A goal in either half from Ellie Cleary gave Wigan Athletic Women their first-ever Lancashire Women's County League victory on Sunday afternoon
A beautiful team effort at Haslingden Ladies gave Latics fans a glimpse of what to expect from the newly established team
providing plenty of optimism that an exciting 2024/25 campaign is set to be in store for everyone associated with the Football Club
It was Latics who were in control from the first whistle
creating a number of opportunities throughout the start of the encounter
including a powerful strike from Molly Hassall that flew just over the bar
Amelia Knowles was tested from close range early on
responding quickly to tip the chance over the bar and subsequently punt the corner kick to safety
The intensity of the game increased with the substitution of Ellie Cleary
driving through the Haslingden midfield and laying the ball into the path of Molly Hassall
who was unluckily dispossessed in the six-hard box
A sublime solo effort from Cleary opened the deadlock after just 30 minutes
Picking the ball up in the middle of the park
she used her pace to open up space behind the defence
wrong-footing the keeper and slotting the ball home to score the side’s first-ever professional goal
The celebrations showed the real togetherness of the team
and it was a special moment shared with the travelling Tics supporters
Boyce's side continued to ask the question right until the half-time whistle
Another chance from Cleary was fired just wide and a winding effort from Grace Carr narrowly missed the far post
sending the visitors into half-time on a high
Latics started the second half in the same manner that they finished the first
being very quick off the mark and doubling their lead within the first five minutes
A pinpoint Grace Carr cross found the head of Ellie Cleary at the back post
who nodded in her second in Latics colours
including a dipping Louisa Black strike caught by the goalkeeper and a mesmerising run ending in a dizzying shot from Grace Carr
showing positive signs of what’s to come throughout the season.
Latics managed to remain resolute at the back and earn all three points after a phenomenal league debut
The girls will now turn their attention to their next game
away on Tuesday 3 September against Euxton Girls

We are investigating following the discovery of a cannabis grow in Haslingden
We were called to an address in the Hudrake area on Friday
following reports of strong smells coming from a particular premises
Officers entered the building and discovered over 500 cannabis plants in the address thought to worth approximately £225,000
There was also evidence that the electricity had been bypassed and Electricity North West attended to make the area safe
said: “We will continue to tackle the cultivation of cannabis
as it can cause misery for local communities
“The hidden dangers that this type of grow can pose
can have incredibly harmful consequences for the property and those neighbouring it
“The cultivation of cannabis is often seen as a minor offence
but it can have strong links to organised crime and modern slavery
and it is absolutely unacceptable and not something we want in Lancashire.”
