St George’s Day
now a firm tradition in the local calendar and one of the biggest of the year
and activities for children spread across the High Street and Church Farm Green
Warm weather and sunshine helped create an even more enjoyable experience for everyone who attended
One of the highlights was the famous Pinner wheelbarrow race, a tradition that first started back in 1963
Teams took it in turns to push each other in wheelbarrows through the streets
stopping at different points – usually pubs or checkpoints – to have a quick drink before racing on
The race traditionally starts outside Pinner Parish Church and has become a much-loved part of the celebrations
often drawing big crowds and plenty of fancy dress
This year’s event also featured a traditional parade through the high street
Volunteers from across the community helped organise and run the day
including the newly opened ‘Music & Life’ shop in Pinner
Although St George’s Day itself falls tomorrow (Monday 28 April)
the celebrations were held today to make the most of the weekend
the date of St George’s Day has felt a little different (usually on the 23rd!)
but that didn’t stop the local community turning out in big numbers to show their support
Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services and Pinner South Ward Councillor
posted on Facebook: “Amazing to be part of the St George’s Day Celebrations in Pinner today in the sunshine with Harrow Mayor Chowdhury Salim
“Thanks to all the volunteers at Rotary Club of Pinner, The Pinner Association and all the Harrow District Scouts attending, as well as all the local Police and businesses who supported the event. Pinner Local / Shop Local in Pinner and a great turn out from wonderful local Harrow Council residents making the day that much more special!”
The aim of the event is not just to celebrate England’s patron saint
but also to bring the community together and help support local shops and charities
It has become one of the biggest St George’s Day celebrations in Harrow and is a real highlight for many residents every year
Photos from the day showed families enjoying the rides
and groups of friends cheering on the wheelbarrow teams as they made their way down Pinner High Street
Lots of photos and videos have been shared on the Harrow Online Group on Facebook

it was towards the end of the COVID restrictions
I was busy settling into my new home and things were getting back to normal at work
so it was a while before I was able to explore Harrow properly
I wanted to explore what was on offer locally
I was glad to find that everything was within walking distance
the local supermarket and the local Heritage Centre
It reminded me of historical sites I like to visit when on holiday and it is free
It was here that I discovered the origins of Harrow on the Hill and the role of King Coenwulf and his daughter Princess Cenrith played at Headstone Manor
I work at the British Museum and the Anglo Saxon collection is one of my favourites
I studied English Literature at university
especially its Anglo Saxon roots is also something I wanted to find out more about
The problem with the Anglo Saxon collection is that it is from a male point of view
because the artefacts on display put men and women in traditional gender roles
Men were buried with weapons and tools and women with sewing equipment like bone needles and spindle whorls
I also realised that Anglo Saxon queens and princesses had a lot more power than I originally thought
when I read about Princess Cenrith and her role in restoring Headstone Manor to the Archbishops of Canterbury
I also looked into volunteering at Headstone Manor but could not fit it into my timetable
I looked up other volunteering organisations in Harrow and came across the Harrow Culture Forum
I have always been involved in extracurricular activities during school
Amateur drama and charity events like Race For Life
I noticed how these opportunities were starting to disappear
My first opportunity to work with the HCF was by volunteering at their desk in May 2024 at the May Day Fair held at Headstone Manor
Although the May Day Festival is an ancient English/European tradition
this 2024 fair was a multicultural one with South Asian and Maypole Dancing taking place at Headstone Manor
When I was at Primary School in Mitcham I used to take part in the May Queen Festival
I had always been fascinated by the Maypole Dancing at the Festival so I tried it in 2024
My next chance to work with the HCF was also a familiar activity
Later that year the HCF callout email asked for people to take part in a Spoken Word / Performance event at Harrow Town Centre
I signed up and chose to read a speech by Titania
Queen of the Fairies from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream
It was the first Shakespeare play I studied at school
This was also a multi cultural event and the other act was a South Asian Dance workshop and Performance
I had also been researching the origins of the May Queen Festival
The May Queen represents the Queen of the Fairies and two of the names she goes by are Mab and Titania
My most recent activity with the HCF was a much more ambitious one
Harrow Open Studios invited people to submit their work for ‘A Celebration of Art’ exhibition
While the two previous HCF events were ones that I was already familiar with
I have never studied Art formally and although I have taken part in exhibitions before they have mainly been collages of photos
I knew that I wanted to create an image of Headstone Manor because I spend so much time there
so at first I tried creating a collage of images I had collected
I originally tried a ‘delicate watercolor’
but it looked too ‘washed out’ so I made it much bolder
(Despite a near ‘mishap’ with the front patio
I was actually happy with the result.) The other problem was that there are dozens of images of Headstone Manor available on postcards
note books and leaflets so I needed something that would make it stand out
The theme of the exhibition was ‘Diversity in Harrow’
so I decided to depict Harrow’s Anglo Saxon origins and its South Asian population by painting images of three women; a modern day South Asian dancer wearing a brightly coloured lengha and jewellery
an Anglo Saxon princess (inspired by Princess Cenrith) and an Anglo Saxon female warrior
I painted the women on separate paper and glued them to the painting when I was happy with them so I did not destroy my hard work; and titled my painting ‘Women of Harrow on the Hill Past and Present’
My work was accepted for the exhibition and went on display at Harrow Arts Centre
In my research I discovered that graves of Anglo Saxon women had been discovered with weapons as grave goods
Anglo Saxons always buried their dead with personal items to take with them to the next world so it was unlikely that these items belonged to male relatives
While Queen Aethelflaed is the most famous Anglo Saxon warrior queen
there are records of other noble women who had to learn to fight
Blatant fly-tipping in South Harrow has led to hefty fines
as offenders are ‘shamed’ in Harrow Council’s latest ‘Wall of Shame’
Images and footage released in the recent MyHarrow newsletter show household rubbish dumped on the streets
Another case in Clovelly Way saw items such as toys and cardboard left on the pavement
with a £600 fine handed out for failing a duty of care
The council is urging residents to help identify fly-tippers caught on camera and report them
“Unfortunately there are a few who spoil it for the rest of us and show no pride in the community,” the newsletter reads
“Brazen fly-tippers have been caught on camera and we need your help to identify them so we can find and fine them – just like those highlighted.”
It continues: “They are just a number of incidents where we’ve traced the criminal dumpers
The message links to the council’s online ‘Wall of Shame’
where images and videos of fly-tipping incidents are published regularly
Harrow residents have taken to social media to express frustration over the issue
“We have to stop all this awful tipping
Trips to the tip cost me £12.50 a time now due to outer London ULEZ.”
“It seems like it’s more common to fly-tip around borough boundaries
I think those should be more enforced.”
Fly-tipping remains a criminal offence and anyone with information is urged to contact the council to help crack down on those responsible
